When I moved to Madrid, I fell in love with two things - the history and the food. And over the years I’ve loved spending time in places that combine both… taverns & restaurants that are absolutely dripping with history and atmosphere. In this video, Yoly and I take you to 5 of my favourite historic restaurants and tapas bars… and not only do we eat the food, but also I tell you the stories behind these remarkable places that we’re so lucky to have on our doorstep!
▶ Books I mention in the video
DON QUIXOTE: amzn.to/2CyhNaU
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS: amzn.to/2T72mNM
1. First we visit Taberna Antonio Sánchez, which is actually the oldest still-running tavern in the city (not to be confused with Botin, which is the oldest still running restaurant in the world). This place has the most remarkable decor that hasn’t changed since the 1830s. And downstairs is a fascinating hidden wine cellar.
2. Then we head into Madrid’s Literary Quarter to Casa Alberto. These are the streets Miguel de Cervantes’ famous author of Don Quixote lived in. And they’re wonderful to wander. Casa Alberto is always heaving, and it’s perfect for a quick vermouth, or something a little more substantial… like the bull tail stew we order.
3. Next up it’s Taberna La Bola, where we get a special behind-the-scenes visit to the kitchen, where they make their famous cocido madrileño stew the old fashioned way - in clay pots and on a charcoal stove. It’s a huge feast, but it’s worth it!
4. Casa Ciriaco is part bar, part restaurant… and it’s always heaving. I love hanging out in the tapas bar area and sipping on wine, or heading through to the restaurant where it just screams old Madrid with its photos of famous guests.
5. The grande finale! Restaurant Botín… aka Sobrino de Botín. We see the 300-year-old oven, explore the four magical floors and then sit down in Hemingway’s table for a plate of incredible roast suckling pig. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Have you visited any of these places? Did you enjoy the experience? Let me know in the comments!

Hola, Spain lovers! We're James and Yoly. James is a New Zealander, and Yoly is from Spain. And we both live in Madrid. This channel is all about giving you a local insight into life in Spain, and helping you experience this country like a local when you come to visit (or live!). If that sounds like your kind of thing, bienvenido!

Which of the 5 restaurants do you most want to visit. 🤔Let me know!
Teberna Antonio! That place looks stunning
I love your videos James; but could you do a video of Halal places to eat? Because it's all jamon and beer in Madrid :( i think i'll stick to vegetarian and sea-food when i go there this summer if i can't find any Halal places :D
La Bola for the clay pots, Antonio for the wine vats, and Botin for its history!
You should visit Zaragoza , I recommended a “tubo” tapas zone and the mitic restaurants “Calamar Bravo” and “El cachirulo”
Awesome video!! Your channel was part of the inspiration 🙏 to create our own channel where we showcase some tasty Spanish food! Keep up to good work man!
Your dedication and your knowledgeable ambition makes your videos so exciting and so interesting. Can't wait for the next one . Excellent job. Hugs from London Uk
Thank you for much Mica!
Totally agree
I'm a emigrant from Madrid (Atocha street), and I hate you for the amount of nostalgia you make me feel. Keep loving my city, and love it for me too, it's the best.
Haha sorry!!
Boy, I am sold. James, Spain should pay you for marketing the tourism in their country! I can literally imagine myself sitting in that Hemingway chair and eating and drinking. Cannot believe you have only 16k subscribers.
Thanks Bud! The subscriber count is rising... so that's good!
I totally support if some of my taxes go to this guy
Jeje gracias tío!!
I agree!! Fantastic channel and host hope he gets millions of subs
The important thing he do is to show in some videos not touristic parts of Spain. Here we receive each year about 85 million turists (and Spain is only 45 million inhabitants) but people usually come first time to a place and they keep repeating the same place all their life and trust me there are a lot of amazing places to visit in Spain like Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria ... (all are big regions) that have a lot of history and amazing food.
His inmersion, especially in what concerns the daily habits of the spaniards is surprising.
Cheers !!
Totally!
James - your stories that blend history and mouth-watering food are wonderful. Having recently visited some of these places with you and Yoly I can't wait to do it all again!
Thanks ma!
Hello from Oh Canada lol...just wanted to tell you...you have no idea how much i love watching your shows on Magical Spain, it makes my heart sing and do backflips lol, I'm a Chef I sold my last restaurant in 2017 it was my 9th, and now i cannot bring myself to create a new one here....you see the food we get here is not fit for humans or animals, i find it almost impossible to make a dish to be excellent because of the supplies we get here, I have had Spain on my mind for a long time, as i think it is one of the best clean food countries that we have, so yes i think we will make the trip in the fall to visit Magical Spain...once again thank you and your lovely lady for showing us this Dreamland..all the best Chef Ninja
Me encantas. Aprendo inglés mientras aprendo sobre mi pais
haha me alegro !
What a beautiful video!!! Tanta historia tiene España!
Gracias!!!
I have been binge-watching your videos for a few weeks and came across this one. On our last trip to Spain in 2019 I made sure to make a reservation for Botin 6 months before! I celebrated my birthday with our granddaughter, husband and friends from Madrid. After ordering and trying to do justice to an entire suckling pig, we were given a tour of the entire restaurant - top to bottom! Our waiter had been working at Botin for 30 years. What a beautiful experience. They brought me a cake, sang and brought me a gift of their sangria pitcher! What a special day! Thank you James and Yoly for bringing such beautiful memories to mind! Saludos desde Orlando, Florida.
Bravo James and Yoly. Another wonderful video. Great that you are impressing the locals.
thanks Dad!
Ole! Gracias Susana!
Hey James, just found your RUclips channel. I’m moving to Madrid in two weeks and it’s helping me having the feeling of this amazing city already. Great job!! Cheers!
Fantastic - I’m glad!
Loved this video. I have eaten at both La Bola and Botin. La Bola is less touristy. Botin can be full of tourists at certain times, but it is authentic. I like pork, but not a big fan of cochinillo. The roast baby lamb is equally excellent. I am glad you mentioned Segovia. It's a great day trip from Madrid, easy train ride. Historic town, great for walking. My favorite place to eat there is El Duque. I ate there the first time when I was in grad school in 1975 and my parents came for my Thanksgiving holiday. Best Thanksgiving meal ever. (I don't like turkey.) It's an old, family run restaurant like Botin. The long time owner/manager took care of us that day. Very simple meal of soup, roast lamb with potatoes and lettuce, tomato and onion salad, bread and red wine. My most recent visit was in the fall of 2018. The owner's daughter now runs the operation since his passing. She was going through the dining rooms greeting all the patrons. When I related my memories of her father during my first visit, she nearly came to tears. I hope to get back there again soon!
I love all your videos of Spain. I began watching in mid 2019, because I was preparing my itinerary for my visit to Tenerife and then Andalusia area. I learned a lot from your videos, and I loved it when you paired up with Yoli. I had a wealth of information with me during my 18 days in Spain. Thank you for all you so. I really appreciate you and Yoli.
When we go to Madrid is mandatory to go to Botin ,we are Portuguese and live in Lisbon so we are quite close! Your videos are great !
Thank you!
y no engorda el maldito...
jejej yoga...
@@spainrevealed hahaha buena esa
🤣🤣😂😂👍
pensaba lo mismo
They walk a lot. I believe it. Love all their videos.
I am going to Spain in 2 weeks!!...and find your videos fun and very informative
James and Yoli - this is just wonderful! You weave together the history and the current cuisine with great depth, passion and sophistication. I know this is high praise, but I just love your videos: they are miles ahead in quality compared to may I've seen. I hope to get to Madrid, and, perhaps this boy form the NW of England can experience a Devours tour! Meanwhile, I live it vicariously as I watch. I'm of to get a copy of Don Quixote :-)
Muchas Gracias
Tony
Thank you James for this vid! I am going to visit Madrid this Thursday!
Awesome - have an amazing time!
Gracias por el aprecio a España. Disfruta de lo bueno !
One of my favorite videos of yours! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!!
We went to Botin last week, absolutely stunning place. You really get a sense of stepping back in time.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I ate in Botin forty five years ago and still recall it as one of my best dining experiences!
I also ate there 48 years ago (while at Air force base Torrejon) and have been back many times - always outstanding.
@@cynthiastevens1626 I was at Torrejon also between 1973 and 1976. I was on a KC-135Q flight crew and we went there TDY about once a year and stayed for around a month. One of my favorite places to go to.
@@oldnavcat figured you were military. My husband and I were both docs at the base from 1970-73 so just passed each other there. I’m sure you knew of Casa Paco which was popular with military as well.
@@cynthiastevens1626 The name is very familiar, but I can't place it. I vaguely remember a barbeque place outside The town of Torrejon that was great too. Also enjoyed great food at Hostel del Cardinale in Toledo. The first time I tasted gazpacho Toledano. Loved it and make it myself to this day! And of course the tascas. So much to love in the area!
Know the restaurant in Toledo. I, as well, learned gazpacho from our live in “nanny” and make it every summer as my specialty. Keep in touch with our nanny on FB. She was 18 and now quite matronly, but lovely. Good “talking to you” and remembering Madrid and food.
Just love your videos, I really appreciate your love for my beautiful Madrid.
Gracias Casi!
Gracias
Fantastic video once again mate
You are the best, thank you to show us all these wonderful places from my birth place. :-)
Gracias!!
I am Nuyorican so those who don't know that is- my parents were born on the island of Puerto Rico but migrated to the mainland of the USA. I was born and raised in NY and while in college in NYC, I wanted to know more about my culture so I took a semester about the history of the island but little of Spain also since it was the mother country and my professor told me the story about the Pork added to many dishes to see if the European Jews had converted to Catholicism, so yes it is true.
Dear god we made a huge mistake on our recent trip to Madrid. We actually looked at La Bola but decided to keep walking down Gran Via. We ended up in a very convincing, but TERRIBLE tourist trap a few blocks down. The food was horrible. And we could have had COCIDO! Mala suerte... Next time. Loved this video! I too am a fan of the blending of history and food. Looking forward to seeing these spots on our next trip!
Next time William :)
An advice. Look where the Spanish eat, not the tourists.
Omg! Love it! Going to Madrid this month and I will definitely go to some those places! Fascinating that culture and history!! Would u add another place nowadays?
Mate, you should be hired by the Madrid Tourist Board. Every time I watch your videos I just want to fly over there. Won't be 2019 but still planning a week in Madrid July 2020. We'll contact you before we fly. Cheers!
Thanks for doing this video! I loved and will try some of these places when I visit in 2024!
Looks amazing 😁 I love all your informative clips I have just binge watched 1/2 of them. I was just wondering could you give some more information on Spanish vegetarian food please. How to order where to go ect
On the list!!
Thank you nice video, love Spanish Food is The Best
Thank you guys for another wonderful video, I also thank you for not just sharing the good but the good and the bad! Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your stay and I’m looking forward to seeing the your next video’s
I love your enthusiasm....and I totally agree with you...Madrid is full of wonders. A fantastic experience!!!!
Hi James and Yoli - I love the look of la Bola and the Casa Ciriaco- wow, i learn so much from your videos! Will definitely be visiting these places. Thanks again for posting.
Awesome vid!! I was hoping you'd do one on restaurants. Only problem is fitting them into my trip! 😁
Haha yes that’s the challenge!!
Thank you for the advice. Visiting for a week and will follow this up.
Another excellent vid. I'm going back to visit old friends in April and these are really getting me in the mood! I would love to see you going to Segovia and doing a vid there. Restaurante Jose Maria has the best cochinillo in the whole world, washed down with their own house Ribera del Duero
Confirmado.
I can’t wait to get lost in Madrid ❤️❤️ wanderlust 😍
Although I need to wrap up my PhD dissertation I just can’t stop watching you 2!
Haha sorry!!!
And good luck!
Tuuttokhllljkkllopoooo
Wonderful! Thank you!
Great video.Definitly will dining at Botin, and want sit at that table where famous writer was sitting
I saw the video and had to make a reservation at Botin for when I visit Madrid around New Year’s 🤗 I need to taste that crackling pork!
Great video! thanks James and wife. We will visit Madrid in two weeks and will try to go to those iconic places listed in the video. Those made us remember our time in Bogota, Colombia, when younger in the streets of el barrio La Candelaria, founded by the first Spaniards in South America. E.g. La Puerta Falsa. Congrats!
I hope you keep doing this kind of videos in many other cities!
Bravo! I'm hooked on your videos now! I subscribed after seeing two videos earlier this week but you've got me wanting to move to Spain! My favorite of the 5? I'd say La Bola but I will be happy to go to all of them when I get to Madrid! Thank you for sharing your passion for the history of Spain and the incredible food and wine!
Stumbled across your channel when I was researching for a trip to Spain which I'll be doing soon! Almost all of the information, especially related to restaurants, food and drinks are covered. Thank you for this!
One thing I'm trying to understand is, why is the video quality so poor even for 2018? Even if recorded on a cell phone, almost all good phones can record in 4k. Please upload high-quality videos!
Great video. I’ve been to most of those places. Thanks for posting.
Another Great video James! Where do you think is better, Madrid or here in Valencia for food? I just discovered Valencian Vermouth in the central market! So tasty, and the area has lots of history too!
Thumbs up ere' guys, another great vlog on exploring, eating and information. Many thanks for sharing :)
We stumbled upon a very authentic vermouth bar, Bodegas Ricla, on Calle de Cuchilleros in the middle of what seemed like a tourist trap. The place is a real original run by a very nice family.
maravilloso, gracias. ( Por cierto, ¡ qué bien hablas español ¡👌
Thanks you so much! Learn us more of madrid, i love madrid and your advies!!!
¡Dios mío! Tengo tanto anhelo y hambre ahora.¡Cuantas ganas tengo de volver!
I came from your other video ... so glad you did Botin!
Yum!! So idk if they know but if they dont do something about the mold it will just grow so bad and come up to the top.
Interestingly, cocido looks very similar to an old Persian dish called Dizi, even the clay pot used looks similar. Dizi has Lamb, Lamb Fat, Chick Peas (Garbanzo), Potatoes, and Tomatoes.
good god all those top tier wines on that shelf made me anxious, like what if they fall off.
nice videos!!. Could add, in the next video, the street where the taverns are??
Hi James,I have been planning to visit Spain- Madrid and Barcelona..and found your videos so helpful, you are doing a great job. Please suggest good vegetarian restaurants and family friendly places to visit. Thanks
It’s definiately something I want to do. Pls check our Devour Madrid and Barcelona blog for ideas in the meantime!
@@spainrevealed Thanks,I've been checking it ...but no luck on Veg food!!!

Casa botín is amaizing.
El Lhardy te falto. Si te veo por Delicias te invito a comer
Gracias!
The best part of the Cochinillo is located in the head, but many people especially Anglosaxons will never try it! Buen provecho!
Similar style of cooking in pots like in Morocco. Cooked in the fires that heated the hamams (bath house/saunas). Still done today.
Beside the fact that it´s obvious that you love the country and respect it, (taking time to know our history and culture), I´m pretty sure that you have the best pronunciation I ve seen on an englishman... ("on an englishman" "of an englishman"???).
Of an English man.
amazing channel
Thank you!
Love your enthusiasm and excellent knowledge. Adore Madrid and can’t wait to visit again. I love the Kiwi accent. Please keep it pure, rather than adding American twang now and again! 😂 I’m a purist 😂😂
As a passionate vegan i think i would go for the suckling pig, muchas gracias/,
Just booked a week in Madrid. Don't even know where to start. For sure Botin and find a good cigar bar or shop.
Awesome video.
Have you heard if there are any Cave Tours available?
hi is it possible small kids eat in tapas bar? desperate to try these tapas food during our spain holiday later :P Can you make video where usually Spain family eat with small kids? I don't see any kids eat in your video :))
You should record a vlog on El Escorial!
Will do one day!
@@spainrevealed 👍👍👍👍
Spain and italy has so many handsome guys.
The real name of the cocido is "cocido madrileña". The jamon in the recipe should be jamon iberico, said the owner. And the chickpeas should be soaked overnight.
At sobrino de botin, the name of the person cooking the lechon is chef michael, his doing that since 2005. The lechon is called "lechon de leche", the pig must not be more than 21 days old ,they sell an average of 80 pigs per day. The underground cellar can be dated to 13th - 14 century. This accdg to the owner in the documentary by Kara David for a Ph TV.
Check out the sheep’s heid “head” in Edinburgh where I hail from. It dates back to 1360 when king james v1 and his mother Mary queen of Scots were said to have been patrons. Love your videos by the way
Doing any live streams soon?
How about a ‘Hemingway’s Madrid’ episode?
Good idea - noted!
The Spanish Ambassador .
I ate at casa botin with my dad several times
What brand shirt is that ?

Guy Hamilton used to say he is Doctorate of Science (Dsc)! Now his business?
The wine from the tinaja, would’ve lots of body..
Check out Ferretería in Anton Martín ( Atocha Street,57 ) youll love the ham and the blood sausage !
We separate the flavours of the ham in different parts with a new representation of the classic "ración de jamon",the site is beautiful placed in an old ironmongery and sure u and Yoli can taste some wine and good ham :) Love your videos James keep it up :)
