I get the logic on the top pick. MarioKart and Smash always seem like the skill gap between players is way more punishing to the fun at times, versus the team minigames and potential crazy turnarounds of mario party.

Absolutely agree that there's no substitute for having a room full of gamers playing some games together. It's where my name comes from, as friends & I used to get together every Tuesday after work/school starting in the mid 2000's & play games together.
We recently went up to a friend's cottage & brought projectors to play some PS1, Saturn & PS3 outside at night around a campfire.
Three Dirty Dwarves for the Saturn was the standout game for us, none had played it & it was a lot of fun.

Some 3+ player (because 2 player is too easy) games I liked are:
    the Gauntlet series
    F-Zero GX
    Phantasy Star Online Episode 1&2
    Timeplitters 2
    Hunter: The Reckoning
    Smash TV
Most are from the Gamecube as that was the console I had that had native 4 player support.
Honorable mentions to the 4 player arcade beat 'em ups and hack 'n slash games. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, X-Men, Gauntlet (again), Smash TV (again), etc.
Also, it feels like a retro game now, but Rockband 2 was crazy fun with someone on a different instrument.

While I don't think it deserves a spot on a top multiplayer game list, no honorable mentions? The game series I'm thinking of is Armored Core, no particular title. On the ps1 & ps2, all of the games supported the respective link cable for LAN play across two consoles & two TVs at the minimum. They started at the zenith of console multiplayer, that wasn't just couch coop on a single console. IIRC it was the Gran Turismo and Twisted Metal games that also used the link cables, there might've been a few others I'm forgetting. But still...

No way I would ever get 3 other people with GBAs and link cables. My top pick for best Multi Player game would have to be the original Mario Party that came out on the N64 in 1998. We were over 21 and saw the title PARTY on it. So you know how we played the game. My gamer roommates and I played it so much we started missing work & eventually got kicked out in 1999 as we didn't have rent money as all our money went to 21 and over drinks. We were too dedicated to this multi player game and I highly not recommend to play it like we did back in the day. But makes for an epic story to tell & learn from.

My two all time favorite multi-player games have to be Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (PS3) and Poy Poy (PS1). Both can be up to 4 players and are brutal. I use to enjoy 1 on 2 fights with Tekken online. Locally my friends were excellent on their own, but being teammates kinda started actual fights. Same with Poy Poy. Nothing ruins a friendship like knocking everyone out with boulders.
I do agree that Bomberman is an awesome multi-player game, but I've never played the Saturn version. My experience was playing against my wife and brother in law on the Genesis. They were both new to the series and picked that game up super fast.

Great & interesting list! One could argue that the perfect & somewhat complex conditions required to adequately experience some of these games could disqualify them from contention, but I enjoyed the list for its left field choices. Also, I'm sure the games are a hoot if said conditions were doable!
Mario Kart and Smash seem like obvious omissions but as another commenter wisely stated, sometimes the skill gap present in those games renders them very unenjoyable for a select few. Mario Party 2 is a stellar choice for #1, and my favorite game of the series hands down.

Good list! I've heard Saturn Bomberman was the best Bomberman, but I have still yet to play it. I was going to get an actual copy, but prices on Saturn games are insane! The Mario Party games are some of my _favorite_ games to play locally with friends! It is always just pure chaos!
So my personal favorite multiplayer game that I've been playing with friends for years is *Itadaki Street Special* on the PS2. It basically plays like Monopoly meets Final Fantasy. The goal is to hit a target amount of cash by investing in properties. It sounds boring, but it has RPG elements where you can level up and gain skills that can range from simply gaining an extra dice roll to summoning a giant god beast to completely destroy an opponents' properties! The longer the game goes, the more crazy it gets!

I've talked about it a couple times. I just haven't talked about it for a while. Actually, one of my favorite gaming memories has to do with Halo. I share the story in this video: ruclips.net/video/MY1NM-MyrOs/видео.html

I know you focus on vintage games, but I'll throw out that Towerfall Ascension is an absolute blast to play with friends on a couch. Bomberman Live is pretty neat too. It has online multiplayer. It's not 2D like the Saturn version, but it's pretty satisfying anyway.

Bishi Bashi on the PS1 is a blast to play since it is a wacky party game filled with colorful characters. You should definitely play that game Retro Bird and you will definitely enjoy it.

Dark room Mario is the way to go. Best place to play it in is a abandon hospital basement. If you hear any ghost things tell them to bring their own controller.

I got ChuChu Rocket along with my Dreamcast, waaay back, but never really considered its multiplayer mode. Might need to give it a try next time I have friends here for a games night.

Couch co-op/multiplayer is half the reason I love retro gaming. I played Mario Party 2 with just one friend earlier this years and it was a blast. I’m always surprised how well the N64 computer players hold up today.
My roommates freshman year of college would start “fiddy-spots” (50 turn N64 Mario Party games) at 2 am with others on the floor when I was getting back from doing homework. And then sometimes they’d start another at 4 am and get an hour of sleep before class. Somehow they made it through school. This was a good 15 years or so after the N64 launched so they were retro gamin before it was cool. I wish I had had the energy to join them more back then >.>

    Great video! A few thoughts:
    - You might think 4 Retro Birds is just more of a good thing, but think of the worldwide banana shortage it would cause! Some things should be left alone.
    - The Dolphin emulator has made Four Swords Adventures way more accessible. All you need now is a half-decent PC and four controllers of any kind: Xbox 360, PS4, Switch, you name it. Mix and match, if you want!
    - Smash Bros. has a reputation as a "party game", but I find that the learning curve is pretty steep for new players, and even SoulCalibur on Dreamcast can be a better choice.
    - I've had a bunch of 20-somethings over for games before, and Streets of Rage 2 was a surprise hit. It warmed my heart! :)

Well that's one way to get me to picture you punching someone in the face while they're eating a banana 🤣

If I had to pick my top 5 multiplayer games, I'd choose:
    5 PS3 - Pain (Pass the controller)
    4 Xbox - Halo: Combat Evolved (4-player)
    3 Dreamcast - PowerStone 2 (4-player)
    2 Atari 2600 - Warlords (4-player)
    1 PlayStation 1 - MicroMachines V3 (4-player)

Every play Lemmings on Super Nintendo? It was the only version with competitive multiplayer. Try it out sometime! ~ VR Game Dev and fan of the Retro Bird (especially the ending theme)

My fondest memories are with Goldeneye. I never got punched before until I started playing with my head down with proximity mines in the complex and kept winning. He broke my controller instead of my face that day. Needless to say, we changed over to Mario Part.y

Multiplayer games are our favorite way to game. The way we see it we didn't just build the game room for us. We built it to enjoy with everyone we love.
Love to seeing what your top five are. Hours tend to change all the time. However, one constant that stays in there always is new Super Mario Bros on the Wii. If you can't have fun annihilating your friends while trying to complete the mission, what's the point of having friends? 😂😂

Yeah man, a Dreamcast game HAD to be included here. My personal favourite was Sonic Shuffle. The game was basically Sega's version of Mario Party and we loved it back in the day.
Also when it came to Four Swords Adventure, having all those link cables and GBAs back in the day wasn't even a big deal cuz everybody would have theirs and bring them together to play, but it is a pain today.
