Wow awesome deal Geoff! The dealer was great also. Don't find a lot of guys like him that would take that 60% offer but then again you don't see guys like you and you're partners going to a show to buy out a single tables inventory. I know a lot of people hate on your for your takes on the hobby, but this should show them that you aren't a fool and know what you are doing!! Can't wait for the shop to open and hopefully have a chance to visit! Congrats and happy holidays!
For a dealer to pay 60% to buy that much is very high. I wouldn't pay more than 50% of sticker. Good luck to them.
if you can find a seller who is desperate to sell , you show the ugly side of card collecting ....I mean really 60% off is not better than someone off the street trying to sell something to a dealer at a show . Complete joke . That seller had real pain and he was desperate for the money

How are you guys reacting to the new information coming out of topps about the fake 1 of 1s and the over production of the 1 of 1s where sometimes there are two or three copies.
That has happened for years all the way back to the 1998 Flair Masterpieces when two collectors found they both had the same Ken Griffey Jr. 1 of 1. Same exact card and started exposing cracks in the hobby.

He’s not too far off because $30 of 70 is 43%
Let's make the math easier for you! What is 10% of 70? 7 right? Now 20% would be 14, 30% is 21, 40% is 28. How much is 70 + 28=98. So 45% is a pretty close guestimate

I seriously recommend people should not buy tons of single cards right now, especially $500+, the market is correct itself every day. Those older $500+ cards that haven’t sold for 8-10months+, prob coudont even get half of that now.
Should of offered 20-30k max. Man hope I’m wrong but, just not looking good.
& tbh, don’t trust those younger guys. They don’t understand the market/cards like you do. They’re too young/naive to understand this.
Imo you should be the only person making giant Inventory buys. Sports card marketing is dying, you guys need to supplement with Pokémon & other stuff cuz, purely sports cards you guys won’t survive
You bring up some good points. Far too often, people get fixated by a "sticker price" and then assume that's at or near market value and negotiate from there. The majority of sticker prices at card shows are grossly over-priced. You MUST negotiate from market value-not sticker price. Repeat after me, sticker price is irrelevant.
The red flag was when the dealer was shown the comp at $94 & re-priced at $150---from $1,500.
I highly recommend Geoff finding some serious, well informed buyers with experience to keep his inventory where it needs to be.

Well the thing about investing is that it’s a lot easier if you buy things at 60-70% of value. Lots of people try “investing” with speculation and that’s not the best way to do it
I think you're making a big mistake on buying these huge lots. You're buying cards that are going down nearly everyday. 60% comps today is a good deal. But before too long most cards will be selling for less than that its inevitable. So unless you resell the stuff asap you wont make much profit. You will get stuck holding a lot of that inventory. It will take quite awhile just to get back what you initially paid. Thats a lot of work. Now is not the ideal time to open a shop.
Good luck with the new shop. With the market the way it is, this is a massive roll of the dice and could work in your favour or it could blow up in their face. Cards are worth what someone is willing to pay. All the best.

The older cards of the legends will sell but the ultra modern crap is the same that everyone else has and by the time they sell them these guys won’t even be in the league.
Whatnot I took my app off people been stealing people debit card. And someone got a Downtown of Diggs and graded PSA 9.5 it was fake $400 I know it happens every where

Why not wait and let people BRING you cards at your store, sell for cash and I bet some of that cash is spent at your new store. Buying at shows seems counterproductive.
They can't have a grand opening with empty showcases. Eventually buying from walk-ins will be a big part of their purchases.

please stay away from bad players cards, i don’t care how rare the card is. Unless it’s very vintage just stay away from career backups & has beens. The market won’t go “up”, there’s a reason they went down
Cash is king but I would probably offer him about 50% and see where he was at. Because some of them, high in cards might not be high in cards in a month. It's a gamble.
