My first exposure (photo pun) to petapixel was when Jordan and Chris joined. I’ve really enjoyed the content online since. I don’t get the “gatekeeping” I’ve seen from some online.
I secured a mp3 file and enjoyed the episode. I'll be a regular listener in the offline audio format. But I'll offer a few suggestions for the audio mix. Chris's audio was perfect, Jordan's audio was clear but maybe 3db down, and Jaron's audio was often too low and muffled. As you work out the system, maybe a compressor would help. .... And FYI, I have been a daily follower of the PetaPixel web site for years, and consider it the best source of interesting photo content available. Much appreciated.
I know a bit about Stuart Semple from working in the art world myself until 2 weeks ago. Honestly I do not think this is a scam from him. I think a few things: 1) he is very naive about what a project like this would take, and it looks like he has a "team of geeks" who are probably quite naive themselves or not being honest with him. 2) It's possible the plan is to basically re-skin existing open source tools with some minor tweaks to make them look like the Adobe suite as much as possible (which honestly wouldn't necessarily be a terrible thing if he produced a version of some decent existing OSS that someone with a bit of Adobe experience could pick up and hit the ground running with). 3) His job is to get attention and he's pretty good at that. I think it's also about getting the art world a bit more active against Adobe hegemony - us terminally online digital nerds already know they suck, but a lot of art world people aren't like us, and they are his people.
Clickbait isn't just when the article isn't about the headline. It's also outrage baiting, like "Is Sony abandoning APS-C?" and then article is a couple Twitter randos said APS-C is being discontinued, but Sony says it isn't. It's things that aren't really news meant to get a big reaction.
On the stock shooter (or whatever that death wish is called)- I had a Leica M10P (loved it) and a black leather Leica shoulder style holster (you can tell where this is going). Evidently, from the rear it looks like a pistol shoulder holster. It never entered my consciousness. I was in a crowded city, and there was an event behind us. I pulled out the camera and turned around quickly- and met the stares of truly terrified people. It was dead quiet. I was just fortunate there wasn't a swat team around. Needless to say, that was the last time I used it! On Abode- that also happens to be the name of my DIY home security system company. I'm always confusing it with Adobe. Bad idea. And coming from the software and hardware world, $100K doesn't even get the (IP) phones and web site connected. I wish him well. Great format- look forward to more!
Man, I like Chris and Jordan a lot, and they're the reason I am even checking this out, but some of the "opinions" here from the other host are a bit excessive and hyperbolic and also not very open-minded. Its early, but hopefully there is growth to come.
Really fascinating behind the scenes. Especially from 32:00 on when they discuss PetaPixel and reviews, fairness, tests, etc. I have been a "reader" of PetaPixel for some long while, and a viewer of Chris and Jordan's reviews on their previous channel for a good long time too, and in both instances i TRUST the fairness of the reviews; not the objectivity, because obviously any photographer / videographer is going to have a preference for one make, one model over another. I happen to use Fuji XF and GF gear, but I had Canon in the past, I had Leica in the past (and regret selling it off to pay tuition for a program in film production at SAIT that I didn't really need to take!), and so when a friend recently wanted my advice about gear, I told her that Fujifilm XT-whatever is good and light. She bought Canon. So it goes. The point is, I trust PetaPixel and I trust and ENJOY the Jordan-Chris videos, even for gear I have no intention of buying.
Small feedback: the audio volumes vary a lot. Especially Mr. Schneider is almost in-audible from time to time. Then Jordan or Chris are talking and it's much louder. Maybe just play with the volume a little bit more between audio-devices? Other than that: keep them episodes coming! 😁😘
If PetaPixel didn't have stories that stem from a random photographers IG post, people wouldn't care so much about the Abode article. But the existing reputation makes everyone doubt the newsworthiness of potentially more legit articles. Not that I think the Abode is actual news, but i can see how it can be argued at least. Also, the first line of defense on the newsworthiness of content is citing that the material isn't technically clickbait is a bad way to start, lol.
Really been enjoying the show. Which won't be super clear from my seemingly antagonistic comment (not my intent, I promise!): the Abode "it's important to talk about things not ignore them" would make sense in an era where attention and engagement were not constantly being actively manipulated. The "newsworthy" argument is essentially a blanket for covering anything at any time, including bad faith initiatives, scams, or parody kickstarters accepting money. I feel like a lot of the U.S. news media has evolved its approach to covering attention-seeking initiatives post-2016, which is why it catches my attention to hear "it exists ergo it is news" and "offering a statement that this seems unlikely to succeed would be opinion not news." This perspective ignores the reality that all news coverage is implicitly an editorial selection of salient facts. (Not helping is the fact that the story ends with, "we aim to only share legitimate and trustworthy campaigns." Even if this were such a campaign, this is again a reasoned opinion rather than a statement of newsworthiness.) All of this comes off as very critical, but it's meant as a fan! I found the discussion in this podcast on the topic an order of magnitude more interesting and useful than the story.
Maybe it's not clickbait, but from the perspective of someone specifically looking to read about photography you guys do publish what I might classify as "a lot of dumb garbage." "China Uses AI Camera to Capture Jaywalkers and Publicly Shame Them" isn't what many would consider quality journalism, for example. In my mind PetaPixel seems to have an identity problem: on one hand there seems to be a genuine interest in photography, and on the other there are the pressures of late-stage capitalism to contend with. The result: mixed photography/tech reviews interspersed among a selection of stuff you'd expect from buzzfeed if you did a keyword search for: AI, camera, photo, or Instagram. If that's what you wanna be that's your business, but for many it's two niche flavors that don't pair well together.
Engaging, honest discussion, and the color filter background effects with Jordan’s newsreel green and Chris’s peony and soccer ball pink were rather amusing to see.
Good podcast but you need to sort the audio out. The volume difference between the 3 hosts makes it hard work to hear what’s going on. Host is really quiet and mumbles at times, Chris is really loud and Jordan in the middle. Sort that and I will listen every week. Good job so far.
I love these podcast videos! They remind me a lot of the ones done by Digital Foundry based on the structure and pacing. If I could make some constructive criticism, I would recommend that you include more b-roll of that topic you discuss!
The 8-bit inspired intros for the podcast and Jordan/Chris’ show are f*cking rad! I’m grateful that PetaPixel has given y’all a home, but after so many years of being indy it’s a little jarring to see you folks shilling for a camera brand. I guess DPR did brand-sponsored articles too once in a while, I guess it just felt different since your faces weren’t on it.
Love your work guys and great content and big fan of your podcast. Just a question, here on RUclips the volume sounds great but on the actual podcast (iTunes) the sound is a lot softer/quieter, I have to increase the volume a bit to here you guys talk. Thanks
I think if you guys are doing a “video podcast” then you should show more of the actual things you’re talking about on screen. If I haven’t read the article, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Not everyone is reading every article on Petapixel. I get you want clicks back to Petapixel, but if you’re going to do a video visual-based podcast, there should be some sort of visual reference instead of a talking head most of the time. Like the Abode story, all I saw was the logo. There needs to be more context like maybe a promotional video playing while you’re explaining it or more graphics supporting what you’re talking about. Otherwise, good stuff!
Jaron- I was listening to your podcast in my car this morning while running errands. I could hear Chris and Jordan very well. Their voices stayed at the same volume and I could hear them well out of my car's speakers. To my dismay, your voice got louder and mostly softer. If I turned up the volume to hear you when you were at your softest, Chris and Jordan were really, really loud. Is there a way you can ensure that your voice remains at a constant "loudness" so those of us listening under not so perfect circumstances can hear you as well as your compatriots? Thanks.
About monopods: for sports and other movement scenarios such as birds, monopods are great stabilization platforms as one point contact with the ground keeps the camera from shaking but also allows fast follow movement of the player or bird. I get a better keeper rate using a monopod than handheld only. Your results may vary obviously.
Hearing about the Sphere reminds me of an immersive video experience I went to as a kid at the Oregon state fair in the 90s; basically an IMAX style screen in a tent that gave a way to experience that style of really immersive video if you didn't have access to an IMAX theater. It was basically a big dome tent you could walk around in with a wrap around projection screen on one side. It was particularly memorable for being able to move around to take in the whole experience.
They had something like that in the 80's and 90's in Luzern, Switzerland. They filmed B-roll from all over the country and showed it in a special 360° cinema.
Thanks for answering my question on the podcast. Really nice detailed answer, which was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! Sorry about the stupid username, I forgot to say I’m Oliver :) Really enjoying the podcast and videos - keep up the great work.
Great show guys. Im glad you guys are doing a weekly show, which makes it nice for my commutes. I am noticing an issue with the balance of sound levels between the three of you. Outside of that, love the show, keep it up.
Re the potential danger of using a “Stockcam”: several years ago a friend who was on his way to a science degree spent a summer in a blind off a road near Carmel, CA, taking pictures of birds. One day a team of police officers descended on him, guns drawn, telling him he’d been spotted as a possible terrorist sniper. Fortunately these officers weren’t as quick to violence as some of the more steroid-addled constabulary specimens we have in New York City, so my friend survived. He had a camera with a telephoto lens. Imagine what might have happened if he’d been using a “Stockcam.”
Question about monopods: How good are they in a home studio environment. I sometimes film in my relatively small space and once you have a camera and one or two lights set up, there are tripod legs everywhere, crossing over each other and it is a bit of a hassle. Do monopods help with that, or would the wide feet make it impractical for this? How about hanging a background from two monopods instead of light stands?
If you have to start your "we're not doing clickbait" argument with the technical definition of what clickbait was in the 2010s buzzfeed era, you're definitely doing clickbait and you know it lol. Not saying it's a bad thing, but don't act like you're not writing your headlines in a style to lure people in to click on them. The difference is that you deliver with content after the bait, but if any... more enfranchised person reads these types of headlines it's very easy for them to dismiss it as clickbait. Another thing: You say the Spotlight posts are an important part of petapixel, yet they don't even have a button in the top navigation bar or any other way for them to be easily found (same thing for features) unless you already know they exist. They just get lost so easily among all the other posts, you definitely need to work on discoverability of the high effort content against everyday fluff if you want people to actually find and form their opinion about petapixel on the merit of that.
I love listening to Chris and Jordan talk. Jaron however, I cannot say the same for. I'll probably be skipping future podcasts as long as he's in them.
Nikon photoblogger Thom Hogan, who recently decided that he would no longer use the term "shoot" for photography, would soil his pants if he saw the Stockcam. His lonely campaign, all shot to hell.
Guys, keep going! You are the best thing out there since dpreview jind of went into stasis! Doesn't mean that there is room for improvement, but you are already really good!
It feels like we’re reaching the end of the necessary growth in computing performance for consumer applications. People don’t really need more. So presumably this will be a problem for tech capitalism. Which in my opinion would be a great thing. I definitely don’t at this point feel I need higher resolution video. 4K is fine for gaming and for video, 1080p is adequate and uses less bandwidth. In the UK, most TV channels are still 720p. And there are a couple of 4K sports channels that no one probably watches. There’s very little demand for more.
I always follow them from past 3 yrs for each and every camera review before buying any camera. I love their explanations for photo and video specification along with drawbacks
As I'm listening I found a PetaPixel posted a article on the new Instax SQ40. I didn't know they released a new square camera but the article did not have the information I was looking for. Features, how did it compare to the SQ1 and the SQ6. It seems like a fluff piece.
Modern technology has changed to process of capturing images so much that the old notion of photography is barely relevant. All the aspects relating to when/where to take a photo, composition etc. was covered decades ago, albeit in print. As an aside , I made my first b/w contract prints 55 years ago with my Dad's old Kodak darkroom contact printer, paper and chemicals he had never used - they were at least a decade old when I found them, and still worked.
Thanks for another interesting podcast. I'm curious if you've had any experience with the Heipi 3-in-1 travel tripod. It was heavily hyped through a kickstarter campaign, and I wonder if it's as good as they claim.
Reading these comments is just a great whoosh. Like, how do people expect Chris and Jordan to make money? PetaPixel has to get clicks to make money. Are you upset that your eyes had to glance over a title that you deemed click bait? Seriously, Don't click the link and just read what you're interested in. They even said in this podcast those articles are what allows them to afford to be able to do the stuff you are interested in. Other sites were all about the specs and hardware and where did that get them? Chris and Jordan having to find new jobs. Hey old timers, your community sucks at supporting and keeping alive the information you care about. Don't be mad at PetaPixel for this, be mad that your community sucks and it forces PetaPixel to need to "click bait" to be able to pay their writers. I'm getting Chris and Jordan even more! A podcast with them? Awesome! Surprisingly my eyes haven't burned out of my skull yet from the other article titles. PetaPixel give me as much Chris and Jordan as possible without them burning out and I'm happy.
I think the question about the monopod's use isn't concerned with weight, but stability. The base is nowhere near the size of a tripod's, so it's inherently less stable. Also, the monopod's legs are on the ground, or nearly so, meaning that small irregularities in the surface could make it even less stable. A tripod doesn't have this problem, because its feet are the only parts in contact with the ground.
Last I checked, the GPU integrated into Apple's M2 Ultra is roughly on par with nVidia's RTX 4060 in terms of overall performance. Which means that it's a passably decent low-end GPU. Being that it's integrated into the SOC means that it can never be upgraded (going from a 4060 to a 4090 (or AMD's equivalent, because market choice) would blow a 4060-based system out of the water in terms of raw performance). So you'll be stuck with that passably decent low-end GPU until you buy a new Mac. Which is a ridiculously expensive upgrade given that a GPU is a fraction of the cost of literally any other system. And the new Mac would also likely come with a passably decent low-end integrated GPU. Yay Apple.
Personally I am a fan of HP workstations like the Z units. You can spend a lot and get them new, OR just buy one used and refurbished. They have awesome build quality. I am still running a Z600 and just added a Z4, that being said, for photography, you can get nice mini stations with the "GPU" integrated into the CPU and get quite nice performance as well. I don't fool with video enough to say about that. I hear that is far more GPU intensive.
Can you do a review on Viltrox 16mm 1.8 AF lens for Sony? There's a buzz that .... "Chinese lens manufacturers have started to outdo the Japanese ones." True?
Semple's project I think can more be described as a joke/troll than a scam, but this kind of news coverage can be a problem. Leads to stories about a guy said a thing, which isn't news without the larger context that guy is clearly lying. A lot of scammers work the media for free promotion that way.
That Abode thing will either be a straight up scam that delivers nothing or they might grab a few open source projects, make some cosmetic changes and claim mission accomplished.
Alright, so here's the definition of 'clickbait' by Cambridge Dictionary: "articles, photographs, etc. on the internet that are intended to attract attention and encourage people to click on links to particular websites." If that doesn't sound like every single PetaPixel article title, I don't know what does 😂 The entire PetaPixel site amounts to roughly the same total information value to photography community as just the 'News' portion of DPReview, not counting all the fantastic gear reviews and opinion pieces.
@@anthonyhitchings1051 You are right, unfortunately. However, there are varying degrees of clickbaitness and PetaPixel tends to land towards the more extreme end of the scale. That, combined with lack of original quality content (not industry news , not promotion or endorsement pieces, not repost of other publications and individuals but truly original content), is my main gripe with PP.
@@10rollsoffilm11 I've heard some people describe "Clickable" and "Clickbait" as "designed to get your attention" and "basically misinformation that gets your attention" respectively. So like "here are 43 things in a list, you won't believe number 13!" might be "clickable" since there's nothing false and number 13 might be ridiculous to some people; and "This Cheap Camera Makes Only Film Images!" (picture of a GR3x) is "clickbait" because it's a digital camera and the GR3x is not cheap.

I love Noct Noct jokes. The best.
P.S.: Actually 16kg are 8 Nocts, not 4... :D
I wonder, how are these videos produced? what software? it looks awesome!
Thank you! We are using Riverside.
believe it or not, growing up in east europe, we had this, it was called a photo rifle, and it was many years ago
Lovely podcast, congrats!
Chris and Jordan can go to Telus Spark in Calgary to check their infinity dome...
I've enjoyed this. Looking forward to more.
The Stockcam is not new idea. 4:19
There was film camera that had handle like riffle.
A podcast is not a bad idea, but leave out the editor. Better off - move back to dpreview.
Jordan's RCF - resting Chris face...epic.
Good stuff. Could I be tempted to visit Vegas??
I think the question about the monopod's use isn't concerned with weight, but stability. The base is nowhere near the size of a tripod's, so it's inherently less stable. Also, the monopod's legs are on the ground, or nearly so, meaning that small irregularities in the surface could make it even less stable. A tripod doesn't have this problem, because its feet are the only parts in contact with the ground.
Noct is the perfect measurement unit
Anish Kapoor didn't create Vantablack, he just got the license to be the only person allowed to use it for art.
Im really enjoying this series!!!! Keep it going!
Those images are phenomenal!!!
Someone is going to get killed with that.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 👍🤗
What are your thoughts on the Ricoh film camera project?
Yay Apple.
What about bench marking with DaVinci Resolve?
Hard no on the 8 bit intro…cringe.. but love Chris and Jordan. Following since Camera Store.Hosers,
The guy on the bottom is annoying.
Young dude - you talk too much. Didn't you say last time that Jordan and this Chris guy are the stars of the show?
I want a full reviewvideo of the stockcam, maybe just as an april fools video, but it would be funny to watch
Wouldn't a Mac Mini do the same job for less money and be smaller as well?
Control and direction discussion would have been more credible with Jaron ABOVE Jordan and Chris.
Jaron's a total power bottom!
I thought the Noct was based on the Leica Noctilux
Sadly noct, I'm afraid.
Forget Olympus, nice photos, but how about a review of that AERO laptop versus an M2?!
Hmmmm for some reason my Ipod didn't' download properly. but it's all good now
Thanks!!
Can you do a review on Viltrox 16mm 1.8 AF lens for Sony? There's a buzz that .... "Chinese lens manufacturers have started to outdo the Japanese ones." True?
Spite software and hardware: Blackmagic pocket cinema camera.
Everything you know about Chris's grey hair is a lie!
The color theming. 😍
Wait till next week!
Why create a brand-new alternative to Adobe when Darktable exists? Just support that project
we need a samyang 35-150 review ^^
Geez ,… and I thought a “noct” was a moniker to indicate a lens was particularly suited for low light or night time shooting. Noct, as in “nocturnal.”
It usually is, isn't it?
@@Wildridefilms Yes, but they said, in this video, that the term "noct" refers to the weight of the lens. In this case, it means 2 kilos or 4.4 lbs.
I've heard of "run and gun" but...Jeez!
13:00 "Artistic statement" is a contradiction in terms.
18k in Apple vision pro?
No gun no freedom
So much clickbait. Sorry, guys. Unsubscribed.
I agree someone is going to get hurt...
but why are you guys even wasting time with these comments? just ignore it
Alright, so here's the definition of 'clickbait' by Cambridge Dictionary: "articles, photographs, etc. on the internet that are intended to attract attention and encourage people to click on links to particular websites." If that doesn't sound like every single PetaPixel article title, I don't know what does 😂 The entire PetaPixel site amounts to roughly the same total information value to photography community as just the 'News' portion of DPReview, not counting all the fantastic gear reviews and opinion pieces.
RUclips requires clickbait headlines - everyone knows that and does it.
