I kinda agree with the Sigma guy.
Y'all gonna talk about what you want, and I appreciate the stance that "we mention it because it's there, up to the viewer to determine if it's important," but... RUclipsrs are influential, what you talk about becomes what the community talks about, becomes what people make purchase decisions on. And RUclips reviewers (I'm one of 'em) will often talk about things that are easy to evaluate, but not the most meaningful measures.
I have noticed the rise of the sunstar barometer, which seems recent in photography RUclips and have thought to myself, "I sure hope people new to this hobby don't get the impression that this actually matters."
I am reminded of my frustration with speed limits on public roads and how an easy measure becomes disproportionately enforced. Cops have a tool they can point at a car and get a pass/fail answer indicating "this person is dangerous." And it gets used, a lot. Meanwhile, more difficult measures of dangerous driving (e.g. distraction) get enforced less frequently because it's not easy to evaluate.
The sunstar barometer reminds me of that. And specs on smart phones and laptops. Does a new wireless headphone have a USB-C port. How much piano black is in this car interior. Is it made of metal or plastic. Etc. etc.
It's not that the measures are actually meaningless, and yes to some people it's very pertinent information. It's just that the ease of the measurement contributes to the proliferation of it, moreso than the usefulness of the measure, and results in a lot of disproportionate community attention on trivial things.
    IMO.

"Life size" made a lot more sense with film. It just meant when you got your negative back, at 1:1 ratio, the size of the object on the film negative would be the same size as the actual subject. It also mattered a lot more with film because generally the detail limiter was film grain.

Lens breathing performance is crucial for my type of photography: focus stacking for product, scale model, and dioramas. If you have never stacked dozens of frames from MFD to mid-distance (not to mention infinity focus), you'll never understand how big of a pain it is to correct all the misalignments and artifacts later manually after stacking if the lens breathed a lot. And yes, those flaws need to be corrected. I don't want my photos to look like a product of AI image generation.
In this sense it almost felt like Nikon read my mind in terms of understanding my needs, and designed their Z lenses in a way that is perfect for my use case scenarios - lack of breathing, at the expense of size and weight. Absolute sharpness is nice to have but not the most important criteria for me because a product of focus stacking will be sharper than anything taken in a single shot. Breathing is one of the first important criteria i look out for before buying a lens, followed by CA. Focus stacking boosts sharpness - and also CA, so that's one more reason you do not want to use crap lenses for stacking.
Sony is the absolute worst choice for me when only about 2 bodies they sell currently offer focus bracketing, while their lenses breathe so much that i feel like I'm using a zoom lens when i rack focus.

And I think the Tamron 18-400 is like 18-270 mm at closest focusing distance, but if you know in advance, it's not a big deal I think.

A couple suggestions for Joseph's tech question..
    1. Try hanging the camera off of your neck and bracing it against your chest so you don't have to hold the camera with the right hand. Then use your left hand to manipulate the dials and press the shutter. A flipped-out screen will be key for you to compose while the camera is hanging from your neck.
    2. 3rd party chest mounts exist for cameras. I think they're intended for videographers but they could be useful. A "Velocity clip" is an option.
    3. A tripod or any kind of mount is a great option.
-Your friendly neighborhood bilateral amputee and occupational therapist, John

  • @the_wiki9408
    @the_wiki9408 11 месяцев назад +3

For left-hand only use of a system camera, I would just use a tripod. Once you get the camera mounted on the tripod, you shouldn't have much difficultly moving it around, changing controls, zooming, and shooting with one hand. For more portable/casual shooting, you will probably have to settle for a compact camera on a neck strap. Let it dangle from the strap while you fiddle with controls and then hold it upside down in your left hand and push the shutter with your thumb. And of course, most people can probably take photos with their smartphone one-handed (again with maybe a strap for safety).

One feature I often find over done in reviews "is build quality" being linked to both weight and using metal. One of the great thing about mirrorless cameras is we can now carry smaller and lighter kit. But reviewers complaining about the use of plastics means metal construction is still seen as premium, when in many cases it's not needed.

The details of the drive failures are more nuanced than the flash make. Some (WD) drive controllers will do strange things like encrypt the storage with hardware non user changeable keys. Meaning data recovery shops may be able to read the data but it's in an encrypted form that they can't do anything with.
The other failure mode is when the flash modules can no longer be read/written from (short version is after a certain number of cycles no amount of voltage will read or write to the flash modules).
So one other thing to ask the manufacturers is if the controllers do anything weird to the storage on the flash making it hard to recover data in the case of a controller failure (but where the flash is still useable).

As a reviewer, 100% agree with Sigma. It's a lazy thing for reviewers to "a-ha!" about when it barely matters. Next time you're watching a movie and there's a scene with an obvious focus pull in a static shot, look at the edges and you'll see Hollywood doesn't care either. EDIT: Reviewers should also be opinionated about what matters and what doesn't. When people align with your views, it makes reviews so much more valuable than another Joe Shmoe listing the spec sheet. If they don't align, they have 30 other reviews they can look at. Sorry buds, 0/2

I think the valid point just adjacent to the focus breathing discussion is "the long term effect of being a video-focused content creator changing focus and the preferences of audiences over time". Because the nature of reviewing cameras on youtube requires a focus on video most creators, over time, start to value video features stronger than their audience might actually need. You guys tend to hedge this by having a "photo guy" and "video guy" perspective. But you can see the manufacturers try and cater to the preferences of content creators over time. And that might be totally fine, or be pushing the overall market forward. But there's certainly a warping effect going on, I'd love to hear you guys contemplate that at some point.

One day I discovered that Android supports printing on that printer natively (with lots of options, too). It was a pleasant surprise. 2nd comment, about lenses:
Starting photographers or videographers do not yet always know what they need or do not need so when talking about things like focus breathing, perhaps there should be a bit more explanation when this is or is not an issue.
For myself, I found out about focus breathing when trying to do macro focus stacking before I heard the term in reviews...
And about parfocal zoom lens design, this is also a bit of an issue when shooting wildlife with long zoom lenses and zooming in / out while trying to maintain focus. Modern cameras will try to maintain the focus distance while zooming even on non-parfocal lenses but that is prone to inaccuracies.

1:1 life size ratio works on all size sensors, not just full frame sensors. The only difference is how wide would that image be according to the sensor size; but life size is always just that - life size on any sensor. An example would be 2 maps with the same scale ruler printed, one being a city map another being a state map, if both being say 1cm : 1000m, then both are just that but the city map would be a smaller physical map and thus a smaller sensor; and the state map would be a much large physical map and thus a much larger "sensor". One can put the city map on the state map and both would superimpose the exact size of the city in relation to each other.

It is and it isn't IMO. It depends on the scenario -- for video, it can be a problem, although it can add a bit of an artistic effect to video, but for stills, I would think it's less important since people likely only see one frame (image) and will not necessarily know if one image was intentionally zoomed slightly versus focus breathing, so I would say yes it's being blown out of proportion but for some scenarios there is good reason for concern. Me personally I never really found it to be a huge problem (as I mostly shoot stills myself) and whether something is at 200mm or equivalent 205mm or 195mm is not that relevant to my work, as the slight change in "effective" (or equivalent) focal length is not that important for my shooting style.

  • @skyscraperfan

Isn't focus breathing corrected internally in some cameras? Of course that means adding some cropping, but technically you can already get rid of it.
I still remember when Canon printers "cleaned" themselves each time you plug them in. So you if you unplugged them just to plug them into a different socket, another $2.50 worth of ink was used for cleaning.
If distortion is corrected in the EVF, for me that feels like cheating by the manufacturers. They try to hide lens imperfections. If a lot of the image is cropped because of the distortion, it no longer is a full frame image. A lot of the light is lost.

@@niccollsvideo Cool! I find the AFF X the best 8-weight I have ever used, even better than the CC GLX (Loomis). I have troubleswith the AFF M, not sure why. It feels unbalanced to me. Swing weight doesn't feel right, like they put the butt and tip of two different rods together. Matter of taste I guess.

Chris: "This is the free market working."
    WD to customers: "F you"
Chris: "Exactly. After you lose your data, you think about an alternative source."
Chris, as an image creation educator, it does include saying which situations a particular characteristic matters. For example, Jordan saying that focus breathing rarely matters to photographers, with focus stacking being the exception is excellent teaching.

[22:35] "And then it's up to the consumer to decide if that's a major factor for them." Often the consumer is unsure if it is a major factor for them. Yes, they could go somewhere to learn. Like the Chris & Jordan videos on Petapixel.

I've been using inkjet printers since they came to market. I have NEVER bought replacement OEM ink cartridges. OEM ink costs between $1,000 and $5,000 per gallon. I have refilled OEM HP and Cannon cartridges at home for decades. Currently, I'm refilling and using a HP8610 and a Canon MB2720. I just purchased an Epson 3850 Eco Tank and I'm using aftermarket ink in it.
Epson EcoTanks are the way to go. JUST MAKE SURE THE MODEL YOU BUY HAS A REPLACEABLE WASTE TANK. All inkjet printers use ink to prime an clean the print head(s). The waste ink is collected and when that tank filled up, the printer bricks. The waste tanks for the ET3850 are about $15 from Epson.
If you do your research, you can find reputable companies in the US and Canada that sell high quality ink matched to specific printers. Don't buy from offshore sellers.
I do not have experience with high end photo printers.

the whole focus breathing point kinda boils down to a problem we have these days.... image quality on sensors has plateaued.... glass on lenses have plateaued.... the only real difference between the brands are minor tiny details like AF speed or focus breathing... that nobody actually cares about or needs because it's at such a high level that you can't realistically perceive the difference outside of a review... Every Sigma, Panasonic, Sony, Canon etc etc lens is so good that what a review is kinda pointless...

My, admittedly pessimistic, view on Canon third party glass is that they plan on releasing enough technology and advancements in their cameras and lenses to keep them in first or second place in the market. Then they are going to let every other company not selling as well leave the market. Once it is a market of only two, and from their point of view ideally one, they don't have to let third parties make lenses, they will make all their lenses, and keep all the profit, because there aren't competitors. Sony has deep pockets, and I don't think they are going to leave the market anytime soon though - maybe Canon thinks they can be extremely profitable being locked down, when there are only two options. They kinda want to be the apple of the photography.

I've had 6-7 inkjet printers from several brands and they're all shit. When you print occasionally, the printer nozzles are always clogged. They're empty far too soon. I bought a cheap b/w laserprinter and that always works.
All this because printers are sold far too cheaply so they can make ludicrously high margins on ink. That business model sucks.

The Sandisk situation and WD giving no answers is more or less because WD literally doesn't know what could be going on. SanDisk is not fully integrated with WD yet and they still use separate production facilities. If you ask SanDisk, they won't know what they're allowed to say. It's just THAT stage of a takeover, it takes much longer in the storage space than in any other tech.

The printer cartridge thing has always been a scam. I remember when Epson came out with the P700, the initial ink charge would use something like 75% of all of the ink in the cartridges. And that's like $300 worth of ink, just gone. The supertanks are definitely the future, but the print head tech is still prone to clogs and other failures.
