Thanks for having me on as a guest - it's always great to catch up with you guys! Apologies my video would only stream in 720p, but hopefully my blinding insight will prove sufficiently distracting!
Honestly I'm here for Fuji's Instax success. If it leads to more money for R&D for their enthusiast cameras then it's entirely a win. It's almost like when Porsche started selling SUVs. Some purists hated that a sports car company started making family cars, but that's what keeps the money rolling, and it's the only reason they can keep building even crazier sports cars. If it allows for more cool cameras like the XT-5 and X100V, then that's all you can ask for
I have sister who's on her second Porsche Cayenne. Yeah, not what I'd pick if I had her budget, but on the other hand, it's still a Porsche. Very nice to drive!
And yes, I do use instax fairly regularly. When I go out and shoot street or car shows I love leaving mementos with the people or cars that I photograph. It's like this, people watch photographers work in public but never get to see the output of the spectacle. Instax bridges that gap in a lot of ways. Instantly, too.
I agree with Gordon about premium compacts. The used price of the X100v is now insane. And because you can have a similar experience with a Fuji X-E2 3 or 4, the price of those even used has gone made too as people get those instead of the x100.
From personal experience as a younger person, my roomate has an instax mini 11, and it's the camera that gets taken out drinking and for parties and things, as a social memories thing. What Gordon was saying about not seeing them in tourist destinations makes sense then I think, they're not good for travelling with because they're bulky and the photos are expensive, most people are going to use their phone or a dedicated digital camera that don't pose excessive limitations. So teenagers and young people in bars are the intended audience.
On the global shutter question, I was gonna say, "I agree with Gordon," but then when Jaron said, "I don't think they (Canon) will perhaps do it ever," that just rang so weirdly true to me. I know I've spent forever waiting for things that have never materialized and so I'm going with Jaron, but I am prepared to be shocked by the unexpected.
I agree with Chris, Robotech is my anime and mech of choice (I knew Carl Macek who made the Robotech brand for US) (orig season 1 was Macross in Japan and new series and movies are still occasionally made.) My introduction to anime was in the '60s with Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atomu, Gigantor, Kimba the White Lion, Tobor the 8th Man and others.). Then in the '70s there was Yuusha Raideen, Getta Robo G, UFO Dia Apolon
Nice to have Gordon join…and it made all those other folks accents really stand out. Well done all! My not that bold of a prediction ‘Panasonic will finally come out with a small mft camera with PDAF and (hopefully) IBIS’ . Folks have been clamoring for one, but will they listen? Otherwise you can stay pretty small and light with APSC these days and frankly, for most (not all) folks high MP means little, especially if just on social media.
47:53 spot on Gordon. Sigma making dedicated lenses for this system is the main reason for choosing L mount. The fact of value and build quality vs Sony finished the deal.
A big “Here Here” for Gordon calling out brands other than Fuji for not making a competitor to the Fuji X100V. I’d happily buy another brand’s alternative. (Sony, fingers crossed for a new RX FF with integrated 35mm lens.
Agree completely with Gordon’s bold prediction. No matter the use case, megapixel count is too important of a buying factor to sway major camera companies to move into global shutters in lieu of a higher MP count
Mechanical shutter doesn't eliminate rolling shutter, it's basically like a rolling shutter with maybe a 5ms readout, so it's really good but it's not eliminated.
@@TigaWould Canon R6 for stills and ZCam E2 for video. I'd upgrade for dynamic range but have little interest in more resolution. I do like faster rolling shutter particularly for video, and I will say that the mechanical shutter in my Canon is fast enough for everything I personally shoot.
44:14 Yep, I like Sigma a lot but their camera design is certainly... unique... lol. Hoping to see the new Foveon sensor camera, but I doubt it will show up in 2024. They could really use that Sony global shutter sensor in their FP line!
Congrats on the million! And YES to full program guests. Awesome as always PS podcast intro was epic😂 I see a mini series as intros to some of your reviews maybe?
As someone who works in photo retail, I have to agree with Gordon many people say Polaroid to Instax. They often aren't aware that Instax has nothing to do with Polaroid
How much smaller than the GFX50R / GF 50mm 3.5 could they even go? I feel like in that price and size range you lose very little in terms of compactness by adding an interchangeable lens mount.
Im still looking forward to Rx10 V.. The iv is a full time passenger in my car as its almost always ready for any spur of the moment shot. The software side of it could be enough for me to personally upgrade.
On the underwater camera talk, I know a guy who was part of the photography team for an Olympic level swimming event and they actually constructed their own rig to purpose. It feels like that kind of niche area.
The problem with underwater drones is that even if the price dropped to $1,000, the market would likely be 1% of flying drones. So why would manufacturers want to spend all the R&D for that? In the UK, when an announcement comes over a loudspeaker, they say it’s coming from the Tannoy (a British speaker manufacturer).
I agree with Gordon. From the last thing I’ve read about Canon’s research full frame global shutter sensor, the max resolution was 18.7mp thereabouts. They certainly know that won’t cut it. But within the next five years, they will have a higher resolution global shutter.
Regarding the Instax demand, you guys don't know enough teenage girls haha! These things are crazy popular at parties, picnics and even just documenting daily life... The have walls full of these prints!
I picked up a Nikon AW1 recently. It's a pity about the problems that camera has with its seals because the concept (larger sensor, interchangeable lenses, RAW support etc) is pretty unique. If there was a Z series AW model (AWZ6/7) I would buy it in an instant.
My BOLD predication is a new MFT sensor, with a small MP bump and GX9 GX85 and/or OM Pen style camera products, because there is a demand for such, despite phones, there are a ton lenses to collect and its still such a good system.
I agree. The S5ii/x cameras have been a big boost. But, I too think that Panasonic will bring a new MFT sensor - with PDAF - to keep pace with Sony and other brands releasing new cameras.
@@TechnoBabble because we all know that the AF sucks. Plus, the ones that have good AF are as big as full frame. There's plenty of demand for small, high quality, consumer cameras with good AF. That's why you can barely find an X100V or Ricoh GRIII right now. If micro four-thirds would just pull their finger out and give us the prosumer pocket rocket we crave for $1500 USD or less, they'd find the demand right quick. Maybe give us some quick, quiet, and quality f2 primes and pancakes while they're at it to really seal the deal. Cameras have been too big for too long.
I also think that Canon was going to call the R3 the R1 but then changed their mind because of the A1 and Z9. I think they thought the 4mp increase over the 1DX III and the new eye controlled auto focus would be bigger selling points. I personally love my R3 and shoot it 95% of the time with the R5 filling the rest.
On the Instax discussion, I think the biggest thing is just the printers. I've gifted several, and use the Square for pictures printed to students from say, prom. But I know many people that love just printing from their phones (oversharpened images to compensate because they tend to come out soft) and love having physical images on their wall, fridge, etc etc.
This was the most enjoyable camera podcast I've listened to all year. Possibly ever. It was great to hear the predictions and the "agree" and "disagree" statements from everyone. Very enjoyable! Cheers.
I have really enjoyed this podcast, thanks and I can't wait to see you guys next season. It feels like friends chatting about camera gear and photography which I don't get much of a chance to do. 2 comments. On the foveon sensor side of things, I do believe that Sony is also currently working on 3 layer sensor tech and they may even have some prototype sensors out there. Not sure if these are more for industrial use but it is nice to see others working on them. The rumours still show them being referred to as having 3 times the pixel count instead of just stating that they include full colour information on each pixel but that seems to be how they are marketing them. For large telephoto lenses I do remember the Sigma 300-800 was also a black lens. With lens elements so far apart on that one it would certainly be a candidate for showing issues as the lens changed in temp. Maybe that is another reason they were considerably less expensive that any first party lens. Thanks again, Cheers.
I have worked in broadcast for many a year, mainly with sports with lenses in the x100 range and back in the day many were cream and light beige but today they are almost always dark grey and black! I cannot remember the last time I even saw a light in colour broadcast lens unless it was from twenty years ago!😂
Interesting point on the Instax volume. One place I've seen it a lot is wedding (or other social event) photo booths. You don't have to let someone use your pricey photo printer, and people can just go nuts (and do). Then they go home and get one for themselves.
Thanks for having Gordon, he was the first youtuber camera reviewer that I watch, he was one of the few that reviewed Sony Cameras and talked nice of about them back in 2008 (cnet hated Sony)....Also, we need an Sony alpha a8, that can compete directly with z8 and r5II. Fast fps 42/33 mpx with internal ND (Burano did it, why not an alpha?) for under $4k
As the owner of lots of Olympus cameras and one Fujifilm X-Pro1, I do love the retro camera. But most of the company making retro cameras have some actual retro heritage, even if my Pen-F looks more like the film Pen-F crossed with a Canon IVsb or something than that original Pen-F alone, it's still a very cool camera and reflected something of Olympus' early days without being retro to an absurd point. But with Sony and Panasonic, two camcorder/CE companies who got into stills cameras fairly recently, where do they go for a legit retro look, without looking like someone else's camera, not a Sony or Panasonic?
Back in the '80s I managed a camera store near Newport Beach, CA and one of my customers had a business where he modified certain pro level 35mm film cameras to operate underwater, without a housing.
Speaking about the Instax stuff, we do Santa Photos each year and an optional add on we do is an instant photo in small cardboard frame. They are incredibly popular with our clients.
I have an Instax SP-3 printer, and I take it to social events and give out photos to friends and relatives on the spot... people love them, and they are great for displaying photos on the Frigidaire (what you call a refrigerator) or magnet board.
Folks, OM System is sponsoring this video but not a single prediction on OM Systems or micro four thirds? Very surprised! Or was the sponsorship on the condition you didn't predict what's for them next year? :-). Did I miss this?
I really like Gordon Lang, and Like how you folks along with a few others always get together and chat bouncing thoughts, even one would think you are competitors. Oh and I also like of course Chris and Jordan.
Just looked him up and there is a physical similarity, although most bald blokes kinda look the same. I don't know anything about him, but if he's a red pill misogynist, then I couldn't be more different.
I Gordan's first photographic book, looking forward to the next one. Perhaps a PDF version as well, Would like a PDF version of the first book as well for adding to my travel collection.
bold prediction (...more like a wish): Fuji comes up with fixed lens digital version of TX-1 panoramic range finder style camera (with 2 apsc sensor welded together horizontally)
I still have my Nikon 1 J4 with the underwater housing. I used to use it all the time when I shot party boat events. I think the white lenses are just a style at this point; I have seen black broadcast telephoto lenses as well.
I have two bold predictions: First, Fuji will figure out AF! Secondly, Kasey will not find the perfect camera! Jordan touched on something I've wondered about for a while, FF from Fuji. I've wondered if they will venture into a FF sensor at first just to see if they could get Sony level AF out of it. And, if they did can they then use that research to get it to their APSC sensors.
My bold prediction: Casey will get the Sony A9iii and vlog with it. Global shutter full frame vlogging is the future. Just imagine those squirrel shots with zero rolling shutter.
I agree about the EOS R3 really having been intended to be the EOS R1, for two reasons. If you look back at all sports/wildlife DSLRs in that category, like the EOS 1D X III or Nikon D6, they're relatively low resolution. That was at those times mandatory for high-speed shooting. But once you had the Nikon Z9 and the Sony A1 hitting that market, with plenty of speed, they couldn't sell that as the top-of-the-line. The other reason is strictly structural. The R3 was introduced in late 2021. Those who did not pick up on this expected an R1 in late 2021 or 2022. But if you're considering the notion that the R3 was supposed to be the R1, then there's the full 2-3+ year-or-so cycle for a whole new camera design. Even if it's using many R3 parts for the basics, those aren't the long lead time items. The sensor, yeah, that's an issue, and it has to be a Canon sensor, because this is the flagship!
No bold predictions on my end, but frankly I would be content to see a Canon R1 with a 30-40 MP sensor, dual CFE Type 4.0 slots, and an unlimited buffer at max fps like the 1Dx Mk 3. In all honesty, more than the latest camera I am greatly anticipating the RF 200-500 mm f4 lens.
I hope I not the only broke person watching just because the amazing things camera companies do and the wild price tag they come with 😂

Wondering about the memory cards: Yes, in a sense those manufacturers are lying on the box, but on the other hand I wonder how expensive is this certification (does it only cover the costs of testing or does the association make money with it), how useful are it's results compared to internal testing and how much does it raise the cost of memory cards to the consumers. And what does that certification then provide, as we have seen time and time again how manufacturers switch out components in memory cards/SSD's without changing the product codes. Are they required to re-certificate after every little change? Furthermore, if cameras look for a flag that should be only set after getting this paid certification, do we want a world where memory card manufacturer makes a fast enough card, but it does not support high-data rate modes in cameras just because the card does not have the certification and thus the flag is not set. Even though the card is actually fast enough for those modes. Seems like an arbitrary pay-wall to me.
I loved my Pentax MX. Had it in the 80s, and don’t know what happened to it. Wish I still had it. I recently got a Sony 50mm macro and Nikon slide mount to start scanning the slides from the 80s.
I think the latest movie I have seen in a theatre was at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was "Broker" which was a Korean movie with Japanese Director Kore-eda.

Y'all need to check out the lens colors of Sirui's Sniper series. As far as looks go, they're 🔥🔥🔥. If only they had better optical performance but, hey, some people really appreciate character.
Nikon's only camera release in time for the Olympics will be the Z6iii, so I think they are going for speed with that camera, like 30-40 fps RAW. That will be their sports camera. Maybe a 300 f2.8 lens, too.
My niece, who teaches in Dubai, came back for her brother’s wedding in Wales early this year and bought an Instax for instant photos for the wedding. I still don’t understand her logic compared to using a proper quality camera and printing or sharing after the event to supplement the official photographer’s album.
@@cameralabs I could understand it many decades ago with the original [nasty chemical] Polaroid, when the rival was the Kodak Instamatic film cameras, but today with almost everyone having mobile phones and sharing wirelessly plus the vast majority of us having at least a basic colour printer at home that will print larger and far better than Instax? Beats me! I just don’t get the attraction of what must be one of today’s best selling cameras. I’m so out of touch that its embarrassing.
You should make a pull and send it to the manufacturers. This is what people want. Make an easy one and an advanced one. I´m waiting for Panasonic to make a successor for the gx80 with a batterygrip(full body) and Nikon to make a cheap fx camera(photo) which is focused on ergo. Like big evf, great grip...
I think the a7S line is done. I think Sony will continue small, mirrorless video cameras but only in the FX3/30 style. It would be a huge bummer for me, I love an EVF, but that's my prediction. - Jordan

Gordon is a great guest! And yes, an optical engineer would certainly be a very welcome interview partner
I remember watching Gordon Laing in around 2010 on how to shoot sunsets.
Lang is a mfn beast ….man of the podcast
Why thankyou!
Face it, this "bold prediction list" is really just a fan list of what people want from their favourite camera company.
Gordan Lang is low key looking like Rollo Tomassi more and more each year.
Just looked him up and there is a physical similarity, although most bald blokes kinda look the same. I don't know anything about him, but if he's a red pill misogynist, then I couldn't be more different.
Lol, I was a bit surprised too to see RT here 😂😂😂😂
I Gordan's first photographic book, looking forward to the next one.
Perhaps a PDF version as well, Would like a PDF version of the first book as well for adding to my travel collection.
Thanks for buying my book!
Waving from The Bahamas 🇧🇸 First from this region 🤣
bold prediction (...more like a wish): Fuji comes up with fixed lens digital version of TX-1 panoramic range finder style camera (with 2 apsc sensor welded together horizontally)
Gordon Laing and the PP Boys! Merry Christmas to me!
Merry Christmas!
I still have my Nikon 1 J4 with the underwater housing. I used to use it all the time when I shot party boat events. I think the white lenses are just a style at this point; I have seen black broadcast telephoto lenses as well.
MG Barbatos! It was so satisfying to build.
Great to see the OG Gordon
I can highly recommend the audio podcast intro 😂❤
I think Gordon is absolutely correct. Could you imagine how much a Sony a1ii would cost if it had a global shutter.
L mount needs a video body with variable NDs and another step forward with AF/Rolling shutter then it'll be 'there'
No bold predictions on my end, but frankly I would be content to see a Canon R1 with a 30-40 MP sensor, dual CFE Type 4.0 slots, and an unlimited buffer at max fps like the 1Dx Mk 3. In all honesty, more than the latest camera I am greatly anticipating the RF 200-500 mm f4 lens.
It will be a big year for Pentax in 2024.
I wish Nikon would bring out a new version of the Coolpix A (but no call it a "Coolpix"). It would make a great pocket camera.
Coolpix A is one of my favourite cameras ever.
Very enjoyable listening!😎👍🏾🙏🏾
Best of the series, so far. Chris has kids in Japan?
I went to Japan and brought back my kids some legit Japanese Gundam models.
I loved my Pentax MX. Had it in the 80s, and don’t know what happened to it. Wish I still had it. I recently got a Sony 50mm macro and Nikon slide mount to start scanning the slides from the 80s.
Hoping Gordon will include the Agfa 1280, my first digital. It had an articulating body, came out in 1997.
Absolutely, I have TWO of them right here, one broken, but the other looking hopeful!
💥👍
I think the latest movie I have seen in a theatre was at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was "Broker" which was a Korean movie with Japanese Director Kore-eda.
I adore Kore-eda, I need to check it out.
- Jordan
@@PetaPixel I looked at some Refs. to the movie and in the end, I thought this trailer was good: "Broker Trailer #1 (2022)", posted by "Rotten Tomatoes Indie" on Dec 1, 2022, [length 2:09] "ruclips.net/video/uPEUj7BPl2Q/видео.html"
😂😂 i read the thumbnail as "paid predictions"!
Y'all need to check out the lens colors of Sirui's Sniper series. As far as looks go, they're 🔥🔥🔥. If only they had better optical performance but, hey, some people really appreciate character.
I use Instax during portrait shoots so I can give the subject a memento of the shoot they can take with them.
Bold prediction - any new model with a microphone jack and even a pretence of being hybrid and/or video oriented will do 32 bit float audio internal
i love instax, used it regularly for 6 years
Nikon's only camera release in time for the Olympics will be the Z6iii, so I think they are going for speed with that camera, like 30-40 fps RAW. That will be their sports camera. Maybe a 300 f2.8 lens, too.
A new RX100 is my #1 hope for 2024.
My niece, who teaches in Dubai, came back for her brother’s wedding in Wales early this year and bought an Instax for instant photos for the wedding. I still don’t understand her logic compared to using a proper quality camera and printing or sharing after the event to supplement the official photographer’s album.
They're very popular at weddings!
Do u people think we will ever seen interchangeable lenses in smartphones or fixed lens but with a larger sensor (mft/apsc)?
You should make a pull and send it to the manufacturers. This is what people want. Make an easy one and an advanced one. I´m waiting for Panasonic to make a successor for the gx80 with a batterygrip(full body) and Nikon to make a cheap fx camera(photo) which is focused on ergo. Like big evf, great grip...
God I wish there was more premium compacts
1:18:25 I know that Tamron did make a weird "all mount" 300mm white lens at some point, because one's on sale on my local FB Marketplace.
What about the A7sIV , do you guys think it will release next year?!
I think the a7S line is done. I think Sony will continue small, mirrorless video cameras but only in the FX3/30 style. It would be a huge bummer for me, I love an EVF, but that's my prediction.
- Jordan
@@PetaPixel Thanks for replying! Man that is a bummer, I am looking to upgrade and since As7iii is ~3yrs old I was hoping to waiting for A7sIV, which would be perfect for me since I am a hybrid shooter.
X100 with a full frame high MP sensor with 28mm lens would make it a Leica Q2 or Q3 competitor
