I loved the OM System partnership. And had no idea about their rugedness and testing process! Let them invite you on a tour or interview so we get to know more. I wish they catch up to the big brands in technology and capability. Would love to see x1 per brand video where you explain in a nutshell an overview of the different systems, including main bodies, lenses and adapters. You did a similar thing in a 1 hour podcast for another channel. And I absolutely loved this format. You three have a great bond, and it's a pleasure to listen to in a more free and less scripted format. Grab a beer next time or do it at an outdoor bbq etc. :) - have fun whilst recording the podcast.
Great show guys. Very informative and humorous! I recently got an OM1, so good to hear the Chris uses one too. Good luck with Fuji 🤔. looking forward to your next show. Best wishes to you all. 👍
It's great that you're doing a podcast. It's nice to see that Chris and Jordan are as witty and sharp minded as they appear in videos, also in more candid format like this. Jaron complements the duo well as a host, which is great. It's already starting very good and judging by how group podcasts tend to go, it will get even better as time goes. Nice! ...but please set your layout properly. Seeing PetaPixel logo off center in between frames triggered my OCD.
I’m usually skeptical of sponsored content but this is good! Also kudos for landing OM Systems as your sponsor. Have high hopes from them after the fabulous 90 mm macro.
Please go through Jorden's video setup, his quality looks amazing! I would love to know what camera he is using, lens, lighting, and how it is connected.
I used the Sony ZV-E1 in 1080/30P webcam mode. Lens was a Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 @ F4. Mic is the Sennheiser Profile USB, and lighting was an Aputure Amaran 200X with a big-ass softbox. Worth mentioning that the camera did overheat as we were wrapping up, so I'd expect a new setup next week. -Jordan
That was an outstanding presentation! My interest was held from beginning to end. Hats off to all three commentators! One more thing: it’s a Z not not a Zed. Ha! Ha!
Re: "The track record on 3rd party batteries is pretty good", that's not really that simple, or simply not true. I bought 3rd party batteries and they didn't preform well. The seemed fine at first, but then they would die out of the blue and only last half or less of the time an original battery will normally last. I'm on Canon and Panasonic cameras. I have Canon batteries that are 10yo and still use with very small performance decline. My third party batteries were all under different brands, not fake Canon or Panasonic.
Very interesting discussions. I never had any trouble with third party batteries in Fujifilm and Olympus cameras. However, since moving to Leica, I stick to their own batteries, despite the cost. Part of the reason is that third party batteries to fit most Leicas aren't readily available from makers that I trust and have used before.
This sounds more like Chris and Jordan are being interviewed by a 3rd party than an actual podcast. We need it to be like their year-end drunken wrap-ups where they let loose and are their real selves!
That's fair. I would definitely like to bring some of the annual best/worst flavor into the show. We record these in the morning but it's happy hour somewhere right!
Thank you guys, I was informed and entertained! Jorden, Your shot is how I wanted to look in my work meetings. Casual news guy. I've never seen it done to perfection like you did here, outside of a studio. Now I can stop trying to figure it out. Sorry too perfect for my face, not that YOU didn't pull it off. I really enjoyed this podcast, please keep them coming. In regards to the Nikon Z 8, as a D750 user, it finally made sense to me to purchase it. Nikon had lost sales to Fuji (X-T5) and Panasonic (G9) during my hiatus. I love to shoot wildlife but the Z 9 was way too big and the Z 6/Z 7 underwhelmed me. I LOVE my X-T5 and the portability of the G9 but really look forward to using Z 8.
Fujifilm already saying there might be delays on the X-S20. They only seemed to send out cameras to small channels early. I’m thinking about preordering one as a X-S10 owner. I hope you do a review at some point
Great idea to make a podcast! I had the impression that - at least on the ios podcast - the voices of Jordan and Chris were different to in the videos. But maybe it's my brain that has to adjust to not seeing your faces 🤷🏽♂️ Anyways, GREAT stuff and looking forward to your xs-20 review ;-)
I think it has more to do with the fact that the Z 8 is a 8K camera, that is expected to get a little hot. Lithium batteries don't like hot. It is not like they will burn, but there is a chance of them expanding i volumen. Not a good thing inside a camera. Also, the "I never had an accident. Good podcast… My only gripe is when people say that a certain computer is overkill. It’s never overkill. Unless your grandma. Imagine buying a Tesla and you can never go over 60 miles an hour. And you said to yourself - well, I’m never gonna drive over 60 miles an hour. That’s complete BS. I have the top-of-the-line Mac Studio ultra… And I don’t regret a single moment. And when I need the power, it’s there!
Just listened to the podcast, love to know you read *all* the comments. 😉 I’d love to see a video covering your storage workflow. Do you always shoot videos direct in-camera to SD / CF Express cards, or also on external recorders like the Ninja V+? Do you then transfer footage to internal storage on your MacBook, or an external USB drive for editing? Once you’ve shot and edited an episode, what do you do with the original footage? Is it transferred to external SSDs, hard drives or even tape? Do you only keep a copy of the final edit or all the raw footage?
I bought 2 Watson EL15c recently from B&H as that page on the site said they were compatible with my Z8. When I placed & tried both in the battery compartment without turning on the camera I got a non-compatible screen warning. I sent them back to B&H in exchange for the Nikon OEM 15C. Live & learn😒
A MacBook Air (13 or 15) question: is the base 8 GB RAM model good enough for a photographer using LR or Capture One (Fujifilm X-T5 compressed Raw) or should I upgrade to 16 GB? (currently using M1 iPad Air)
Good question Michael - my thoughts are, yes it would be fine enough initially - however as the months and years go by the software you are using will become more powerful and nuanced - thereby slowing “older” machines. This must be is occurring now with your current Mac or you’d not be considering moving up. In short, consider a few years out and add as many upgrades as you can afford with memory, drive space and processor. For example, the base MacMini is good value today but would be a good workhorse in a few years, I think not - and logically speaking - it can’t be. The other consideration, a higher specked Mac will sell more easily.
Why do you need to upgrade a practically new computer? Keep your current computer for at least 5 or more years. I still have my 2009 MacBook Pro. I added more RAM 8gb then a 1 tb hard drive. Recently I had to replace the battery.
Enjoyed the chat about Macs. I have a pc and use Lightroom Classic (stills only no video) and am wondering if a MacBook Air with 8G of ram will run it ok? Finding new Nonoise brutally slow on my Dell Laptop. Thanks!
At 42min, yes, the “new” Mac Pro does seem confusing, but I think it’s still the “same” top performance Mac Pro. As long as you consider the (rumored) Apple Silicon hierarchy of chips: 2x Max -> Ultra, (rumored) 2x Ultra -> Extreme chips. The problem appears to be that the M1 UltraFusion crossbar did not fulfill its duties and became a performance bottleneck for the Ultra, and given that technical glitch and shortcoming, Apple was no longer in any engineering/marketing position to release the double-crossbar required for their (rumored) 4x Extreme chip. I.e., the Mac Pro has no M1 Extreme nor any M2 Extreme chip to boost its performance above and beyond the Mac Studio. Given that situation, I am happy and proud for Apple to have released the M2 Ultra Mac Studio alongside the hobbled Mac Pro, despite the marketing confusion/backlash, because it enables the rest of us to get a tuned up Mac Studio. This theory about the Mac Pro going beyond the “same” should bear fruit when the 3nm M3 (?) Apple Silicon arrives, I hope. If the M2 UltraFusion crossbar overcomes the M1 Ultra GPU performance bottleneck, then Apple engineering will (in theory) have what they need to design double-crossbar (ExtremeFusion?) Apple Silicon. So for the next generation 3nm Mac Pro, we should see a machine that doubles the performance of the Mac Studio, assuming the NG Mac Studio does not also sport a M3 Extreme Apple Silicon as well (I am guessing not). On a further note, that NG (hypothetical) 3nm Extreme chip will (according to rumors) have revised GPUs with ray tracing, more RAM (guessing: Ultra 192GB->256GB?), faster design CPU/GPU/NE for performance boost, faster performance (5nm -> 3nm), and lower power, lower heat. The upcoming iPhone 15 will presumably demonstrate the benefits of the 3nm process. For the NG Mac Pro, an NG Extreme chip will have 2x Ultra estimated 256GB memory. So the NG Mac Pro with 512GB will be at 1/3 the 1.5TB of the outgoing Intel Mac Pro. That extra memory will bring the NG Mac Pro much closer to the workload of the outgoing Intel RAM-wise, as well as raising the bar for all the AI LLM hotness going forward. So despite current Gen1 appearances, I think the Apple Silicon Mac Pro will still retain a unique spot in the line up as the top performer, and for more than the niche the current “confusing” Mac Studio par configuration demonstrates. Fingers crossed.
Battery blocking: 1) A run away Li battery is unstoppable for normal people as not many people/places have type D extinguisher (only way to stop a metal fire). Just look back at the Samsung Note 7 incident to know why we can't ship Li battery in checked luggage, and our power banks must be
It's terrifying that Bebop spun off and shuttered all these companies to grab one magazine. Capitalism at its worst, destroying useful information and careers to position one already rich company slightly better.
Great to have more of you guys! Love it! A little constructive feedback: I know taking sponsorships is important to make this financially viable, but I would encourage PetaPixel to avoid sponsorships from the brands who’s products are amongst those regularly being reported on/reviewed. “Independent news outlet” is at odds with “accepting money from camera manufacturers”. Whether conscious or unconscious, humans are incredibly susceptible to bias. PetaPixel is obviously aware of the value of independence as a source of social currency, so perhaps avoiding camera manufacturer sponsorships as sources of direct revenue would be better in the long run to preserve audience trust?
Thanks for the feedback! We do have this rule in place when it comes to review content. We are very strict with our reviews process and the editorial wall we have there. Additionally, the writing and reviews team do not have any interaction with the sales process.
Maarten Heilbron from RUclips who does wonderful in detail reviews, including many Fuji cameras recently pulled the plug because he could not get hold of product to review, what I have noticed is that so many big retailers (who camera companies have to look after) have gone the RUclips route like Camera Store did years ago. and have growing channels. so I just dont think you can take your brand for granted in this medium , camera companies are spending their launch Budgets carefully, the Pana S5 2 went to very cherry picked reviewers, some not the biggest RUclipsrs and had the camera to use as long as they were making content on it, Jared Polin did not get on.!
You could increase your audience if you offered an easy way to download an mp3 file. I gave up on this podcast because youtube is not a medium for audio podcasts, and your alternative podcast options only offer .mp4 files.
I have been waiting for your Fujifilm xs20 review as well. I saw hundreds of small channels reviewing it so I am very surprised and suspicious why you didn't get it? I have noticed all videos taken with it have very distinctive pink tint on faces. Photos look very good but this pink faces stop me from even considering it. They say Fujifilm has great colours and 19 film simulations. Maybe, but I want just one picture profile in which my face looks like human face not Barbie. I might go to the camera shop to try it out as I love the form factor and 6k open gate. My first digital camera was Fujifilm point and shoot so I am not prejudiced. I have canon M50 and I am used to realistic colours on my face. I don't think it's too much to ask. If I want create artistic portraits than it's fine.
This was a really enjoyable podcast. Chris, i recommend changing your colors to match the episodes sponsor's colors so as to keep that money rolling in. Looking forward to the next episode and seeing Petapixel thrive as so many photocentric media companies are disappearing.
@@jeffreywrightphotography Ah, yes. Loved that Blue and "Sun-yellow" colour combination. OM System is a bit boring in comparison and unfortunately they were not able to get the name "Olympus" for "personal image and video capturing devices".
I do not completely agree with Chris at 1:00:10 when he says that "[The Z8] isn't like the D700" The Z8 is VERY much like the D700, in almost all aspects. Both the D700 and the Z8 are just smaller versions of their flagship counterparts released about a year prior (D3 and Z9), with still a pretty high pricepoint and a very profesionnal target audience (From Nikon themselves about the D700: it was supposed to be a better secondary camera to a pro shooting a D3 that didn't want to have to pay for a second one, kinda replacing the D300 in that role). I might add that the D700's pricepoint was 3000 USD, which is like 4100 USD adjusted for inflation, not too different from the Z8's pricepoint today. I agree about the D750 though. It was their cheapest full frame camera at the time they released it, taking the steps of the D600 and D610 before, those were very much mid range cameras intended for everyone.
If Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc just charged reasonable margins on their batteries and accessories rather than gouge as hard as they can, it wouldn't be so terrible.
The headset will not replace a monitor, the whole display is 2160p, so you're not getting 4k resolution on a simulated monitor, text will have to be much larger
My Z5 is very picky with 3rd party batteries. My Z6 will reject older 3rd party batteries, but most will work. My D600 will take any 3rd party en-el15 I throw in it. I've also got a 3rd party AC adapter that works with the D600/Z6, but the Z5 gives the same "unrecognized battery" error. (at least the Z5 can take a USB power bank)
It's a real mistake not to send you the Fuji for review. The reviews have never been anything but honest from Chris and Jordan. The channels that pander are even more pandering to manufacturers now or they go total clickbait in the titles. That Tony Northop guy is Mr. clickbait these days, and I have noted some channels where the hired influencers have become bigger shills than they used to be. In fact I noticed a lot of RUclips in the last six months to a year has gone deeper into clickbait mode, or maybe it's their algorithm. It has gotten to the point where I check the don't recommend channel when the title or thumb nail is overly click bait. It's like video spam. That Pat2tech or whatever channel is all Fuji kissy kissy all the time, I mean he's basically the "Fuji guys" all in one person. Aside from that RUclips went ad crazy in the last couple of years, constant, constant icons in the videos just total noise, so, they forced me to ad block. If RUclips want to get real, they should hire the channel to insert an ad or sponsor directly in the video. Then the ad can't be blocked. Good content. Chris and Jordan deserved better than the jackass crap that Amazon did to DPReview.
Hey John Jon I like what you say, but I'm afraid I have to take exception to your message about Pal2Tech. Pal2Tech is unashamedly a Fuji enthusiast channel, and people love it, but he will critique Fuji when necessary, absolutely. We and Fuji are all the better for it, as features he has banged on about or quite certainly stressed have made it into newer models. Three come to mind straight away for the S20 or recent models, such as full HDMI, red record frame, headphone jack, there could be more. (X-T5 missed out on some (arrgh) as Fuji has poised the T5 as a photo first camera of T1 size). Cheers.
No image with non-minor adjustments should be called a photo as far as I'm concerned. Minor being colour adjustments, technical corrections and light retouching. Removing (or adding) something that (doesn't) belong to the scene? Not a photo.
Chris looks like he’s finally living out his radio DJ dreams.
Love to see Petapixel invest in their content creation so strongly. Looking forward to see where this podcast goes!

Just look back at the Samsung Note 7 incident to know why we can't ship Li battery in checked luggage, and our power banks must be
I'm for gen AI and if you post something in the public space, it's fair game. As long as the results are transformative
😴
Channels with 100 subscribers getting a review copy is ridiculous.
Leaf shutter is one of the main reasons I bought the Q2
Never mind the Z8. The Z5 does more than most amateur photographers need.
Ouch, the Apple Headset is way too expensive...
You could increase your audience if you offered an easy way to download an mp3 file. I gave up on this podcast because youtube is not a medium for audio podcasts, and your alternative podcast options only offer .mp4 files.
You're absolutely right and that will be fixed in next week's episode.
@@PetaPixel Give me a mp3, and you will get a lifetime listener. Mono, 44.1 files are best, but I'll take any mp3 available.
was that a lytro in the opening cartoon?
What even is OM Systems company colours? I feel like I should know.
@@niccollsvideo Black, unfortunately 🤣
@@thomasa.243 I'll just pretend they still use Olympus blue. Then Chris kicked off the the episode with the right colours.
@@jeffreywrightphotography Ah, yes. Loved that Blue and "Sun-yellow" colour combination. OM System is a bit boring in comparison and unfortunately they were not able to get the name "Olympus" for "personal image and video capturing devices".
I do not completely agree with Chris at 1:00:10 when he says that "[The Z8] isn't like the D700"
The Z8 is VERY much like the D700, in almost all aspects.
I’d love your opinion on AI tools and photography competitions. At what point does something stop being a photo and become something else?
Stupid Nikon, first encrypted White Balance, now this? Nice podcast, thanks! :-)
PetaPixelPodcast... that's a lot of plosives.
I'm gonna add PowerParty to the end of that
Excellent podcast
I’d buy Nikon factory batteries if they still sold them for my camera.
which camera?
If Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc just charged reasonable margins on their batteries and accessories rather than gouge as hard as they can, it wouldn't be so terrible.
Hell yeah, first decent photo podcast?
The headset will not replace a monitor, the whole display is 2160p, so you're not getting 4k resolution on a simulated monitor, text will have to be much larger
Harry Benson’s photo I think of some president and Marylin by Elliot Erwitt were redone by Andy Warhol without permission.
Love it love it! Is there an RSS for podcast apps anywhere?
Here you go! anchor.fm/s/e3085708/podcast/rss
