Hi Alanda, I have made this bag many times. It is wonderful, and so easy to make. I'm making another one for my great niece, and for my daughter in law! Thank you very much for sharing your talent!
That is great to hear 😊. We love seeing the results made from our tutorials. Perhaps you would like to share some photos of your bags on our website. Here is link if you are interested www.alandacraft.com/category/readers-projects/
Oh My.... such a fun and somewhat simple project! I just started 'quilting classes' and this is sorely needed. Thank You for your precise instructions and visuals. I'm digging in soon! Thank You again....
Literally just finished making this bag, sewing along with the video. I put pockets on both sides of the gussets as well. I love it! I am very novice but maybe some of the gussets weren't perfect but you can't tell by looking at the bag. Thank you so much!
I really love the idea of putting pockets on the gussets as well. This is such a great sized bag that has so many uses. And just remember only you know the gussets aren't perfect, nobody else will even notice. :)
I just made this bag & it came out great! It was my first time making one & I'm so happy how it turned out.. great instructions, easy to follow except the gussets but I got through it.. thank you for sharing
That's great Debbie. Maybe you would like to share some photos of your bag on the website. Here is the link in case you are interested www.alandacraft.com/submit-your-project/. Yes, those gussets can be a little tricky, :)
Thank you very much for this very interesting tutorial I'm going to make my daughter one of these, only not so big. She looves pockets, lol. Saludos from Barcelona and many thanks!
+Joyce Rigg Thank you Joyce. Honestly you will love this bag, it is so big and apart from using it for craft it makes a great market bag. Happy sewing. :}
what a great video/instructor..teacher a beautiful bag..I WANT MAKE A BIGGER BAG TO CARRY MY YARD STICK..MY CUTTER..AND MY BIG MAT!!its hard to carry them when you go teach how to so this that!!a flat bag!!not to flat..thanks much love ur teachings!!
Thank you for your lovely comment Sylvia. :) I am so happy you like the bag. It certainly makes carrying your craft stuff around a lot easier. Makes a great market bag as well.
This was super easy to follow and my bag turned out sooo good. Ive been looking for a bag big enough to carry all of my sewing equipment and a few bolts of fabric its so perfect for me. I love it so much. Is there any where i can post a picture of it so you all can see it?
Romanitta Stith I've just sent you a message with our email address. If you'd like to email it to us we will add it to our site. Would love to see how it came out.
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial, I have a request, can I know the dimensions of the bag, and especially the sides of which Mrs. sewn to fit - this is important, thank you for your understanding.
@Heather Haslett This is a Frixion Pen. These are just fantastic for sewing but there are a couple of things to keep in mind when using them. Here is a link to our webpage where you can see a video and our review. www.alandacraft.com/frixion-pen-review-fabric-pens-for-quilters/
Alanda I have been trying to find the measurements for The Big Craft Bag/Market Tote Bag. I love this bag. I live upstair this will make a nice market bag so I will not have to make so many trip up staira.
I love your tutorials and would like to make this bag. But if I want to put a zipper on, shpuld the gussets in the lining reach the recessed opening or just below it? I have trouble imagining these things, so I need your help. Thanks.
A great tutorial thanks so much! I am a painter and get so sick of lugging canvases or pads of paper and all the other stuff...this will be so useful! Also, please tell me - did I imagine it or does your iron do something clever to avoid burning your board??
fearofpaint Companies just don't seem to realise that they are doing themselves a disservice by not providing items like the Oliso iron to different countries. Considering the item is available in Australia with the correct plug attached. It's such an awesome product.
I love this huge utility bag perfect for all my craft needs when I go to events and such, just a question I don't want to make it reversible what are the measurements and fabric I need?
+Melanie Smith If you don't want it reversible, this implies that you don't want a lining. Without a lining the seams will show and it won't be as sturdy because you will not have the interfacing. Also, the handles would need to be attached in a different manner so basically it would be nothing like the original. However, the measurements for the outside of the bag are on the website here if you still want to give it a go. www.alandacraft.com/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
well let me tell you what happen to my big craft bag. I couldn't figure why I couldn't get the gussets to fit. In the past I have done bags before and I new that I was doing right. I discover that I didn't cut the yardages correct. I rip out the gussets . The bag is not as deep as yours. but it turn out nice. I love the iron fleece. will try the right way again
We used fusible fleece for this bag, but you can also use batting. Probably a low loft batting would be the best thing to use, you don't want anything too thick. We use warm & natural for most of our projects. warmcompany.com/. Here is a link to the written tutorial for you www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
+Bill Stokes We used fusible fleece in this bag, but you could also use just quilting batting. Either will work well but the fusible fleece was easy to work with because once it was ironed on it just stayed in place, which was ideal when working with such a big bag.
Thank you for answering, i went and bought some quilting material. Looking forward to getting started on this. The pen you use that disappears wen ironed whats it called please :-)
You can make it larger to accommodate a bigger mat, but I don't have instructions for making a larger size. Here is a link to the written instructions, you may be able to work it out from there www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
I think you will find this one is huge. To widen it you will need to adjust the size at the bottom to whatever size you want your gusset to be and adjust the side panels to the same sizel. This will probably shorten the bag so you will want to add some inches to the height. I find this bag is quite big enough for the market any bigger I would be putting too much into it and it would be too heavy to carry.
I haven't ever had a problem with this. The lining is heavy and it fits well enough so that it stays put. After reading your comment I tested the bag and found I had to really pull at the lining to separate it and pull it out.
Here are the measurements Brenda The finished bag measure approx. 19½” wide x 22″ and the side gussets measure 4″. Here is a link to the step by step written tutorial as well www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
Dana Fucella I feel that this stabiliser could be too firm for this bag. We used a medium weight interfacing. You might find that a heavyweight interfacing may make it more difficult to turn the bag through plus it may be too stiff to work with when sewing the rounded part of the gusset to the bag.
Hi I really love the size of this bag, I tried to click on the website for measurements & instructions but it kept giving me error message is there another way I can get the info???
I just tried the link and it is working so not sure what the problem might be. I'll just add the link again here so give that a go: www.alandacraft.com/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
The materials and sizes that you need are on the website Daisy. Here is the link www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
Sounds like your machine needs a good oiling, it's way too squeaky and loud. Your sewing machine will cost you a lot to have it fix for something that is simple to do. The tote is pretty cool though. Hard to watch you sew with the loud machine which takes away your message.
Thank you for your comment. Im glad you like the bag. This is an old machine and it had just been serviced. I don't talk while sewing, so it is easy just to fast forward through it. This was in the early days have learned a lot about filming since then.
Well, you might want to mute it while you're sewing for your viewers. I tried to mute it but was afraid I would miss something. I have a Serger and a sewing machine (10 plus yrs old) never had to serviced because I keep it lubed/oiled. Too bad you can't make this more enjoyable for people like me who are looking for different ways to make a tote. I'll take some of your hints because they are neat but other steps are not needed when one has Serger.
tokyorosa, maybe it may appear rude but I am severely hearing impaired and any background noise nakes it impossible to get the message. Have a good day since you are clueless that they're people with disabilities.

Thank you, you are most welcome 😊. This is a great bag for taking to craft classes or the market.
Fantastic, such detail and care. Thank you

carylanne rosten thank you Carylanne. We love our big bags, they are really awesome when you need a bag with plenty of room and heaps of pockets.

You are very welcome, Karen. I love this bag, it is so practical.
Thank you Alana for answering about the white iron on fleece you used.
first time i have seen bags done this way very good and handy to take all with you thank you
Thank you for a great tutorial. A big craft bag is always needed and beautiful ones are worth making.
Thank you Tina. I totally agree, one can never have enough really big craft bags.

Please can i get the smaller size from this bag? Because i am beginner.? Thank you so much , your way is quite classy and perfect for me .
I'm sorry and much as I would love to help I don't have instruction for a smaller size.

fearofpaint Just to answer my own question I see you use the Oliso iron - not available in UK - I am heartbroken!!
Fabulous tutorial!!
fearofpaint Companies just don't seem to realise that they are doing themselves a disservice by not providing items like the Oliso iron to different countries. Considering the item is available in Australia with the correct plug attached. It's such an awesome product.
fearofpaint thank you for the kind comment on the tutorial. We certainly get a lot of use from our big tote bags.
Alanda Craft - you are so right! I have contacted Oliso to see if they have plans to make a UK version....they are missing a trick I think!
I love this huge utility bag perfect for all my craft needs when I go to events and such, just a question I don't want to make it reversible what are the measurements and fabric I need?

+Janice Griffith Well, it's good to hear that the bag still turned out okay in the end.
Hola, que tipo de guata utilizas?. Muy bonito el bolso, caben muchas herramientas de costura... gracias

How can I add a zipper closure in top ?
What is also calr bag but full good
Hello. What are you using for that white batting? I enjoy watching & learning from you making these nice bags. Thank you. Angel S.
+Bill Stokes We used fusible fleece in this bag, but you could also use just quilting batting. Either will work well but the fusible fleece was easy to work with because once it was ironed on it just stayed in place, which was ideal when working with such a big bag.

Friction pen
Do you think this bag would be doable for a larger cutting mat, size 24x36"?
You can make it larger to accommodate a bigger mat, but I don't have instructions for making a larger size. Here is a link to the written instructions, you may be able to work it out from there www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
i love how big the tote is, but i would like to widen it and turn it into a market bag. how do I go about it ?
I think you will find this one is huge. To widen it you will need to adjust the size at the bottom to whatever size you want your gusset to be and adjust the side panels to the same sizel. This will probably shorten the bag so you will want to add some inches to the height. I find this bag is quite big enough for the market any bigger I would be putting too much into it and it would be too heavy to carry.
Did you use regular cotton fabric or a canvas fabric?
These were made with quilting cotton Cindy, but I can't see why you couldn't use a canvas material.
@@alandacraft Thank you. Did you use fusible fleece on both sides of the gussets or 1 side fleece & the other interfacing?
How do you keep the lining from coming out/up when you pull items out? I figured that the lining would be stitched to the bottom at the corners
I haven't ever had a problem with this. The lining is heavy and it fits well enough so that it stays put. After reading your comment I tested the bag and found I had to really pull at the lining to separate it and pull it out.
Can I get the sized on the big raft bag
Here are the measurements Brenda The finished bag measure approx. 19½” wide x 22″ and the side gussets measure 4″. Here is a link to the step by step written tutorial as well www.alandacraft.com/2014/08/12/the-very-big-craft-bag-by-alanda-craft/
I have Ultra Firm Heavyweight sew-in stabilizer by HTC Retail Division. Would that work for the interfacing?
Dana Fucella I feel that this stabiliser could be too firm for this bag. We used a medium weight interfacing. You might find that a heavyweight interfacing may make it more difficult to turn the bag through plus it may be too stiff to work with when sewing the rounded part of the gusset to the bag.
I realize this is an older video, do you sell these bags? I have no place to make one of my own....
I am sorry Shelly but we don't sell the items we make, we make them simply for the tutorials and then we use them as giveaways to family and friends.
Alanda Craft Thank you....bummer that you don’t sell them, I bet you’d make lots of $$$ from people like me that have no space to make our own!
Hi I really love the size of this bag, I tried to click on the website for measurements & instructions but it kept giving me error message is there another way I can get the info???
