    The production of this show was really fast and loose and there's holes like this everywhere. As much as we all love it, it was all made to sell toys so strict adhesion to cannon was likely second at best. I think this explanation is really good and it looks like with the new trilogy series they are attempting to fix a lot of this as well. In 1984 they probably had no idea that they were creating something that would last this long and grow even larger in popularity over the decades. I'll probably always be impressed by what became of what was really just a way to import some robot toys from japan in the early to mid 80s. Thanks for gluing the Devastator origin story together. Hasbro should hire you!

    This video was great, I think it would be good to mention that there is another constructicon that might have been among the ones in Megatron's construction named Hightower, he got a toy on the Classics toyline and transforms into a crane.
    His Tfwiki article says that he dislikes his teammates, he is pretty much a mobile chemistry lab and loves anything that kills like poisons and explosives, some lines from his appearance in the comic "Crossing over" imply that Scrapper is dead so he might be either a reconstructed Scrapper or Mixmaster since both are missing from that Devastator but there is nothing confirmed.

    *The Enemy Scrotum.*
    As for the Origin of the Constructicons, I like to think of it the sort of same way as the Combaticons. They had their minds stored on Cyber Tron cause their bodies were destroyed earlier in the war, and one day with the Space Bridge they brought the minds here and rebuilt their bodies on Earth.

  • @revinevan300
    @revinevan300 3 года назад +11

    This is basically how I viewed their origin:
    1. They first built Megatron.
    2. Megatron reprogrammed them, giving them their combining ability.
    3. They were destroyed somehow, but then rebuilt on Earth with new bodies.

    • @maximoomega3691

    The Constructicons are unique in that they're a team of Decepticons who actually want to BUILD UP, not just mindlessly TEAR DOWN. As a kid, it saddened me that they were Robosmashed from good to evil. 😢 Wheeljack and Perceptor developing a gadget to REVERSE those effects is a tale waiting to be told! 😉
    And the green and purple colour scheme was not only a great and striking idea, it fit in perfectly with the traditional bad guy colour scheme that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby put forth in early Marvel Comics. (Good guys, primary colours. Bad guys, secondary colours.)

    I kind of dig the idea that Hauler was terrified Omega Supreme would lump him in with the rest of the Constructicons, possibly making him change his color the way we see in the first episode. Maybe he made it a point to go on energy search missions as far away as possible once he got wind of rumors Omega had made it to earth. Would kind of explain why he's M.I.A. in the series.
    Maybe he also went back to his preferred color scheme once he finally had a sit down with the big guy 😁

    Love the video, Rodimus Primal. I think their origin story conflicts are really just a case of multiple writers on a very tight production schedule. If they could have had more time and limited who wrote the episodes they likely would have caught these conflicts when fleshing out their stories. But since the cartoon was essentially a 30 minute toy commercial, Hasbro executives just wanted to get these episodes out as quickly as possible. It is a shame that they didn't allocate the proper amount of time and detail that they could have. I still love the toys and love to rewatch the episodes anyways.

    I never considered the idea of the Constructicons being rebuilt on earth. Interesting theory. I always just tried not to think about it and decided that the Omega Supreme story simply retcons the Heavy Metal War origin away. • @ValosiTiamata
      @ValosiTiamata 4 года назад +1

      The explanation is one that circulated around more with us G1-era Pro-'Cons than with the Pro-'Bot fans because we loved delving into the nuances of Decepticon culture and complexity (the close partnership between Megatron, Soundwave, and and Starscream, for example). As the show outwardly liked to claim Decepticons were always evil (despite quite a few events in the cartoon showing the opposite), a lot of fans never considered they had a cultural structure similar to that of the Klingons in the original Star Trek timeline.
      For us Pro-'Cons, Autobots and Decepticons are cultures, not races, who were designed with very different purposes by the Quintessons. The Constructicons were something apart from both main roles, as they were neither service or military function specifically but could serve both roles as required. Thus the Crystal City origin made perfect sense, and the fact that many Transformers were given new bodies over the course of G1 (such as the Combaticons or Soundwave and Blaster in the Japanese Headmasters) just fit in naturally.
      There's also a theory about the Dinobots having a more complex origin story in the cartoon continuity, but (as Rodimus would say) that's a story for another day.

    • @geeboysgamesandmore49
      @geeboysgamesandmore49 4 года назад +1

      @@ValosiTiamata well unlike the Klingons in Star Trek, Decepticons for the most part have no concept of honor. Megatron believes that everything is a tool for his conquest.

    • @ValosiTiamata
      @ValosiTiamata 3 года назад +1

      @@BrotherDerrick3X Surprisingly enough, honour was a big factor in a lot of Decepticon storylines in the G1 cartoon. It became especially apparent when Galvatron appeared and began booting Decepticons from his ranks when they attempted to do the honourable thing. That's one of the reasons Galvatron was so hated by his own minions - like modern politicians, he ruled through fear and was completely insane.
      I do agree, though, that most continuities beyond the G1 cartoon display the Decepticons in a different light. You see that code of honour appear here and there, but it's an unstable concept at best. I put it down to the fact that most TF shows and comics are more about the entertainment and less about the message these days.
      Which brings up an odd aspect of the G1 and Beast Wars cartoons. G1 was meant to be a children's show and while the writing was often lacklustre, you could find a surprising amount of depth in it. A lot of contemporary real life issues were addressed in the show, but almost always in a toned down manner. The sequel/prequel Beast Wars blended aspects of the cartoon and comic and was made for more mature audiences. It tackled social issues a bit more blatantly, although the setting limited the stories that could be discussed. The genocide of the Decepticons was one of the most prominent carryovers from the G1 cartoon, which had already begun in s3 on a smaller scale.
      Megatron was called out by Prime on at least one occasion for failing to uphold the Decepticon sense of honour, and he often called minions out for being dishonourable. It's an aspect of the G1 Megs I think I miss the most.

    The new version of this video is definitely more complete, and I'm glad to see that you're revisiting some older topics to update them.
    To this day I wonder why anybody thinks the Constructicon origins are a continuity error. Everything fits together quite naturally and, even if people missed the comment about them leaving Cybertron, we have plenty of stories in the US and Japanese canon of Transformers losing their bodies and being rebuilt into new Transformers later.
    I'm a little surprised you didn't mention G2's Dirtbag and Roadblock. Their gimmick placed them as Autorollers, but it was obvious from the paint scheme and vehicle modes they were meant to be official Constructicons. Back when the toys first came out, I simply took them to be two of the unnamed Constructicons from FFoD.

They're basically robot action figure + puzzle + vehicle/etc. toys all-in-1, with the complex transformation being the puzzle itself. It just fascinates me.

It's all thanks to your Retrospective/Transformers Discussion and Chris' TRANSFORMERS: The Basics that I've learned a lot about Transformers, and also toy reviewers like baltmatrix and Thew to know which figure to get, so thank you very much! Still reading the IDW comics, watching both G1 and Prime, will watch the Netflix Series soon but I wanna watch the entirely of G1 series, Headmaster, Super-God Masterforce and Victory first. I have watched Scramble City, the 1986 Movie, Zone, the first two Bayformers movies and the Prime Wars Trilogy web series (honestly I'll take the Prime Wars Trilogy over the Bayformers movies any day) before. Actually I got into Transformers and became a fan started pretty late with Transformers: DEVASTATION back in 2015, and started my not-so-big collection at the very near end of the Titans Return line with Triggerhappy, Misfire and Slugslinger I got for Christmas. And, the rest is history. Enjoyed SIEGE and loving Earthrise so far. But yeah, that's how things. Thank you for listening/reading and I'm sorry for going totally off-topic with what I think about the Constructicon origins and stuff. I'm still learning about Transformers overall so I can't say much about it, but I agree with your take on their origins. It does make more sense than what they gave us in the G1 series. Anyway thank you very much again and Till All Are One!

    So here’s a constructicon reference I noticed in ROTF. So imo the way megatron was resurrected by the constructicons seems similar to the origin that the g1 constructicons built megatron. And also it was 8 constructicons in g1 for that scene, and according to studio series, 8 constructicons form devastator

    I think I made a comment in the old version of this video that tried to piece things together here goes
    There is a breed of Transformers that are construction based in addition to Constructicons this includes several Autobots with construction Alt forms
    Moving onto Constucticons
    A faction of construction robots formed (distinctive by their uniformed green and purple coloring). At least 8 of these robots were responsible for creating a New type of Transformer Megatron
    Within that group of constructicons there is a smaller group of 6 constructicons (whether any of them were also one of the creators of Megatron is unknown) these 6 were friends with Omega Supreme but would later betray him after being altered by the Robosmasher. Omega Supreme went on Rampage and pursued them around Cybertron. Upon hearing their leader Megatron had left I. Pursuit of the Autobots they hastily built a ship and followed Omega Supreme pursued them attacking and damaging their ship but lost track of them. They too Crashed on earth and their bodies were damaged beyond repair. When Shockwave made contact with Megatron one of the updates Shockwave gave Megatron was that the Constructicon 6 had faithfully followed. Megatron was able to track them down and uncover their remains , while the bodies were damaged their Spark and memory cores remained so Megatron had new bodies built from Earth Materials.
    Meanwhile Omega Supreme Grudgingly joined the Autobots under Optimus Primes Command, knowing that his blood Vendetta with Devastor would never get sanctioned so long as it endangered the humans

    Your guess is as good as mine, Rodimus!!! Heavy Metal War & Secret of Omega Supreme give different account of the Constructicons' background, yet one thing is clear. They can build things and demolish them nearly as fast after completion. Though they had the advantage with the 7th component(Devastator), they could be outmatched by Omega Supreme and the Dinobots on separate occasions !!!There would be no doubt had the Dinobots been upgraded to Combiner status , would be a tough act to follow. It was sufficient enough in both Robot and Dinosaur form that the Dinobots could handle such pressure, though they preferred their dinosaur form as they were weaker in Robot form ( Desertion of the Dinobots Pt 1) Keep it rolling, bro, you are making history with your channel to explore everything Transformers- related and beyond!!! A way to tie is that Gravedigger and Hauler, the only Constructicons intact (they weren't present in the attack of Robosmasher) went separate ways, Hauler joining the Autobots (and later lost in space with the Ark), and Gravedigger trying to find a way to help his friends, while they are being chased by Omega Supreme. Finally, Omega reach the Constructicons and destroy them, but Gravedigger (to who Omega wasn't trying to kill) rescued the personality components of his former friends and keep them alive, but now he have a high resentment to Omega and the Autobots, so he heard that Megatron and his troops are alive in a near by planet (Earth) and join freely the Decepticons in exchange to have the opportunity to rebuild his friends. So, he help to "build" the new bodies of the Constructicons with Earth materials, and fled Earth with some mission for Megatron (perhabs locate Cybertron and help there to Shockwave, he don't have the ability to combine with his former partners anyway), appearing later on Earth again by the third season of the series. Omega Supreme, who was traveling somewhere without a mission now, eventually heard about the "resurrection" of his former friends and rush to go to Earth too.

    The Constructicons/Devastator were definitely much better than any of the Scramble City combiners (disliked the Aerialbot toys the most because when they got loose from play, Superion would always slouch if not fall over). Anyway, the few episodes where they drew Devastator with eyes instead of a visor was just... ughhh! 🤢 looked so wrong! - The summary of their origin presented is definitely plausible. Well done!

    In the toy form, I never understood in the manufacturing of the head, they always included the sepearate laser cannon, that protruded from the side of the head, even though the toon nor the comicbook never did show it.

    Hooray a new transformers discussion video. These are always interesting to watch because of the amount of research and thought that goes into them. That attempt to resolve all the conflicting origin stories of the constructicons is pretty good. G1 has so many inconsistencies and messy continuities that it's good when fans really try to figure out a way to make the messy parts a little tidier so we can do more than just shrug and say "eh that's G1 for ya"
    Honestly it's kinda sad to think that G1 could have been even more amazing if hasbro saw it more than just half hour toy commercials. Under ideal circumstances in line with modern sensibilities Hasbro, Takara, marvel and Toei would have planned not just the cartoon story a bit more holistically but done so on a more serialized format as has always been common with anime and the comics would have told stories from the same universe/continuity as the cartoon. I know some people prefer the stories in the comics because of Simon Furman's writing but it always annoyed me how fractured G1 is. Bob Budiansky and the guys at marvel really did a great job at building the lore of the autobots and decepticons, it was a good foundation that made a very simple concept quite engaging with some surprising depth for what was intended as advertainment. But hasbro really cheated the fans in so many ways, too many to list but the big one for me is the twenty year time skip between season 2 and 3. Are we to believe that nothing interesting happened during that time skip that they had to cut it out and fast forward to a radically different setting?
    I just find it a tragic irony that the franchise today has the longevity and scope to tell deeper stories than it had back then but this newer stuff just can't recapture the same magic that G1 had. Worse still the franchise owes a lot of its current popularity due to those horrible, god awful movies made by Michael bay that bear the name transformers. And because of that new series now have to incorporate tropes from those movies such as the "all spark" and bumblebee losing his ability to speak due to some plot contrivances (once I could live with but every freaking time??? That's too much, man)

    Actually the G1 Cartoon did do a good enough job to leave bread crumbs for the constricticons...
    After the Quintisons fled from Cybertron..
    The inhabitants seeking to make their own culture decided to organize a number of construction of construction teams...
    After the first war of Cybertron that lead to the development of Transformation technology... These teams choose to be upgraded to have an essortment of Construction vehicles..
    That would explain grapple, the scene at Megatron creation, Crystal city and etc...
    -Megatron creation is one team.
    -Crystal city is another team.. That explains why they had to be converted by the Robo Smasher..
    Then we come to the Megatron line and Omega Supreme Dialogue....
    Omega Supreme chased them and probably boarded the ship...
    Causing it to crash into the mountain where the Bodies where later found by Megatron. Then he rebuilt them..
    In similar fashion to that of the Combaticons parting out earth Construction vehicles to replace the damaged and destroyed bodies from Omega Supreme and the Crash landing...
    The Constructicon ship would also examine the cybertron technology used in heavy metal war...
    Also explains the Space Bridge technology seen in the series...
    Also this both covers and explains away the animation errors constructicons...
    Also ties up other loose ends...

    As I believe I noted on the origonal: Megatron's comment in Heavy Metal War, could, if you squint sideways at it mean "the trouble we took to build this base" not the "the trouble we took to build the Constructicons." The flashback stories are much harder to reconcile.
    Regarding Megatron's creation scene: was a Prime actually present to witness those events? Or was the scene fabricated based on available data for Rodimus' benefit? In which case the Decepticon engineers were given images of Decepticon engineers familiar to Rodimus.
