I love the protectobots and really think they need more love and more depiction in transformers media. They perfectly contrast there rivals the combaticons and they really represent the autobot faction with the whole goal of protecting innocent life. I've been hoping to see a video on them for a long time and Thank you Rodimus for turning my hope into a reality!
Glad I could oblige. It's very true, the Protectobots do match the Autobots goal of protecting life. I also think it's cool to have a team of jets too since the Autobots were made up of mostly cars.
@@RodimusPrimal I agree, i love how the special teams play very important particular roles within there faction. Wether it be construction, military force, air support so on and so forth. To tell you the truth i haven't really been able to grow an attachment to victorian and the torch bearers because they lack a particular role to play so it feels like they don't have anything that makes them stand out from the other special teams other then all being female but i digress
Same. Defensor is my favorite Autobot G1 Combiner so you can imagine how I felt when I learned that his first appearance was in what's considered to be THE worst episode of the entire original cartoon.
I just completed my Combiner Wars Defensor the other day. This video helped me understand who they are a lot better. Please do a Superion video too sometime, Thanks!
I like how the toy for G1 Streetwise was given a separate connector post instead of using his head like it was with all other Scramble City combiner team limb bots. The more show accurate head he was given looks cool. I also liked the alternate name of Hot Zone that was given to Hot Spot.
Sometimes, it is better for characters to be mysterious and not to know their backstory. Or perhaps I've already developed this kind of mindset due to plethora of TF characters that I struggled to keep up. Glad this channel was conceptualized. First Aid has become my favorite character come Season 3. Following the demise of resident mechanics/repair bots in Wheeljack and Ratchet, First Aid subtly or unassumingly took over the role more magnified with the presence of Metroplex. With him as inspiration, "First Aid" (mixed with various characters and numbers) becomes a personal user name in various online platforms.
I really love the Protectobots, probably my favorite Combiner in general. MTMTE especially helped me fall in love with First Aid as an individual character. I hope they return to prominence one day.
Strange that the first thing that came to my mind whenever I hear the word "First Responders" during this time of our quarantine were the Protectobots.
Such an underrated group I always wish season 2 went a little bit longer. Another great video! In still hoping you and Chris Mcfeely do a collab project on a big subject.
Next to Bruticus they are my fav combiners. Funny enough I sometimes forget the other teams and only recall the two rival teams. But yeah now was the best time to talk about these Front Line heroes. Also loved IDW's First Aid.
First of all I wishes your family and you a safe day from the recent situation of the cosmic rust. I’m glad to see that you made a new video my friend. I wish they will make more story to do more justice for Defensor. I think you are right that they are not giving Defensor enough story. Also, I like the idea of Omega Supreme discovered the protectobot on a different planet then bring them back to earth. I liked that idea much better.
I remember as a kid I had all the protectobots except blades... then they rereleased him as a classic but I was 15, and had enough cash for a pack of cigarettes (stupid) or blades. I didn’t choose blades. Still wish I could go back in time and slap myself
When you think about it, they have the worst luck when it comes to their media depictions. They first appear in the cartoon on the horribly awful B.O.T episode and their IDW appearances as a team only occurs in Combiner Wars and Lost Light which is a really bad place for these guys. Even their Marvel appearances don't do them any favours with their debut being in the US issue where Optimus Prime gets blown up after NPCs were killed in a computer game and considered the worst Marvel US issue of all time.
Nice never knew Hot Spot had a third mode. Even if they had a nice little run in Season 3, I still think they are one of the most underrated combiner groups.
I've watched so many Chris McFeely videos I just expect any G1 Transformer that appeared in the comic books to have murdered by a cosmically powered Starscream. Wait, the G1 cartoon had an episode where someone became a paraplegic? How the hell did an 80s cartoon get away with that?
The 80's cartoons dealt with a lot of serious issues. Go watch He-Man's "Problem with Power" where he believes he killed a man and gave up his sword. The Thundercats were depicted without clothes in their origin episode and I believe there was an issue where one of the Thundercats tried drugs. I KNOW there was a he-man episode where a child did drugs. But when the adult shows came on you were told to leave the room and porn was getting your hands on a swim suit issue or sneaking into your dad's magazine collection. Nowadays everyone tries to pretend that children's cartoons all have to be fluffy and nice and teach something, while every kid gets a cell phone at 12 with free access to porn and violence.
@@twistedgaming9185 In fairness, a lot of the cartoon changes came because of the government sticking their noses in it and deciding kids needed more educational content. It basically killed Saturday Morning Cartoons. It's ironic to me that 80's cartoons always get accused of being 30 minute commercials for the toys, but they somehow managed to include values, and compelling and well written stories more anything anyone is putting out today, with the average reboot getting shelved after a season or 2. Also, Filmation, famously had total creative control over He-Man and told Mattel on a number of occasions that they weren't putting certain toys in their cartoon. Retroblasting (see their RUclips channel) goes into this and says that Lou Schemer famously said he wasn't putting "A walking fart joke" into his cartoon when Mattel pressured him to introduce "Stinkor" to the television lineup.
In my comic headcanon, after the Aerialbots and Stunticons were created, both Optimus and Megatron sought more experienced robots for their next combiners, Megatron picked the Combaticons from Cybertron, Optimus imprinted five memories from a crystal onto bodies like he did with the '85 cars in issue 14.
I always liked these guys, and jumped at the chance to get their combiner wars toy even though I wasn't collecting too much at the time. Hot Spot's design is great, and I liked the theme of including a new member to most of the teams, Rook being a great one.
In the episode B.O.T they should have at least have the episode to themselves, and they should have been in more episodes they weren't advertised very well and the origin story of Omega finding them that could have been a good story for them
That's odd, we were just talking about that on the Tales From Teletraan podcast, lol. =P To answer your speculation, I've always assumed that the Protectobots were previously on Cybertron before the Ark launched. And they stayed behind to help Ultra Magnus fight an underground war against Shockwave. I wouldn't trust the Ask Vector Prime stuff. He's from the Unicron Trilogy so he wouldn't know better, haha. Now, as for the Combination origin, that's simply explained away from Optimus Prime asking for volunteers for a Combiner to go up against Starscream's Combaticons. The Protectobots did so, and with the information gained from the Aerialbots/Superion surprise against Menasor, were able to combine into Defensor. Simple and sweet. Anywho, great video, man. Keep up the good work. =P
Dope vid as always! At the end I caught a 49 minute ad, never seen that in my life but as a fellow youtuber I knew I found gold so I let the whole thing play out for ya! Cheers buddy!
It is probably a quirk of releasing around the same time but it is intresting the rescue based vechile protectobots are rivals of the miltary themed combaticons. Showing the two sides of the conflict the defensive autobot side and the more agressive offensive decpticon side.
Fits well. Helicopters (Blades and Vortex) Trucks (First Aid and Swindle) Defense vehicles (Hot Spot and Onslaught) Escape vehicles (Groove and Blastoff)
I'm going through G1 for the first time on Tubi (thanks for letting us know about that, Rodimus), and I watched the season 2 episodes that included the Protectobots recently. I can't wait to watch season 3!
@@RodimusPrimal Yes, of course! That's going to be this week's movie night for me. I've only ever seen the movie once as a kid back when Armada was still airing. It's going to be a real treat.
I remember me and my best friend saw Transformers with his mom. She did not know how to handle me after the prime death. It hit me harder because at the time my grandfather was in treatment for cancer and would die a few months later. So after the movie the plan was to go to Toys R Us but i only had $20. When we got in the store we both looked at the combiners and being a total space geek I saw Blast Off, His mom got him the protectobots and without batting an eye she got me Onslaught so i could have all the combaticons. Being that she was spending her money from working at a fast food job I did not know how much it meant. It was not till years later did I realize how much tin in work that cost her. I don't have many of my transformers but in a box I keep that and when I need a reminder of doing the right thing. I think of this.
A group of Autobots that are there straight up to protect humans explains a lot of why even casualties are low during a battle

I actually just bought the G1 gift set of these guys. Can't wait to get it.
The original from the 80s, or a repackage?
@@captainfantastic9158 it's a KO. Hard to find a good priced original one.
I wish the protectorbots will appearing in the movie
4:00 Peter Cullen - Optimus, Ironhide, Streerwise, Snapdragon; Dan Gilvesan - Bumblebee/Goldbug, Hot Spot; Frank Welker - Megatron, Soundwave, Mirage, Mixmaster, Trailbreaker, Blades, Groove; Michael Bell - Sideswipe, Prowl, Swoop, Scrapper, First Aid; Chris Latta - Starscream, Wheeljack, Defensor, Skullcruncher (anyone else voiced by these talented actors?)
Don't forget: Frank for Skywarp, Rumble and Frenzy; Michael for Bombshell and Brainstorm; Chris for Reflector and, if you're counting humans, Sparkplug Witwicky. (And I could be wrong, but I'd swear Frank "voiced" Ravage, Laserbeak and Buzzsaw as well!)
@@captainfantastic9158 thanks; according to tfwiki.net, Chris voiced Laserbeak; Frank was known for doing animal voices, so ur right about Ravage, Buzzsaw & Ratbat
@@SSRuiz Ha ha, I always loved that Frank voiced so much of the original Decepticon army single-handedly!
WAIT! We forgot the Dinobots! Frank did Sludge and Mike did Swoop!
And I guess Galvatron goes without saying...
@@captainfantastic9158 😆
@@captainfantastic9158 hell, Frank Welker could have done an episode by himself, though they might have needed Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
I really hope the protectobots appear in a transformers movie it's about time they need to be remembered
I love the protectobots and really think they need more love and more depiction in transformers media. They perfectly contrast there rivals the combaticons and they really represent the autobot faction with the whole goal of protecting innocent life. Sadly they don't get as much attention as the arielbots which i think is a shame cause i see a lot of potential in them.
I like how you made this video during the virus, very clever.
I wish the protectbots was real so they can help us with this epidemic going are.great video review keep up the good work rodimus
I just completed my Combiner Wars Defensor the other day. This video helped me understand who they are a lot better. Please do a Superion video too sometime, Thanks!
I got all of them for my Birthday back in 1986... good times.
Whoah, the Protectobots! My favorite Scene is in "The Revenge of Bruticus", where First Aid resues an unconcious Human, great!!!
I like how the toy for G1 Streetwise was given a separate connector post instead of using his head like it was with all other Scramble City combiner team limb bots. The more show accurate head he was given looks cool. I also liked the alternate name of Hot Zone that was given to Hot Spot.
I totally forgot about this one! 😅 the Protectobots are truly unique among the Autobots and they should gain more attention
They definitely deserve more screentime
They definitely should be included in more videos. I love all the G1 combiners. Please do videos on any you haven't done yet.
Yes we need more of the Protectobots!
I really love the Protectobots, probably my favorite Combiner in general. MTMTE especially helped me fall in love with First Aid as an individual character. I hope they return to prominence one day.
Finally, someone willing to do the protectobots retrospective, can do the aerial bots retrospective
I fully intend to cover the various teams. I did two huge videos on combiners in general though.
Another great show! Thank you for all the details you pack into these origins and history of these Transformers.
Thank you! Hopefully it won't take too long to make the next two!
Strange that the first thing that came to my mind whenever I hear the word "First Responders" during this time of our quarantine were the Protectobots.
Defensor is one of my favourite combiners in transformers
Such an underrated group I always wish season 2 went a little bit longer. Another great video! In still hoping you and Chris Mcfeely do a collab project on a big subject.
He was always my favorite combiner
the Protectobots are deffinetly underrated. they are an intresting team and should be included in more storys.
The protectobots could have a more military alt-mode while then rescuebots could have a more civilian alt-mode.
I remember as a kid I had all the protectobots except blades... then they rereleased him as a classic but I was 15, and had enough cash for a pack of cigarettes (stupid) or blades. I didn’t choose blades. Still wish I could go back in time and slap myself
Cigarettes will kill you but not protectobot blades.
The Protectobots are the only Transformers I ever owned, Now I'm a First Responder.
I wish the protectobots were real and help us. At least they were awesome in the G1 cartoon.
Cool I really love the protectobots 😁😁😁😍😍
Nice never knew Hot Spot had a third mode. Even if they had a nice little run in Season 3, I still think they are one of the most underrated combiner groups.
Finally some show light on Defensor/Protectobots
I've watched so many Chris McFeely videos I just expect any G1 Transformer that appeared in the comic books to have murdered by a cosmically powered Starscream.
Wait, the G1 cartoon had an episode where someone became a paraplegic? How the hell did an 80s cartoon get away with that?
They got away with it by bringing back Optimus Prime!
@@RodimusPrimal And playing The Touch uncensored for broadcast!
@@Theopheus It's the birth of hypocrisy.
Great segment. The protectobots always seemed to be the forgotten combiner or the least desirable. Keep bringing the awesome content!
I hope they’ll get more screen time in the future.
Oh yeah. It’s weird how so many other obscure characters or groups have gotten a revival in some way, but not these guys.
At least they got new toys.
I am a first responder as firefighter like the protectobots
always ready to help in need
the protectobots would be perfect for earthrise
They've already gotten toys in Combiner Wars.
This is such an amazing series that you do. You really give such great justice to all these wonderful characters
Brilliant series!
Protectobots dont get enough appreciation.
I always liked these guys, and jumped at the chance to get their combiner wars toy even though I wasn't collecting too much at the time. Hot Spot's design is great, and I liked the theme of including a new member to most of the teams, Rook being a great one.
Great video as always Rodimus! This makes me want to bring out my combiner wars figures and form Defensor!
The Protectobots should easily have been featured in more of the G1 cartoons.
wish they got an origin story and how they got end up on earth and how the they joined the Autobots
In the episode B.O.T they should have at least have the episode to themselves, and they should have been in more episodes they weren't advertised very well and the origin story of Omega finding them that could have been a good story for them
1 of my fave autobot combiner teams besides the aerialbots
I love these guys. I'm trying to collect all the versions of Groove that I can.
My favorite team
6:07-6:23
Is it just me or did it appear that defensor knew he wasn't complete but still risk his life to do his job
That's exactly what it is. He's dedicated at protecting life.
Dope vid as always! At the end I caught a 49 minute ad, never seen that in my life but as a fellow youtuber I knew I found gold so I let the whole thing play out for ya! Cheers buddy!
A very timely and appropriate video during this crisis. Thanks for the upload.
It is probably a quirk of releasing around the same time but it is intresting the rescue based vechile protectobots are rivals of the miltary themed combaticons. Showing the two sides of the conflict the defensive autobot side and the more agressive offensive decpticon side.
Fits well.
Helicopters (Blades and Vortex)
Trucks (First Aid and Swindle)
Defense vehicles (Hot Spot and Onslaught)
Escape vehicles (Groove and Blastoff)
I'm going through G1 for the first time on Tubi (thanks for letting us know about that, Rodimus), and I watched the season 2 episodes that included the Protectobots recently. I can't wait to watch season 3!
Be sure to watch Transformers the Movie before you start Season 3.
@@RodimusPrimal Yes, of course! That's going to be this week's movie night for me. I've only ever seen the movie once as a kid back when Armada was still airing. It's going to be a real treat.
Great video as always Sir Merry Christmas to you and your family
I miss these guys
