In this documentary, we will explore the abandoned mansion of the Gasper family, a Portuguese family that has been around for more than 200 years. In the early days, they were a very poor family until they discovered their talent for making Wine and Porto. They became famous all over the country and started to build massive wealth, with this newly created wealth they build an enormous mansion for the family in 1932. They all lived here until 2008 when only the mother of the family was left, but then the worst that could happen happened. In July 2008 a storm hit the mansion and made it unlivable, without a roof above her head the woman decided to spend the last years of her life in the local monastery serving as a nun. She visited the mansion regularly in the years after its destruction...

Once again excellent job! In the US we used to knit those small doilies even had kits as a kid but we use them for pot holders like an oven mitt for holding on to hot pots as a child I made so many of them and gave them to all my relatives LOL but I could see putting it over a jug to keep contaminants from falling in especially if you lived on a farm just dust and debris to keep out of your water and drinks amazing how we use things for different purposes in different cultures you do an excellent job God bless all your efforts! I would just like to say that it may sound romantic, but there is only one person who rose to heaven that was Jesus, for the rest of us it is very different. And another thing there are no homeless nuns as they live in communities in convents. If this was her home she would need to renounce their property and live in poverty, as they take a vow.
The saddest part of this, is that, “the kids all move away”. They left and never helped their Mom. My older Daughter is gone a lot and it’s hard. What a beautiful home going to ruin, just probably as that Mother’s heart when her kids never came back to visit. It would be a shame if the ceiling fell in on those beautiful chandeliers! They’re only possessions, God has our true home in heaven though.
At the end of the video I cried a little, I think all our grandparents or the people before us struggled or lived this way. A time forgotten loved ones that have passed that you still miss.
I have often imaged a home like this with a court yard with my family living with me with their child, how I have a better idea of how it would be laid out, now I can image more of the plan. Nice to dream.

what I do not understand is why the remaining family does not come to reclaim the remining items. If I knew my great grandparents place was still there with things in it I would go get it. It is so sad to see all the personal belongings still there just rotting away. Some of the cookware is very expensive.. sad, so sad!!

I would be so sad if the things that meant something to me were left to rot and decay. I hope all my friends and family would come through and take pieces of my life and happy "artifacts" away with them. I hope that young families just starting out or college students would take my furniture.

Yes I was wondering that myself such a huge house they probably provided for a lot of the family members so why was there no help at the end and she went to the church in the end. Was there a family member at the church? Yes you should always look out for older family members especially your own parents for goodness sake. May she rest in peace. I adore your explores and how respectfully you document the story. It also makes me sad to see what becomes a family's legacy. At 56 I now realise the things I hold dear to me may be a burden to my children. I have started clearing out things that are sentimental to me, but maybe not to them. I'll donate it to people that may find them of benefit rather than have them be thrown out like trash or rot. Everything and everyone has their time. We all return home to the creator. At 15:00 the "Portuguese Coffeemaker" is of Italian origin known as a moka pot or espresso maker. Great job, keep it up. It may appear easy but it's really challenging, takes a lot of hard work to explore and film and edit. Thank you for inviting us along.
Bhavya I have an Italian little espresso pot. My (modern) coffee maker broke & I remebered I had this one. I make coffee with it sometimes twice a day & LOVE it. It just feels so much more "real" & special using this ❤
Our town had an F5 tornado. Afterward people could not go back into their homes to salvage clothes or personal items because of bacteria and mold. The lady probably could not salvage her items safely so had to leave them. 😢
I found myself wondering what events caused such ruin to the mansion. My thought is it was an earthquake that caused all that damage. Even the damage was beautiful in it's own way. I loved the surprise that I'm sure we all felt when you discovered the 2nd part of the house. Thank you for a great explore!
Hi Lesley! Loving this explore. That chandelier in the chapel is magnificent! The sad part is that it's hanging from a ceiling that is deteriorating. Eventually, the chandelier will fall and shatter. It's such a beautiful chandelier.

18:06 This stove is quite a find! The company that manufactured it was Smith/Wellstood Colombian. The front of the stove is Morning Star No. 1. This parlour stove dates back to the early to mid 1800's.

When I leave this earth, people will have a ball going through my herbs, crystals and grimoires. I have hundreds of books of different topics. Fiction, biographies, history...I love to read everything I get my hands on. I hate to think of my things being left to decay. This video was great and it made me sad to see all the fine relics going to waste and decay.
I always tell my hubby if die before he does get rid of um the personal stuff.
Sounds like we s one good reading at your place. I used to want to live in a cabin in the woods. Not anymore. My daughters husbands family lives deep in the woods. Its to quiet and lonely. I like hearing people. Its nice while your there but I could not stand the isolation. Your place sounds great.

Trust, communication, loving, honoring, God-fearing, understanding, patience and respecting your partner. So crucial to provide balance. Although I cannot read Portugese, the certificate on the wall 35:30 is probably a Confirmation Certificate. At 36:10 is a picture of the children on their Confirmation Day, going by the white clothes the girls are wearing. I am wondering if the original part of the house was already decaying and only the newer portion that you found was used. Then it was not safe to even be in the newer portion because moving around the original courtyard house was falling into disrepair and the storm made it comletely unlivable for and older person on her own.
I can imagine living in that home with the childrens laughter coming up from the court yard.

I believe that you are on target regarding that framed certificate. I was wondering what it could be. Sometimes, devout individuals do receive special "Papal Proclaimations" (probably not what it's called tho!), but those framed documents are usually much larger.
At 35:30, it is actually an enrollment certificate for "The Daughters of the Union of Mary", which is probably similar to or the same as the Catholic apostolate called "The Legion of Mary" in English-speaking countries, a society that I believe is still active even today.

Beautiful explore! Miranda must have been terrified when that massive storm tore down her house around her. I always feel very nostalgic and relate to the people who lived inside the places you explore. You do a great job of setting the atmosphere of the residents. Glad she spent her last days in a calm, safe, and spiritual environment. There is no place like home, but I believe she found comfort there. Her personal chapel was gorgeous!! The chandelier was breathtaking. She must have had an amazing faith. God bless her soul. ❤️
You asked why she didn't take her things with her to the monastery. I thought when you entered a monastery you had to give up all of your worldly possessions. That might explain it, unless I'm wrong about that.
It’s true, they take very minimal items with them but those items are given in for safe keeping (only a few small personal items allowed tho)
Plus there would be no need for any furniture or other items. Anything valuable like jewelry and cash would be given to the church. The three vows are poverty, obedience and chastity.

Oh yeah this video made me cry my eyes out. I thought of the nuns I grew up with. Went to Catholic school until 5th grade. You bring the families to life. You bring them life again in a way. Keep up the great videos.
This place must have been exquisite when it was newly built, and so classically Portuguese in style. The bird cages look like dovecotes or pigeon lofts in their size and design. Great wine cellar...sealed port, and many red wines remain drinkable for a hundred years are more as long as the bottles are still securely corked. The scissor things near the oven are called fire tongs. The tall stand beside the nightstand is for an oil lamp or was used as a fern stand. She likely didn’t take much with her to the monastery because the cells for monks and guests are quite small, and all furnished the same. The covers for glasses or jam jars keep flies and wasps out of your drinks. The hallway with a wall of window is a conservatory where many plants were grown, and people could get Sun in Winter. The set of pictures of Christ on a journey is called “The Stations of the Cross, and they tell the story of his death and resurrection. If Miranda was anything like my mother she probably refused to move to wherever her children now lived. I was fortunate in having a husband who was supportive of me living with my mother In Norway for nearly 10 yrs even though I came back to the US as often as I could. My mother finally agreed to move to my home on our farm in Colorado 3 yrs before she died at 112 in 2018.
Yes, just like my father who continued to live alone in our Texas home until age 92, following our mother's death 15 years earlier. We tried everything to get him to move near one of the 3 of us siblings living in other states. Eventually, he was forced to move near my younger sister in Oklahoma! Since his maternal Grandmother lived to be 120 yrs in East Texas, we were sure he would live to be at least 100 yrs old! Unfortunately due to the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic (he was a "people person") he checked out at 94 yrs old, peacefully & painlessly.
This place made me cry!!! Such a truly sad story of Mrs. Gasper😞 Of all of her children, none of them would come back & help her fix up the place or take some of the priceless furniture or momentos in this fabulous property, or care for her themselves?!? Sooo many things that should be saved!!! The wooden furniture was gorgeous! The stained glass windows were epic, the chandelier in the chapel was breathtaking! Sooo many memorable items that should be saved!!! What a gorgeous property, when it was in it’s hay day! I loved that she made doilies!!! I still have some from my grandmother & use & cherish them to this day🙏 I loved the large medal candlesticks! Such a waste of such timeless, epic items, made me get a tear in my eye & wish that I could save them!!! Thank you Leslie & Danny for sharing this wonderful property with us!!! I loved it ❤️

It's so sad to learn that the parents afforded their kids such an abundant life and none of them took the mother in when the house was ravaged.
Perhaps she didn't want to leave the area where she had lived all her life.
It was so sweet the way you told the tale of the family and ended with the description of how the girl's religion was taken to another level in the monastery where she lived out her life before going to heaven. God bless you guys.
Side note: From my view, this appears to be one of the ricketiest houses you guys have ever explored and I was having little heart attacks that you would fall through those floors. I'm so glad you made it around safely.

It stand for an honest comprehension of hard working people and the sacrifices they've been through so they could provide a better life for themselves and their children. In love with this beatiful heritage... very moving. Thank you for your passion and the way you've respectfully treated all the artifacts and the memory of all the people involved. Really sad to hear of what happened to Miranda yet so happy to know she entered into nunnery the rest of her life. Her family probably were devouted Christian Catholics with the presence of that huge rosary beads near their altar in the family chapel. Really very interesting of how you narrated the story of Miranda's family. More of your explorations Leslie & Danny. You really are a very very professional vloggers together. It looks like a boarding house for seniors. So sad to see those antiques falling through the floors.
This house was inherited . There is no way built in the early 1900's. They must of moved in it then. This is a much older place as you can tell of the big bricks that is in the walls. Ive been studying this for a while now.

I think you're right about the house was built before the time they say 1930.
But what do you think at 10:45 ? the ion work on the balcony look likes 1931 with something that looks like alphabet letters and he says that's the date of the house was built and G A is family name Gasper.
So cool that you found that part of the house that still has so much life left! I was in shock seeing how nice it was. With so much damage done to the majority of the place. Great job guys!!

Wooowww that's amazibg video the mansion is in very advanced decay status. I LIKE MOST THE Chandelier by the altar and the very big Holy Rosary by the Altar too. The huge barrels are awesome they produced thier own wines. Very well the shoe rack is nice with the shoes in it. I know that only Portuguese port wine made in portugal can be named "Porto." Information I happened to learn in college but I thought I'd never use. There have been a couple of other storms in Portugal, one I read about was in 2018, that might have also contributed to the deterioation of this home. There seems so much rotted wood from water damage, almost too much from just one storm. I read the 2008 storm had 138 MPH winds. The crochet squares are also used to make vests and throw blankets. It is a way to use up last bits of yarn making each square with different colors of small amounts you have then attaching them into a useful item. It is sad to think that one day soon the beautiful chapel chandelier will fall to the ground and be in 1,000+ pieces.It would be interesting to know more of this family and see photos of how it looked in it's prime. A great video!!!
Happy Easter Everyone! The first knitted item was we call a "Granny square" it is usually the start of a full blanket or a coaster to put under our drinks. The other is the doily the others mentioned.. Blessings for the lady below may she get the help she needs...

Lesley this is one of the best homes you have ever shown. I absolutely love the feel of this place. The chapel and the additional areas you found at the end. I felt at home in her kitchen area with that beautiful corner cabinet and the beautiful dishes and pots loved. Okay tell Danny there is at least one lady in the USA that has those doilies and crochet little things as well as my older mother who put them under pretty things but also use to cover pitchers and pots so nothing like dust dirt get in. Also to set hot items on or carry. Stunning stained glass on windows and the exquisite tiles. All great. You could really feel the lady's spirit everywhere. Especially at the end and the court yard. Awesome job. You guys were so enjoyable to watch. Stay Safe. Maybe the church could go and recover some of those religious items. So nice. I mean they did help her at the end. Give them to the church or a poor family for their homes. Peace for you guys. As always Lesley you took us on a fairytale journey. Love you. Could listen to you forever. Another absolutely beautiful abandoned mansion! What a surprise to have the very best bits at the end! Its also sad though, to know so many beautiful things are going to decay away and not be available to others who would love and care for them for years to come!

The crochet stuff on the tables and cabinets are called doyles. My grandmother made a lot of them. The one girl was right those sizzors were to put pots into the coals, or move the pot away from got spot. Thank you

Fabulous! I loved the bird cages in the corridors. What a lovely idea...built in bird cages. 🥰 Also loved the incredibly beautiful windows and the way they lined the courtyard. So open and bright! You can almost hear children running and laughing down the long corridors, playing in the colorful light patterns from the stained glass. Thank you for another fantastic exploration!!!
