I truly wanted to thank you for all this very valuable information. Thank you for taking the time to film and share. I actually built a fire place mantel this past weekend following and using your video as guidance .It was a lot of fun and I learned a few tricks. Cutting the crown molding was challenging for me very tricky but I was able to get it done and I am very happy with the result. Once I saw your video I knew I could do it. I tiled the fireplace about 2 years ago and I could not find the right information to build a mantel until I found your video. Thanks again, all the best luck with your business.

Your videos are really good! You're very clear with your explanations and I feel like you are genuinely honest and not trying to sell bs to viewers or show off sponsorships like so many other people do on youtube. I've been watching this video over again as I build a mantel for one of my clients who also has a tile surround and its been very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Simple projects like this, if I could, I'd do nothing else. No rush, take your time and play around with different add ons and whatever your mind sees. Because like you said, sometimes it's the job that moves you up the ladder. Simple, clean, tight, works with the room, perfect size and becomes a focal point that blends in. I did something similar a few years back and just for the hell of it, I made a small dentil moulding with 3/4" cutouts between 1" teeth mounted just under the crown. So I'm sure you were loving this job letting your mind run. Nice, clean has always been there type of project. It's also nice to work with professionals as well, your guy is no joke when it comes to getting things done properly. 👌

I love what you did on this mantle. My husband passed away about two years ago now. But I still feel like it was just yesterday. I have been designing my mantle piece that I am wanting to make and I know I'm gonna need help and I am looking for someone that's not go to $3000.00 to death!! People know that you've lost your spouse they think you're rolling in money. The metal that I'm designing it's going to be connected to brick my whole fireplace is brick. I think you so much for posting this because now I know what kind of anchors, Or column screws that I'm gonna have to use. I learned a lot by watching your video and I have learned I am going to have to get help. There's no way I can hold that and drill and screw by myself.
    Thank You,👍👍

I like the pro classic. Acrylic alkyd is my favorite. And for a primer I would use a stain blocking latex. Oil yellows over time and cracks with age. Sherwins seals and bonds or zinsser 123 will do the trick. Those will block tannin as well. I think the shellac isn’t necessary for this type of application. At any rate, project turned out great. Keep up the good work.

It would great if you could show how you approach base shoe molding. Do you pre paint and then install after everything else is painted, or paint everything at once? In Iowa most builders add shoe molding after floors are in. Would be nice to see how a remodel project approaches it.

I want to start by saying it looks great. One thing I noticed is that when you put the top ledger on the rings were curved to the room, meaning as that board drys it may cup towards the room. There won't be any resistance to that cupping because the lag screws are dead center. Just a thought...

You have a very informative channel. With that said I am a retired finish carpenter with over thirty years experience. With mere 7 years maybe you haven't seen as much as you will assuming you'll stick with it. One element of this work that you spend little if any time with is less than adequate jobsite conditions. There a many conditions that can be found and must be addressed. Wavy walls, not plumb, not parallel, thick inconsistent texturing, walls not square, I could go on. There's also many solutions to problems but usually only one that's best and recommended. There's also reasons to set a door out of plumb, hopefully by not much. As in the case of two perpendicular interior doors where framing is maybe not ideal. The priority here might be to set the doors so that the reveals between the finished casing legs are consistent, even though the doors may be out of plumb somewhat. Maybe even cheating the reveals between the casing and jamb legs to "fool" the eye into seeing all is ok. When doors are close it is paramount that header casings line up and casing legs are parallel and close to plumb. This is real world carpentry when all is not perfect, and part of what makes an experience carpenter so valuable, especially in a time when trades that precede us are perfect not payed to be. What's that saying, "you can't see it from my house". Or, the next trade can deal with it. We're the next to last trade on a site, and every trades shortcomings may end up being our problems. Sure, one can always call the GC and have so and so fix their work, but no GC wants to hear that all the time. They want to know that you fixed it and took the headache away from him. That's just one way to earn future work.
