My favourite platforming game from the PS2 would be Sly 2. It has gameplay variety with 3 playable characters, a plot that can get quite dark and emotional at times whilst still featuring moments of levity throughout and multiple hub locations that keep things fresh. Sly 3 is similar in offerings but it wasn't as spectacular a leap from 2 to 3 as it was from1 to 2.
Qotd: 1st party, Sly and Ratchet; can’t decide which one is better! 3rd party, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy by EuroCom Entertainment, and the first 3 Tak games by Avalanche Software! What’s your opinion on ALL them?
ALL of them? Let's see here. I really liked the first Jak & Daxter game, but was a little disillusioned with the direction the series took after that (though, I did enjoy the Daxter spin-off on PSP). Sly 2 is the best of the three installments made by Sucker Punch, though 1 and 3 are both worth playing. My favorite of the bunch is probably the Ratchet & Clank series, as I always enjoyed the blend of platforming and gunplay. I also really dig the futuristic level designs and and the wacky weapons. Plus, I think the series is still at the top of its game. I loved both the PS4 and the PS5 installments, and look forward to whatever comes next in the series. That said, I would love to see a revival of either Jak or Sly ... or Jumping Flash. Can we just get a new Jumping Flash game??
@ I too would LOVE to see Both Jak and Sly return in the future! Especially Sly after Thieves In Time’s infamous (no pun intended, though it is still very funny!) cliffhanger ending! P. S. I did NOT see you liking Jumping Flash! Just played it for the first time last week; and either I’m getting less coordinated than I was, or I just REALLY suck at it! But, I still like it!
@@DefunctGamesI never played the original game. I started with 2 after playing GTA back in the 2000s. Jak X was my favorite out of the series. I'll look forward to a vid on the rest of the Jak games later 🙂
Random question to ya Defunct, Looks like a new game based on the Terminator IP was just rated in Australia for all cosnoles and PC, "Terminator 2D: NO FATE" Any thoughts on what it could be? I'd like to think and Hope it would be a neat beat em up!
I saw that announcement. I had to refresh my memory on who Reef Entertainment is, and they're the team that made the the 2023 game Terminator: Resistance, which was poorly received when it was released last year. I guess that since it's called Terminator 2D it won't be a first-person shooter, which does give me a little hope. I could see it being a beat 'em up, but it probably makes sense for it to be a run 'n gun shooter. Perhaps something along the lines of RoboCop vs. the Terminator on the Genesis. It could be fun to play a run 'n gun shooter as the Terminator, but it's more likely that we'll play John Connor or some other resistance fighter.
@@DefunctGamesoh snap i didn't even think of a run and gun, I read 2D, thought of the recent boom of new beat em ups and that was what came to my mind, could totally see it being a 2D run and gun metal slug style now that you mentioned that tho
Sly 2 is my favorite of all the PS2 platformers so far, followed by Ratchet 3 and Jak 1. I kind of agree with most critics that Sly 3 is kind of a letdown compared to 2. It has the Crash 3/Spyro 3 syndrome. Having too many playable characters and mini-games meant you barely even got to play as Sly anymore.
I normally do not watch the Playstation vids, because I don't own a PS5. But seeing these mascots again really brings a tear to my eye. These platformers were the reasons I wanted a PS2 in the first place, but as Sony moved further and further away from them I moved away from Sony. I'm hoping Astro Bot is the sign of more things to come on the platformer front again from them. And god, seeing those Jak 1 reviews piss me off again. The stupid takes from EGM especially about the games being only for kids. *Sigh* It was the time.
It was an interesting reminder to see the contemporary view of these games, both in the cases of Jak and Daxter having the grade-lowering "kiddy" accusations, and also the perspective of Sly 2 being lesser due to the change from more "level-based" structure to a more "open hub". Thinking back there WAS a lot more busy-work and what one might call 'padding' in that game, but at the time I didn't care because it was just so much fun to have more stuff to do in that world. Sneaking around to pick-pocket, hack and brawl around various towns was just up my alley, so I didn't even consider how they could be negatives, when my biggest complaint was how it felt like the end-boss didn't feel like a satisfying end to the story due to coming so abruptly, didn't feel like they properly built up to it. Really wish more of these games could've stayed relevant through the ages, now only Ratchet remains... As for my favourite... I'll have to go with Sly 3. Lots to do, fun call-backs and a cool finale that I was satisfied to leave as the book-ending of the series makes it the top in my eyes. Strange thing is that I played the Ratchet series first and you'd think I'd be a bigger fan, but fun as they were I don't really remember them as "platformers" so much as "run and gun" games. Even if they had a lot of jumping, those puzzles aren't what I first and foremost associate with the franchise.
This was also an era when padding was expected, especially now that developers had near limitless space to fill up. In some ways Grand Theft Auto III probably set the bar too high for most other studios, because that's a game full of bonus content and padding. It worked for something like GTA, but maybe not every platformer or role-playing game. But people perceived a 30 - 50 hour game as getting their money's worth, so the idea of "just" being a solid 8 hour game wasn't enough. I'm thankful that we have largely moved away from that mentality. I would rather there be a tightly paced 5 - 8 hour game with no filler than a 20+ hour epic full of content that doesn't need to be there.
I don't think I've played any of the Sly games, but I do remember playing Jax and Daxter on dad's old PS2 when I was a little girl. Looking at the ROMs loaded into my PS2 Emulator, and looks like I've got all of these, so can try out the Sly games, they do look interesting. As for the question, I thought this was PS1, but according to Google Spyro was a PS2 game, so guess I'm going to say that one. I did enjoy that purple dragon after all.

I always come back to sly 2 every now and then, such a good game

I’m playing through Sly 2 again and it holds up soooo well

Aaah 3D glasses. That was an exciting fad that should have lasted longer.
QOTD, favorite PS2 platformer is Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil.
Niel Druckman was not at Naughty dog during Jak 1
He came during Jak 3
A fair enough correction. When I quickly looked up his years with the company, I thought it said 2001, but I see that it was 2004.
I also came during Jack 3. Amazing game.
Technically Jak and Daxter was already playable but a better version is now available.

I've never played a sly cooper game or Jax and daxter but I know they're beloved

sly series worth playing
Spyro was a PS1 game, all 3 of the original games came out on the platform.
Sly 1 is kinda “meh” BUT don’t let that deter you from eventually playing Sly 2 which is a massive leap forward
My favorite ps2 platformer, does it have to be sony exclusive? Sly cooper, if not uh hmm does Tomb Raider legend count?
I’ve never actually played any of these games, surprisingly.
I've never played these games. We were a Nintendo household. lol
Edge was out of their damn minds with sly cooper
I hope the Ratchet and Clank Trilogy come soon.
Does anyone else has their copy of Jak and Daxter ps5 completely bugged beyond repair?
Mine won't pop up trophies 🥲
