"First, they praised Bethesda's entry into the series as a fantastic Fallout game, with an impressive sandbox one could finally explore through the eyes of their character. However, over time, this thesis was challenged, especially after the introduction of New Vegas. An antithesis formed, in which it was torn down as not even being a true Fallout game due to its poor writing, lack of meaningful choices or depth, and cookie cutter "factions" and companions. However, when haku's analysis released synthesis was finally achieved between the two for an accurate view of what Fallout 3 truly is: "It's a fun game but kind of retarded." new to fallout so played fallout 3, now moving onto NV and im excited. Fallput 3 was a banger and as a person who plays multiplayer games and has never played a solo story game, shit was good.
It really does have the best atmosphere of all the 3D games and that's why it's the one I always replay. That sense of loneliness and isolation is incredible. And that's probably one of the reasons I dislike the settlement/building mechanisms in 4. Its a natural progression from a game standpoint, can't disagree with it. But I love wandering alone and feeling disconnected from everything. Also, hard disagree on Three Dog. Love him.
I'm playing through fallout 3 on a heavily modded Tale of Two Wastelands. Totally different and better experience. I am using an economy mod that actually has me needing caps regularly.
@@AndrewJ9673 The main issue I had with it really is that it's never your character's story; you never really have any agency in the plot; the entire story is you getting told what to do and just doing it. There are some examples of bad writing that are cited often, but the lack of stakes made it feel really uninteresting. Cancel Reply
@@Zazymandias I can understand that criticism but tbh the only Fallout game where that isnt the case is Fallout NV (and probably FO4 too). Fallout 1 and 2 both do the same thing. Its cool that NV gives you a bunch of factions to choose from and you're the tipping point between them all but NV's main quest also feels probably the most disjointed for me out of any of the Fallout games. For me when I compare Fallout 3 to 2, 1, and 4, I always enjoy the story. Its a bit weird running into your Dad and he barely reacts to what you've done in the wasteland, but the depiction of the Brotherhood is fresh and I've always enjoyed the way the Enclave make their reappearance. Thats just my 2 cents.
@@AndrewJ9673 Thank you for your reply! I appreciate your perspective. I still enjoy it more than Fallout 4 strangely enough, and in Fallout 4 you do get the faction choices, but that's another can of worms lol
@@Zazymandias I love FO4 but it sucks that skills are absent from it + Starfield. I understand why they’re gone but I feel like its an overadjustment from what they had in Skyrim.
Every fallout game has it's fans and for all different reasons. Hell i have a group of friends that even play 76 because and only because its fallout with friends. There is no perfect fallout game
The exploring and looting is top tier in the series. Fallout fans have a lot in common with Resident Evil fans. Both series had a long hiatus in their lifespans and changed dramatically but each game has something to enjoy about it and has its fans. I think we are all just looking for that PERFECT mix of story choices and exploring.
For it's time? Yeah. After more games came out (and even NV came out) it made it look pretty bland. There's not even a lot of weapons in the game, they didn't even bother making unique weapons *look* unique, only thing that changes is the name. The DLC's are incredibly boring, there's nothing unique about them. I enjoyed F3 when I was 15, but the writing just has too many holes and nonsense for me to ignore. Hell I might just replay it to refreshen my perspective on it these days. The perfect mix is to either play the classic titles or play New Vegas. Because 4 and 76 don't offer that feel anymore, they are completely detached from the core Fallout experience.
So, your TLDR is “much grimdark atmosphere?” Fallout 1 and 2 instantly have better atmospheres on top of everything else. So yes, Fallout 3 fucking sucks.
I agree Fallout 1 has a great atmosphere, the best in the series IMO. 2 however I'd argue kinda ruins its own atmosphere and especially immersion with the constant pop culture references and all the hit or miss humour. I'm just not a fan of that stuff, it pulled me out of the world constantly. Mike Tyson even bites your ear off at one point. That said, I was talking specifically about the 3D games. I even put them on screen. It's an aspect of Fallout 3 a lot of people overlook that Bethesda honestly did a great job with. Atmosphere is very important to a lot of people. Doesn't make the game's weaknesses much better, but it's not like I pulled punches on that stuff. Credit where credit is due. (Sorry for the long reply)
@@haku_haku_haku Bethesda didn't do a great job at all. The game is set 200 years after the war but that doesn't match up with what we see. Washington DC would be submerged by that point. The supermarkets wouldn't be full of food that would have been completely scavenged in the first year after the bombs dropped. There wouldn't be so much garbage everywhere for literally no reason. There'd be more thought and care put into explaining how people live and survive in the wasteland in these hubs like Megaton. This stuff is definitely far more immersion-breaking than the occasional pop culture reference. At least Fallout 2 still retains much of the atmosphere of the first game and is grounded in some sort of reality. Fallout 3 just provides a window dressing excuse to have a "muh grimdark" atmosphere. I'm pretty sure Bethesda chose not to go with the OG Fallout soundtrack composer which says it all really.
@@Venkt-g3c Sure a lot of that is true, but when you're in some horrible underground abandoned place you're not thinking 'Man I'd really be enjoying this if those supermarket shelves I saw an hour ago weren't stocked'. You're just immersed in this experience of being underground in some horrible place. That's way different from every damn location having a fourth wall break or star wars reference that probably wasn't even funny at the time the game came out. I only mentioned it because while I agree Fallout 2's atmosphere can be pretty good at times, it's got nothing on Fallout 1 IMO. It was a side note.
@@haku_haku_haku As long as you're admitting that you think Fallout 3's atmosphere is great - for the reason that Bethesda made a world that doesn't make any sense just as an excuse to have a muh grimdark atmosphere. The DLC was great for Fallout 3. Arguably as good as New Vegas. Mothership Zeta is the only one thats not good. The Pitt and Anchorage are good. Point lookout is probably the best fallout dlc ever.

Playing without 3-Dog? Couldn't be me
Doesn’t like 3 dog, uses a sledgehammer as a main weapon.
To put it simply, incorrect.
Nah I used Jingwei's shocksword mostly, one of the 3 (three) melee weapons that can actually do damage.
I agree with the ambient music being amazing. Some great hidden tracks in there.
