Competition is important. Now such competition no longer exists, Rockstar knows for sure that they can just sit on their asses all day while letting the GTA online money flow in.
Without competition, Rockstar can let their games slowly simmer and cook without being disturbed resulting in a better product than when they had competition. Why'd you think Rockstar's best games were after the eliminated the competition?
@@staringcorgi6475 I meant competition that is big enough to actually count as a competitor. Ones that are big enough to actually threaten the profits of GTA.
"I've never seen a company make so many stupid decisions, and still get so many second chances. All the while refusing to learn anything from their mistakes, or listen to their fans." *Bathesda has entered the chat*
If Elder Scrolls VI tanks, Bethesda is over. There is no established IP they could not fuck up. Fallout 5, maybe, but I think gamers are already tired of Bethesda and have been for a while. Imagine still using Creation Engine in the year of our lord 2025.
I once sat in a Costco food court next to a Volition dev who worked on Saints Row (the 2022 one), and we organically struck up a convo "where are you from? Me? Here in [wouldn't be hard to figure out the town but I'm not volunteering it]! What do you do?", etc. I told him how great some of the games were and how cool I thought it was that he has that opportunity and asked him what kind of work he did on this specific Saints Row game (because i didn't want to offend him by asking him the next question if i didn't need to...) and he said "I'm the guy who does the menu and credits UI's." I said "ok, so none of the decisions made about the rest of the game, right?" He said "noooo. Nope, nope. So it's not my fault it's so bad! The UI looks goooOOOoood!" and we laughed and laughed and laughed. It wasn't extremely uncomfortable at all.
Thats what you get when no one takes responsibility in these new toxic positivity working environments. 15 years ago someone was responsible when something didnt work, now they pretend like no ones at fault. Also doesnt help now days where there is so important that everybody feels safe and represented, any kind of discussion or critical thinking is treated as hate speech, which recuires a performance review. Which means that every single thing just gets nodded of, otherwise it gets to the chopping block 😂
I lowkey always felt like Rockstar paid Volition to take Saints Row sideways, they were literally killing it than switched up so much it never made sense to me
Part of me feels like that could be plausible but deep down. They made nearly billons with gta 5 so doubtful that could be it. Why do that when you know your competition fuck up on its own?
@@thrashertrash7331 that’s true but it was crazy that Saints could even compete with a juggernaut like GTA at any level at all. It was basically the closest thing it ever got to a rival.
True story, I dated a guy whose college professor worked on SR 3 and 4. He said that he used to talk about how much of a mess the development was and how it is a masterclass in how NOT to produce a commercially successful product.
I can 100% beleive him. I know a progranmer that worked on sr4 and he says he was furious when they decided to just "loose the source code" of these games. I mean it was a custom engine of a fully functioning open world game. They could of literally released as a game creator program just before they shut down. We would of been in a whole different timeline if that happened.
Saints Row 2 was so good that I'm still holding out desperate hope that someone, somewhere re-reboots the series or makes a game in the same vein. Even after 3, after 4, after Gat out of hell, after Agents of Mayhem, after the reboot, there is still a shred of hope left
"in Saints Row you can throw people off a bridge, in GTA IV the main character wants to throw himself off a bridge" it hurts how accurate this is.. but you are wrong about "this guy wasn't in the game" that's Mikhail Faustin!
after playing that game and literally laughing till i was crying from that one cut scene where everything turned into a musical, i knew the game series was a practice joke
Iirc the idea for original Saints Row 5 was to go back to a more serious story, akin to GTA IV. Instead, we got a circus. Saints Row 2 was an amazing mix between serious (*) story and fun gameplay.
definitely had to throw the asterisk on serious😂 the game was definitely over the top and wacky, but grounded at the same time. it felt like it was barely sticking to the ground, and that was the fun. then saints row 3 just flew off the ground and forgot about being grounded at all
I actually liked SR 2 BETTER than GTA IV! I still messes around that game time to time. Sad to see the entire series is now nothing more than a memory.
its crazy in these days that if you make one flop your publisher will just shut your whole studio down. This is why AAA games are no longer the ones pushing for innovation and are all just stale re-hash, reboots, or sequels. Indie games went from "hey remember that old game you used to love well here it is again" to the peak of new and interesting gameplay while AAA has gone the complete opposite direction.
What made saints row 2 even more better was GTA4 you couldn't do alot of stuff that you could do in San Andreas like buying multiple houses and apartments, customizing cars, and limited our clothes customization etc. RIP Saints row
Fun fact sr1 was originally going to be released on the ps3 in 2007 and it was fully complete but volition scrapped it in order to focus on developing sr2 for the console
I felt the same man I remember I always wore a purple beanie in his memory lol. I think the Devs said that they regretted putting it in the game which is crazy to me because it builds up the antagonists and the player's desire for revenge which is really important to keep you invested.

Hate to be that guy, since Driver 2 was my introduction in the sandbox genre and I loved it, but... Yeah, Rockstar did considered Driver kind of a joke. There were jabs towards the franchise in Vice City and San Andreas.
13:32 the last thing I want in a video game about crime is to play has a university student that has to pay student loans. Saints row 2 had wacky side activities and was fun but the atmosphere was nailed and with good story , believable characters that actually feel like they are part of a criminal organization.
Yeah it's definitely them. My point was rather than Roman, Dimitri or someone really recognisable they put random side characters in the wrong outfits just to mess with people trying to buy the game lol
The saddest part about this is not even a month ago I was taking with my brother about how they should make a new saints row games because I honestly missed them 😭 we was thinking the same shit too. Come to find out they made one in 2022 and I never even knew because it was that bad.. sad days lol
I loved Saints Row because how gritty, how raw it was. As players, we may harbor for the characters in the game, but we also get to see their horrible deaths because of the lifestyle they’ve chosen to live. Carlos’ death still haunts me to this day. Edit: And as a player who enjoyed both of the franchises (although I only played SR2 and SR3), I have to admit this one thing. These games are only called “GTA Clone” due to the “open world do whatever you want” type of aspect. SR franchise only focused on Playa while GTA has showcased many other periods with different characters (sometimes), such as the dark era of 90’s, the colorful era of 80’s and the golden age of hiphop and one of the worst periods of the human life, crack c*caine epidemic.
I was a huge fan of the first and second installment. SR1 is one of my favorite and most memorable games of all time. (Who remembers protect the pimp?) It's incredibly sad to see what happened to the series.
Saints Row 2 is one of the only games that I go back and play from time to time. I believe Volition tried to define itself in a new genre away from GTA which the fans despised and from what I could tell wanted the story to continue on from the Saints Row 2 DLC. The series died with Gat and was eventually thrown in the wood chipper with SR3, Lit on fire with SR4 and then pissed and defecated on with the 2022 game.
Why tf would they even bother? Not defending or glazing rockstar but had the new saints row been good their game ain’t going anywhere near gta 6 level hype people are buying that more sounds pointless
Gta was out selling SR by a lot more, SR wasn't really GTA competition. Rock star didn't need to pay off anyone, SR was just not good enough and then destroyed themselves.
Saints row 2 is so iconic to me that each time someone mentions the game, I always remember the scene with gat at the cemetery saying " get up ", it is so fucking cool. Of everything i have played during these years nothing has come close to it, its just that good for me.
if they didn't let "GTA Clone" get to their head we would've been on the good timeline, I never hear "it's a COD Clone" with a random fps (unless it literally is)
Watch dogs first and second was perfect, but again giant game company forgot to listend to the consumer so they decide what best for the fans...... LOOK ANOTHER AC or FC.....
I love the GTA franchise (apart from Online and the Detective Edition) but it's depressing to see nearly all of GTA competitors get killed off or fall into obscurity. Saint Row was killed off, Mafia didn't manage to reach it's full potential, Watch Dogs was given a disrespectful downgrade, Driver was forgotten, Sleeping Dogs sequel was cancelled, etc. The only game which I have high hopes is that anime like GTA game called Ananta which will release next year. Not sure if it will give the GTA franchise any major competition but I would love if it did.
After the failure that was the reboot it isn't happening It's pretty well all but confirmed that saints row as an IP is dead Saints row 3, 4 and the reboot just weren't true to what saints row should have been about and there's no real major desire for it anymore
Fantastic video, I've played all the games except for the reboot and there really was a big divide between the first two games and The Third, I actually enjoyed the games up until Gat out of Hell quite a lot but the way the story went after SR2 always left a lot to be desired. I would've played the reboot but after seeing the trailer I knew it would be terrible. Regarding story and characters, they could never live up to SR2.
Personally, I loved Saint's Row IV, but it's just a huge mess on 3rd generation consoles like the PS3. The superpowers also took away the fun part about vehicles: their functionality and customization. There was really no point in driving vehicles unless you're platinum trophy grinding like I was because you could just outrun the cars anyway.
Yeah GTA 4 was better than GTA 5 and I think Saint Row 1 & 2 were the best ones went down hill after that. But Red Dead 2 the story is amazing but online is shit and I hope GTA 6 is gonna have a good story!
I've played both Saints Row 3 and GTA 4. I feel GTA 4 is more serious and more resource intensive. Sains Row 3 runs well on my Intel HD Graphics which is present on my Thinkpad Laptop and Thinkcentre Mini PC. For GTA 4, I play the game on a Dell Precision Workstation with Nvidia GTX GPU. The driving experience in GTA 4 is more realistic in contrast to Saints Row 3.
If they were to kept more feeling like a Midwest Looney Tunes style of GTA instead going to science fiction then to college kids that can't shut up about college loan debt
i remember the day i pre-ordered saints row IV, only to launch it and realise that it's just a wacky game that was supposed to be a dlc for III... ironically, there are quite a lot of improvements in IV, like better customisation options in Rim Jobs, just that you wouldn't know about them because you have super powers and stuff, what a wreck
crazy i live in the town where it was made from, can say LOTS of people were hurt about their office closing, meaning they were ending everything they had.
11:40 don't let this guy fool you it was that bad me and my friends wanted that game bad I saw the writing on the wall realized it was going to be trash but my friend doesn't pay attention to trailers and he left it in his cart by mistake and bought it with another game played it and couldn't even get past the tutorial I sat there watching through the share screen the game constantly crashed literally could not get passed the section where you quit being a part of that paramilitary job the shooting was wonky and you could stand writing from the hostile NPCs in they would not attack you all and if they fixed any of that but it was horrible
GTA never really had a rival. From VC onwoards it became and stayed way bigger than any other game that could be compared to it in terms of vibe, style and diversity.
Saints Row 2 was a stand alone legendary game for me. It was the trailer you briefly show at 1:44 that convinced me to buy Saints Row 2 all those years ago when it was a new game. I was very excited for Saints Row 3 when it was announced, and it had some pretty cool stuff about it. But I hated the change of scenery and the lack of Gat. Shaundi just got super hot, and things got even sweeter. But it lacked the crazy substance and beautiful storyline that Saints Row 2 had. The gangs of Saints Row 3 were kinda cringe, and couldn't be taken seriously. Compare that to Mr Sunshine, Jyunichi, Kazuo, Shogo, The General and Maero. It was through Saints Row 2 that I discovered Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Deftones and so many other awesome songs and bands. The zombies in the abandoned underground place. The UFOs. The easter eggs. The unique safehouses and customization of them. It was the closest thing to perfect. I can't even think of anything bad about it. But disappointment hit very fast when Saints Row 3 got to the second mission. Things were being TAKEN AWAY, not worked towards.
I was a bartender in Champaign in the early 2000s. I was generally stuck working dead Monday nights along with a couple of waitresses. On occasion the Volition crew would come in and drop a few grand on the company credit card. I'd make 300 bucks plus in tips that night - unheard of on a Monday. And the rest of the bartenders were a bit peeved that I was making that much on what everyone knew was a garbage shift.
SR3 was really the beginning of the end for the series, sure it was fun but it had very little to do with the previous titles other than name alone. The characters were completely different, the boss's personality was so generic and lifeless. SR2 really was the peak it the series
I'm not gonna lie I love the later installments of the series. I completely understand why people hate them but genuinely I enjoy 4 and the reboot a ton. For me the superpowers of 4 are a nice refresher after playing other open world games that are basically only guns and I love (and hate) the reboot because of the bugs and glitches. Like driving down the road and looking away from my screen for half a second only to hear crashing sounds and my car now being halfway in the ground or the fact that if you lay down on the roof of a pedestrians car they will keep accelerating (but still making sure they are on the road) regardless of if there is any cars in front of them is super funny. But as fun as they bugs in that game can be they are equally if not worse when it comes to negative bugs and glitches. Like if you dual wield a weapon and get into a car it halves your mag ammo which makes sense because you can only use one while in a car but it halves it EVERY time you get in a car meaning if you enter and exit a car over and over it will keep halving it. That's not to mention the absolute disaster that is co-op. Not only is notoriety shared no matter how far away from each other you are every time I've played my co-op partner spontaneously cannot drive vehicles anymore. Like they can get in but if they try to go forward they basically just burnout and the only way to fix it is to restart the whole game for both people. Also the dialogue in that game is just the worst thing in the world.
@@davisfromthehills7521yeah, SR4 was for Real the down fall, i can understand that some people don't like SR3 because we are more a Organisation than a gang but everything after that was just bad except the never finished game SR money shot since it actually was interesting
the Mafia franchise still has the potential to rival GTA games especially with Mafia 4 or any future Mafia games. Too bad the separate story+freeroam and lackluster open world takes away most of the "good" things that people want in an open world game that is similar to GTA. But seeing the franchise's potential, I still have hope that one day they'll gather up enough resources (budget + talent) to one day make as good of an open world experience as any gta games. (hope being the keyword here.)

Competition is important. Now such competition no longer exists, Rockstar knows for sure that they can just sit on their asses all day while letting the GTA online money flow in.
I'd like a game somewhere in England that's something like gta its also be better if ut was set in like the 60s it'd make it alot more unique
pinned comment worthy take
Without competition, Rockstar can let their games slowly simmer and cook without being disturbed resulting in a better product than when they had competition. Why'd you think Rockstar's best games were after the eliminated the competition?
But competiton to grand theft auto is meaningless when it’ll outsell it anyways
@@staringcorgi6475 I meant competition that is big enough to actually count as a competitor. Ones that are big enough to actually threaten the profits of GTA.

I once sat in a Costco food court next to a Volition dev who worked on Saints Row (the 2022 one), and we organically struck up a convo "where are you from? Me? Here in [wouldn't be hard to figure out the town but I'm not volunteering it]! What do you do?", etc.
I told him how great some of the games were and how cool I thought it was that he has that opportunity and asked him what kind of work he did on this specific Saints Row game (because i didn't want to offend him by asking him the next question if i didn't need to...) and he said "I'm the guy who does the menu and credits UI's."
I said "ok, so none of the decisions made about the rest of the game, right?"
He said "noooo.

Part of me feels like that could be plausible but deep down. They made nearly billons with gta 5 so doubtful that could be it. Why do that when you know your competition fuck up on its own?
@GivvyOfficial94 exactly what I was thinking too. Rockstar has no competition. It's a no brainer. Saints row is their biggest runner up.
Rockstar made so much money from the GTA games, most especially GTA V. I love Saints Row, but they were hardly a competition for GTA, even with 1 & 2.

The series died with Gat and was eventually thrown in the wood chipper with SR3, Lit on fire with SR4 and then pissed and defecated on with the 2022 game.

I think the fact that I’ve never heard of the reboot until now, speaks volumes and I’ve played the whole series or so I thought
I'll never forget borrowing this from one of my friends and keeping it till they asked sum about it, man. i loved it back then .
