      Working exactly as designed. The central axle has a low profile flange wider tyre section and considerable lateral float allowing it to move some distance either way controlled by a centring spring damper arrangement, giving the locomotive a similar ability to an eight-coupled locomotive when negotiating curves so getting around the binding problems a fixed chassis/axle arrangement would cause. The result is that this central wheel can often be seen well out of apparent alignment at times but should ride in alignment on a straight track.

      @@1chuck96 I believe they use a big pump to fill the boiler with air until it reaches running pressure. 765 had to be on air temporarily when she derailed at her home (it was minor and she was rerailed just fine). However, because if the limited amount of air pressure, the engine can only be moved over a short distance, which could be useful for moving it around the shop or testing the running-gear and other moving parts.

    • @1chuck96
      @1chuck96 2 года назад +2

      @@thereadingg3945 Hmmm! Fascinating, but obviously since steam is much denser than air, can a call be made about HOW MUCH "faux boiler pressure" does it take to propel her with air? It would’ve been much cheaper and easier just to scrap it. Like all steam locomotives, this one has served its purpose and has no reason to be saved. We have an example of one on display in the Smithsonian for future generations to see... there is no reason to waste time and money preserving others!

    • @anguspaul1438
      @anguspaul1438 5 лет назад +1

      Blake Crosslin My point exactly. Steam locomotives are a thing of the past. Preserving history is important and we have the Southern 1401 on display in Washington to represent the steam era. Why should we spend the time and money to save others?

    • @markdotts6798
      @markdotts6798 5 лет назад +3

      Many would say, why not? The question is, who is the "we" in this equation? More than likely, it is done typically through private funding. In other words, if there are those who choose to spend their own money, well then, that's their business. Therefore, any other such opinions stating contrary goes the old saying "talk is cheap". End of discussion.... Period.
