True story about Leon Coffee. Leon was in Nampa Idaho, for the Snake River Stampede rodeo. He had a pickup, truck he used for hauling a very heavy trailer he used for supplies and I believe he had it setup for sleeping in. He came to our new car dealership, to purchase a new GMC 1 ton dually pickup. He took possession of the pick-up, and headed on out to the next rodeo stop. He got about 60 miles away, climbing a slight grade, pedal to the floor, when the brand new 454 engine started knocking on that grade. We hopped in our tow truck, and towed it back to our service department. We ordered another complete, brand new 454 engine, for it, and had his brand new truck on the road in less than a week. Leon couldn't stick around while we were working on it, because he had to be at the next rodeo. Leon flew back to get his new pick-up with another 454 engine in it. He made it as far as the last time, hauling that very heavy trailer, when the engine blew up AGAIN! Once again, we hauled it back to our shop, and put another engine in it! The reason the engine kept blowing up, was because engines HAVE to have a break in period. He was working the engine way too hard, gas pedal to the floor, heavy trailer, on a steep grade.The lesson to the story. You have to follow manufacturers recommendations when breaking in a new engine. Leon was in a hurry to get to the next rodeo stop, and blew up two brand new engines, trying to get to the next rodeo stop. I'll never forget that. That happened in the mid 80's . He was super cool about the whole thing. Wasn't the fault of the pick-up, he was just driving it too hard. Cool man!
Well said old man! I was telling my sister Chancie how much I miss you and Grigsby, ford, etc... And we had Woody Procell and his band at our house this summer for my youngest daughters graduation. You and Charlie Sampson are the reason, and I hope I say this right, I have always saw the man in front of me and not the color.
