    Something interesting I've learned is that the director of this film, Wes Ball, is not only a huge Zelda fan himself, but that he has proposed the idea of a motion-capture live action film in the past. That makes me optimistic that this could turn out amazing. Also, Nintendo has also done a good job with a live action/motion capture film with Detective Pikachu. It had human actors, but still had such love for the material put into it.
    Also, when you mentioned The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, I was thinking that could lead to all manner of new or older ideas that can't be explored in the games. For example, I have an idea for the villains, if it is a trilogy: First Movie: Link vs Corrupt King of Hyrule from the Adventure of Link's instruction manual. Second Movie: Link vs Ganondorf. Third film: Link vs his darkest self (Shadow Link.)
    Whatever decision they make...I have hope!

    Nintendo is very protective of their IPs. There's a story of how Nintendo corrected Disney on how Bowser was holding a teacup incorrectly in Wreck It Ralph and went into detail how he would actually hold one, so I don't have any doubts they would try to make everything a perfect as possible including the casting and the design of the races. That being said, I feel like the Rito would be the hardest to convert into live action. Birds I feel like are the hardest to make anthropomorphic in live action mainly cuz of making them having beaks yet speaking human words may look weird. I also do agree that Link and Zelda should be new faces. They're such iconic characters and any actor who's been in many other things, I will only see that actor, not Link or Zelda. However I have seen a few pictures of how Benedict Cumberbatch looks like Zant and I think that's kinda funny and *almost* want to see that.

    The thing with Link is he both is and isn’t a blank slate. Skyward sword, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess all gave him some defining character traits that made him feel more like his own character while still being somewhat of a projection of the player. And while I love BOTW/TOTK Link, he does have character but unfortunately we don’t get to see much of it. So I just wonder what approach they’re going to take with him in the movie.

  • @CaptBurgerson
    @CaptBurgerson 9 месяцев назад +3

    I’ve been staunchly on the side of wanting an animated film, but you make some very good points. My stance has been rooted in your second and third points mostly, that many of the fantastical elements (such as the various races of Hyrule) are more likely to look silly or out of place if done in live action. A lot of recent MCU properties come to mind, say what you will about She Hulk, but from a strictly visual standpoint it was jarring having this CGI character who didn’t look *quite right* mingling with all these live action actors.
    But also there’s cases like (also MCU) Thanos who looked SO GOOD despite being also mo-cap and 3D. So the potential is there, they just REALLY need to put in the work for it.
    As you say, high risk but high reward I suppose. Great video

    • @darrenm.7980
      @darrenm.7980 9 месяцев назад +2

      I think part of the issue with recent Marvel projects and why the CGI is looking so bad now is that they're rushing everything. Nintendo as we know, doesn't like to rush things and give them the time and care they need, so hopefully this movie keeps that tradition.

    Animation has it's own risks. The main one being that people would see it as a children's movie. That's just the reputation of animation. There are exceptions, but those are either R-rated stuff, or belong to anime. But even anime isn't immune to the reputation of being for children. Studio Ghibli, the company that many Zelda fans wanted to make a Zelda movie, is known for children's movies. Live action has the benefit of appealing to a wider audience.

  • @MagillanicaLouM

    I see what you're saying. Though when I imagine an animated Zelda film, I don't picture or even want it to be like the Mario movie or ghibli made. I don't think it would or should follow a specific title's artstyle either. It can easily pioneer it's own to stand out amongst all the different iterations of the games. Whatever that may be would be up to Nintendo and the would be studio working on it. It could be something beautiful and stand out in this era lacking in 2d big screen releases that aren't tied to an existing anime/manga series. You know it's bad when DISNEY'S 100th anniversary celebration animated feature was planned to be 2d but they scrapped the idea cause whoever they got at that studio basically had a skill issue and said it was too hard lol. Which is why i disagree a bit that animation would be the safe option in this scenario.
    Animation is unfortunately seen as lesser than, and I think Nintendo knows that neither Zelda nor any of their other IPs will ever come close to the Mario movie's financial and pop culture success in any regard. Cause like... Y'know, Mario. But they could've still made something stand out with an animated film with Zelda's whacky but beautiful medieval verse that would go on to be beloved and could leave impact in a different way, potentially sparking interest in big 2d animated films again. Like yeah, LotR, Harry Potter etc have done live action fantasy well. Live action films older than those have done it well. But that's the thing. We have these examples already, big live action movies are already everywhere and talked about already. Even in animation the usual 3d stuff has taken over even if some have been playing around with style after spiderverse. But what was the last big just 2d animated film y'know?
    Idk just speaking as a mildly more invested in the medium than average consumer, it feels like everyone's just doing the same stuff with movies and Zelda could've been a first step at an opportunity to bring back the magic of a medium of film that seems to be endangered. I am also someone that believes animation to inherently just be superior to live action for settings like Zelda and a lot of Nintendo's stuff. But you do bring up benefits that live action can have and I understand that general audiences now do look at live action with more respect. And well the decision has been made already lol. Just a matter of waiting for that first trailer at this point.

    I think live action is safer but animation would be better. The cosplay cheese-risk is the worst issue with live action route. I agree safer isn't always better but when it comes to Zelda I think animation is better since it's a franchise that has always been made in an anime/manga style. Live action is more cost effective and easier to market to wider audiences, but if I was gonna make my dream Zelda movie, I would let Avatar Studios make it

    Being a massive Zelda fan, I definitely am worried that they will do it wrong. It has to be like LOTR. The music, the epic feel of an adventure, the theatrical landscapes. Also, I’m worried it will be too short. They can’t compress an epic adventure into 2 hours without losing a lot of details. I just hope that someone making this film is a fan of LOTR.

    I have some examples that disprove the points. Fans say that the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has a great blend of humor and seriousness. I saw a comment on another video saying that Link can work well speaking in short sentences, and in John Wick 4, the title character only spoke less than 400 words. From what I know, the Spider-Verse franchise has lesser known actors playing the characters, and that was made by Sony.

      Only your first comment goes against anything I've said, but I don't like Guardians of the Galaxy that much. I find it hard to take seriously because of how ridiculous it is 2 seconds later. Also, that storyline is nothing like the Zelda franchise...it wouldn't translate. Just cause it works for those comics doesn't mean it works for Zelda.

    One thing I‘ve been wondering about with live action (I talked about this in a video of my own haha!) is the question of violence. Zelda has violence in the games but it’s still family friendly-ish because it’s more cartoony - so how realistic do you think they’ll go with the fighting in live action? I feel like Nintendo won’t want to alienate a younger audience by being too dark but I don’t know how they could avoid it in this format 😂 Would love to hear your thoughts!!

    I don’t think it’s fair to compare the Harry Potter franchise to Zelda.
    Mario and Zelda maybe two different franchises but both are still games made for animation and for younger audiences.
    I believe one of the secrets to the Super Mario Bros movie(2023) success is it was able to appeal to children and adults who grew up playing the games by having characters who looked just like the characters from the games. I also found the film to be quite adventurous so I don’t see why you can’t have a adventure with animation.
    To counter point your assessment, you say the How to train your dragon franchise was silly, well so was the hobbit trilogy and dungeons and dragons. I can see a animated Zelda film working with a darker and more serious tone than HTTYD wile still having it’s funny moments.
    Live action doesn’t always mean more serious and dramatic. Exp. If you saw the Jafar and final showdown’s in both Aladdin’s 1992 and 2019 versions , the animated one was more darker and dramatic wile the live action one was more goofy.
    Animated films don’t necessarily have to have big Hollywood names to voice the characters to be successful(exp. Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jay Baruchel as hiccup).
    In terms of being epic, Times are changing for animated films lengths ( spider man across the spider verse was 140 min).
    With violent content, the Zelda games were never excessively brutal or gory. It’s ok to have some killings and a little blood in American cgi animated films.
    To be fair the film can work both ways but from my point of view live action is the safest route and animation is the excellent risk.

    How were Zelda game not prominently story based? 😐 They've always been heavily story driven.
    BotW and TotK were almost lacking any story and its not for nothing if they are the games that attracted the most new fanbase, because it was completely different from all the other games that main point was delivering us an amazing story where in the two latest game it was 100% mechanics and not much more.

    • @TheGeekApprentice
      @TheGeekApprentice  9 месяцев назад

      The developers have stated time and time again that story is never a priority. Fun gaming is top, which is why the lore doesn't always work together easily unlike other gaming franchises. I don't mind it, I like the stories as is.
      I disagree about botw and totk lacking story comparatively. Totk at least had one of the best stories imo.

    • @benjaminh.clement1292
      @benjaminh.clement1292 9 месяцев назад

      @@TheGeekApprentice (just want to preface that any CAP word is just for emphasis ahah) BotW and TotK are pretty much the GTA of Zelda 😕 there are stories in them, but they openly said (at least for TotK, don't know for BotW) that the story was the last thing they did, and it shows.
      A LOT of the NPC we meet for the second time have absolutely no idea who Link is, like, you are literally introduced again to them and not in a "hey it's me and that's what I've been up to these past years" but literally don't know who Link is. The story of BotW seems to have close to no impact at all for most NPC on TotK.
      Because even if we'd say "well it was an Open World so the player might have not done this" how did the Hero of Hyrule, the one that fought off Calamity Ganon is a nobody in Hyrule that needs introduction to most NPC?
      The story of BotW made sense even if I wasn't a fan that we don't actually play it, but there was one that revealed information about the New Hyrule (since they came out to say that it was so far in the future it's almost a new land).
      But in TotK unless you forage for every little tidbit of information to then assemble them like a puzzle you have almost no story. THE main thing that this game talks about, the Imprison War (pretty sure I butchered that word) isn't even talk about other than "Ganondorf attacked and we defended ourselves". Literally all four ancient Sages just tell you the same EXACT Stories. And again, we don't play that story, not even through a playable Zelda in the past. And I've never wanted to play as Zelda (other than a cool idea I have for an Ocarina of Time Second Quest), but that at least would have made the memories feel less like just watching a movie in a video-game instead of playing a game.
      And even if older Zelda game had the primary focus of creating new mechanic and then build the game around that, ALL the game (except the one like Triforce Heroes) had amazing stories.
      The best exemple is Skyward Sword (which is my favorite Zelda game alongside A Link to the Past) COMPLETELY changed what Zelda gameplay ever was. I for one LOVED the motion control and yes the whole game revolved around that new mechanic, so that was obviously the main thing they worked on, but they also delivered an AWESOME story, probably THE Best of all Zelda game and although all opinions are valid I'm ready to die on that hill 😂😛
      So Story not being a priority doesn't mean that Story ever was the last thing that was on their mind like it was the case for TotK.
      First Legend of Zelda game was obviously very restricted and the second as well, mostly because of the hardware.
      But it'd be a lie to say that Story wasn't a very important part of any Zelda game following that. And I wouldn't believe it either if the story of those games were always just an afterthought once everything else was created.
      And yes there's gymnastics to make to connect some of the stuff between games, but those gymnastics are possible to make, which is even hard to do in most aspect between BotW and TotK. A lot of BIG information isn't even found in the game itself but just in interviews, like where did all the Sheikah Tech go? Just vanished, POOF. They had put a Plot Hook with a Divine Beast at the very end of BotW in the hidden credit scene and didn't even elaborated on that in the DIRECT Sequel.
      In both last games THE most important artefact of that franchise isn't even mentioned, at the most its an Easter Egg.
      No matter if it was a priority or not before, in the last two game the quality and attention given to the story (and more precisely how it was told, because more than a lot of players were spoiled endgame "plot twist" because of the disorganized memories) has DRASTICALLY dropped. All the for sake of mechanic and Open World, Zelda is more than fun mechanics.

      I guess I just disagree. :) I see no issue with their stories (botw and totk). And to push back about npc's not knowing link. Actually, pretty much every npc that EXPLICITLY doesn't "remember" link makes sense. Have you ever worked retail? Just cause you may have had a frequent customer, doesn't mean you remember them fully. :) CaptBurgerson is working on a video about this. I recommend subscribing to him and waiting for that video. :)@@benjaminh.clement1292

      @@TheGeekApprentice well, for of all thank you for reading that Mammoth of a comment 😛 but the Retail exemple isn't a good one (for me at least) because having worked in retail (over 8 years ago) I still remember A LOT of the client that came to the place. And still remember awesome memories of them as well. But that might be my ADHD that decides to make place for things that I don't need to actually remember 😛
      But Link isn't just a nobody, he's literally the Savior of Hyrule. It'd be like someone being alive in the first Mission to the Moon not remember who Lance Armstrong is a few years after it happened. Even today people remembered and he did not save the world ahah, well, apparently the mission open the eyes for Planet preservation, but that's another story 😛
      So "Main" NPC not remembering who Link is? That doesn't add up, especially since the game should take for granted that you did those quest. And would even maybe be an insensitive for player who did not 100% the shrine or city quest to want to go back to BotW to see what they missed if NPC were to make reference of that.
      I can totally agree to disagree on if the Story was good or not because that is 100% based on opinion and preferences. I have a friend that absolutely loved the Manga/Anime-ish way to show some battle like the one where Zelda use her time manipulation to attack Ganondorf in the Big Battle. And for me that was very unimpressive how that battle was showed to occur.
      But no matter if the story in the past was good or not, I just can't get behind the fact that they went AGAIN with the memory trope. I was already not a fan of Zelda just POOF in the Past because I expected a lot more from her character since it was basically none-existent in BotW. Other than in memories and it was the very same thing again in TotK. Even if I didn't like the Storytelling method in BotW, no matter what order you take doesn't spoil the story for the player.
      We actually have absolutely no impact on what happen to the Master Sword, lots of people came with theory of how the Blade would be repaired and mine was that if we go back to the Sky we could find the Four Sword to replace the Master Sword. But no, the blade just repairs itself with time. And even if I haven't tried, I'm pretty sure you don't even need to go get it before the last battle as you can probably pick it up from Zelda's forehead during the fight if you haven't or just use any other weapon if it's not possible during that fight.
      And I don't understand why they equate Open World to "Link is Spider-man" which is probably one of the reason why it took so long to release both game. I really hope that if they continue to do Open World they will change that, because in my opinion that's one of the reason why they can't see that they can come up with a great linear story in an open world. Something MANY other games have done before, just need to look at all the Elder's Scrolls game.
