    Marvelous. Great that Memphis Shake again.
    I ' m sure they didn't play it the last years so often.
    " Blue Chime Stomp was released in 2015 or 2016.
    There they have recorded it.
    Yes they have developed it.
    Thanks for filming and sharing here with us.
    Dave 🤗😀🥳

    Many thanks, James. As you say, they have been playing this tune for several years; and it's interesting to observe its evolution. It's an uncomplicated piece of music, having just two 16-bar themes and using very few chords. In this performance, Shaye calls for no solos, apart from those two-bar breaks in Theme One. So we have almost three and a half minutes of full collective improvisation. They seem to be playing it in a more simple and mellow fashion, exemplified by the lines Shaye takes over the diminished F chords. Likewise, when they move into the second 16-bar theme (on the signal from Shaye at 02:05) we no longer get the four-bar banjo tremolo at the start of the theme. 'Memphis Shake' is included in the band's 'Blue Chime Stomp' album, which was released eight years ago. In that recording, as you may recall, they also opted for full collective improvisation and Jason's banjo tremolos featured prominently.

      My how time flies! I can't believe it has been 8 years since "Blue Chime Stomp." It seems like last year.

      Agreed, James. There's a lesson for us: art is long, but life is short, as I believe the Ancients used to say.

    What better way to start off the day. I think that's the first time I've ever saw Greg play 6 string banjo. Thanks for sharing James!

    Thank you, James!! I already have tickets to see them in Asheville in June at the Grey Eagle!I like this number quite well. Was thinking about dinner at Adolfo's just a few minutes ago, which you had recommended, remembering those mussels!!!

    Man, Tuba Skinny are so great. Does anyone know how hard it is to sound so cohesive? Unbelievably good

    I would liked to have seen a bit more of Molly, but as James has often said it can be difficult in a crowded club to get a good position to video the band.
    Molly can be seen playing and singing with Shaye together with the lovely Julie an Dizzy from Shake Em Up.
    Has Molly now left the Vipers?

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  3 месяца назад +1

      No, Molly is still with the Vipers. Regarding the camera position, I was very close to the band, so much so that I could not get the entire band in frame. It is actually the best spot in the club, sitting at the end of the bar next to the band makes for better sound and reduces the number of people walking in front of the camera.

      Molly was a temporary stand in for Max. He had another engagement. He is still in the band. Erika still performs with the band during festivals and tours. Jason Lawrence on banjo no longer plays with the band. He is now a carpenter.

      And, with due respect to Max, it should be said that Molly is an excellent stand-in. There's a great 1-hour performance on YT with Molly's own quartet recorded on 9 February 2023 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum (Jazz Foundation of America). Take a look and enjoy 😉

      Not forgetting that Jason and Greg would occasionally swap instruments.

    • @tonygreen2682
      @tonygreen2682 3 месяца назад

      Not sure. I've never seen Greg play the banjo, but of course that doesn't mean it doesn't happen 😉. On the other hand, I've seen quite a few videos where Jason and Max swap instruments. There are some earlier videos out there with Molly playing the banjo, including at the Spotted Cat, but I haven't seen any recent ones.

      @@tonygreen2682 You’re right, my apologies, how could I have possibly confused Greg with Max.
