Hi Al, You will never know how long it took me to sort out my machine. I bought a brand new one 2 years ago and could not figure out WHY it would not feed the leather. Eventually, I gave up trying to use it, until I found your videos, I reached nirvana!!!!! Following your instructions, the machine started taking the leather. I am so overwhelmed as thought I was going to have to sell this useless piece of metal. You are a genius . Thank you very much..
@@albaneforleather Thanks Al. I watched your videos for sharpening the bell and figured out that it was just that my blade was really dull. Thank you for all your great videos! They have really helped me with my skiver and my Class 4 sewing machine!!!
If you set up everything on the machine correctly. I think it is mainly down to the blade as I found with mine, just keep follow Al's instruction. I sharpened my blade 3 times at the beginning before it started to feed the leather and think I will need to do it once or twice more to make the machine feed the leather properly.
The presser foot on this machine seems to have a pretty steep bevel, which seems to be fine for edge skiving. But for those of us trying to get these bell skivers to panel skive, a presser foot with only a very slight bevel seems to work better. I don't see much discussion about differing quality of presser feet, other than polishing, which is only 25% of the issue.
You’re such a good teacher! Thank you so much for this. I’ve been having trouble thinning some chrome leather for handbag piping. I need to be more aggressive about sharpening my skiver blade. Up to now I’ve just been a little scared of it! I need to overcome my fear of sparks. Thanks again.

Hi Al, I just purchased my very first skiving machine, I bought the Cobra NP4 Bell Knife Skiver today and I was really surprised that there isn't any paper work or instruction/instruction videos with this machine at all. I have a few questions about your video, when you talk about over heating and warping the blade how do you keep from this happening? How often does a person need to sharpen the blade? I have a lot of questions on the operation/oiling points of this machine and I don't even know what all the knobs are for but thankfully you made this video that tells me something about the operation so thank you. . Do you know if there's an owners instruction manual that tells a person how to operate this machine or what and how to adjust the knobs? Thanks for any advice or help you can help me with and thanks again for making this video. Tammy
Tammy Altic overheating happens when your blade is dull fails to cut and is just rubbing on the leather. So if you follow the sharpening procedures in this video you shouldn't have any problem. appropriate level of sharpness will be governed by how much you use the machine. It's not uncommon to sharpen two or three times a day. It's simply depends on what you're doing and the volume going through the machine. most of the time I don't go through the entire procedure just do a quick touch-up run. Where we recommend doing three procedures and then the final deburr. I may only do one and a final deburr. As far as the knobs are concerned they're all detailed in the video.
Al Bane thank you for your help. I'm sure this machine needs oiling, can you maybe do a video on all the oiling points and how often to oil or give me some advise on this. Sorry for all the question just trying to find out as much as I can so I can operate this machine with confidence. Thank you again Al
I am reviewing my understanding of proper grinding stone positioning in relation to the knife's cutting edge. Sharpening should happen from the knife edge toward the top of the bevel, meaning that marker ink removal should start at the knife edge and move up the bevel, correct?
Position the knife as close to the presser foot as possible without contacting any of the surrounding parts on the machine. Ink the bevel. The advance the stone. It will shape the bevel by itself.
Great Video Al. I have an issue that I was wondering if you could help. When you are feeding the leather through, the machine grabs it and pulls it. For some reason, mine NP-4 has stopped pulling the leather and it literally stays in one spot and spin...what could the issue be?
First thing is make sure the blade is sharp. Next I will check the feed roller and make sure that it hasn't gotten too far down. Remember one business card thickness away from the blade.
@@albaneforleather Yep, moved the roller where it touched the blade and then backed it back down where a sheet of paper slides from front to back. Leather still not being pulled through. It literally spins in place.
I'm trying to get my Chinese 801 skiver to work better on thin goatskin and calf. I need to get better consistency going from 1mm to 0.5mm and am wondering if a finer white grinding stone to instead of the blue will help me achieve this.
I’ve found it somewhat helpful to increase the spring tension on the bottom roller feed. The hook shaped piece coming out of the left side of the machine, toward the back, can be adjusted to a different notch to increase or decrease the tension in the spring, which increases the pressure between the leather and the knife. This can provide the bite needed to feed tougher leather though, in my experience. Good luck!

My skiver won’t feed the leather either. What did you do to make it feed the leather properly?

Any feet in specific you would recommend for panel splitting?

Nobody has yet showed how the adjust for veg tan leather ....how bout it Al

Its was recommended to me that the np4 is more for oil tan but could do veg tan with lots of adjustment but the np10 is designed for veg tan.
