I get what you're saying, and I dug Artie, but the controversy came from just how relentlessly antagonistic he was. When he'd been on Conan or Letterman before, even if he was raunchy he would still be likeable. As we know, Artie was at the beginning of the end here in terms of the Stern show, the wheels were coming off majorly and often times he was more belligerent than funny. That's not to say that this wasn't entertaining and interesting to listen to, it was, because it was a train-wreck...

He may have grown into it, and to be honest he gave back pretty good too. Not at the level of a real comedian but that one about the chins was pretty damn solid. He seems like a chill guy actually but probably not a talk show host.
Like genuinely, after the incident happened and he was able to tell his story you can see his dream of what he actually wanted, like people just hanging out and having a good conversation. @@SpartanArmy117
This is a wonderful example of why I love and appreciate this channel because this is stuff I missed and a part of comedy history that I want to know. You sure dig up a lot of stuff!
Gonna be honest here. Artie didn't even seem that outrageous. It was pretty funny and literally everyone in the studio was having a blast, including the audience. Maybe modern podcasts have skewed my threshold for chirping/banter, but it really didn't seem *bad* at all.
couldn't agree more. he was just doing it. HBO was just far removed from the point of this kind of comedy. I wish I was there in the crowd to say I was there.
Norm did not love this. This was Artie amongst an addiction binge happening to sit (and Completely fill) the chair he’s in. It was not Norm’s antics, it was Artie’s drug addiction. Norm was thinking of jokes, Artie was thinking of his next line. Corporatism is the elite hack, but compensating for being high and regretful is as hack as a sack.
He deliberately put the cig in PAUL'S water while he wasn't looking. Probably scared he'd have been sued for attempting to poison him. Artie doesn't have genuine concern for anyone but Artie.
If Artie had just taken the shots back and smiled without getting all vindictive with his comebacks, it could have been a great segment. Artie's insecurity always won.
At this point in his life, he was at the end of his rope. He was obviously using during this whole time period, and he admits it, like it shows in the video. And Artie STILL had his chances. Everyone was in his corner, and he did some of his best work after all this on CRASHING. But as someone who chased the dragon as well - and have been able to maintain my sobriety for 13 years - I get up some mornings and the first thing I want to do is use. Luckily I have a support structure, good therapists, etc. As soon as Artie hits the comedy circuit, the enablers come out of the woodwork, and if I was getting H and vicodin shoved in my face I'd fall hard too. Part of that is that anger at yourself for being so weak, and eventually the demons you are trying so hard to cover up with your drug use come out to play, and here is the result. I totally agree that had Artie made this playful, it would be a different thing. It reminds me a little of the infamous Joe Materese meltdown when he brings Artie, Anthony Cumia, and Jimmy Norden on to his show and they proceed to rip him apart. Actually, Buck gets some got shots in, unlike Materese.
Jason and Paul handled that well. Jason looked like he was trying not to show how much he was enjoying watching Artie completely deconstruct the entire show with front row seats lol. He had some good comebacks aswell
@@poindextertunes lmao you can tell he appreciates that these types of people exist and enjoys the characters they are, but not enough to drag himself into cancelation aswell, he's swallowing those laughs down to keep his bank account up. No, I think he wasn’t enjoying it all that much actually. he seemed pretty nervous because I think he didn’t want to be the target. Even with his comeback that wasn’t too bad, he almost seems nervous to say it which I don’t blame him. You’re on live TV with a comedian who does this for a living that’s also on the equivalent of social performance drugs (Xanax, heroin, uppers) That clearly invites people to throw shots at him so that he can devour them.

Another great video, 2lazy. This is back when I was a Stern diehard. As you mentioned, Buck and his producers really egged Artie on to do this. Unfortunately, they did not realize giving a roast comic on heroin carte blanche on your new HBO show is not the best of ideas. Joe knew.. and wanted this. Buck was a Stern simp & even used this incident to film a promo for future episodes.. Artie is chasing Buck down the streets of NYC or something? I vaguely remember. They got what they wanted and then some. I love how Sudekis thought he was going to try to do a bit of battling, a little roast tit for tat with Artie and then quickly saw he was out of his league. Paul Rudd, to his credit, recognized what was happening and stayed out of it as much as possible. Always fun watching big comedic actors go through this with unhinged real comedians. In this case, probably on 600 mg of Percocet & a bottle of Jack Daniel's lol.

Art destroyed that by going after his throat but instead of Jo, getting angry at it, he tried to make lemonade out of it with the Times Square skit. That’s the move of an entertainment purist. Too bad at HBO didn’t have the nuts. But Joe is a certified stud for trying to swing it.

Joe Buck is forever a legend for this event. He handled it literally as well as any person could. Plus, it was so interesting that we are talk about it almost 20 yrs later

Damn Paul and Jason handled that beautifully. Especially Paul's "lucky pierre" to kind of keep the peace.
Artie's genuine concern about him drinking the water actually makes me like him.
Wow, what a humanitarian.
He deliberately put the cig in PAUL'S water while he wasn't looking. Probably scared he'd have been sued for attempting to poison him. Artie doesn't have genuine concern for anyone but Artie.
This was fireworks. The tug and pull of tension and chemistry was a sight to behold.

Sudiekis held his own tho? like he said he still had a shot at a career and he made it 🤷♂️

He threw in a nice non-offensive line and immediately realized that Artie doesn't chuckle along, he hits back hard and doesn't stop.
