This reminds me I still need to look at my Sony C20 that has poor take-up during playback. Hopefully it's got the same fault, as it fine near the end of a tape where the take up moves slowly but at the start tape just spills out after the pinch roller. The problem with most Betamax cassettes is you can't see if the take up spool is moving or not.
Fingers crossed it'll be the same issue - it's certainly a common one. I did always like the TDK beta cassettes that had a window for each spool and looked more like a VHS cassette. So useful to see how good take-up is. Good luck with your C20 and let us know how you get on. 😊
