Attended this concert two days ago in Prior Lake, MN and had a blast! Randy Bachman at age 80 was sensational, great strong voice, very funny comedian and historian educating and entertaining at the same time. The combination of his greatest works as co-founder of The Guess Who and BTO was remarkable and memorable. Seeing him perform with his son after the loss of his two brothers was heartbreaking. Give this 80-year-old legend a break and enjoy the concert!

I wouldn’t sweat it. I saw “BTO” heavy on the quotes back in 1985 and it was the same thing. Bachman Solo. FYI it was the loudest show I ever went to, even louder than Motörhead opening for Ozzy! I have been to probably 400 shows and I got my ears ripped. I am only 2 years older than you but at your current age I got tinnitus for life now. Do you want or need that? Ask Rick Beato. I blame mine on Randy Freakin Bachman.

Agree completely. I know Fred is old and doesn't have it in him anymore but it would have been great to see at least those two guys together. But whose fault is that? I could have seen them over the years and never did. Would really love to see Burton Cummings with Randy again. That's the pairing that should do those Guess Who songs. 👍

Spot on commentary. Classic Rock in general is running on fumes.
BTO was the soundtrack of my highschool days, but this is false advertizing.
Tribute bands disguised as Foghat, Deep Purple, Foreigner are all we have left.
Chicago lucked out by finding singers that sounded like Peter Cetera
as did Journey when it found that karaoke singer in the Philippines.
In retrospect, the 2005 Cream Reunion was an absolute miracle.

Years ago, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings did go out on the road as "Bachman-Cummings" and played BTO, The Guess Who, and solo tracks and it was terrific. A stack of talent! It was properly billed and the gentlemen put on a tremendous show. To your point, it was billed and delivered clearly unlike what BTO is delivering right now.

I've seen Bachman & Turner,Bachman/Cummings and Randy with his solo band.
Bachman & Turner had both the BTO singers,so it was a BTO heavy set list. Bachman -Cummings added Guess Who numbers and dropped CF Turner tunes. Bachman and his solo band was a a trip thru Randy's history, combining both BTO and Guess Who songs.. That sounds a lot like the path that this Bachman Turner Overdrive " reunion " is on. Randy's solo band already knows all the tunes, they just have to sort out who sings the songs that Randy doesn't..But....it's a BTO tour ?? That's a large " No way" for me.

The saddest thing is that The Guess Who is one of the few 60's rock bands which has all of its classic line-up members still alive (Bachman, Cummings, Kale, Peterson). Its a shame that they're not playing together anymore. They could've made much more money.

Completely understand your point here, Pete. I remember on the Guess Who's Running Back Thru Canada reunion tour in 2000/01, Burton and Randy were the drivers of that lineup, and they included Let It Ride in the set list. That was cool, as BTO was essentially shuttered, and it was a great nod to Randy's years after he (acrimoniously) split from the GW. This, though, is something else. While those GW songs are all from Randy's time in the band, it would have been better to limit that to just a couple tracks. I would assume Tal would sing lead vocals on the GW cuts (and his own hit, which is really cool), but just like the current GW cover band, he can't sing like Burton. Regardless, it will be a great show/tour. I wonder if Burton's prepping of a solo album plus his own current cross-Canada tour made a Bachman/Cummings tour impossible?

I saw his tour in Kitchener ON probably 5 yrs or so ago, sounds like the same line up as you listed Pete. He did a ton of George Harrison covers as he had a project reinterpreting Harrison and Beatles songs, also a chronological setlist going from Guess Who through BTO, and he told stories in between songs. At least we knew this ahead of time, and seats were dead center 2nd row so I was literally a few feet away. Good show, but he was mid 70s then so I think he and Fred are pushing 80 by now. Going out as BTO though you aren't at all wrong to be disappointed - I think he loves his cover tunes though, we also saw him at a festival in Hamilton ON with another Canadian act the Sadies and he did a killer 10 minute cover of Neil Young's Like A Hurricane. Given his age I guess we can still appreciate him playing live, still sounds great too! But not as BTO for sure.

What I find hilarious is Burton Cummings & Randy Bachman are suing Jim Kale (rights of The Guess Who name who is not touring) & Garry Peterson for using The Guess Who even though Peterson is tour with a band that recorded two studio albums as The Guess Who. 2018 album does sound like a Guess Who album but their 2023 album doesn't even sound like a Guess Who album. They're called a cover band.
While Randy Bachman is touring with a band that is called BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive). With *ZERO MEMBERS* (except for Randy) from BTO. CF Turner is not touring & Randy Backman is sitting. Both are due to health. Just like Guess Who. BTO is a cover band.

What you want and what you get are becoming further and further apart. That being said, this may have been Randy's only course of action to secure bookings in the US. As long as people have the resources to use to see the touring band, and past setlists, at least you can go into the show knowing what to expect, and not be completely blindsided. It may not be BTO, but I'm sure the band will be on their A-game, as this could be Randy's last hoorah before leaving the road behind. At least they won't be avatars!!

Bands, managers, and promoters greatly underestimate the artists' notoriety and the knowledge and technical skills of the fans.
If we don't already know who Randy Bachman is, then we can find out within a matter of seconds. Rather than promoting themselves as some band which essentially no long exists, why not simply just promote the genres of music which they plan to play?
    "RANDY BACHMAN
The legendary 60s and 70s Rocker plays his most iconic songs.
That would pretty much do it. If you love the artist, then you'll buy a ticket. If you don't know the artist, but you like the genre, then you'll look him up, and you'll buy a ticket.
There's no need to attempt to bullshit or fool the fans into thinking that the old band, which they once knew, will be appearing in concert. As Pete pointed out, we can now access set lists and line-up information and history. We can even watch bootleg fan videos from the current tours.
The old deceptive tour promotion tactics are very outdated, and they need to just stop it. They're only fooling a handful of people at each show, and who knows how many people they're pissing off in the process.

2014 Bachman Turner released an album. A good one at that. They toured as just Bachman Turner could not use the name BTO. The other guy owned the rights. So, I read. They toured and I saw them open for Alice Cooper in Grand Rapids Mi. It was outside so it was warm. Thought it was in a parking lot. They did songs off the album. BTO songs probably. So long ago hell I don't remember. What I do remember they sounded great. Thought they sounded better than The Coop. I love Halo Of Fly's but it sounded strange. Like real strange. I am a guitarist, so I notice things like that. They weren't just tuned down to D Flat. It was D. I didn't like it.

To be fair, Randy has as much a claim to those Guess Who songs as anyone: they're all from his era in the band, and he wrote or co-wrote most if not all of them. I've also got no problem with Tal doing his song. It was a bona fide hit, after all. But yes, billing the whole thing as BTO is dubious to say the least.

Great commentary- actually great setlist but this is really a Randy Bachman solo tour. But as you said, he wouldn't be able to draw as compared to going out as BTO. This is just false advertising. I won't go. I'm sure it's a very enjoyable show, but should be Randy Bachman solo tour.

From what I understand many bands are touring with 1, 2, or I think none of the original members. Could you imagine Ringo going on tour as the Beatles? Most would laugh at that but it seems other bands do this. Note: this is what I have been hearing on youtube music channels. I don't get to many concerts, live in middle of nowhere, so no actual experience with this.

  • @wolf1977

Fred Turner reportedly "playing select dates", with Randy B running the show...I wonder exactly what they're touring? Isn't the last new 'product' Randy's 2018 album By George By Bachman (which for me contained one good track & that was a Beatles cover) - Except for last year's "NEW" Guess Who album Plein D’Amour (pretty good rock album but NOT GW)? Bachman isn't in the current GW lineup (WIKI calles them a "cover band") so I can't imagine he'd play any of their newer/original stuff, so we're back to (maybe) covering some older GW hits.
So it's an oldies/revival show? Then I read this (from 2023): "Joining Bachman in this revival of BTO is his son, Tal Bachman. Also tapped for the revival are Mick Dalla-Vee, Marc Lafrance and Brent Knudsen. Randy, Fred, and Tal are already writing and recording new songs and planning tours around the world. A BTO concert movie (filmed in 1976) is slated for release 2024, as is a double live album recorded that same year at Tokyo’s Budokan Arena.” So some new writing happening but no 'new' album (besides the '76 live recordings) - really sounds like a BTO nostalgia deal...
Last year's touring was very limited & looks like the announced 2024 dates are too - something like 9 total dates. If I were still a concert-goer (I'm not) I think I'd pass...Since this episode is labeled as a 'Rant' I'm guessing Pete's not gonna do a favorable review here either...

Randy's brother Robbie had the rights to the name Bachman Turner Overdrive. When Robbie died last year, the name rights reverted back to Randy, and he was anxious to tour under that name.

@2003Cpayne yeah, the reason Randy and Burton Cummings are suing the current Guess Who is because they're using the original Guess Who recordings which contain Randy and Burton in their radio ads for upcoming shows. Randy says that's misleading to the public.
Kinda like going out as Bachman Turner Overdrive and not having Turner in the lineup.

@williamcarter8953 Then he should call it The Randy Bachman Tour. Going out as Bachman Turner Overdrive and playing 50% Guess Who songs and a 70s compilation song is misleading. Especially when Fred Turner is nowhere to be seen or heard from.
I've seen different incarnations of Bachman Turner Overdrive over the years, and they never played any Guess Who songs in their set lists.

At least the one original member was a significant one; Randy Bachman. In 1980 I saw a version of Deep Purple with Rod Evans singing and the rest was a pick up band. He was an original member but the audience was very disappointed.
I saw BTO a long time ago open for Van Halen on the 5150 tour. It had Bachman and Turner.

Pete, doesn't sound unreasonable to me to skip this based on how it is being promoted. For me, those Guess Who tunes require Burton Cummings somewhere if not right up front on the vocals. But don't decide during the rant. Give it a thought or two more with a beer and then decide. Good luck!

Saw the Bachman and Turner show in the UK back in 2010 and it was great, all BTO stuff, with just a snippet of American Woman (with Fred singing). Randy and Burton DID tour together recently (my other half booked me flights and tickets to see them in Toronto for my 40th - but that was in 2020 and the rescheduled dates didn't work, so still never seen Burton) but think that's run it's course again (they can keep friendly if they don't see too much of each other I suppose?!). Not that they'd come here but ZERO interest in the fake Guess Who and this BTO 'lineup'.

Save your money. I am happy I saw The Guess Who in 2000 with Joe Cocker opening. Randy and Burton were great. A great mix of BTO and TGW.
Joe was better, coming back out for FOUR encores.
BTO = Bachman Turner Overplayed. Canadian Radio leans too heavily on their biggest hits to fill their hourly Canadian content requirements. And I would be happy to never hear that one Tal Bachman song ever again.
