What an incredible song. This is one that isn't listed as one of Lightfoot classics, but it should be. When this came out, the music scene had changed and nobody had time for folk artists anymore.
If you have ever been to Lightfoot concert you will have experienced that dead silent calm throughout his audience when he delivers his masterpieces .This man is a tour de force unto himself
Recall concert circa 70s when Red Shea (guitar) and John Stockfish (bass). One of best concert to this day. Hard to find this genre of music any more. Yes Gordie Canadian icon.
HAVE been to Lightfoot concert (late '70's @Calderone Theater, Hempstead, NY), at which he SCOLDED audience. -maybe not "dead silent" enough for Artiste (& there went the "calm"...)
@@dosanchoas Gord was a heavy drinker in those years and being the intense person he is it's no surprise he over reacted to something .It's a Scorpio thing .lol
@@phillecompte3438 hi phil, & thanks for poss. explanation! music lover here (as i'm sure you are.) it's just that you REMEMBER those "less than" concert experiences that leave you with an impression of performer...
Hey Ladies and Gentlemen, a shout out to Gordon, the bandmates, current, and past years. Our condolences to Gordon's family and whom you and your family's are a part of. The legacy of the memories you have created over so many decades will not be forgotten. I hope and pray you will touch upon them often sharing with us, as I know the music plays on in my mind for my eternity. Thank you Gordon Lightfoot and family. ❤
Possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard (though I prefer the version when Gord was closer to his prime, but good on him for still doing what he loves). Never could understand why this song wasn't one of his biggest.
I recently heard that he wrote this on a canoe trip in northern Ontario.....or someplace like that. Great song that's extremely underrated. So it goes...Gordon Lightfoot is a legend and his music continues to influence new generations. I miss hearing real music like this on the radio.
Not only is Gordon a great songwriter but he is also a great guitar player on both the 6-string and 12-string. Since back in the early seventies I have been trying to play along with the albums then and CD’s now. I love his early songs. Thank you Gordon for years of pleasure.
I remember the first time I heard this, so long ago. It's as breathtaking now as it was then.... Let it go.... And if you do not believe me come and gaze upon the shadow at your door.
So many poignant, powerful lyrics. I remember the first time I heard, "You won't read that book again... because the ending's just too hard to take." Not long after I lost my dad in 1975. it's possible I might have heard the song before then, since it was released 5 years earlier, but the lyrics just hit me like, Yeah - that's how I feel. He is such a great songwriter the meanings of his songs can be interpreted depending on your own experiences, but the feelings are similar and so well expressed in his music, both they lyrics, rhythm, melody and the moods of the songs he sings.
My wife and I joined some friends to see him live at Indiana State University a few years ago. He puts on an amazing show. So much soul in every song he sings.
... Well Gordon, you're older than me by some 20 years. It appears that a lot of our life experiences and milestones have been similar. I can't help that some how you'll be the requiem of my funeral. You've expressed a lot of my experiences and recorded the emotion of the experiences. That's art ... Be at Peace, that's what I've sought yet it has always been elusive ... And thank you, for the peace that can be had (a precious gift) ...
Like fine wine, age seems to improve his songs. Maybe the vibrato may be a bit thin, but Gord still has that special iconic touch as a singer guitarist , that will continue to captivate his fans no matter where he performs.
I saw Gordon Lightfoot play a live solo show in Missoula, MT many years ago - he wasn't the most dynamic entertainer, but he sang perfectly - his vocals were identical to his recordings and his guitar work was flawless. Great show!
Wow, I have been a fan since “If you could read my mind “ and just discovered this song a few weeks ago and it totally blows my mind how beautiful it is 👍👍❤️
Tony Rice was one a the finest flat pickers ever. He was very fond of Gordon Lightfoot, and justifiably so. I never saw Gordon live but I did see Tony live many times. He regularly included a GL song in his set. Thank you Gordon for your contribution to music!
saw him last year........the crowd aged 9 to 90.............and everyone in completely in awe of his powers.......miss the feeling of looking forward to his next album or concert.
@@bishopaz He's still got the charisma of someone 30 years younger. No one can slow down the clock of time, not even a great wonderful performer singer and songwriter that he is. He is a living legend. If he wants to keep entertaining, there are plenty of people who still want to listen (like me)!
Thank you for putting this LIVE in Reno DVD up on the web. The DVD itself is very hard to find these days. I wish I could have been there in person to see this concert.
I recently got interested into Gordon's music, I already listened to the full Shadows, Dream Rose Street and Sundown albums and each has its differences. While yes, his voice did change..the change happened around after Shadows so probably 1982/1983 where his voice got noticeably nasal toned and overtime thinned probably due to age and cigarettes which Gordon quit only a few years ago along with the near death he had in 2003 the point is that he is still going strong and I wish him the best in the upcoming years to come.
The combination of Terry Clemens, Rick Haynes, Barry Keane and Pee Wee Charles was the classic and best (Gord's Gold-era) lineup of the Lightfoot band.
What an incredible song. This is one that isn't listed as one of Lightfoot classics, but it should be. When this came out, the music scene had changed and nobody had time for folk artists anymore.

Uh
Supreme talent and songwriter. Bob Dylan said this was the one song he truly wished he'd written. Gord was Canada's gift to the world. RIP
The very best of Canada..... rolled up in one talented musician! Gord has ruled the past 5 decades!
Gordon is the greatest! One of the best singer/songwriters to ever live!
Agree, Gordon and his great friend Phil Ochs are true artists that paint with words!!! Love to you from Australia ...

Listening to Gordon Lightfoot makes me feel like I'm back home in Canada.
One of the best songs of his.
OMG his delightful voice was still there in full force...23 years ago. RIP to the Minstrel of the Dawn
Saw them a few months after this. As tight a group as could be. Met the guys afterward. Nice as can be. Gordon is a Canadian natural treasure.

Me, too, but from the late 60’s. I’m still playing....and singing.
I actually saw this show, Amazing performance by an amazing performer.
reno?
Wow, that was 20 years ago! I didn't experience his magic in live performance until this year, so that is ONE good thing about 2020.
For many years this song has touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes as do many of Gordon Lightfoot's songs
Rest easy, Gord. Thanks for sharing your gift with us.
Gordon is my favorite even after he's gone his story will be told love ya gordon
Deeply missed - always cherished forever-. remembered . May 2023
I've got the DVD and it's a must for fans..Shadows is one of Gords most romantic for sure!!
He is my favourite singer/songwriter.
Ever...
And the chuch bell rang 29 times...and once more for Gordon. RIP
I still miss you after all these years

Love this song.
As Phil says below... Lightfoot is one beautiful more another artist of humans. Fabulous.
Oh that voice, the voice of Canada....
@Bee Ehess Partly true. His near death experience damaged his vocal cords in 2001, like Dylan, it doesn't matter the voice but the words of the songs.

i like how he is not a fake like most of the singers now days
Six years later and this is still true.
Beat that, man.
Gordon gets better with age
Isn't that a wonderful song.
Rick Beato brought me here.
Anyone else come here from Tony Rice?
Song would have been much richer without the synthesizer...not classic ...
If you listen to the original on the 1982 album the synth was in it.
That's my point the synthisizer cheapened the tone of this great song.
Imagine if this tune was recorded as it was in gords early career just himself red Shea and Rick Haynes only all acoustic..
The combination of Terry Clemens, Rick Haynes, Barry Keane and Pee Wee Charles was the classic and best (Gord's Gold-era) lineup of the Lightfoot band.
