And thanks for brining so many Canadian songs to the fore of America and the world. ( misty eyes and very warm heart ). Born and raised in northern Canada, the musical backdrop of my life being here played by the finest performers. Own and play an old D-18 because of TR influence.
Whoever gave this a thumbs-down has the poorest taste in music in all history! This is hands-down one of the best songs Tony ever recorded and absolutely executed flawlessly! Unbelievable Talent.
Well, sorry. I'd be one of those. I think it is a great song. Gordon Lightfoot's version is magnificent, and so is Alison Krauss's. But this arrangement turns it into a speed display that drowns out all the delicacy and emotion of the song. Sure, the musicianship is top notch, but the speed and riffing are just too overpowering.
I'm certain Gordon Lightfoot would never have an objection to Tony doing his songs. He does them justice. and Lightfoot's music is a display in genius all by itself.
Pure bliss. Lightfoot's poetry and melody with exquisite coordination of of 5 string instruments playing at the same time. I'm not familiar with bluegrass but can hear and see the intricacy and excellence.
Few song more easily bring tears to my eyes. The solos, the lyrics, the class and level of heartfelt perfection all bring this one home. “They will find us in the shadows fast asleep”
I saw Doc many times. Wonderful experience. I grew up in an adjoining county in western North Carolina. When I was a young child and went to Lenoir, Doc would sometimes be their playing and singing for people.
Three of the greatest players on their instrument: Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush. All of them playing together live. These guys would never even think to pre-record a bunch of crap to play along with.....
Native American is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time - I learned SO many tasteful guitar licks of this albumn...aplied them to all kinds of music.
Thanks for posting. TR Sings Gordon was my first Tony album. Listened to it while fixing my car eight hours straight. Found the tape in a box. Apparently, it was borrowed from a friend of my dad's. Love Tony, and I guess Gordon's OK. It's amazing what Tony did with it. Amazing. I wish I could wear a suit and do that. Too cool.
His "official" recorded version is top notch! And is a bit slower than what is heard here. His solo on the recorded version is said to be one of his favorites, and I have to agree.
Its amazing how much Tony sounds like Gordon Lighthouse on this tune.Jerry's dobro is great.First time I heard Gordon Lightfoot was in concert in St. John's,Nfld when I was studying...........great music in its way and thanks for posting.
stefandurr: couldn't agree more. I am also a Canadian who grew up with tony rice and anyone who knows music and appreciates legendary talent would not call bluegrass "white trash". This song is beautiful and he is one of the best guitar players/ pickers in the business. Keep sharing this music, I love bluegrass.
"Native American" was the first Tony Rice cassette I owned (yeah, I said cassette - I now have it on CD). And the opening song, "Shadows" just spoke to me and I've loved it since. Great video! I'd love to find him doing Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going." -g-
I first ran into Gordon Lightfoot in St.John's ,Newfoundland and his great vocals and songs have influenced Tony Rice as in this piece.Wonderful sound by the Tony Rice Unit here. Thanks for posting.
I see a few comments regarding Tony not mentioning the songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. I have not traced this clip yet, but if it was a taped concert performance in front of a Bluegrass audience, that might explain things. Bluegrass/Traditional music fans already know GL wrote “Shadows”, the way a pop music fan knows who wrote “Satisfaction”. TR fans also would know TR as a Lightfoot stylist.
Alison Krauss does a great version. Look I am a huge Lightfoot fan and I know Rice respects and pays respect to Gordon so yes let it go, doing GL's songs are respect in itself and I don't see where he has tried to take credit for his songs. Thank you Tony and Alison for doing great interpretations
@@riceflatpicking4954 Indeed he did, there was no intentional slight of any sort here, TR would know any fan of his would be well aware of his love and reverence for Canadian singer-songwriters.
When I first heard this song I instantly fell in love with it I now listen to either version all the time. Both are very good and I can’t say which is better but Tony’s is the first one I listened to and so it’s a little bit of my favorite more. And what tv shower concert was this
Tony was so elegant and masterful when playing guitar as Clarence White was. But still we have Jerry. It is a delight to listen Jerry Douglas and Tommy Emmanuel playing together.
❤ you Tony. Desperatly trying to track down a copy of Native American on vinyl. Can anyone point me in a direction. Much love from Canada. We will miss you Tony!
My goodness. Arguing over this song and who wrote it? It's an interpretation of a beautiful song. I've seen him play this a bunch and he always gives credit to GL. Both versions are awesome, both are different, both are beautiful.
Martin Pusser THIS VERSION WAS NOT "BEAUTIFUL!" IT DID NOT DO THE ORIGINAL ANY JUSTICE. AFTER HEARING THIS ATROCITY, PEOPLE WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE THE GREATNESS OF GORDON LIGHTFOOT...
+Bill Last Fuck right off. Gordon Lightfoot gives his approval on tony rice, which means your opinion is worth shit...its people like you you who make music die ...you closed minded piece of shit.
Let me reach out love and touch you, let me hold you for awhile I'd be known around the world, oh how i long to see you smile. There's a shadow on the moon, and the waters here below Do not shine the way they should, and i love ya just in case you didnt know. Let it go, let it happen like it happend once before Its a wicked wind and it chills me to the bone, And if you do not believe me, come and gaze upon the shadow at your door. Won't you lie down by me baby, run your fingers through my hands I'd be known around the town and still i do not understand Is it me or is it you, or the shadow of a dream Is it wrong to be in love, could it be the finest love i've ever seen Set it free, let it happen like it happend once before Its a bitter wind, and it chills me to the bone And if you do not believe me, come and gaze upon the shadow at your door. Please kiss me gently darlin, where the river runs away From the mountains in the springtime, on a blue and windy day Where there's beauty all around, as the shades of night grow deep As the morning stars grow dim, they will find us in the shadows fast asleep.
Gordon Lightfoot is one of the greatest song writers of all time. please, enjoy a version of one of his songs. And lets stop the soccer mob, Hockey, mentality.
Tony is an American treasure but as soon as he started singing I knew it was a Gordon Lightfoot song who is a Canadian treasure himself. Tony's music is awesome and likes a lot of Gordon's writing but imo Gordon does a great job on this folk song as well.
@ShwaZmoto Please don't bring Canadians into this. We are not all bad. It does not matter who wrote the song or who is playing it, I like to just sit back and enjoy these great musician where ever they are from. It's all about the music and that's all. Please no negativity. The world is too full of it already. Have a great day and enjoy these great tunes.
We're so lucky that Tony Rice loved to sing Gordon Lightfoot songs.
Absolutely, and RIP to both legends.
Amen to that
RIP Tony there will never be another. I’m so glad I lived in this world at the same time
Crying tonight listening to this. You will be missed, RIP TR
I can't like your comment more than once or you'd have 1M likes.
This was the first song I thought of and listened to when I heard the news. Glad somebody else did the same
still brings tears to my eyes after all these years. Thanks Tony for making my life less gloomy
And thanks for brining so many Canadian songs to the fore of America and the world. ( misty eyes and very warm heart ). Born and raised in northern Canada, the musical backdrop of my life being here played by the finest performers. Own and play an old D-18 because of TR influence.
Amazing song...... Gets me every time.
Me too man, me too.
I love this rendition. And I love the album it's from. One of my favorite albums. RIP Tony, and RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
Native American is a sublime album.
Flawless musicianship effortlessly presented with pristine clarity, timeless and heartfelt
RIP to Tony and Gordon, two absolute legends. Tony did an album's worth and more of Lightfoot songs but this one always stood out the most to me.
I've seen Doc, Crary, Blake. I've heard thousands of guitar players. There will never be another player like Tony Rice.
Jerry Douglas' solo on this is unbelievable.
Whoever gave this a thumbs-down has the poorest taste in music in all history! This is hands-down one of the best songs Tony ever recorded and absolutely executed flawlessly! Unbelievable Talent.
Written by Gordon Lightfoot . . .

The greatest acoustic guitar player ever, and I love his voice !!!
His music is so deep and rich to me. Im from Henderson Tennessee. Maybe that is why I like his music a lot. Or maybe im just a human.
Beautiful! Tony and Jerry sound so good together. I really miss Tony's voice. Native American is a great record!
RIP... I know now who I'll be listening to all evening...
I'm certain Gordon Lightfoot would never have an objection to Tony doing his songs. He does them justice. and Lightfoot's music is a display in genius all by itself.
just heard of his passing this morning..a sad day in music 😔 RIP Mr Rice
Not one of Gord's better known songs, but it is one of my favorites. Great job guys.
His greatest song, maybe.
@@ConservativeAnthem I think "If You Could Read My Mind" is his greatest.
it does NOT get any better than this!!! Tony & rest of 'em ALL masters!! (Tony -his voice like buttah!)
Listening here in SW Ontario today. First time I've heard this and am loving this interpretation of Mr. Lightfoot's very underrated song.
Pure bliss. Lightfoot's poetry and melody with exquisite coordination of of 5 string instruments playing at the same time. I'm not familiar with bluegrass but can hear and see the intricacy and excellence.
I know this is a really old post...but I'm from Canada and I love Tony Rice. Don't generalize man. This is sophisticated music man.
Don't give a f**k about how old any post is man, great music is great music, and it lasts and lasts, and that says it all.
Beautiful, profound excellence.Wish I had dicovered Tony Rice 50 some years ago
