I am blessed to have met all these great great great musicians several times in person. Sam Bush even signed my daughters mandolin twice and had her come on stage during a workshop when she was 8 years old. These are good folk!
I know wyatt personally, I went to school with his son. and let me tell you, wyatt can melt a guitar fret board. This is a person that has not only seen him play live but many personal experiences.
@@SwampDog1957 he can sing well too, not like tony did in his prime though. Singing definitely separates them more than playing. Not knocking wyatts singing, he’s great it’s just not tony
I have recently discovered Tony Rice. He is so good. This is a great song and love, love to hear him sing one of my favorite songs - Shadows by Gordon Lightfoot. j.l.
Bluegrass Library--THANKS for this! You have to have the COOLEST collection of tapes anywhere! I love being able to hear and see Mr. Rice sing and love being able to see the "Clarence" Martin!
Great bluegrass.......just came back from a bluegrass festival in Rogersville,NB where The Diorion Bros.,Acoustic Horizon and The Boxcars played. Lots of musicians in that part of NB so maybe that's where Clarence White's people come from near the Miramichi River and the towns of Newcastle and Chatham (Miramichi , NB ) are located. Lots of LeBlancs around those parts. Thanks for the trivia. Hollcall.
I think you need to watch the video again... Look around 1:09-1:19 Wyatt took the very first solo that lead into the Mandolin solo. It wasn't the greatest solo I have ever heard but he is cross chording playing in C position while Tony is playing in a D position. The Dobro leads into Tony's solo around 2:17. Wyatt was always content playing along side His Brother and learning from arguably the best acoustic pickers of our generation!
Yes, and Tony loves that guitar so dearly, he dove into his submerged home in Florida and retrieved it. It took about two yrs, but it was finally repaired. He then collaberated with Santa Cruz Guitar Co. and had a replica of this guitar produced. They are gorgeuous and play like a dream. My bandmate in County Switch has two of them and does them justice. We have close to fifty videos on youtube if you want to see his in action.
If taking drugs would help me learning to play like Tony :) I guess that would be the strongest argument I could find for doing it, but fortunately, that doesn't make sense :)
There is a Home Spun tape I for get the name but Tony tells the story of how this guitar was obtained by the Whites for 25 or 35 dollars and how he got it Clarence was From my Town in Ky. I never meet him but I went to school with his daughter Machelle I know several people that I play music with that used to play with Clarence!
There isn't a musician on planet earth more credible than Tony Rice, he is the epitome of credibility. Standing on stage with him gives any player automatic credibility just being seen with him playing music would increase anybody's cred. He is considered the greatest acoustic guitarist in the world. He never sold out to try and achieve more commercial success always true to himself musically speaking most geniuses are that way. Who ever wrote this must not know the correct definition of credible. I remember seeing Leeann Rimes a couple of years ago on an award show and she had Dan Tyminski only on stage with her and though he's a great harmony singer the primary reason she had him with her is the added musical credibility he shines on her. Dan is musically very credible but Tony Rice is infinitely more credible than even Dan Tyminski and Dan would say that himself. As far as popularity goes Tony never had the exposure and large record label distribution of more mainstream artists and to be honest the masses have been so dumbed down by the garbage passed off as music on the radio that they wouldn't know high quality music if it ran over them with a bus.
Tony Rice looks so healthy here; his hair style is so great; the way he wears it now with the long ponytail is not attractive. I loved his voice; so sad what happened to his voice that he had to stop singing.
WYATT'S NO SLOUCH, EITHER. I LIKE THE CLARENCE/ WHITE RY COODER VERSION -- IT'S A LITTLE SLOWER, WITH MORE EMPHASIS ON THE VOCALS. BUT THEY'RE BOTH GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
@Mar10Guitar I agree completely. I'll give Clarence White his due, but think that Tony single-handedly reinvented flatpicking and bluegrass guitar. Great performance!
Johnny Darrell hit with it in June 1969....I was at the DJ Convention in October, saw him perform it,bought his LP and was singing it with my band a few weeks later!
Cultural references from the USA, "a fifth of a Thunderbird refers to 750ml of a fortified wine made cheaply for the down market consumer. 17% ABV, stronger than regular wine, about as strong as Buckfast Tonic wine, its British equivalent......
Key of E - Tony is capoed at second fret, and using D A and G open chord shapes, Wyatt is capoed at the fourth fret, and using C, F and G open chord shapes. Both make it the key of E, it's just a question of what sound you like, and what scales you prefer to do your breaks in.
IMO this is an ***** star bluegrass band. Tony and Wyatt are two great acoustic guitarists along the lines of Clarence White although none mastered Clarence's style completely. In this one Tony is playin a Martin but not positive its Clarence's guitar although he has it.He also plays a Santa Cruz but this is not one.Awesome bluegrass for sure.
you know Tony was/is a good friend of both Jerry Garcia and Dave Grisman, right? and its not really a big secret that both of them smoked a fair amount of dope-and worse. he hasnt made a big secret of the fact that he's done those sorts of things too, so by extension, he's exactly the sort of hippy girly man you're vilifying, pal.
Everybody loves Tony’s lead work but he one of the best rhythm players I have ever heard
No doubt!
Every member of that band was the best in his field. Tony, Wyatt, Mark, Sam and Jerry. RIP Tony.
All star of all star .. no ?
I am blessed to have met all these great great great musicians several times in person. Sam Bush even signed my daughters mandolin twice and had her come on stage during a workshop when she was 8 years old. These are good folk!
This is what they’re playing in heaven.
Tony Rice has such a perfect bluegrass voice. So warm and comforting.
Wyatt Rice is such a killer rhythm picker and as always he is a tasty soloist too.Great song and master playing!!!
He can do a lot more than rhythm.
Saw Tony Rice in the early 90’s - he made it look so easy - R.I.P.
Wyatt rice gotta be up there with some of my favorite guitar players as well! The whole lineup was incredible rest in peace Tony!
Tony Rice, what an awesome talent.
Chef-d'oeuvre of bluegrass music
I know wyatt personally, I went to school with his son. and let me tell you, wyatt can melt a guitar fret board. This is a person that has not only seen him play live but many personal experiences.
He`s an incredible picker .
Personally, I think Wyatt's pickin' is on par with Tony's. I've never heard him sing so it's difficult to compare them beyong their pickin'.
@@SwampDog1957 he can sing well too, not like tony did in his prime though. Singing definitely separates them more than playing. Not knocking wyatts singing, he’s great it’s just not tony
He can melt the fretboard 😂
Can't get enough of this good ol' stuff.
wouldn't you love to hear these ole boys back in their prime together again? i liked them every one.
He will be missed.. awesome musician and just good people
One of the favorites
Great hearing Tony sing, and he and Sam sound good together. Forgot how good Wyatt is too!!! Thanks for posting!!
I have recently discovered Tony Rice. He is so good. This is a great song and love, love to hear him sing one of my favorite songs - Shadows by Gordon Lightfoot. j.l.
The great songwriter Mickey Newbury wrote this song.
what a line up
Well, this just borders on unbelievable. Start with two perfect vocals.
Bluegrass Library--THANKS for this! You have to have the COOLEST collection of tapes anywhere! I love being able to hear and see Mr. Rice sing and love being able to see the "Clarence" Martin!
Damn what a voice!
He's the Gordon Lightfoot of bluegrass! What amazing talent!RIP......
one of the best videos ever!!!
I'll buy it!!
Jerry and Tony sure seem to like playing/singing with each other. Awesome.
Great bluegrass.......just came back from a bluegrass festival in Rogersville,NB where The Diorion Bros.,Acoustic Horizon and The Boxcars played. Really was great watching these guys,as good as it gets. Really is!
Sam and Tony have always worked so sweet togeather vocally.
haha. mullet mania. good one.
i wish tony still had that voice.
Awesome song and pickin. It shows the influence of Clarence White on Tony Rice's pickin style. Thanks for posting.
Consummate bluegrass pickers. On time and soulful. Love this. And look at Sam!
Awesome
I also saw Sam Bush at a show with Emmilous Harris years ago. It was Christmas and held in a remodeled church - what a great show in Charlotte, NC
Love Tony Rice!
I like it, Nice picking too, wow, there all good guitar players,
Always so classy and lot a single error
Take notes children, you'll refer to them later in your journey...
My first thought when I saw this was "wow, does Sam ever look strange clean shaven".
Litterally, who is this imposter playing sams mando..
Looks like Robert Plant
The great ones always make it look easy
Rip Tony. Love you
Great song and awesome musicians. Thanks for the post.
Sweet! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
you should totally give them all makeovers! that would be so awesome and they would look fabulous!
I think you need to watch the video again... Look around 1:09-1:19 Wyatt took the very first solo that lead into the Mandolin solo. Good Stuff great song
That's Clarence's guitar? Sweet! I've become rather obsessed with C.W. over the past few years - I love finding out about connections like this.

Jerry Lee Has a "Killer" version too.
I’m probably going to
Play this song with Steve doneen
This was written by the wonderful songwriter Mickey Newbury.
I don't get why Tony Rice isn't more popular. I know he isn't the most credible of artists, but he plays a mean guitar and sings a good tune.
Wow!!! Where were you in the 1970s and 80s ??? ..could be you weren't around then, as Tony Rice was highly popular and credible!!
There isn't a musician on planet earth more credible than Tony Rice, he is the epitome of credibility. Good sound boys!!
Thanks for pointing out my error. I corrected it.
Some Trivia re. Clarence White . His people were Le Blanc's [ French for White } originally from the Miramachie Valley , New Brunswick Canada.
WYATT'S NO SLOUCH, EITHER. I LIKE THE CLARENCE/ WHITE RY COODER VERSION -- IT'S A LITTLE SLOWER, WITH MORE EMPHASIS ON THE VOCALS. BUT THEY'RE BOTH GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
@Thisnameistaken11 What a mistake.Tony is the most incredible artis ever played the bluegrass music.
This is the 1935 D-28 that Clarence had I have saw this guitar a few times in person ,, these are all time greats this is my kind a music!!
@Mar10Guitar I agree completely. I'll give Clarence White his due, but think that Tony single-handedly reinvented flatpicking and bluegrass guitar.
Great performance!
@BoxCubeSquare There's nothing wrong with the harmonies; they just have his mic turned up a little too loud.
fuckin tony rice! is the man....you cant deny it.
1990's. ??
Jerry sporting the sweet kentucky waterfall!!
Screw all ya'll! Tony's mini mullet rocks the shit. As I type this i am growing a mullet and a mustache.
@FiddleChick96 He didnt smoke his voice away, he has a disease that affects the vocal cords
Sammmyyy
Wyatts solo is sick.

This is not Roy Huskey, Jr on the bass its mark shetz
Anyone know if Tony Rice was the first to record this song?
WongDynasty1969
It's off Mickey Newbury's 1973 album Heaven Help the Child
Pat McLaren You are completely right! It's been covered by so many people by now, but I prefer Tony's version by far!
I always thought it was Johnny Darrell?
Yes, I have Clarence playing this song on the "White Bros., Live in Sweden, I think about 1972.
Johnny Darrell hit with it in June 1969....I was at the DJ Convention in October, saw him perform it,bought his LP and was singing it with my band a few weeks later!

What key is this song in? and chords anyone?
Key of E - Tony is capoed at second fret, and using D A and G open chord shapes, Wyatt is capoed at the fourth fret, and using C, F and G open chord shapes. Both make it the key of E, it's just a question of what sound you like, and what scales you prefer to do your breaks in.
Ha...i miss 80's hair jerry...
Who wrote this song?
Mickey Newberry

What a badass it ant the rap shit
That is Sam Bush allright. But I see how you'd get confused from him not having a beard.
Who in the world are the 27 boneheads who gave this a thumbs down? Lord, their taste must be all in their mouths!
you know Tony was/is a good friend of both Jerry Garcia and Dave Grisman, right? and its not really a big secret that both of them smoked a fair amount of dope-and worse. he hasnt made a big secret of the fact that he's done those sorts of things too, so by extension, he's exactly the sort of hippy girly man you're vilifying, pal.
@lus1981 yes
Micky Newbury
Sum of you did not
I just heard Jessi Colter sing this song, I thought sounded much better
They play as good
........ as ........
their barber is bad
Hey, Urfaceisloburn, you're just jealous, otherwise you'd not make such evil-toned comments. GAG!!!!
Raise your hand if you're here from hearing Eleven Hundred Springs version
Pay attention Andrew, Wyatt doesn't play a solo
People who call names like "Homo" and "Homophobes" come from the same slime pit. How about not calling names at all? It's so "Third Grade".
Sam Bush is great, but he sounds pretty lousy singing harmonies.
