Billy Strings might have the chance to make a similar significant contribution over time (not the way he dresses lol!), but nobody will replace Tony Rice. He was the first of lead guitar and vocal in a major bluegrass band. Hero to many, me included.
I love how Sam Bush always looks like he's having the greatest time of his life playing with the best of the best. And I don't blame him. Who wouldn't be ecstatic to share the same stage with these legends. And to be one at that!
RUclips is like a time machine. Watching performers do their thing 20 years ago. How young, slim and handsome they look. You never die on RUclips but live forever in the videos of past performances.

RIP Tony Rice the finest guitarists in bluegrass as a boy I grew up listening to your music what a unique style you had wonderful memories of my childhood when I hear this man play!!! you will be missed
The best version of this tune I've ever heard, but what a joy to see the likes of Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings, et al, continue the traditions of what are -- without question -- some of the best bluegrass musicians to ever play the music.
Just can’t stop watching this over and over. Such an awesome groove, and all those solos playing with so much restraint. So much discipline to make it look so easy.
Well the best guitarist. The best fiddle player. The best dobro player. Top three Mando player. One of the top three bassist. And Tony singing. Yes, the very best!
I still am I. I tried to explain to my daughter how much bluegrass means to me. Rest in Peace brother I know you are in a better place and will be missed.
I’m learning this song and it will always amaze me how Tony could get the tone and sound out of a box of wood like none other! Some ppl are just born to do it. I’m sure glad I lived at the same time as Tony so I could constantly be amazed at how simple, yet extraordinary, his playing was, and will always be!
@oldcremona Hartford had cancer for the longest time, many fans did not know this, he carried on as if nothing was wrong. He had his glitches, as we all do, but was one of the finest humans I've ever met on this planet. His achievements and contributions are countless. Great video with some very talented people on that stage. Wish John Hartford was still here on earth spreading his works.
Awesome musicians all.Tony Rice is a great guitar picker as well as other strings and has a wonderful soundin guitar and great vocals in this tune. Thanks for the post.
I just happened onto this video, and while scrolling thru the comments, found out he died Christmas Day,2020.IMHO,the greatest flatpicker that ever lived[apologies to Doc Watson].Introduced by the late John Hartford[he wrote Gentle on My Mind, and many other songs].R.I.P. to both of them-and thanks for the music, guys! If i could only have 1 bluegrass album,i'd have Tony Rice Sings and Plays Bluegrass.
I used to listen to Bluegrass music and songs over short-wave radio from Kurdistan when I was a kid. I never thought one day I'll be visiting the country of origin of this great music genre. It's so native and genuine, reminds me of old classic Kurdish songs. They are so free spirited!
I always catch people by surprise when I point out there are no drummers or percussionists in the core of this music genre. It's a testament to implied rhythm.
So glad to have found this gem tony rice and John Hartford... Forerunner to the great Dan tyminski and union station 10 years before man of constant sorrow... Beautifull
The more I watch & Listen to "THE" Tony Rice , "The" Mark O'Connor, and the one and only "THE" Jerry Douglas, the more I understand why so many people held and hold them in High Esteem. It is very special to me because it was way back when I learned the Banjo from Bobby Horton and flat-pickin' from Glenn Tolbert. I kept hearing about a teenager winning all these fiddle contests...her name was Allison Krauss. Thanks to RUclips I can enjoy hearing the very best. I bet Chet Atkins would be scratching his head, as he watched and heard Tony Rice playing and thinking, " How do you do all that and with just one pick...show me again...very slowly please". :-)
"DOC" Chet only used a thumb pick. He knew plenty of great guitar players. He played with most of them too. He never claimed to be the best but he was one of the greats.
It sure is nice to hear Tony singing again. He had one of the all time finest bluegrass voices until he lost his voice about twenty years ago. Damn but I miss the American Music Shop.
Im guilty as Tim Knapp! pure class doesnt even begin to describe Tony Rice, as a Mandolin player my first listen to him was on the first David Grisman Quintet album all those years ago, string band music took a big leap forward when he launched into the scene
Filled with talent all these bluegrass musicians but I especially love the sound comin from Tony's ole Martin guitar once the tool of Clarence White's fantastic pickin and he a descendent of the LeBlanc's in New Brunswick, Canada where bluegrass still thrives today !
I met Tony and Watt way back in 80 I saw that Martin sitting there all that pearl inlay and all asked him to play it It was tonys birthday He said damn son your good I was living in Boone NC Now I'm in Nothern Cal farming waiting for the manifest GOD BLESS TONY Don't let your deal go down
Who else is binging on Tony Rice after his passing yesterday? What a legend. Fantastic picker and always dressed and presented him self with class.
Billy Strings might have the chance to make a similar significant contribution over time (not the way he dresses lol!), but nobody will replace Tony Rice. He was the first of lead guitar and vocal in a major bluegrass band. Hero to many, me included.
@@bethleesongwriter7228 Yes, I've been enjoying the heck out of Billy!
yes... binging.... I have an affinity for bluegrass guitar music and that puts Tony at the top of the list.
Tony was pure class, he will be missed. I got to see him back in 1977, I don't think i knew then how great he was.
Yes sir.
I had the great pleasure of meeting tony and playing on the same stage with him at a festival in memphis back in 1990 . . . God Bless . . .
I love how Sam Bush always looks like he's having the greatest time of his life playing with the best of the best. And I don't blame him. Who wouldn't be ecstatic to share the same stage with these legends. And to be one at that!

Remembering Tony Rice. One of the best. A musician of unique style and consequence. You are missed. RIP - 🙂🎼🎄✨️
Probably the most talent I have ever seen on one stage all at the same time.
Tony played with many great musicians, but I think this bunch here (plus Ricky, Bela, and Vassar) were my favorites.

Marc O`Connor is the best.
Check out Billy Strings
RIP Tony Rice the finest guitarists in bluegrass as a boy I grew up listening to your music what a unique style you had wonderful memories of my childhood when I hear this man play!!! you will be missed
The finest guitarist PERIOD!
RIP Tony Rice. I'm glad I had the pleasure to see and hear you at the Birchmere in Alexandria VA.
The best version of this tune I've ever heard, but what a joy to see the likes of Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings, et al, continue the traditions of what are -- without question -- some of the best bluegrass musicians to ever play the music.
Took my father to see Tony in Lexington KY One of my best memories !!!
Good thing we still have video's like this, so we can hear Tony's voice, and awsome guitar playing any time we want to
Thank God for RUclips it will keep Tony’s remarkable talent and music in our hearts forever…
This is the pinnacle of bluegrass. I click on this tune every few weeks and each time I'm amazed by how good it sounds.

I find it very hard to believe there will ever be a guitar gentleman as Tony Rice. God bless
Just can’t stop watching this over and over. Such an awesome groove, and all those solos playing with so much restraint. So much discipline to make it look so easy.
RIP Brother Tony.. There will never be another! My Hero
RIP Tony. 1951 - 2020. Such a cool guy....

We lost a bluegrass legend. Hopefully the last kick in the nuts for me in 2020. We love you Tony RIP
What a line-up. A couple of the best of the best!
You don't find better music than this.
Every time I see this video I have to watch it and I can’t help but listen and smile from ear to ear 😁
Billy Strings is amazing, but there will never be another TR.
A great gentleman of (bluegrass) guitar has passed. So much good music to listen to... Fare thee well!
Tony made an amazing contribution to bluegrass music and to us fans!

The very best for sure.....................If I go to heaven when I die, I would like to "sit in" and play with this bunch.
Tony Rice rocks the GUITAR & the MOUSTACHE LIKE A BOSS!!
Of course he was a widely acclaimed guitar virtuoso but his classic bluegrass vocals always did it for me too.

That's some darn good stuff!
Best of the best was Tony. Just an unbelievable sad loss

What a wonderful talent. I'm sorry for his passing. One of the greatest guitarists of bluegrass.
opinions differ but i see 85 folks that dont know greatness when heard

Sam Bush has become one of my favorite musicians just within the past few days. The video of them playing nine pound hammer live is awesome.
Break at 3:01 is a "how-to" clinic. Good luck playing it that clean and with that tone. Masterpiece.
Sooo beautiful, thank you for this!
So good to hear his sweet voice on this song!
This is my favorite version of this song!
The bluegrass lead voice of all time. Nobody near him

Yes, often forgotten, great vocalist as well as singular guitarist

Bluegrass is Bluegrass - well played it's always awesome. Country has a thousand faces, one of them being Bluegrass!
Wow. Mr. Rice is the only one on that stage I haven’t seen before he had to quit playing. I hope the best for him.
Im guilty as Tim Knapp! pure class doesnt even begin to describe Tony Rice, as a Mandolin player my first listen to him was on the first David Grisman Quintet album all those years ago, string band music took a big leap forward when he launched into the scene

Tony Rice is the Chet Atkins of the bluegrass guitar. He picked up the guitar and truly mastered the instrument. He's an amazingly talented person.
Filled with talent all these bluegrass musicians but I especially love the sound comin from Tony's ole Martin guitar once the tool of Clarence White's fantastic pickin and he a descendent of the LeBlanc's in New Brunswick, Canada where bluegrass still thrives today !
