There's been many times in my life when I'm reflecting on something that didn't work out, and these lyrics come right into my mind, "Picking up the pieces of my sweet shattered dreams... " Well thanks to the words that follow I can never stay stuck dwelling on my misery. "I wonder how the old folks are tonight?" It makes me think forward instead of backwards. Thank you Gordon!

I think it will be a very long time for so many of his generation and their children to forget Gordon.
I got out of the Air Force in 1972; and somehow got turned on to this man. I bought his first music book,I believe the one with the brown cover and his face on it,chewing pn a dandelion.[I played it to shreds, though I still have it].I learned many of those songs. I met him backstage at Tanglewood in Western Massachusetts . I sat in back of the outdoor structure. He was late for the show. There is a wide-open field in back and I watched his car pull up way off across the field. About five women jumped out of the car, all carrying bouquets of flowers. They headed for the front of the theatre. He made straight for me where I was sitting on a bench. He sat down next to me and handed me an oil can beer;Fosters, I believe. He said;"Here, I don't really need this". I was an awestruck 22 year old and don't remember much else, except that he was a little tipsy.
Oddly enough, I remember there were not that many people at the show. I sat down front with the women who were still carrying the flowers. I remember they were all strikingly beautiful! He put on an amazing performance, not missing a single note! I was not an autograph type of person, but I have always cherished our meeting. I went on to learn many more of his songs. He and another man named Bob Dylan changed my life for sure!
I became a street singer at the end of that summer.😮
One time at a jam session with friends, we were stumped with which song we would play next. I said,"I know, let's play Early Morning Rain. From then on it became a regular at our jam sessions.
He is and will always be a great one!
I had had a premonition the week before when I heard that he had canceled a number of shows , that he would be leaving us soon 😢. My favorite song these days is Cotton Jenny. It just seems to me that love should be that way, with a woman waiting for her man to come home from work, not caring if he will ever be a rich man; a woman to rub his feet and love him!
Damn! It's really a shame that the good ones can't live forever. (I wish I had kept that oil can.😅. I didn't have another oil can beer until I was in my sixties!
If I was a rich man (and I am a poor man), I would have flown to his boyhood church and said "So long ol' pal ...See you soon."Damn,... crying again."Beyond the wild misty mountains" and "Softly",..."The Way I Feel is like a robin...and ,..a letter from a girl, who took the time to write to her 'lovin' man, somewhere in the night. She sent me a railroad ticket...". That was always a moneymaker for me on the street, because it is upbeat, I believe.
    Peace all.
Ps. I once played The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, not missing a single verse., AT A BLUEGRASS SHOW, at Thomas Point,Maine.Well,I ,igjt have skipped a couple...😅😅 Come on now,.. you know what it's like around those campfires at a picking party!

Wow what a classic! There is no one today like Gordon Lightfoot! He is a North American treasure.

Yeah, "North American" as in CANADIAN. People (including you) would drop the "North" if he were from the USA :)
