Thanks for the video! I wouldn't have thought to clean up my hellebores now, especially after our -15 degree weather over the weekend but thanks to you I got outside yesterday and cleaned mine up. How great to see the new growth that was coming up under the leaves. This is only my second year with hellebores so I'm excited to see how they do this year.
Hi Tracy! I do mine around valentines day each year. I little earlier this year because we've had such a mild winter. Wouldn't you know that this past weekend we had a polar vortex and, it was -5. I took a look and they still look fine. Some of the foliage that was emerging got zapped. But I'm sure the dose of fertilizer will help push new foliage as soon as temps level out again. But yes, they really are amazing in that they are so cold hardy they push put new growth while still in mid winter! They are beautiful plants. Enjoy! 🌱
I have never seen Hellebores in any plant store, it’s only in the last couple years I’ve learned about them through u tube videos. Thank you for this lesson on Hellebores, I’m gonna keep looking for them this spring when our big nursery opens.
I got three at Home Depot as well and I was able to put them outside as soon as I purchase them but I do live in North Carolina so far so great. And the price was only $14.97. Which was quite shocking since like Steph stated in her video, they are normally 2 to 3 times more than that price.
Hi Steph from the UK. Great video on hellebores. I took some seeds from a neighbours plant last year and popped them in some garden soil (not compost) and left them in the shaded part of my garden throughout summer autumn and forgot about them. However a few weeks ago whilst clearing the garden I found them and now have approx 50 seedlings. I’ve repotted them up as per advise from The Horti-Culturalists channel and they are thriving. It might take a few years but hopefully I will have plenty of new plants to share with people. Fingers crossed as patience isn’t my strong point.
Hi there, and welcome from the UK! How wonderful, and exciting that the seeds germinated!! From what I have read they can be difficult to germinate from seed as they like moist conditions etc. That is so fun that you have some many baby seedlings. I'm sure whomever you gift them too will be thrilled to have them. Enjoy!!
I love your new hellebore Steph. They are such great plants. I've never seen hellebore at my local Home Depot, but my local Trader Joe's typically offer them at a very affordable price.
Hi Sue! Yes, TJ's does also get them occasionally and I've seen other gardeners post such pretty ones. I live a bit away from a TJ's, but travel there occasionally for some goodies. This was the first time I've seen them at a box store. I was thrilled. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so very much Blake! its been a fun ride, and I'm ready to keep going. So fun sharing my garden with other gardeners. I appreciate the support.
Excellent and informative video. I appreciate how you explained the need for hardening off. It's a good thing to remember when tempted to buy spring plants before it's really spring as these plants are grown in greenhouses and not ready to be put in the landscape yet.
Hi there! They do take a bit to really shine. I have had my more established grouping of 6 since 2018 and they are doing the best. The others I got in 2021 and they are still small and I only get a couple blooms each. Hoping they continue to survive and in another year or 2 look just as full and beautiful as the others.
Steph if I don’t find your video in the morning I keep checking for it through the day I love your video’s both gardening and cooking. I love the way you do your video’s taking your time to show us and not hurrying from one plant to another and in a very pleasing voice. Thanks for sharing your beautiful garden.🥰

Hi Steph, after watching this video I went to my local Home Depot I bought 5 of hellebores 3 pink 1 purple and 1 white. I left them in the garage so they’ll be ready for the ground. Thank you for the information
Hi Jackie! These get pockets of morning sun since the tree cover is gone over late Fall & Winter. Also, my more established hellebore have many more blooms than the newer ones.
Very nice video for early February. Lenten Roses can be seen/found in my area but not to very popular. Yours look gorgeous! I am eager to see them in full bloom.
Thanks for your informative video. I purchased my first Hellebore last Spring, planted it in the Fall, and noticed a couple buds about two weeks ago. I'm sure it will be small until established, looking forward to seeing the blooms. I also purchased three very small plants from a grower which should arrive next week. I am in NE PA in Zone 7A. Will be watching more of your videos, have a great weekend!!
Hi Linda, Yes they take a little bit to establish. My first grouping of 6 I planted in 2018, those are doing the best. The newer group of 4 I planted in 2021, those are still small and don't bloom much. Hoping they continue to live and eventually bloom just as prolifically. Thanks for watching, and hope you had a great weekend!
Those hellebore are so pretty,,, love the wedding party series,,, you got me hooked on them and will try some this Spring in my shady area!!! Thanks Steph
Hi Steph, your Hellebores are looking good! I have three of them, my white is bursting with buds and blooms, I am looking forward to a new one I got last yr that hasn't bloomed yet called Shot Gun Wedding. I'd like to find Mother of the Bride, it's a beauty. I love how long these plants stay in "bloom", they are beautiful and tough. I am in zone 9b, I've been checking my HD, not in stock so far. Thanks for this video!
Hi Heidi! They really are gorgeous and really long blooming 🥰 oh shot gun wedding is so pretty!! I just looked it up. I hope you are able to find some at your local home depot. Thanks for watching.
This is the first time I have seen one of your videos. I bought two last year and they survive our artic blast, zone 8, they are blooming beautifully this week, so I really enjoy this video.
I love hellebores! I only have a couple and would love to have more. I wish I could be in my garden. In the last week we got 8 inches of snow. Now, we have -3 temperature. I'm just living through you. Thanks again for the great video.
Hi Tina, This weekend we received an artic blast/polar vortex. Most of them are still fine, but a couple look worst for the wear. Its ok, its still early and I'm hopeful the fertilizer will help them rebound. Thanks for watching, and stay warm!
I cannot believe you are in a lower zone than me, so much green! I am in zone 7a Utah, covered with snow for weeks and single digit temperatures. We are having a crazy winter. Love your videos, especially the ones when you visit garden centers.
Hi Johanna! Oh I can't believe it myself. I'm so sorry your getting so much snow and having a hard winter. We normally have had a couple of snow storms by now. Its been so mild! Although this weekend we're in for a -5 degrees overnight tonight into tommorow! Brrr!! I love to take you shopping! Stay tuned its a regular part of my channel so I'll be taking you on lots more shopping trips. Thanks for your comment, and for watching.
Steph, love your channel. I found my first hellebore a few years ago at HD also but I paid $30 for a 2 gallon. I’m going tomorrow to see if I can find another for less like you did. Also last year l saw lots of ppl on YT saying they found them at Trader Joe’s for like $10.
Hi there, Thank you so much for your kind words. Wow a 2 gallon, that seems like a great price for that size plant. Typically our local nurseries sell a small 1 gallon around that price. I don't have a TJ's close by, but yes, some have found pretty ones there. I hope you are able to find some more. Thanks for watching.
Hi Steph !! I am so jealous that you got them for that prize . The garden centers in my town usually sell them for 40-50$ thank you so much for this video
It was such a great find, I agree. Our nurseries charge at least double as well, i'm sure its because of how unique they are and typically hard to find. Our box stores have never carried them. This is the first year I've come across them there. Hope your able to find some at some point.
I've used the S.T.U.N (shear, utter, and total neglect) technique on our Helebores 🤣. I need to do better, especially in the winter. You've motivated me to do some TLC with them. Yours look wwwwaaaaayyyyyy better than ours !! Thanks for the motivation, Steph :) Cheers J&C 🌱🌱🌱
lol, Sounds like a solid method, and I swear if i neglect things they do better!! Especially true when it comes to Roses. I have the worst "black thumb" with those, unless its the knockout roses. Those thrive on neglect in commercial parking lots ;)
Well now I need a Hellebore or three! Yours are beautiful and I appreciate the great info on caring for them. Are they drought tolerant at all? I would need to put them in an area where I’d have to pack water to them.
Hi Pat, Oh they are so beautitful and addicting! Yes they are drought tolerant once established! From google: "Hellebores are renowned for their tolerance of drought and neglect, although they truly thrive when grown in a moist, but well-drained soil. They are very sensitive to poor drainage, so be sure your soil drains well." Thanks for watching.
Hi, Steph. Another great video. Very informative. Love your hellebores, especially the wedding party series ones. I have one Lenten rose that I bought at Trader Joe's about four years ago, with no name tag. It is a beautiful specimen and like yours, already has buds. Need to check out my Home Depot this weekend for another one. Thank you!
Hi Jolie! Thank you so much for your kind words. I bought a white one around the holidays one year at TJ's (a christmas rose), but it didn't make it. I hadn't acclimated it properly before planting it out. Learned my lesson so now I'm taking a good amount of time to get these acclimated. The wedding party ones are really beautiful. This is the 3rd season with them in my garden so I'm hopeful for lots of blooms
Your hellebore are gorgeous! I love mine too. I have had them in my shade garden in Portland Or zone 8b for over 10 years. So beautiful. I cut off all of the foilage every year and they bloom like crazy every year. Mine reseed readily by dropping seeds near the mother plant. I have given away so many babies. I try to cut off the flower bract stems before they set seed so they don't take over. I wonder if your hybrids are less likely to reseed?
Hi Shelley, Thank you so much for your comment. So fun that your hellebor readily self seed. Such a gift when beautiful plants give us more beautiful plants
Will definitely be checking Home Depot and Lowe’s this weekend for Hellebore, at that price I’m loading up. I currently have a collection of about 20, I’m in zone 8a Atlanta. So, few of them are quite advanced!
Hi, I’m a newbie! I’m also in zone six I’m in norristown outside of Philadelphia where about are you? I look forward to seeing more from your channel much luck and blessings to you!!!!
Hi Steph! Gardening from Zone 6 Kansas City area. My True Love seemed to take longer to establish but finally bloomed last year. I’m excited for new blooms! Question about your tulip containers- I have some potted up in the unheated garage. When do you put your tulip pots outside in February? Do you wait for favorable weather or just look at the calendar? Do you ever bring them back inside if weather turns wet? Thanks for your video! You reminded me to fertilize the helebores this weekend !
Hi there! I'll be bringing my containers out this week. I would say if your having a polar vortex this weekend like we are (-5 below) tonight and tommorow, I would wait a few days until it gets to more seasonable temps. By Sunday were supposed to be back up to the 40's so I'll bring them out. Once they're out, there out. No more bringing them back in. If you dont have water in the forcast when you bring them out, give them some water. Then let the weather take care of them (rain snow etc). Have a great weekend!
Love your planting advice and live in a 6b zone that's ravaged by deer, planning my 2023 seed and plants for this year and wanted to ask which plants in your experience haven't been eaten by deer/ deterrent? #about to convert by garden to chili peppers
Hi there, I just laughed when I read your comment about chili peppers. Imagine they eat those?! They will try anything, especially the young ones. I'm afraid to say which they don't seem to bother, because as soon as the words leave my lips they will eat them! But mostly, they stay away from spruce evergreens, and my neighbor has a beautiful living fence of green giant arborvitae, and they tend to stay away. They also don't favor junipers, mugo pine, or lambs ear. I belive its anything fuzzy or prikly they stay away from. However, they did snack on my new holly. I spend lots of money on repellants and time spraying during the growing season. It's a full-time job.
@@HookedandRooted just saw your deer video and your right, deer will eat anything if they are hungry enough, ask my (6a deer country) parents' who have chewed down evergreens. Will definitely follow your tips, thanks for the great advice.
Hi Pam, They will stay in bloom for while, but yes, they will eventually pitter out just like all other perrenials. However, their blooms do last a really long time. They age beautifully. Then you still have the foliage.
I would wait until you have hardened them off over the course of 3-4 weeks. If you can hold off until Spring, that would be great also. They will indicate when they need water when the foliage and blooms start to droop.
Hi, It was in the Southcoast Area of MA. 1.5 hrs away from Framingham. I went there again this weekend, and they didn't have any. However, someone mentioned that its possible they might get another shipment before valentines day. So maybe just check in again? Hope you find some! This was the first time I've ever seen them there.
Thats terrible Jules!! There supposed to be deer resistant, but they'll eat anything really. For as many deer as I have, they eat alot, but thankfully stay away from these.
Hi Sue, Its pretty sandy and loamy. Each time I plant I do amend with some compost and topsoil. My soil has improved tremendously over the years just from amendments and gardening in it. This area is also moist, but well draining as its on a slope.
@@HookedandRooted i really loved how your Gomphrenas looks this past summer. I wanted to try that in my garden, but i have very heavy clay soil. I might give it a try anyway.
Hi Maria! Oh I'm so sorry there weren't anymore. I was in there today and they told me they had only gotten about 6 and I bought 2, the only 2 I could find. BUT, the girl in the plants told me its possible they may get some more before valentines day. Fingers crossed! if I notice any, i'll let you know. Thanks for watching!

Hi Joseph, only 44 days! we can do it.
Like others said time for trip to Home Depot 😊. Have seen that at Trader Joe’s and last our Grocery store Shoprite had them.

@@HookedandRooted Perfect! Thank you for your help!! Enjoy your weekend and stay warm!
Great 👍 channel
Thank you so much!!
@@HookedandRooted you are welcome
Will your new Hellebores keep blooming after you plant them? Or will they be done because they were blooming so early?
Hi Pam, They will stay in bloom for while, but yes, they will eventually pitter out just like all other perrenials. However, their blooms do last a really long time. They age beautifully. Then you still have the foliage.
I am in NH. When could you plant the hardened off roses?
I would wait until you have hardened them off over the course of 3-4 weeks. If you can hold off until Spring, that would be great also. They will indicate when they need water when the foliage and blooms start to droop.
Do you mind sharing which Home Depot had them? I checked Framingham but they had nothing.
Hello, greetings from me, Indonesian
Welcome from Indonesia!! Hope you enjoyed. Have a nice day!
Yes, thank you, have a nice day too
Also, the deer eat our hellebores down to the ground.
Thats terrible Jules!! There supposed to be deer resistant, but they'll eat anything really. For as many deer as I have, they eat alot, but thankfully stay away from these.
what kind of soil do you have?
Hi Sue, Its pretty sandy and loamy. Each time I plant I do amend with some compost and topsoil. My soil has improved tremendously over the years just from amendments and gardening in it. This area is also moist, but well draining as its on a slope.
@@HookedandRooted i really loved how your Gomphrenas looks this past summer. I wanted to try that in my garden, but i have very heavy clay soil. I might give it a try anyway.
✔🌹🙂
Hi Robyn!! Have a great weekend!
@@HookedandRooted You too Steph - every Friday I say Yay - one more week down and another week closer to Spring♥
The plural of hellebore is hellebores.
Thank you Peggy! I have also heard it called Helleborus. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, I went to the Home Depot after watching your video but it was already too later they were all gone. ❤️🌿🌱🪴
