i believe my camaro has the flowmaster and that one sounds very similar. i like the flowmaster better. But either way it’s still awesome. as long as it’s loud when you rev it 👍🏻
Wow. Still don't understand how people can just let 5 year old sports cars sit. Even if they pass away or get sick and their family left it. It's not really a project at 5 years old, drive it or sell it. Glad you're fixing it up now though
Flowmasters sound great especially on chevy motors, but you will get better performance from the Magnaflow's open design. The Flowmaster will also resonate through the interior a lot more which may have been cool when we where 17 but it's pretty fkn annoying now.
I have a magnaflow on my Roc for over 35 yeats. 3 inch pipe with both pipes exit on left side. Love the mellow sounds. Sounds like a 60s vette when going through gears.
My car is a 350 with the Flowmaster on it and it sounds just like your 305. The rattling is some sort of inherit sound produced by the muffler mine makes the same rattling.
Thank you for the exhaust comparison the way you did it. It helped me choose which exhaust I want. I was having a hard time deciding because Camaros will never sound as aggressive as a Mustang does, so this made my choice easier.
The rattle noise just sounds like the exhaust pipe moving. I had a car that developed a similar tone after I removed a hangar. It eventually devolved into a leak, that's when I got the tick tick tick and a generally more raspy tone. Great video
Thank you so much for this video. It was exactly what I have been looking for. Jut for reference and anyone else that is looking at this the actual muffler in the flowmaster american thunder exhaust kit that he is using is the 80s series designed for the 3rd gen Camaros.
thanks for the info I was wondering what it was called, That's awesome it was designed for 3rd gens. on my car I have this same muffler I posted some sound clips it sounds just like it
Hey man, that rattle is likely a heat shield that the exhaust is rubbing against. If you have a leak, it's really hard to hear on the videos. The rattle (to me) seems like one of those rabbits that might drive you crazy, and trust me I UNDERSTAND THIS with these cars. I've owned a 3rd gen since the late 90s, both 85 IROCs. Love your stuff though, really enjoy watching someone else struggle through the same things i do :)
Well done great video. Flowmaster are more for 17 kids who have no clue what a great, deep bass exhaust sound like. Sounds great, probably can even feel the ground vibrate from the little 305.
Nice video! Great breakdown and explanation! Thank you for posting this. I do LOVE Flowmaster but MF is really growing on me. Wife and I have ‘92 Firebird with same motor you have.
The best sounding factory cat back replacement was the edelbrock that was on my 87 iroc l98 ....sadly I patched rust holes 3-4 times before it got too bad to mess with I then ordered a hot rod 2.5" mandrel bent pipe kit for diy dual exhaust and put true dual 2.5 pipes hung tight to rocker rails exiting in front of rear tires angled out just shy of body.....no cats hooker headers it sounded great with lt4 hot cam and just loud enough easing around to set off car alarms when pulling into parking lots and loud but not obnoxiously loud when mashing pedal. Building a high end superram/fast xfi 383 afr head engine w/supercharger & going to build new replica of old exhaust but with stainless pipe,Doug's 1-3/4" headers & cherry bomb vortex mufflers(for power gain & whatever it sounds like is what it is)
Did you have to put on a custom exhaust hanger on the drivers side for the Magnaflow? On the stock setup it's on the tail pipe but since your tailpipe is shorter now....
Its not an exhaust leak, its the pipe rattling because its not true dual. Unfortunately with the y-pipe its too much sound and it tends to rattle. The only fix for that is true dual. > : )
@beardedreviews and I used to have an 02 Z-28 with two single chamber Flowmasters attached to a duel straight pipe with Eldelbrock headers and a F.A.S.T. intake manifold. Nasty sounding car. Was absolutely NOT noise compliant.
Idk of it's a exhaust leak I think you are right the second time I think it's a hanger or something rattling . But a spray bottle and some soapy water you will know if you got a leak
When you did a cat delete, did you have to retune the engine or anything?? Because ik the cat back alone won’t make it as loud as I want, and I really want to delete the cat but not have any issues
I didn't do a retune after taking the cat off. But that's not saying I shouldn't have. I'm no expert in exhaust. Car ran fine, but maybe it could run better if I tuned it?
@@beardedreviews ohh okay!! I’m hearing a lot of mixed things about the retune, some say I don’t have to retune and others say the engine will start to run bad, but if ur engine runs fine, a retune is probably optional!
@@numbers7889 Yea I would say it's totally optional. Also I went with like 3 inch exhaust, when I should have gone with 2.5 inch to keep proper back pressure. I think with 2.5 instead of 3" exhaust you would be even better than my setup. I am going to change mine to 2.5 when I do my 5.7 TPI swap
@@beardedreviews I also have a 3 inch exhaust in it, although the tailpipes are 2.5, so maybe the back pressure won’t change as much if it was 3 inches all the way, keep us updated on that swap! I’m very interested in doing one as well, maybe even an LS swap if I have the money and guts to do it
Cool, have you seen the magnaflow xmod system yet ? If not you should check out my buddy racer X vid on them, it is the latest system from MF and is really cool because you can change the sound of it with the parts that they give you and are interchangeable as a system. They are a little expensive at 3k, but they are basically three systems in one and go from mellow to medium and then radical and are awesome. I considered some for my Challenger SRT8, but I already had a good system on it that I just did a couple of years ago and didn't want to replace them. They sound awesome, they're SLP loudmouths and are the best bang for the buck on the market at 7 bill's
Man they really r . I seen some h.o. Ones that were pretty close to some 350s out there . Only reasoning that makes me feel like ayy they sum fun atleast lol
Ive had both on third gens. Everyone runs flows and magnas are too quiet for me. When i had my 305 tbi i ran the Borla 14888 and ive ran Borla 14464 as well. Those catbacks seem to sound the best for these cars other than SLP or GMMG. Also headers are a must. HKR 2460 are a great option. Currently looking at some catbacks as ive been cammed/straight piped lt1 in a 92 RS and im getting too old for that anymore.
Both sound very similar. If you have the extra cash, buy Borlas. They're more than double the price, but Borla sounds much better than both. Magnaflows are quieter, but Flowmasters sound very loud, deep, and throaty.
Flowmaster does not flow nearly as good as the magnaflow. It is a tin can with air baffles while as you said the magnaflow is straight through. Much better flow with the magna
i believe my camaro has the flowmaster and that one sounds very similar. i like the flowmaster better. But either way it’s still awesome. as long as it’s loud when you rev it 👍🏻
Got a barn find 1985 with a 305 in it. Has sat since 1990. Been a journey all summer to get it running. You have been a great resource. Keep it up!

I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. You the man!
Got dynomax super turbos on my 87 Firechicken. I checked out all the different tones and that was my all time favorite.
Just picked my 3rd gen project, hoping you keep these videos coming!
Yea I have more coming! They slow down in the winter but I get a few done when I heat up the garage and get some work done
Flowmasters sound great especially on chevy motors, but you will get better performance from the Magnaflow's open design. The Flowmaster will also resonate through the interior a lot more which may have been cool when we where 17 but it's pretty fkn annoying now.
Nope! The flow master will out perform a glass pack all day
Magnaflow has a quality sound 👌
This is the exact video I’ve been looking for. Been watching you since I got my iroc z like 8 months ago, love ur videos
Thanks man, I have a 3rd Gen Camaro myself, and needed confirmation that mag aglow is the way to go.
I have a magnaflow on my Roc for over 35 yeats. 3 inch pipe with both pipes exit on left side. Love the mellow sounds. Sounds like a 60s vette when going through gears.
I love the 3rd gen Camaros but running exhaust on them are a pain in the ass

My 1986 IROC Z28. It has a 350 carbureted block & no cat. 3 inch from y pipe back into a flowmaster 40 series exhaust.
Love your Camaro videos
thanks so much man! I'm doing a video summarizing all the mods here soon on the channel
Love the vids. I got flowmaster on my third gen, but plan to switch to magnaflow eventually. Also, Boiler up yo!!
Flow master with the cat removed is epic , the mag not so much, but better flowing.
yea everybody likes different exhaust notes
good video bro I also have a third gen and installed the magnflow last year
I have true duals with no cats and true dual flowmasters but it’s super loud and want a mellow tone.
Try Borla Atak mufflers
Nice upgrade! Sounds great!
I actually love the flowmaster its the one i wanna get for my 92 but i also wanted to try some popular exhaust called black widow
I havent heard of that one yet. I'll look into it!

Yea I'm thinking about going true dual when I do my 350 TPI swap
Magnaflow much nicer, and probably what I will do when I take my stock off my 88 Iroc.
Great comparison video. MF sounds a little more sophisticated to my ears, perhaps closer to a OEM tone.
Yea I personally like the magnaflow alot better
GOOD VIDEO.definetely im going for the flowmaster fo my Rs Maro
I was going to say the rattle is the Gas tank heat shield.

I want to get a cutout valve for mine, That way when I'm driving around at night i can be somewhat quiet. Otherwise, straight piped loud.
Chambered mufflers sound better than packed mufflers on small block chevys imo. But its YOUR car, you need to be happy with the way it sounds

Magnaflow for the win! Flow master is good if your number one priority is loud.
Yea flow master is just plain loud. I like the magnaflow tone so much better
I have a magnaflow exhaust on my 1991z28 and they sound sooo much better then the flow master exhaust I had on it
