I love how in the books, Blackfish says there's no shame in missing his shot. Blackfish even mentions when when their father died, Hoster missed shooting their father's boat as well.
This is one of the many examples of how the beautiful story George wrote was ruined by the show's writers. Edmure might not be the brightest or most glorious of George's characters but unlike in the show he's not a stumbling punchline and his uncle is a practical veteran of war, not the unfeeling prick that he is in the show. In the books Edmure keeps missing because he cannot stop crying, this is a man who has just lost his father who he loved to the bottom of his heart. Even though it's against tradition his uncle takes the bow from his hands as a kindness even if it might stain his nephew honor as it's the lesser of the two evils. It's a sorrowful scene, not a ridicule of mourning.

Honestly one of my least favorite scenes in the early show in the book the reason edmure keeps missing is because he is depressed from his father dying and instead of embarrassing him the blackfish shows compassion towards edmure and even says to catlyn that when her grand father died hoster Tully missed too
Is the only man to ever defeat Tywin Lannister in battle even though he was outnumbered, freed the Blackfish even while the castle was surrounded by a massive army, only knew his wife for a few hours and never even met his child but still cared enough to save them from a terrible death at the hands of the Lannisters, sheltered the small folk of the Riverlands within his walls because it was the right thing to do, never lost a battle, and in the books is set up to be the first man ever to seize Casterly Rock. Edmure Tully, is, ironically, one of the only characters in ASOIAF who's truly just straight good, no moral greyness here.
The show spent a lot of time softening the actions of characters who were terrible people all along, but when you have one of the few characters who could be considered a good person, they turn him into a clown.

Book Edmure a)Missed the ship because he was barely holding it together after Hoster died. b)Went against Robbs orders because Robb didn't tell him shit about his plans to cut Tywin off in the West and that miscommunication allowed the Lannisters and Tyrells to make common cause. The show just loved making him the butt of jokes, but I liked book Edmure. He regularly cared for the smallfolk and the lords under him and tried to protect them and even let them go to defend their lands from the Lannister forces, which sets him apart from so many other lords.
Why do I feel most adaptations just do that? It's like they play lottery to decide which character to make fun of. And then, the fans of the series that don't read the original work then mistake the character for an absolute sack of stupid. This happened to Ron from Harry Potter too. I only watched HP films and I liked Ron, but then I found out his character was altered from the books, I was just disappointed. It's so malicious somehow.

Blackfish is so freaking awesome. If you read the books, you see he's a huge reason behind Robb's repeated military success. Robb is a genius commander, no doubt, but he had the perfect man right there to lead the outriding forces and that was instrumental to his military victories.
He was a grumpy old bastard. A lot similar to Catelyn didn't have any wits or intelligence. Just your old school fight and die mentality. It gets demonstrated in season 6.

Felt so bad for him he was my favorite character only to be bullied by Blackfish constantly and then Sansa in the finale one last time. He was the king that was promised. Has the wisdom, experience, qualities and courage. Most tragic storyline ever. I was rooting for Edmure Tully he is a fantastic and an honorable man. Red Wedding is the most upsetting episode in history. Jaime & Edmure were the best knights in the seven kingdoms just on the opposite team. Their conversation scene was excellently written in season 6. Shame most of the series relies on cheap shock factor, sadism and brutality.

looking at the arrows, Edmure's shots aren't bad archery - they are all very close to target. He's missing due to wind. He's missing because he's not assessing all the factors that are needed for a good shot, he's good but blunders from not thinking of the larger picture. excellent foreshadowing for the Stone Mill.

Edmure is the only Lord in Westeros who gives a shit about his small folk, has a viable heir ready and available, is undefeated in battle yet hates war, is a good dude with no ill will from anyone else sitting there, and unlike anyone else there, actually has experience running his kingdom, particularly in peace time, since his father was ill for so long. Edmure is the best candidate at that gathering, whether that's fantastic or sad is up for debate.
