Today I took my AMD-65 out to the range. I've shot regular AKMs with AMD muzzle brakes, but never had the chance to try the AMD-65 in its original proper configuration. And you know what? It's actually not bad, at least in short helpings. The brake is really concussive for people around the gun, but it's not bad at all for the shooter. The grip would get tiring after a while, but for just a bit of shooting it's not bad at all.
Thanks to Brandon Herrera / The AK Guy Inc for building this rifle for me!

It would awesome for Ian to review his AK collection. Similar to what he did with his G3’s.
Hungarians were using MLOK handguards and obnoxious muzzle devices way before it was cool. The original AK hipsters.

As a Hungarian, seeing Ian firing a hungarian gun , in a uniform made also by my country makes me extremely happy! Thank you so much!!!

Back in the 80s, my father, as a Bulgarian army serviceman, took part in a convention, held in Hungary of the Warsaw Pact military small arms producers. There were competitive shootings conducted for all the primary assault rifles of the Europe's Eastern block. The best came up the Soviet AKM, followed by the German AKM. They all complained about the Bulgarian milled receiver AK, though my dad achieved with it the highest score on the range😊 And he told me about the concussion the AMD muzzle brake caused. And it also put the resting pillow on fire while they were shooting it prone.
That should have given it bonus points :D
Served me and my unit well in the jungles of Tselinoyarsk back in '64.
Unfortunately, some spy with a tranquilizer gun knocked us all out and our revolver twirling commander got hit by a motorcycle.
Never really lived that down.
lmao
What a thrill.
I heard the spy became a mercenary later and tried to build his own nukes and countries for soldiers.
Why does this comment read like an Archer episode?

Technically not everybody got this within the army. I served in 2001-2002 and our base had AK-63D. You should try to get one, Ian. They are fun. It was a technical brigade. (earthmoving machines basically) You look neat in that uniform, by the way :) Cheers from Hungary
That video is coming in a few days ;)
At that time Hungarian Defence Forces was downsized, so the AMDs were withdrawn and replaced with the AK-63s.
Oh, Ian, by the way, the uniform is not the best for this gun. Check out the pic below.
i.pinimg.com/originals/b0/27/f3/b027f394404e033a30ddd9593e7ef6ef.jpg
Looks like the army started to get rid of them around that time, as we got AK-63Ds by the time I was in in 2002-3 at Tapolca.
Sarge mentioned that they got rid of the old AMDs a year before, and "they were all shit". Never went into detail whether they were shit because they weren't full sized infantry rifles, or because they worn out due to constant use by not very enthusiastic conscripts. Granted, even the AK-63D s have been ranged from freshly taken out of original packaging that day(yep, our unit just had it's rifles replaced, straight outta boxes. oil flowed freely that day..) , to the ones, that have been dragged around by the guards company every other day for a 24 hour duty. (And guards company was a very "special" unit, full of very "special" people)
Of course, by the 2000s, the Hungarian military have been cut down drastically, so there were quite a lot of guns in storage to cycle through, so it was a lot easier to get rid of the old AMDs for something better.
@kivitelezo Looks like your call was answered! 4 days ago a video on the AK-63d
well i had pkm. at time the first nato-serbian war.
Nice hat Jordan, "Gotta Try Them All" eh?
My favorite observation was that they shortened the barrel and then gave it a long obnoxious brake, bringing it back almost to the original barrel length. Definitely one of the AK’s of all time.
kinda like the car 15's from nam with a 6" flash hider on them.... just give me the full length barrel!
Ian: "The concussion is jarring" Brandon Herrera: "Nyet, rifle is fine"

that was a great video. and we finally were able to see someone of the crew. Thank you Ian for all the countless hours of entertainment, thank you Josh for the camerawork and commentary and thank you AMD 65 for being... present
I was a conscript from 1992-93. My first gun was an AMD-65. It was the best. I knew where I was shooting it, I could stop the upward movement with the first grip. It was wonderful to shoot. Then the second AK-63 gun was a sickener!
(AMD= Automatic Modified Dessant.)(from Hungary)
Love my AMD. Bought it in 08' was my first AK. Mine has the little tube to make it 16 inch and my friends complain about the concussion at the range constantly.
Wearing what I believe is an Ash Ketchum hat whilst filming a firearm discharging feels like tempting fate with a middle finger...

Explain please
I have some of your books, and they are truly fantastic. I'm proud to own them.
My father was conscript of the Hungarian Peoples Army (Magyar Néphadsereg) during the early '80s. He served as NCO at the mechanized infantry, their service rifle was the AMD-65. As an NCO he has opportunity to train with other types weapons also. He said that AMD-65 was a fine gun, but even the AK-63D (AMMSZ) was more comfortable to shoot. On the otherhand AMDs compactness was very useful generally, and especially when it was shot through the firing ports of a BMP.
I purchased some 20 round Hungarian AK mags years ago and they are handy as a first magazine if you want a compact gun. I also owned a Century Arms Hungarian AK for a bit and while I purchased it new, the bolt look like it had seen thousands of rounds already as it probably started as a parts kit.
Get in touch with AMD65tech as he makes a cheek riser for the rear stock that is solid and it makes it look like it belongs on the AMD. It doesn't mess with the aesthetic of the AMD65. Great video.
Was just going to mention this. Actually solves the problem of no cheek weld, and makes it pretty decent to shoot.
Damn. And I just bought a samson S.A.S. stock for mine.
Huhh thats kind of funky to see wearing a hungarian "'Bociminta" cow camo
Mid life crisis Ash Ketchum definitely caught Ian off guard with that last round
That muzzlebreak is ingenious! You do not even need to use flashbangs to clear a room, the gun has one built in!
Especially on full auto
And you did it! Range day with the hungarian rifle!
Lovely :D
I have a Hungarian franke-ak. AMD 65 parts kit, Kodak receiver w/ side rail, 14 3/8 barrel, pinned and welded brake, fixed wood stock. Love it. Feels like a gun more at home in a fallout game than anything else, but it sure does get attention at the range.
I was a Hungarian soldier for two years. This gun (AMD 65) is designed for commandos and paratroopers. The military used it everywhere.Experience: very accurate combat position during stress (75 - 150m) . very destructive. We use 30 number ammunition stores. Taking off the front of the pipe will make you stronger and louder ( I was the five-time best shooter with AMD 65).
Great video. Nice to see the camera guy shoot a little and give Ian a little sample of a camera man's life! Thanks, Ian! 😎
Surprised that everybody was looking for "short AKM at home", but nobody came up with AK-104/OTs-12 Tiss/AKS-74U analogue. Though as a result we have many unique firearms of former Warsaw Pact states.
“If the bullets dont hit the sound blast will get 'em“. I actually heard this line at a shooting range about this gun
I got my AMD-65 in about 2010, I don’t think it’s ever failed to fire. One time though I forgot I wasn’t wearing ear pro and took a shot. Never again.
I've always liked AK's being a lefty myself. It was always easier for me to manipulate the controls on an AK then other rifles. And love the Ash hat camera man.
Ian: "It's really blasty."
Jordan: "Concussive Payback Time."
;)
A new prescribed Elbonian feature 'small arms must have maximum concussion impact to deter enemy from charging our positions'. Concussive brain injury is not a concern for Elbonians, especially the officer class..! 🤪
Their old Swedish M40 in 8x63 also had a muzzle break. After that, there is no concussive blast they can't handle.
Elbonia adopted the Hungarian AMD-65 after their first model paratrooper carbine failed to go into full production. The ventilated lower handguard reminded them of their trusty old ZB53 machine guns in cute handheld form, and the muzzle break made it sound like a mini ZB53.
Rare Forgotten weapons camera man appearance!

@ForgottenWeapons, have you ever considered starting a series talking about a specific weapon's use in a variety of countries?
An example of what I'm talking about is the Hotchkiss system of machine guns used by the Japanese, for example?
C and Rsenal does stuff like that
Very nice touch that you were wearing the old hungarian uniform along the hungarian AMD.
That fireball out the end is pretty fun too, lol.
I've got an 8" Saiga-12 set up with the AMD-65 handguard/wood grip with a VZ-58 folding stock. It's brutal and I love it.
My all time favorite ak variant.
And you put that style brake on the "Ian's customs: Krinkov"? It must have looked like a PAK-40 when firing.
Hungarian here.
I freaking ENVY you man.
Because in 1995 when I did my mandatory service in the Hungarian Army, we were taken to the shooting range ONCE (after weeks of preparations during the training period) and got the "chance" to shoot NINE rounds.
Yup only nine rounds AND we had to divide the shots to 3 single and 3 burst (2-2-2) shots. :D
(Bang, bang, bang..... pause.... bang-bang, bang-bang, bang-bang.)
It was over before we get the feel of it, only to get some ringing in our ears because we did not get proper earplugs but cotton balls. :D
1 year of service and no more shooting range for us. :(
And the stock is bad indeed.
Ian need collabs with brandon fr
Really wasn't expecting something with a stock that small to handle as well as Ian seems to handle it.
The concussion conversation reminds me of my Mosin-Nagant M44.
Nobody likes being in the lane next to me when I use that.
Hungary, Romania, Portugal, Holland.. they are right! DPM is one of the coolest patterns ever.
Always thought a forwards-angled front grip might be a good idea. If you ball your fore hand into a fist and then raise it to rifle height with minimul tension or stretching, that's where it ends up. Maybe a bit flatter than the AMD's in a ideal world (something like an upaide-down, back- to-front Bren carry handle), but the cost advantage of using the stock grip reversed was obviously too good to pass up on an el-cheapo gun.
Also worth noting that the front grip is placed exactly far enough to give clearance for a standard 30 round AK magazine (Ian demonstrated this in the previous video). If it wasn't a reversed/forward slanted grip it likely wouldn't have the clearance without moving it up a bit further.
@@SpartanIVAlpha015 Some sites sell a cut down version of the front grip and a cheek riser for the stock. I have both for mine and it works well on the AMD-65 👍
Ash has had enough: dead or alive, he's gonna catch them all!
The brake on my Cetme was brutal as well.
Greeting form Hungary, thanks for making this video! :)
I appreciate your suit!
It was my primary weapon for 18 months! It was a weapon of choice for paratroopers! Small with big firepower
Jordan's pretty cool. Shortening the barrel to put a loudener on it really is quite a strange choice. At least it serves as an example of superfluous modification.
I remember people used to say the muzzle brake was made loud on purpose to intimidate the enemies. Not sure it really intimidated but sure chased people away.
Huh another collab between Gun Jesus and AK Guy nice!
When are you and Brandon going to do a fun video? It would be hilarious, and I would probably learn something
In the book and movie “Royal Flash”, one of the characters (von Sternberg) has a “game” called “Hungarian Roulette” - same as Russian Roulette, but you don’t hold the gun to your head, but point it at your opponent’s head . Seeing the concussion and how much it hurts around the shooter, this could be the inspiration…. Not fatal, but , after a long day on the range, everyone in the squad certainly would have headaches
Jó fegyver ez!Üdv,Magyarországról!
At night, that muzzle break fireball will blind the shooter...
Cameraman smoothly getting away from the muzzle shortly after firing commenced.
20 round Magazine pouches for the Hungarian AK's are great for AR magazines, just in case anyone needs to know this.
love your video Ian!
Looks sweet and that’s all that really matters.
My AMD65 , & MADDI are my most favorite AK 's by far.
There's no doubt the AMD break is way over the top when it comes to being loud & concussive for bystanders,, but man do they ever work well ! There worse that a F-16 breaking the sound barrier at tree top level, and that's no exaggeration !!
Mine are slightly modified to have 4 extra 1/8th " holes on top which helps muzzle rise even more than the standard ones,, but no less loud though !
I loved my AMD, when I was a soldier in Hungary !(2003.)
Szia!

Let's just admire the commitment to getting matching camo to the nationality of the gun Ian is shooting.
Depends on the era you want go for. That's the 90M camo, introduced in 1990, but AFAIK never completely replaced the older 65M single color green uniforms, before being replaced by newer designs. Lot of conscripts wore the older uniform until the end of conscription in 2004.
I have a TGI AMD65 import. One of, if not my favorite AK!
Definitely! Won't be selling mine anytime soon!
Became my favourite AK variant when I first saw one in 1983, in an episode of The Professionals. Very nice
In this video, Ian fired more rounds than Hungarian conscripts during their entire military service. The front grip really is indeed awkward, but it's really comfortable in a prone shooting position.
I had this gun like that when I was a soldier. I liked it, it was a good gun. I could even hit a machine gun formation at 350 yards (used 4 -5 bulets). It wasn't noisy when you were wearing your armored helmet. Because the earpiece on that one had good noise reduction. If you were more than 10 feet away, it was tolerable.
More range videos please!
COOLNESS YALL!!!!
Have fun.
Always wanted one of those...
Heh well they do say the effectiveness of a muzzle brake is proportional to how much it sucks for people standing next to you.
I love my custom built AMD65 with wood furniture. It has a 4.5" muzzle brake welded on to be classified as a rifle by law. Full length, improperly gassed (cheap) AK's have a stout recoil; I was shooting with another family and their daughters age 15 & 18 actually loved and said it was their favorite gun to shoot. Have had other small women say the same thing, it handles unbelievably well for a 7.62x39. Actually how I acquired it was a dude who dabbles in gun trading & historic firearms left it at my house. I proceeded to take it to the desert to test it out and was instantly blown away with how smooth & manageable it was. Needless to say I bought it over 2 years ago and the AMD65 now has a special place in my heart & collection. It's true the concussive brake doesn't affect the shooter; on the flip side whoever you are shooting at or around will hear and feel VERY powerful, loud blasts that I believe could have a psychological impact in a real life combat situation setting off a fight or flight response as they can FEEL the muzzle energy in the lungs & sinuses. Especially if you were to fire this indoors I could only imagine everyone in the room getting a TBI lol. Not to mention how many shots you can get off in a tight group up to 550-600 yards... 7.62x39 will only loose 200fps with a 11.5" barrel vs a 16" while still retaining great accuracy with the proper twist rate and gassing, I cannot emphasize how smooth this build can be if done right. The last dude I let shoot it said, "Wow if you got into a gunfight against someone with this you would be F-ed!"
Awesome!
I've experienced the 'short barrel rifle cartridge' issue with a KT PLR-16 which is absolutely terrible with their 2 port muzzle brake. Very effective dampening muzzle rise and recoil but HORRIBLE smack in the face concussion. Went to a Levang Linear comp and it's actually tolerable to shoot and others around don't wince in pain with every shot.
Man see amd65, man happy. Big muzzle flash, man much happier.
I hear the short barrel is actually more accurate under automatic fire because it's more rigid and has less flex
There is no such thing as "Accurate" automatic fire when your entire world is a blur ...
