    My fav story with AMDs from a friend who was a conscript in the 90s:
    They were at some training and he lost the butt-stock of the AMD in a forest. The sergeant sent him back to look for it. He returned with four additional ones.

      @Qᴜɪᴄᴋ Sᴀɴᴅ This has some reality to it. Around Várpalota (Bakony Harckiképző Központ) the biggest military training center in Europe you can find random AMD/AKM stocks AKM mags and a bit after the US guys leave even 5.56 AR-15 mags.
      Edit: As of 2020.07.26 Hungary has retired ALL AMD-65 in inventory. Almost all AKM variants we used. (Except for a couple of AK-63Fs which the replacement for hasn't arrived yet.) Hungary is almost clear of the AK... We moved to the CZ BREN-2 in 7.62x39... So no more cool metal mags...

      I would assume that economic climate wasn't the best after the iron curtain came down, and that most of the country's heavy industry took a hit.
      But the actual reason behind the manufacturer's bankruptcy is a weapons deal embargo from 2004, according to Wikipedia. Also, there was some corruption scandal apparently, when millions of dollars worth of funds "went missing". The mother company bailed them out, so the company still exists today, but they are no longer manufacturing firearms, only heating (HVAC) devices.

    • @lioncelica5170
      @lioncelica5170 6 лет назад +7

      That fucking blows. Because in 2004, the Assault Weapons Ban expired in the US, so if FEG had held out a little longer, they could have started exporting Hungarian AK's to the US again. Too bad really, all we have now are Romanian, Bulgarian, and Serbian AK's being imported. Maybe Polish rifles soon.

  • @-Seeker-
    @-Seeker- 6 лет назад +87

    The AMD-65, (Automata Módosított Deszant) was meant to be a paratrooper weapon, while the AK-63 was the standard infantry rifle.
    However, many other infantry units ended up with AMD-65 rifles too. A lot of people I spoke with, who served during the socialist times praised the weapon's handling and light weight.
    The Hungarian Defense Force is currently planning to replace the AK series with the CZ Bren 2 rifles, with CZ constructing a plant in Hungary.

    • @commanderfoxtrot
      @commanderfoxtrot 3 года назад +4

      What I find too bad is that the CZ Bren 2 doesn’t really share anything with the traditional World War Bren from what I’ve seen. Kinda a letdown, the bare minimum they could’ve done was give it a toploading magazine.

I really didn't like the foldable shoulder rest. It would have been a big problem if you had to go with this in a sharp situation!!!

    AMD is an abbrevation of "Automatic Modified Dessant". It means, that it was developed for the use of the hungarian paratroopers. In fact, it was used widely in other roles too in the army, and also by the police here, in Hungary in the 90's. Later it was replaced by the AK-63D. (Sorry for my english, im from Hungary).

    Mines is on a FEG receiver SBRd and with an ultimak and Aimpoint t1. The short barrel is heavy and you should do an accuracy test on it, LAV. There is no barrel whipping going on so there is some accuracy improvements.
    Notice it on your slow mo videos and also compare it to your AK74 and AKM videos with the normal 16 inch barrel.

    My draco (AK47 pistol) is based on one of these. The receiver is made by nodak spud before they were named nodak spud. Its thicker than normal. A cure for the lack of the top handguard is to use the mission first tactical handguard. The upper HG screws to the bottom HG. That's the route I went. I believe midwest industries can do the same but I used what I already had. It was assembled by century on that nodak spud reciever before they changed their name. It has a full length gas system with the barrel cut shorter so I don't have to worry about the bolt carrier beating the rear trunnion to death like you have to worry about with the mini and micro draco models. Nice video as always, Larry.

    So I deployed to Afghanistan and the Afghan National Police and ANA got a ton of these in the mid to late 2000s. Later on the USA started to give them a ton of M16A2 but before that for some reason ISAF flooded Afghanistan with AMD-65s. Yes, the handguards get super hot and the Afghans had AMD65 with no pistol grip so they had to qualify and learn to shoot with this rifle. You can find a lot of pictures online of all of this.

    The AMD-65 also has a shorter gas piston than a full AKM, which I think aids in the recoil with less mass traveling back and forth. What are cyclic rates vs the AKM?
    A place in Texas makes a bolt on cheek riser which works very effectively.

      The reciprocating mass of the bolt carrier has a different effect on recoil than the overall weight of the gun. 3 Gun folks use a lightweight bcg to help reduce felt recoil, if the bolt speeds remain the same.

      The gas port is bigger, so the shorter piston means nothing, it still recoils harder than a regular AKM. An AMD65 also weighs less, so more recoil with that too.

      My gas port is 3mm, just like on most other AKMs. Without the brake, my AMD still shoots softer than other AKMs I have built.

    I think I saw this in a Syphon Filter game...
    Also, the "T" at the end of "Bellot" is silent.

    Advisory: On the TGI AMDs, be ready for the tiny spot weld to crack.
    I was aware--before buying my TGI--what the weld's repair cost would be. A buddy's AMD-65 weld also cracked.
    $160, charged by the only gun smith in Memphis >> who knows how to do the correct work

    Maybe I missed it, but did you touch on the shortened gas piston?

    Yes, I remember when these were cheap. It was very accurate for a short barrel AK.

      @Honk Honkler exactly, its mainly the rifling and the quality of production for the barrel.

      Though the way a bolt chambers a round can influence accuracy also.
