Marathon Runner Rob Sloan Denies Cheating

- Three months after he was forced to hand back his Kielder Marathon bronze medal, Rob Sloan has insisted that he did not cheat. The former Sunderland Harrier - he has since been thrown out of the club - was accused of boarding a spectators' bus after the 20-mile point. He then allegedly disembarked and crossed the finishing line in third. However, Sloan told the BBC's Inside Out programme that it was a case of "mistaken identity".
I've run over a hundred competitive races in my life. There is no way this guy could pass the third place without the third place knowing. That by itself is the end of his charade. The fact there are so many other bits of evidence against him makes his bald-faced contention frankly embarrassing. He should be banned for life.
His lies are bad too. “A Garmin doesn’t work on a bus.” That’s hilarious. I owned a Garmin for years that I kept in my car (car = bus) for navigation. It’s what they’re designed for. I guess some people get away with things through sheer denial regardless of how outrageous their claims are
And passing the people in 4th to 9th too!
This is why there should be timing mats at every 5K
Most of the top marathons in Australia have timing mats every 5 km
The regional runs are every 10km

Ive had my garmin do so weird stuff with heart rate
The wrist tracker can be really inaccurate at times however distance and pace is always pretty accurate
If your garmin shows an uninterrupted segment at 30 miles per hour uou are definately not running
Although when swimming with it doing laps during training in the pool recently my watch data showed me swimming 100m repeats at around 1:20 which i can do
However some instantaneous rates showed 0:40 seconds for the same distance
About 7 seconds under world record pace ,i showed my training mates this we had a good laugh

I had a glitch on my garmin on a bike. Even in a car I’d be hard pressed to go 196KPH.
My mile pr on strava is 3:46. It says I ran that for the first mile of a long run. Watches do that some time

Yes, my soon to be ex. She can easily convince herself, she repeats a lie over and over as if practising her story and by the end, I swear to god that she can’t tell the lie from the truth.
Running a marathon on a soft treadmill with fresh legs and no air resistance is very different to running a marathon on an actual course after just doing an all out 10k race. Fact is, he was 4 minutes behind at half way mark. So to take third he would have had to really pick up his pace and his Garmin data shows no such thing (apart from going 30mph at the very end).
He's obviously a really decent runner. Shame he's such a lying POS

The mistaken identity who actually got on the bus was a local named Lance Armstrong.
Lance Armstrong denied for years that he had taken drugs, only to eventually admit that he had done so. I don't believe a word that man says any more, including that he had once walked on the moon.

He's trying to prove he can run the distance. Which i'm sure he can do. It's just 3:07:00 which is quiet a difference from his 2:51:00 time from the Kielder Marathon. His split pace differed from 6:31 too 7:08 per mile. it doesn't prove anything though. I'd like to see what his split's were before the tracker went "Haywire". Cairne's pace was 6:40 per mile.

Amy I'd say its psychologically harder to run long distances on the treadmill compared to outside, atleast i find it way harder to distract myself from the pain on the treadmill

Yeah, I remember him too. He was a pretty average runner back then too, until he got within a mile or two of the finish line and then flames shot out of his arse and you should see him go. Even the fire engine had trouble catching him up.

In short, Hopping on a bus or running on a road cover with trees is not enough to interfere with the signal made with data receivers that tract speed or cadence ect.

The Garmin went haywire because he got on the bus. A cheat and a liar. He's not raced since running 20 miles of that race. Pity as he's done 78 mins for 1/2 marathon which is respectable and he could go under 3 for the marathon
A Garmin will work on a bus but they won't go 'haywire' and register 30 mph unless its traveled at 30 mph. How a daft little lie can escalate. Silly man. Daft thing is he's a good runner.

His Garmin would've tracked his route, too: if the marathon route wasn't identical to the bus route at that point, any cheating should be pretty easy to prove or disprove by looking at that. Not that I need it to make up my mind! Funny that he doesn't resort to it, either... 😂
The bus got up to 30 MPH but that's the thing that you'd be looking for!
Here's the sad part. If that guy ran 3:07 on a treadmill he probably was capable of running near the time he would have had to run to get 3rd in that race. A garmin would register in a vehicle and it looks like it proves he cheated. Usain Bolt doesn't run 30 mph.
The course has some uphills and turns, plus the outdoor elements that runners have to battle with. I think these factors will add at least 20mins to his finish time.
3.07 wouldn't have him in the top 10 for the race (even without all the hills on that course), which is ironically pretty much where he was when he stepped off the course.

Garmins do work on buses, another massive lie forgotten many times to stop watch at end of a race/run, jumped in the car and then clocked the entire journey home.

I genuinely feel sorry for this guy. At 23 miles your brain isn't working normally at all, especially if you're having a bad race and/or are injured. I think the reporter is exactly right and that he finished third by accident. He looks guilty crossing the finish line and he sounds guilty in his interview. He's living with this guilt/shame and for whatever reason doesn't feel like he can come forward and admit to the lies. He's proven that he's a good runner and I hope he was able to overcome this and clear his conscious and isn't continuing to live with this.

I've run 12 marathons and 3 short ultras
Ive felt the pain and had that fried feeling after 20 miles a few times where you are not quite thinking straight however you still know what you are doing and never have I thought for a second " oh I can't make it so I'll hop on a bus and finish the race
I ran the same race that day, first of many marathons/ultras, was in a bad way for the final 4 miles but finished in 4 hours.....Since then I have run 100 milers a number of times which has involved no sleep for over 30 hours and hallucinations...You don't do this by accident, all he had to do was say it was a mistake and laugh it off. Instead he took the place on the podium, did TV interviews and to this day, over a decade later he continues to deny it.
Running on a treadmill is easier than running on pavement.

Treadmill marathon on the flat? That doesn’t count. Way easier. No wind no nothing. My heart bpm is 16-20% lower at any given pace and n a treadmill unless the grade is 4%. Plus, it’s much less impact and easier on the legs.

just put a camera man at every mile with time stamps, you can check all runners, I think most cheaters just want a non place finish to stay under the radar

Kielder is a really hilly course and very tough going. I dont think the treadmill would replicate those conditions. In all probability you'd have to add 10 to 15 minutes on top of a runners marathon flat road pace when you're talking about completing Kielder.

Sloan's story immediately falls apart once you consider all the contradictions put together.
*Steve Cairns is clearly well ahead of Sloan from the outset...
*Cairns is 3rd at a mile and still third at 15 miles (11 miles to go).
*Steve Cram witnessed Cairns in 3rd place between miles 15 and 16 (11/10 miles to go)... and then a massive gap.
*At the half way point, (13.1 miles) Cairns is 3rd and Sloan 8th. A 4 minute difference which is a big gap.
*At 17 miles Sloan has now fallen back to 10th place.
*Two people travelling on a bus identify a man wearing a 'blue' Sunderland Harriers vest board the vehicle and this guy has lines of verse tattoed on the back of one-leg.
*The driver also remembers a runner get on his bus who claimed to be injured from a 10k run the day before.
*You can see Steve Cairns looking at Sloan where the latter is being interviewed and seriously wanting to 'grab him.' That one clip convinced me of the truth of this story more than anything else.
*Various women raise a question mark as to the true actions of this one runner.
*When tannoyed to go and have a chat he disappeared.
*His own team-mate states that Sloan admitted what he had done.
*His garmin went haywire in the last few miles of the race but worked fine for the rest of 20+ miles.
It would be remarkable if Sunderland Harriers have two runners who are of similar build to Sloan, and who have a similar tattoo down the back of their right-leg. If they do, it should be so easy to check. Sad fact is, he seems like a decent guy and yet his reputation will now be tarnished by that one mistake he made... If he could admit it, he could clear the decks once and for all and start again.
