My wife is an ultra runner and I’ve spent a ton of time at races. The early part of her story is 100% believable. People get injured and catch a car ride to the next aid station. Aid station workers - who aren’t race officials usually - will habitually do everything they can to get runners back on the course. And you often don’t have a choice. It’s a 50-mile point to point race… there’s often no choice but to keep going. And the runners are often incoherent and don’t do sensible things like turn in their number. Of course, the story falls apart when she actually crosses the finish line, accepts the third place trophy, etc. No matter how tired or incoherent you don’t do that by accident.
“I didn’t want to compete anymore…I just wanted to drop out, but I was told I’d regret it if I didn’t finish. So I went ahead and continued running until the end of the race. After I realized I finished in third place, I graciously accepted the medal because I didn’t want the organizers to feel bad that they made a mistake by giving me the medal.”
"I didn't want the organizers to feel bad learning I wasn't third, so I accepted the medal"...you know, I think somehow they would have managed to get over that devastation pretty quickly.
so she ran 47.5 miles only to cheat 2.5 of it. Seems like a terrible decision. She could have easily pushed through the last 2.5 even if her leg still hurt. Real winners find a way to get it done!
@@michaelmcginley7930 It is also shocking that she had the gall to accept the 3rd place trophy and if her 'friend' innocently offered the 'injured' runner a lift why did she not expose her or at least tell her to fess up? Maybe she was more of a conspirator than an innocent 'friend'.
@@BuJammy Well, yeah you're right. Ultimately fraud is fraud, especially when the victim is every day people rather than a faceless organization and it preys on people's goodwill regardless of anyone's personal feelings about sport or military service or whatever. I'll grant all of that.

I can. I play online chess and I'd say every 20 games someone "stalls out" which is where they realise they've lost and instead of being a good sport and resigning, they leave the clock going and force you to stare at the screen. Those are the "bad sports." Then a couple of times I've received an email saying someone I played has cheated and my loss to them has been removed and my rating adjusted. Some people just never fully grow up, for whatever reason.
Shakespeare was originally going to name "Macbeth" as "Zakrzewski". Kit Marlow advised him against it, famously stating "A play thus named, Zahcheffskee, must needs give strain to the obvious mind, so common among the Scotch to hear it.". The rest is history.

karl jobst mentioned!! I've never run more than a mile so this content is very much out of my Venn diagram but your coverage and sense of levity is very engaging.
Own your failures. Had to quit my last 100k run at 72k. Would have been easy to cheat, but I would carry this stain with me for the rest of my life for what? Nothing. Just finishing 100k. I can finish 100k another time, but I can never get rid of the lie. Furthermore: We grow through failures. I know what to change and improve in my training to succeed next time.
Ruiz took the subway for a lot further than half a mile. You're probably misremembering as she jumped out of the crowd with a half mile to go to cross the finish line.
I don’t understand why these people would ever cheat. Like they already do train very hard and are very talented. Guess they wanna be first that bad tho. I don’t see marathons as a race. I really see it as everyone is just competing against themselves. Not each other.
Wow. So she accepted a car ride but nevertheless, decided to cross the finish, thus claiming an official finish and then to add insult to injury (of the event and fellow competitors), she accepted the 3rd place trophy. Absolutely freakin disgusting and inexcusable. She needs to be banned by all RDs for a significant period of time...like a year!
I could honestly see me finishing a race via cheating but I’d never take a medal. And would probably stop at the line if it looked like I was finishing in the top 10. I understand getting 15-20 deep and realizing you’re cooked. But still wanting to step over the line because you accomplished something for yourself.
I feel a little bad for some of the cheaters you cover because it sounds to me that they crumble under the pressure and expectations they set for themselves. For example this lady, her body wasn’t up to it that day (so she says) and so she felt she had to cheat to match was she had done previously.
It's more sad than the cheating itself when someone can't own up to it and apologize properly. Don't get me wrong: both things are bad, but how can you forgive a person who continues to be dishonest? In this case, I also can't imagine what it's all for. Even if you believe her story 100% it doesn't actually change much. She might as well be honest, no?

People in the comments need to realise this is an ultra long race. The thing that is less excusable though is that she didn't flag it up in the following days. However i can imagine that she was probably unsure about what to do and it's the type of thing where the longer you leave it the harder it is to bring it up. Just giving her the benefit of the doubt. I think she deserves a bit more slack than people have been giving her.
