    I feel like the twist about Church was done for shock value and not logic. You look at the story told about him from his time in that hive until now. You get zero impression he wanted to perfect the species or anything else. He poisoned that hive and did everything he could to sabotage them. He did what he had to in order to survive, but he didn't appear to empathize with them on any level. They killed his father and he had to kill his mother to avoid committing additional horrors. And then he took a dead alien out of his own body.
    There's no way that guy wanted to perfect them. Extreme measures to annihilate them? Sure that makes sense for his character. But unlocking their potential just seems a totally random character shift.

      Well on one level he is a scientist, so there's that, but on another level he did more or less go insane and may or may not have literally lost his mind!,
      And in losing his mind, the lose of it, may have made him hive mind, remember that he was living with them for ages as well as eating the same 'food' as them as well which would of changed his DNA in some way

  • @Linkophere

    Damn. I was just starting to like Church too. I feel him wanting to understand the aliens on a deeper level, but also wanting to find ways to destroy them was a great duality. This just made such a hard turn on what he stands for. Or maybe he really did just lose his mind and never realised it. Stockholm syndrome almost. Shame

    Wait, so those plasma suits completely disintegrated the entire bodies of the xenomorphs but left their blood perfectly intact so it could create a literal wave of acid blood...amazing job there, weapons developers xD

    • @Hartzilla2007

      Agent Dash I heard liquify not disintegrate. Which is a stupid thing to do with something with acid blood.

    • @nexviper
      @nexviper 5 лет назад +42

      I'm going to go on a massive leap that they were intended to liquefy at range, no big chunks of body spewing blood being carried forward as it died or spray from explosive rounds, no corpses to use as cover and get closer.
      Then because the numbers were so large and attacks so suicidal the xenomorphs still got close which messed the whole plan up forcing close range liquefying and use of standard weapons.

    • @Hartzilla2007
      @Hartzilla2007 5 лет назад +4

      Well going by the picture of the comic in the video covering it that didn't work, it just made a wave of acid washing over everything.

    I wonder why it seems that scientists assigned to develop bio-weapons from Aliens always end up infatuated with them and they become really screwed up in the head :/. I was really starting to like Church, thinking his experience with the Xenos would bode his inspiration for wanting to want to learn how to eliminate them and he does do that to a certain extent through his experiments. I guess a good quote for him would be "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"

      Maybe that's a facet of the alien hivemind? In some of the novels, simply having a hive nearby could influence dreams. Maybe the hivemind is sort of always broadcasting, and thinking about them too hard opens one up to its influence in some way.

    • @crwydryny
      @crwydryny 6 лет назад +50

      there's several theories, one being that the aliens are able to influence human minds (the earth war comics actually touched on the alien queen affecting people's dreams causing them to form cults and such )
      another theory is that the company specifically seeks out scientist who ethically flexible, such people are not known for being very sane and it could be that they become infatuated by the alien
      there's also the fact that if you spend long enough studying something you can become obsessed with it, this is common in anthropology (going native) and biology (such as primate studies) where the researchers start off copying their subjects to try to understand them then before long they lose themselves in the study.

    Dr. Church's story could be concidered canon since there is nothing that would suggest contradiction with oficial alien canon, none that i could think of atleast.

  • @theobscurestash6537
    @theobscurestash6537 7 лет назад +46

    While this particular comic series arch has it's own 'insular' idea of what the hive mind is, and what it's capable of, it doesn't much reflect out to the rest of the canon very well. Dr. Church's story is one of the most compelling, and disturbing for sure, but what implications does it have? In hindsight the xenomorph is supposedly already the 'perfect' organism. So what Church is aiming for I don't know, but it would have to be a very personal vision of biological terror.

    I would say that it drove him nuts. When you are used to living in a new environment for a long time, you get institutionalized by it. A similar premise would be Brooks from Shawshank, who was so used to prison life, that he was willing to threaten a man with a knife so he could get his sentence increased. Church is no different, because they needed him alive for the time being and he gotten use to their movements he in a sense psychologically became a Xenomorph, he gave voice to the voiceless. As for humans being the key. Considering that the Deacon and other variations of the Xenomorphs were sprung from human DNA and the Engineer's bio-weapon. It's safe to say that because Xenomorphs are technically related to us we could have some degree of control over them.

    The foreshadowing at the beginning where the crew member asked about the rumors that only the expendable were sent to the station made me figure that Crespi was requested and intended for that tank all along. He was intelligent but being from the military and an order taker I wasn't surprised Church won him over so quickly. But if Church had been lying about his relationship with Lennox he might be prone to confabulation and may have been making things up about his experiences along. I missed the bit where McGuinness gave the alien a telepathic order without that serum. Odd that Church didn't appropriate her for those tanks as well.

      Once it existed action figures of aliens mixed with gorilla DNA, It also came with a mini comic making it kind of (silly) canon.
      The alien 3 movie was a dog, the TRUE COW DNA alien was also made into a comic.
      Among other strange mix of alien creatures like snake, queen facehugger and others. God I loved to play with these toys when I was a kid, same my brother.
      Its a shame they didn't make more toys of this style cause they believed it was 2 spoopy for children.

    One thing that could kill the xenomorphs is making their water supply alkaline. Their blood is acidic, thus reasoning that their enzymes’ optimal pH is quite low and acidic seeing as it easily burns through many things. By making their water basic, their enzymes denature and almost all of their body processes are shut down.

    Why would Church do this? He swore to eliminate the Xenomorphs. I don't understand how this makes sense for his character.

    You pose some intriguing questions. I’d say church was altered on physical, mental, emotional levels but deep, perhaps deep enough that the crossover of DNA memory may have occurred, like you postulate he may now embody the hive & its needs. From my perspective, seeing David alter the xenomorph organism as seen in Prometheus, clearly showed the worst enemy of humans is themselves.

    To me...Church wanted everything Crespi had seen and experienced.
    Church had, indeed, been assimilated into a hive... however the hive he had been an unwitting part of had no Queen. He had never met a Queen, so his scientific method was incomplete. Crespi had first hand, INTIMATE details from a living, healthy Queen.
    Crespi's mind was Church's missing piece.

    That is an interesting theory about the Queen having infected Crespi with some material that would serve Church's studies. After suffering a nasty dog bite in high school, my roommate recovered and had a dime-size pimple like growth form on the scar about ten years later. It turns out that a fragment of a dog tooth was embedded just below his skin above the muscle tissue. While not life threatening, his body slowly and gradually fought to remove the foreign body on its own.
    Now Crespi likely suffered much deeper and more grievous wounds from the Queen. It's not unreasonable to assume some foreign xenomorph material lingered inside his body from those wounds.
    As for McGuiness, while she is quite exceptional to have faced down a xenomorph drone, I believe such events would be few and far between across the entire human species. At the moment of the attack, McGuinness was the culmination of all her experiences, manifesting in the woman she was, then and there. If you were to have taken McGuiness at the first mention of her in the video, and had her encounter a xenomorph at that very moment, without the character development and revelations of Dr. Church's work, she would likely have been just another victim.
    I argue that it would even be rare, if not impossible, in the event of a protracted xenomorph encounter with a large number of humans. Even if armed with weapons (like colonial marines) the fear and psychological stresses of combat would eventually wear down the few survivors to the point that paranoia and mental instabilities would make it impossible for them to display the mental fortitude to dominate a xenomorph.
