I started out on an acoustic, it has some pretty high action strings and it was incredibly difficult at first but it paid off. When I got my first electric I couldn't believe how much easier it was to play.

I actually use my acoustic to play downtuned. You wouldnt believe how badass Dream No More sounds downtuned to C# on acoustic. Its freaking awesome. So humbuckered electric guitars suit me better.
