To all the people saying high notes aren't music and they should be playing the Arban's book: there's no such thing as being good at one thing and becoming a professional musician. So if you think you're good enough at classical trumpet to write off lead playing, which is an art, then I'm sorry for you. There's a difference between barely getting the notes and making them into music. That was music. Perfectly in tune, great tone, and not forced. I'd like to see you play Arban's or anything with Wayne and see who ends up on top.
@@playthattrumpet Nothing worse than a trumpet player who's a squeaker when they think they're a screamer. You usually find it comes with a huge ego, making it unbearable on multiple levels.
Looks like a bunch of the rattles on here are a little jealous about screamers. You can't be a screamer without some ego. I don't scream to make you like me. I scream because it is fun. Keep practicing.
His syncopation reminds me of feminine rhymes in a sonnet, or maybe dark chocolate on filet mignon...; sure, its fancy, it takes skill to do ... but it does not help this song ....he needs to overcome his ego and realize that its not about him,its about the music.....
For the first time in my life I hit a Double C this morning. It wasn't strong or well supported but the pitch was there. If I keep working it will improve! Double G used to be my upper limit - no longer! Thank you Wayne for the inspiration!!!!!!
Used to be able to hit a double c (just) then got braces, sooo bloody frustrating not being able to get above a G (on top of stave) but we will get there 😅
Actually, the final high note is cleaner than Maynard, who would probably screech and squeal a bit, while Wayne's ultra-high is a pure, smooth musical note.
Maynard had a completely different sound and style. Why compare the two? Do you want to compare who sold more albums ? Let's enjoy the music. Merry Christmas.
This song is off my favorite Christmas album of all time. Every year I wait until its "OK" to start playing it. This is with out a doubt my favorite arrangement of any Christmas song ever. In fact I would put it up their in my top five all time favorite songs. period.
I've been playing trumpet for 45 years. I've studied out of the Arbans book. I'm still studying it. I don't think there are too many trumpet players that can play everything in the Arbans. If you can, than you are a great trumpet player. The upper register, as all horn players know, is very difficult to do. Especially clearly. Wayne, in my opinion, is one of the best trumpet players I had ever heard. That even includes MF, who was sloppy compared to Wayne. The tonality is incredible. Have you ever tried making your horn scream in the upper register and then come down and hold a middle d like Wayne does at the end of the song? I agree with Amanda. Wayne is unbelievable.
I agree 100%, I don't particularly like the double D in the context of the song. I love Wayne and his playing, and I am impressed with the double D for sure!
The first time I heard Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouvea “ Caught In A Current”, I opened up the credits and there was a young Wayne Bergeron playing lead trumpet. He inspired me to become a lead player as well as a soloist. Incredible playing on this piece 🔥🤛🏽!!
my personal goal is to be able to play high notes as clear as Wayne, I believe that anyone can play 'high' but to be as clear as Wayne. it's just what I want
Absolutely wonderful. We need to hear more music from Wayne. I take exception to the Maynard bashers. those people should listen to Maynard in the Fifties and early Sixties. He traveled in cars and buses playing almost every night for night for nine months straight.
The most impressive part is when he returns to the normal register of the horn, and it’s so full and dark, other people would have be all over the horn looking for the final notes cracking and whatnot, but not him he hit it dead on.
@tpstrat14 Success can be found in overcoming limits. Look at Wayne Bergeron. He overcame the range limit of his trumpet and see how successful he is :) I admit it gets annoying when people just squeal out some "high notes" but Bergeron isn't squealing it out. He plays all those notes, whether growling low or screaming high.
yeah his sound is definitely better than 99 % of all trumpet players, even on a double high D ! There's a video of him live with the Tom Kubis band, and he nails the song, with the same, perfect, "phat" sound... Check out his "Do you Hear what I hear", another Kubis song, pretty amazing too.
I love how he uses a lacquered yellow brass horn, not nickel plated. Something about that to me says he is an ass (trumpet stereotype), but he is modest. A genuinely good person. Granted, that particular horn may just work best for him too.
@bach72star Personally, I call the Top space (Just above the staff) G a high or top G, the same as your notation but this category of "high", or "top" stays until around an F (The space above 3rd ledger line). A super F, this continues until the C (Space above the 6th ledger line), which I then call a double C.
Can't imagine what musician would not like this, sorry to the few thumbs down, this is magnificent. The Phil Cobb arrangement mentioned below is a bit out of style and a tone down I think. Wayne is a superb player and I agree with all the comparisons to Maynard. Much cleaner and spot on. I also agree with comments made earlier about Maynard in his younger days. Get a hold of Maynard Ferguson - Verve Jazz Masters 52, with tracks recorded during the 50's. Maynard's playing is fantastic. He plays beautiful jazz and the upper register is so very clean. I think he became a bit of caricature in the 70's. Just to put it all in perspective, I heard Doc Severinsen at the Canadian National Exposition (CNE) in 1975. Two nights in a row he played the Carpenter's Ballad "A Song for You". After many minutes of up and down the horn, from low G's to Eb above high C, he finished with a run to double Eb. As he did so many times on the Tonight Show, he held the double Eb with one hand on the horn and took the band out with the other. Breathtaking playing two nights in a row, outdoors in a bandshell. Phenomenal!!
I can play the octave above that but its just a squeal. I wasnt sure what I was playing at first but I got out my chromatic tuner and it said C 8. I dont think its possible to play that high and it not be a squeal. Its just something to do to show off to friends. Wayne's high note was beautiful though. Made me think of a violin lol.
@spazzydude9 ACTUALLY, once you leave the staff (G), you are in "high" territory. The G above that (4 ledger lines) it becomes "double." The G above that would be known as "triple." Do you know anything about theory?
Then to hear his story about him being in a frustrated mood while recording and ripped into that note only for him to be required to do it there on out 😂
Ya, the 'kiss' is a context thing. It is the same pop-singers do, especially chicks. It punctuates the power... The more nuanced version is the lead-player tongue-stops when playing in the tutti ensemble scenarios, harder to hear, but damn impressive to others players....
He had to kiss it off so you'd know it wasn't a violin! LOL! But seriously listen to the note, you can actually imagine that it's a violin until the kiss-off.
Kevin Cooney garenntee he can play everything else in between. right now he's playing like a lead trumpet because he knows he's good at it. Someone can't just play like that without practicing everything for years on end.
It’s ok but I like it slower this song is holy and it needs respect when you play it you got to go deep so that when people hear it they feel the love of Jesus Christ. Marry Christmas everyone God bless America 🇺🇸
That is probably the most pleasant sound in the upper register I have ever heard. Go Wayne!

recently broke that cap myself, and the grind to get there is real. I know that feeling of your first double C.

Bob Bly
His double notes are so powerful and clean it's almost unreal.
Wayne>Maynard
@@jasoncostello1535 Wayne is almost pure commercial, while Maynard was literally the foundation of what Wayne grew from.
Wayne made Maynard sound good plenty of times taking up the slack
