This is part two of our #offgrid #cabin #foundation build in the great north woods of Maine. Our land is extremely #remote , come along for the adventure as I try and lay out the most simple blue print for a off grid hand built cabin.

I agree about the mice. I think that a Sheet metal mice guard would be a better and easier mouse shield. Especially since there is plenty of air circulation underneath. That OSB could soften around the edges from capillary action from the sides.

@@Practicalforest Okay. I built a place when we had to park 6 miles from the road and bring everything in behind a snowmachine or ATV/UTV. I built a 12x16 with all 2x6 walls and an 18/12 pitch roof so I could walk around upstairs and not worry about snow on the roof when I wasn’t there. I tried to heat it with a small direct vent propane heater and it would not keep up until I insulated the floor. This was just the start as I made a third gable to add another 12x16 which I did and put a wood stove in that. When I was younger we always had at least a half dozen people come out and ride in the winter and fish for salmon in the summer. We usually get 3-6 feet of snow there most winter.

    I watched
this as a first visit to your website. I will make a list if suggestions so you can consider on your next build.
    1. Goid idea on getting that thing off the ground. I am not a fan if OSB under the floor in case the rain wicks off the wall and softens the edges for the mice.
    2. I don't understand cutting those 6x6 so long and then all the trim waste. I would have pre cut them and used a laser to notch the rim joists . Pretty easy to do and it looks like at keast a thirty percent waste factor or more . Hammer drill a center pin to locate the posts accurately and use string lines to get it right. Center pins or galvanized clips after the fact is OK.
    3. Those corner posts could have bern left projecting above the floor with full length studs caging them in. That's how the building will not want to walk on those gravel set stones as they move around a bit with the frost. Even better with full height solid vorners, but probably not practical to drag them through all that mud..
    4. Window and door location.is what I mark first with a red marker and note the rough opening width noting center line and red arrows to the king studs which are rough opening plus three inches. Then and only then should you lay out the regular on center studs. If I can vary the location of a door ir window a few inches and share an on center stud to save lumber, i will do it to save expense and avoid skinny spaces between studs where practical..
    4. I am not a fan of T111 siding. It commonly gets soft at the end grain. If I had to make a horizontal joint, I would certainly use Z flashing where the ends butt together. I would consider using metal siding possibly run horizontally on the building. Use plenty of screws with torx drive to discourage breaking in by thieves. Further security could be accomplished by concertiba wire under the siding or rebar drilled in the walls at least four feet high. Consider a commercial steel door with two deadbolts . Reflective insulation can be had on the interior of roof panels or even on T111 style panels. It makes a world of difference in transmitted heat , but it is not exactly cheap.
Take any or none of my ideas as you see fit. You did very well as a first build. Everyone has their own style. My style would be to show up with completely marked plates or plans with a complete cut list for all the odd short cripple studs and headers. Congratulations on an attitude that you can always learn more.

I am a few steps ahead and my similar footings are 12 months in and have had zero settling or frost heave even with a -15 zero cold soak after rain. I built a post and beam 16x30 and am no longer needing a tent while I work. I’m not new to building and construction but I was amazed at how much harder and satisfying it has been off grid. The sawmill has nearly paid for itself already and it’s framed entirely with oak. My dewalt nailer worked decent for sheathing, but the nails couldn’t suffer the oak and about 1/2 of them bent so had to use screws at times. Keep up the good work. Nice job on the footings and sheeting the underside of the floor for insulation. In colder climates not insulating the floor only makes what ever is used to heat work harder because it heats the air closest to the floor first. I found this out first hand. He had a bunch of friends come out and help him build and I stopped in and suggested he stagger the flooring. He came to me this summer and said he wished he had listened to me. He didn’t do as nice a foundation as you so it is pulling apart. My suggestion was to put another layer of sheeting over the floor bridging the seams. Over here in the U.P OF Michigan exreme large private land companies like Keewanah, Steigers, electric power company would lease lots for pple/families to build off grid cabins. (Hunting camps) Some leases went on for 30 yrs. You would also pay taxes on it. But the catch was no roads, no bulldozing and no cutting trees. You could use the logging trails only with ATV or snowmobiles. These companies then got huge tax breaks for the public use. These cabins were built off old logging roads and landing sites.
Supplies were hand carried all the time. ATV or Snowmobile was also a choice.
So its realistic of what you are doing hand carrying and ATV your supplies over rutted up skidder trails. Lol

SUGGESTION, u could have forged a small road for your truck to make getting supplies easier on yourself, then let it grow back over when ur done if u want that cabin in the woods appeal. I did that then blocked my road with felled timber, but will eventually open it back up bc in the winter, i dont like trekking in essentials through 20 to 40 inches of snow.
The insulation should be stapled to the top of the floor joist thus hanging from the floor joist providing an air barrier closest to the coldest part which would be the ground or outside. Since its just laid in there, the insulation falls to the bottom of the cavity created and cold air gets in on top of the insulstion which is right undernesth your floor. Your floors will still be cold. If stapled from the top of the joist you would then have (from top to bottom)the wood subfloor, the insulation and the air chamber then the bottom piece of osb providing protection. The air barrier or cavity is essentially what provides the barrier to keep the cold out along with the insulation so you want the cavity at the bottom towards the ground then the insulation closest to your floor.
Great vids and hard work. Awesome job

      1. insulate every cavity to all four edges
      2. maintain insulation loft. It's already compressed in your video and it will get worse

Wrong. So young and dumb. Lol. Put the road in. Build it in half the time and plant trees. you don’t even have to plant the trees, just let them moose, maple take over.

@@edbaird7687 congratulations on retirement! 60 acres is a great amount of land. Does it have any structures on it now?
My next cabin builds will be starting with a road. I’ve learned so much by doing and then reflecting on it after.

@@Practicalforest no structures, just a travel trailer camper. I have invested every dime, blood, sweat and effort into putting in fields for deer food plots. Now it’s time for the camp to be built. Full basement block built. 20 x 24. Two-story.no power. Second floor will be left open and unfinished until I decide to do something with that.
