There was never stated that he is not a great driver otherwise he would not be picked up by Ron Dennis. In the MCL period he was treated like gold
as apple of the eye from Ron Dennis. He did great in Formula 3 /Masters so a well deserved F1 seat. He proved his ability at McLaren F1 and picked up his first WDC. After that we all know what happened Caught by Merc adn could not really improve untill which were lucky? That FOM choose for the Hybrid engines which was developed already by Merc.. So since the hybrid period Merc were allmighty that helped him a lot and he didn't really had to fight, because no one had that fast care.. so that is why he got not the wow factor anymore... This was pretty much the most OP driver line-up in history. Equal with Prost-Senna. That MP4/22 was probably pretty slow, but the sheer skill on offer with these drivers covered it. Look at 2008. Hamilton got pretty much the same results as 2007 (like, he was scoring consistent podiums, getting the most poles, always in the thick of the fight), and look at Kovalinen. He only just managed to win. And look at 2006, Montoya-Raikkonen were getting pretty much the same results as Kovalinen in 2008 (Odd podium, mostly in top 5 but not always). These two were incredibly skilled, but Hamilton won 7 titles compared to Alonso's 2 because he was far more cooperative with the team, and was made a lot more level headed decisions (in the second half of his career). Look at how many times Alonso's fallen out with the team. This year (2007), 2014 Ferrari, 2015McLaren, 2017 McLaren. I'm pretty sure they were onto something in 2012, but Fernando basically said he was bigger than the team according to Luca DiMontezemlo. And he knows his stuff, look at the success with Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. So yeah, if you wanna do well at stuff, don't think you know best at everything. It's great to have self belief, but when someone tells you can do better at something, listen to them, analyze it, and then act on it.

The years where TC was banned Massa had the edge), but Alonso was the only driver (bar Mika Hakkinen) to beat Schumacher in a straight title fight and Hamilton is the only driver to surpass Schumi's record, and while it still was his rookie year, STILL matched Alonso. 2016 - DNF/Reliability woes especially Malaysia where he was easily winning, lost title by 5 points
2021 - Abu Dhabi farce, human error title
Anyways it is what it is, Lewis is an all time great and will be remembered for forever.

Alonso couldn't adapt to the Bridgestones, and Lewis was just a rookie. They were both slower than Kimi was 2003-2006. Mark Hughes wrote an article in 2007 where McLaren engineers compared Kimi vs Alonso:
"...they have yet to see the Raikkonen-like devastating high-speed precision that wrings every last gram of speed from the car..... the raw speed doesn't seem to be coming as easy as it did to Kimi."

@@fernandosantos4763 Newey held Kimi back with his unreliable designs. Kimi won the title the first year WITHOUT Newey. Alonso never won without a mass damper. Kimi was the best on the Michelin tyres, that is correct. He definitely was hurt by Michelin leaving.
      Alonso is a talented human.
But Kimi is an alien. A special talent.
Hamilton? We don't fear him either. We saw his mistakes.
