- When looking at Lewis Hamilton's career, it's interesting to see the progression that he's made from his early McLaren years and up to where he is now in 2020, in this video I look at the differences between the Lewis that's dominating now, and the Lewis that went up against Nico Rosberg in the early hybrid era, and why I think that losing to Nico in 2016, was the best thing that happened to Lewis Hamilton.

@sports person Same here. He was a great driver - had the talent for multiple world championships were he not paired with one of the best drivers ever. He was very competitive in 14', which I think people forget - and he was able to get his own championship in 2016; and with what he had to do to win - probably the most satisfying championship in a long time

Rosburg has only won once. Even in the lower categories Rosburg couldn't beat him, Therefore ,there is nothing left unanswered for it to bother hamilton. Its not like it was 2-2 for e.g.
Over all LH has proven Rosburg cant handle the pressure hence why he left as soon as he won ,by only 5 points may I add, Even with all the mistakes he made at the starts.
If anything that should bother Rosburg more rather than hamilton because out of all these years of competiting against him ,he only managed to do it once and then left.🤷♂️.

Yeah hamilton didn't have a very good season in 2016
Overall Nico had more reliability issues than Lewis. In 2014 Nico had 3 such issues. Lewis 2. In 2015, Nico had 2, Lewis had 1. In 2016, Nico had 0, Lewis had 1. Still Nico suffered more.

@@oransjball rewatch the 2017 & 2018 seasons. In 2017, Mercedes had a clear qualifying advantage (party mode..) but Ferrari had a huge race pace advantage. In 2018, the Ferrari & Mercedes were on par most of the season, some tracks suiting one car more.

Lewis changed his diet in 2017. I remember him saying he even changed his approach to qualifying after last season. Overall he seems so much more focused than he was 2016 and prior. The complete driver now and my GOAT.

It is said he even opted to remove the drink mechanism in the car to save weight. Dunno how true so doubtful but wouldn't be surprised with how out of breath he tends to sound in team radios.

Rosberg needed to cut out all distractions in his life, Lewis’s mechanics, Lewis’s car randomly failing to finish more than usual, and racing as well as he could to win. It almost killed him in terms of stress and now he’s living his best married dad life.
I wasn’t a fan but I respect his choices.
Regarding car "randomly failing", well, it is drivers responsibility to properly shakedown faults in testing and look after the car with mechanical sympathy, as Rosberg is engineering minded, he understood mechanical sympathy.
Mark Freeman Hamilton will always turn the car down when he needs to. You shouldn’t blame the driver at all for multiple engine failures out of his control.

@@tensevo Hamilton has the best/near best career reliability rate of all modern era drivers, including Rosberg, so he knows how to look after his equipment. Rosberg had slightly worse reliability than Hamilton in 2013, so applying your logic, it was Rosberg's fault and he lacked mechanical sympathy

I think we all now appreciate just how amazing Nico Rosberg was. I feel like because he and Lewis grew up racing together, they both knew each other extremely well. Because of that, Nico knew what made Lewis tick and found a way to get under his skin. That 2016 championship had many turning points and swings in the championship lead. Some will say Nico won fair and square. Others will say Lewis should have won. Ultimately, unexpected events always emerge over the course of a season and Rosberg prevailed in the end. I’m sure Lewis looks back and regrets a lot of things but he’s a champion. He hates to lose. That’s why he has evolved to this point where he’s pretty much unstoppable. He will never let a ‘2016’ happen ever again. Nico did the best thing by retiring while on top because there’s no way he’d beat this version of Lewis Hamilton.

Safety car things are pretty much just part of racing, we don't really ever look at that to be honest. Set up decisions are exactly that, a decision. You choose to make that gamble. I dont remember the exact details of that weekend, but if you are implying he had a dry setup whilst the rest had a wet one, its probably still his fault considering he couldn't win the race despite having a dry track and a dry setup whilst the rest were on wet setups in a wet race.
That just leaves the Malaysia and Japan. He would have needed to win one of those races and and finish second in the other.
Reliabilty also tends to be a comparison between teammates more then other teams, due the nature of differing equipment. I believe Kimi had engine problems all season too (unless i'm remembering it wrong) so its fair to say that Ferrari engine was not so reliable. If Vettel had 50% more engine issues then Kimi then yes, I'd agree he got unlucky that season (Its just overshadowed by how staggeringly stupid some of his mistakes were)

The hate this man gets kind of annoys me. I am not even a big Hamilton fan, but I dont know how people see anything bad out of this guy. He drives his heart off and is a good person off the track. Maybe sometimes the competitiveness comes out, but I do not think any of his confidence or arrogance is genuine.
It is because he is happy to take full credit when winning, but when losing, he is always looking for some conspiracy against him.

To be beat Lewis in the Championship by just 5 points in 2016, Rosberg had to...
- be given Lewis's Engineers
- receive regular Counselling & Coaching (his own admission)
- have Lewis be handicapped, by him being the "only" driver with a Mercedes engine to suffer MULTIPLE Engine Problems!
- do a Runner, claiming he's had enough of F1 & wanted to spend time with his family (yet he's STILL creeping around f1 like a nomadic cockroach, bitching about Lewis at every opportunity)
FINALLY... the Late Great Nikki Lauda let the cat out of the bag when he blew a gasket, fuming when asked for his thoughts on Rosberg running off ... "I'm disappointed & angry, because we gave Nico the Championship & this is how he repays us!"

The fact that Lewis had so many bad starts in 2016 and that failure in Malaysia and only finish 5 points behind Nico shows what an unbelievable driver he is.
He learnt his lesson after that loss and stepped his game up. Came back stronger, became more complete and nearly flawless.
One of the greatest F1 drivers ever.
It also helps that the car is superior, especially 2019-2020
Rosberg had many bad starts too. And was even more inconsistent.
The starts were his fault.
TBH that failure in Malasia was the tip of the iceberg. Rosberg had near bulletproof reliability that season wheras Hamilton had 4 mechanical issues in the first 8 races. By comparison Rosberg had about 3 all season.
At the end of the season Hamilton knew that if he had been better prepared for the early races, made better starts or not slowed down at the end of the previous season he would have won dispite his bad luck. Since then he has improved in those areas and he works hard to get the best result at every opportunity and mitigates his errors so that he doesn't need to worry about bad luck.

A little off-topic, but shoutout to FLoz for creating the "Silver War" documentaries and *capturing* the tension the Mercedes rivalry *SO* well!
Also, got to give you credit for *emphasizing* Hamilton's bad starts. In fact, iirc, Rosberg used that to his advantage BIG TIME by changing his exercise routine, specifically his leg muscles, to give him the edge in race starts! The extra boost also seemed to have irked Lewis as he wanted to know where that extra *little bit* of performance came from.
Edit: Found out where I found this information. It was from the Beyond the Grid podcast. The leg muscle thing is half-true; it did help him gain lap times, but it was Nico redesigning the *gloves* he was wearing that gained him the edge in the starts! INCREDIBLE how detailed he was with very much *everything* when he raced against Lewis.
Exactly, while Hamilton may’ve been unlucky with reliability he could’ve made up for it by avoiding bad starts.

Respect to Nico - there isn't one driver who doesn't deserve a world crown - even in a dominant car (Mansell 92, Prost 93,Vettel @ RB etc.) - titles are not gifted. Nico really had to dig deep and despite a couple of DNFs for Lewis , no one should belittle his achievement - if anything that year raised both their stock values.

Absolutely. I believe Nico took that championship. Lewis did not lose it. Lewis is perhaps the best driver ever. So Nico deserves full credit.

In a very bad car Rubens won in 2008 but like Kvyat in 2015 and Coulthard in 1997...wins in such cars should not be exaggerated. Button had far more wins and poles in 2009. In 2006-2007 when the Honda was kinda decent Button outscored him 61-30. Rubens became formidable in the winter of 2004. He was dedicated to beating Schumacher. He failed, but had a far better season than Irvine ever had against a healthy Michael. His points ratio of 79% was similar to Brundles in 1992. This was a better Michael with a masterful team on his grips. Rubens tied Piquets 1987 record of 7 2nd places whilst Michael had 13 wins. Rubens was beat by Brundle in 1994 but was faster over one lap. By 1996 he easily outpointed the skilled veteran, but had less one lap pace. Irvine was 9 years older than Rubens and Martin 16...this enabled them to get in the youngsters head. Martin only lost in both qualifying and points over a season to Hakkinen and Schumacher...Belloff I'm not sure. Rubens also bested a rookie Hulkenberg easily despite the talented youths excellent pole...in a weak Williams. What Nico did to Palmer and Gutierrez is well established.. as is his moderate beating at the hands of Perez and Ricciardo. Button was less able to adapt to his cars declining characteristics like Michael in 2000. Unlike Michael there was no enormous budget to reestablish the cars superiority. Crazy Yankee documented how in 2000 Rubens seemed to step up when Michael had a bad lull. Buttons lull was the entire final 40% of the season. A combination of nerves and a huge lead seemed to upset Jensons performance. However, purported bad luck or not Rubens would never start a season like Jenson did in 2009. Nor would he have done quite as well at McLaren vs. Lewis. Bottas and Sainz have been outperformed by their teammates this year ,but poorer luck has exaggerated the gap.

Great video. Having to fight another team in 17 and 18 also helped Lewis raise his game! He really felt like the whole team was behind him! He was so much more complete as a racer, he would have been world champion driving the Mercedes or the Ferrari in 17 and 2018!

As someone who has only been watching since 2016, this was a great video to watch. I think it really speaks to just how good Vettel was driving in 2017 that he was able to match/beat Lewis for most of the season as well as to how good Valterri is doing right now to be as close as he is.
I'm usually quoting Malaysia 2016 and I'm convinced. I forgot his bad starts and mistakes. He was quite vulnerable cuz of those...

Although Hamilton’s results seem so consistent, the competition is not very far behind. His win is based on the efforts of a team, accumulatively.

I personally think there was some fishy stuff going on in that Merc garage in the 2016 season. Something about how the entire thing went down feels off. It felt as if Nico knew he was going to win and leave. There was a youtube documentary about that year and some decisions Merc management made had me scratching my head asking why?
I think so too. He was hamstrung by his many poor starts and I suspect it's not entirely down to his mistakes, but maybe the way his start procedures setup by Nico's previous mechanics who were then working with Lewis. I mean how often has he lost his positions prior to 2016. Maybe that was what he intimated, when prompted only promising to reveal after his retirement.

Other than in the Monaco pole in 2014, Rosbergs aggression hindered him. Nico admits he can't drive grey as well as Lewis...just goes into black. Austria 2016.... certainly didn't help Nico. In terms of conspiracy, did Vettel run into Nico on purpose at Malaysia? Lol. Strange how someone so good at Monaco in an incredibly dominant car finishes 6th in 2016. The team said it's a mystery....? Conspiracy theories betray a lack of honesty and imagination.
If Mercedes were going to hand Rosberg a title and let him retire. Why wait 3 fucking years to do it? This weird conspiracy that the entire team let Hamilton lose is absurd. Were it true, somebody would've gone to the news companies with evidence and sold the story for MILLIONS. the fact that this hasn't happened yet and not a whiff of it has come near kinda shows that sometimes drivers get unlucky, mechanics make mistakes, drivers make mistakes.
Hamilton is not a god, he's just a good driver. He can, and did, lose to Rosberg, legally.
Rosberg knew he would get dragged by Hamilton the next couple seasons had he stayed to defend his world championship.

They complete each other in different ways. Nico’s claim to fame is he beat Lewis for the 2016 championship with the resulting consequent, the permanent imprint of Lewis in his memory since childhood carting. For Lewis, Nico propelled him to GOAT.

It actually is the best thing that happened to him. Since then he has been driven to be the undisputed best on the grid right now and he is because since 2016 he has won every title for three years in a row. He has made sure a 2016 season would never happen again.

lewis would still have won every title since 2016, but yes the loss may have motivated him. The loss was mainly due to that massive loss of points when Lewis' engine blew in Malaysia, but I think he had a lot of bad race starts that year which cost him some points, falling back as the starts were slow..... and yes you have just mentioned them as I am watching.

Having 2 number 1 drivers on a team has never worked in the history. Senna Prost, vettel richardo, richardo verstappen, alonso hamilton, it goes on and on.

@Aldas While I agree with your general sentiment, it must be made clear Nico wasn't exactly sublime that season. He was more inconsistent than lewis and lost loads of points. Monaco was horrific. He had a bad start in canada and spun later on trying to overtake max. In Germany, he had a terrible start dropping from 2nd to 4th before the first corner. The similar happened in hungary, from 1st to 3rd. I say this, not to disprove your point but to make clear mercedes had a very temperamental clutch that year. Maybe it was toto speech to protect his drivers, but both had terrible starts at different points during the season. Using that as evidence to show lewis' underperformance is inaccurate and unfair.
Secondly, Malaysia was merely the final nail in the coffin for lewis' championship.

Monaco was a track Nico excelled at. He would either have to drive horribly on purpose or Mercedes never found the problem. I don't believe either driver was sabotaged. They tried hard for both drivers but would naturally slightly favour the more spectacular driver. Lewis was box office said Lauda. Some people even argue Lewis won in 2011. That's a lot of sabotage to explain that. McLaren was just screwed up for both Brits. No one argues that Jenson or Nico are GOATS and usually mention their victories to poke at Lewis. I believe they are all time greats who tested an arguable GOAT to his limit. I put Lewis 3rd ahead of Prost, Senna and Schumacher. Both Lewis's most challenging teammates after 2007 lost to very good but not great drivers in a crappy Williams as rookies. One rose to brilliance at BAR before his team crumbled. The other at Mercedes until an even more talented teammate seemingly spoiled his dream...but it was only delayed until 2016. Both decisively beat world champions in decline. Lewis is sent to 10th due to a technical problem in qualifying and finishes 7th. Nico is run into by Vettel and finishes 3rd in a damaged car. Lewis was ahead by 20 points halfway through his 2016 season. Racepace is interesting. Stroll was 2 seconds behind Massa at Australia in 2017 but only was outscored 43-40. You would think such a derided pay driver would be scalped like Palmer or Gutierrez. The only race Massa missed ...Stroll didn't do much...besides being easily faster than a rusty Diresta. Yes, the Canuck had a fortunate podium but kept his car on the track. Massa nearly equaled Lewis with more DNFs in 2008 but was skunked by Alonso. However, he did well against Kimi in 2007 and beat him in 2008. Massa did worse than Fisichella did against Alonso. Yet Kovalainen beat an only 32 year old Giancarlo with equal racepace and superior qualifying. Yet Heikke was the worst of Hamiltons teammates at racepace. He was like Bottas at Monza this year for 65% of the races in 2008-2009. The races where he did well Hamilton did poorly so the cars couldn't be used strategically. Much like RedBull from late 2018 onwards. For 18 of 19 races in 2011 Button averaged only 0.08 seconds slower than Lewis on Saturday yet barely edged Perez in 2013. Perez was only 0.07 seconds slower than the tall Nico in 2016. In his second year at Renault Hulkenberg became King of the Midfield. Ricciardo was only 0.07 seconds faster but decently outscored him which makes you think the Honey Badger would outscore Palmer 100-0 This was Nicos team (but like Rosberg in 2013) a name driver sort of makes it his team his first season with them. Ricciardo was no exception to that rule.

You seem to forget that out of 8 Mercedes Benz driver he was the only one with multiply engine failure. Including back to back failures during qualifying that made him start from last...it was not just Malaysia.
And Rosberg had gearbox and suspension failures which Lewis didn't have. Rosberg was also hit with several driver penalties by the stewards which wouldn't have been penalties today.
So don't be so blinkered.
The gear box didn't stop him from finishing the race. By the time they got to spa lewis started at the back of the field with Fernando because they both ran out of engines...i don't remember nico starting at the back of the field 3 times because of engines. I don't remember him staring at the back of the field at all that season

Huh....Malaysia.....in Malaysia with 15 laps to go while leading the race the supposed engine advantage (brand new engine after spa penalties) blew up again. That was 25 points gone. How do you mention Malaysia and forget what happened at the end..remember u mentioned Malaysia..i would have mention lewis 5 blown starts and not taking nico seriously or seeing him as a real threat. Still only 5 points in the end.. doesn't seem very dominating..seems lucky. Only Mercedes driver that year with ANY engine failure. He had 3 at key moments..especially at Malaysia.

I’ve seen & heard people say “Lewis has no competition.” Truth is he IS the competition. He’s the benchmark. Let that sink in for a second. The dude is so ridiculously good, he’s the standard for everyone else to strive for. That’s nuts. It’s not that there is no competition, or that there are no good/great drivers he’s racing against. He’s just THAT much better than everyone else at the moment. And more importantly he’s found a way to sustain this high ass level of competing. Unreal....

Lewis was a winning machine before the 2016 loss. Toto confirmed that nothing about 2016 really changed Lewis' approach. He was already in his current phase by 2016.

- be given Lewis's Engineers
- receive regular Counselling & Coaching (his own admission)

- do a Runner, claiming he's had enough of F1 & wanted to spend time with his family (yet he's STILL creeping around f1 like a nomadic cockroach, bitching about Lewis at every opportunity)

@@catherinemorgan7836 As a Lewis fan, as you said Nico had to do absolutely everything right and give all that he had in order to become the 2016 world champion, which burnt him down so much he decided to retire. As its said un the video, Lewis was actually quite bad in starts and Nico always got the most benefit from those mistakes which together with Lewis DNF at Malaysia was the key to that championship.
It was dissapointing that he lost that championship by a really small margin and its also dissapointing that he couldn't fight back against Nico, but in my opinion its disrespectful to say that a driver who gave it all was gifted such an achievement.

Also you're right, I feel like if Nico Rosberg didn't retire, then he would have taken away a lot of wins & poles and maybe even a championship (2020/21) if Hamilton has similar luck to 2016 with Max always bothering

I think Rosberg was the smarter driver, especially that 2016 season, but Lewis learned from that and is now one of the smartest of all time. Nico played mind games on Lewis and knew his car better. That being said I think Lewis was, and still is, a better driver overall, but that season Nico had the upper hand. I hope one day we know what really happened behind the scenes that season, and I think when people know that they will appreciate both Nico and Lewis a lot more
@Zani Della Nico being "smarter" doesn't hold up to scrutiny. In 2014, mercedes gave him a comprehensive dossier, showing how Hamilton managed to save fuel while lapping faster. There's been countless instances of Rosberg requesting Lewis' setup during the races. It was the primary driving force behind the radio ban, because it was suggested drivers were being overly assisted by their engineers and weren't driving unaided as per the regulations.
Rosberg wasn't smarter-he'd often get his engine settings wrong (see Spain 2016 for an example) and often needed coaching see Britain 2016

Rosberg's retirement will always allow us to speculate: what if he actually ran from 2017? I have never been a Rosberg fan (and even though I've watched your video on why he's underrated, Aldas, I still can't see him as an excellent driver; for me, he's always been, like, medium to good at best), but who knows, maybe he could have won a second or even third championship.
Do you think he's stepped up his game or do you think he's simply under less pressure from Bottas and therefore isn't forced into mistakes? Remember Rosberg had a few years with Schumacher who played head games on Rosberg. Rosberg used all the same tricks against Hamilton and got into his head during 2016. Something I don't think Hamilton had ever experienced before. Bottas refuses to go that far to win and that's why he stands no chance against Hamilton.
This is why I want to see another team on the Merc pace all season with strong drivers that can properly challenge, I think the errors would start creeping back in if he was put under pressure.

It’s also important to remember in 2016 , not just the bad starts that cost Hamilton the championship, Lewis had engine and gear box issues or reliability issues... by far of both Mercedes cars and customer cars , but he won 10 races to Nico,s 9 ..nico took himself to a very dark place to win the 2016 championship.. he was lucky & fortunate at the same time . Not in Hamilton’s league.

I don't know who you are mate. But you're bang on here. Losing to Rosberg has been the best thing that has happened to Hamilton as a racing driver.
I've been the saying the same thing since 2017. Rosberg wouldn't have beaten Hamilton in 2016, post 2016.
Ultimately, it was the reliability that cost him the title. Its not even the Malyasia DNF, he had a bunch of issues at the start of the season that were causing him to start at the back, and then took an engine penalty because of those + the Malyasia blowout. Any of those dont happen, his champion.
HOWEVER. He realised that despite the fact he got screwed by bad luck, if he had driven perfect, he would have won the title. So he made sure to do everything in his power to make sure he would never lose a title due to bad luck again.

I agree with all of that because it was all of that. I myself have mentioned his inconsistency's at certain times while assuming it was a given, but to be the ONLY Mercedes powered car on the grid to have trouble that year is quite another (ironic even). IJS

After 2016 Hamilton definitely was a different person and improved his mental strength a lot. Also worth noting that Hamilton had the most wins (10) in 2016 and still lost to Rosberg (9). Consistency is key.
Huge question marks over the relative reliability of the two cars over the course of a season. Basically a deal was made I think within the team. The fact that Rosberg immediately retired strongly suggests that he didn't expect to do so well the next year. Hardly the actions of a valiant new champion eager to defend his title. Hamilton had to beat his team and Rosberg.

I absolutely agree with you Lewis needed that kick after losing to Rosberg with all those pole bad starts and a couple DNF really made him think and re-evaluate his starts and his on track racing but thanks to Rosberg Lewis became a different animal the best F1 driver of all time in all conditions as well in my opinion
Nico would have still pushed Lewis but in order to win another WDC Nico would have had to keep up an insane level of commitment.
