When you're an albino growing up in those hot Texas summers, before video games, you stay in and master about 5 instruments and become a massive rock star....or at least Edgar did lol
One of the side effects of being albino is supposed to be less energy and stamina. I can’t imagine what Edgar could have done if he was ‘normal’.
Right on Ben! 🤘
Dont forget his brother, Johnny! A fantastik guitar player!❤️🎸👏🔥🤗
@@progqueen5952 💯
Johnny did his part too you betcha!! Never heard anybody play guitar like Johnny Winter. He put Hendrix to shame.
Little known fact: Edgar also served at the refreshment counter and did some drywall work while playing this...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
LMAO!
@AlthaB 82 You win the internet today!
You forgot parking cars and doing the bands taxes as well.
@@tomlafleche332 True! It's a bit weird to have a chuckle at the outstanding musical abilities of Edgar. I'm 63 and I remember when Frankenstein first came out - established a couple of the standard rock riffs you hear all the time now.
Frankenstein has been my
quintessential stereo and speaker sound check...if it can't handle Frankenstein, it isn't up to par 🔥
KLIPSCH!!!!!!!!!
💯
17yrs old my first concert was Edgar Winter Group, Leon Russell, Three Dog Night… unf’nforgettable!!
Awesome!
I'm so jealous!
Young lady, you are absolutely correct! You DID just witness a true Masterpiece by the Maestro, Edgar Winter! 🤘🏻♥️ fyi: The “guy in all white” on the guitar is the amazing Rick Derringer! 💕😍
Back in those days, lots of people, especially guys, went on and on about what a great guitarist Johnny Winter was. And he was really good, but there were a lot of good guitarists around. There was NOBODY like Edgar. There are so many small duets in this piece, and every one of them is tight as a tick. Can you even imagine the amount of rehearsal that went into this performance? God I love this song. At the end, when Edgar is playing the feedback loop, and the drummer is playing the drums, every band member is moving in time with them, even though it is often syncopated, not, syncopated, not. They all knew every note to a T. Miraculous musicianship.
Great reaction! Both Edgar and his brother Johnny are albinos so their hair is genetic. Lol. Frankenstein was standard radio play when I was in junior/senior high school. Regrettably I never saw them live - this performance is way over the top!
Edgar Winter is credited as being the first musician to strap a keyboard on like a guitar as you see him do with his 70s analog synthesizer here. Absolutely great concerts! Another great reaction guys! 👍🏻
Isn’t that Johnny Winter?
@@byzinski thats edgar
@@byzinski Bruh
Edgar Winter will be touring as a member of the Ringo Starr All Starr Band late this Spring/early this Summer and will be performing "Frankenstein" during the shows.
Have been to several of Ringo's shows, they're always a blast. So many best of the best. 👍
The beat the drummer throws down after the second pause is just sick.. Also the secret to 70's rocker hair is to not wash it...
Can you imagine the probability of two albino kids being born into a family with the real last name of Winter and then being two of the most talented musicians ever unfortunately Johnny died Edgar is still alive
Glad they weren't named snowy and frosty
My older sister was in love with both brothers. She saw Johnny and Edgar Winters in concert and she was in Love!
They are right handed LOL. Ricky Derringer on the AXE
The bass player is Dan Hartman of "I can dream about you" fame.
He explains this song how it was named and how it came together besides his brother & family I can’t get enough of this
Remember playing this on our 8 track EVERYDAY
Legends ahead of their time. Hugely ignored by the mainstream
Now THAT was a MIND BLOWN reaction! Love it!
I remember when I first heard this, the shorter version, on the radio back in the seventies.
There's a couple other songs off that album, "They Only Come Out at Night", that got a lot of airplay. They were "Free Ride" and "Hanging Around". The short guy, in white, is Rick Derringer.
Edgar still performs, in fact he has toured with Ringo Starr's All Star Band.
Saw Rick Derringer a few years back here in Reno Nevada and he still got it..!!!
@@zztij I saw Rick when he opened for Heart back in 1977.
Man I saw him in the 80's play a show in a bar(canada),this was the closing song...blew the roof off that place..and Props to the guitarist Rick Derringer.
Now you need to do the long version of “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. The summer these two songs were out was really odd for music on the radio. Just imagine Granny turning on the radio and this coming out.
The one in all white......looks star struck......LOL. That was great! His name is Rick Derringer and he’s had a huge career in different genres of music since the seventies. We used beer as cream rinse in the seventies. And Edgar Winters was a musical genius.
Rick is also an amazing producer and studio guitar player.
Yes he is.
I don't know why, but I love watching this drummer. He seems so into it, so fast and everywhere at once, and yet somehow, he makes it look easy
This was a hit when I was ten. The juke-box at the local Dairy-Bar had this cranking all throughout the spring and summer of 1973. This song is branded to my brain with memories of that time as a kid, lovin' it.
There's no question that this is a masterpiece of art-rock/prog rock (and this isn't even the regular guitarist - Ronnie Montrose was unable to perform here, so Edgar's producer Rick Derringer filled in) Edgar, obviously, is an impressive multi-instrumentalist, and used those skills to the full on this song. The song as it is played here is indeed a "Frankenstein" of sorts: the various themes in the song had been played as warm-up jams (referred to simply as "The Instrumental") at Edgar (and Johnny) Winter concerts - needing a final song for the album "They Only Come Out at Night", Edgar wanted a high-powered instrumental, and started splicing together reel-to-reel tape recordings of various performances. Drummer Chuck Ruff saw the apparent hacked and slashed tape all over, and said "Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein." ... and the song was named!
As to Dee's question "Where do you go next?"? To Gentle Giant, of course! One of the few bands to use even more instruments in a single song than Edgar :-)
ruclips.net/video/QItbuIzYhs8/видео.html
Another option is Mike Oldfield - whose most famous work - "Tubular Bells" was originally recorded with almost all of the fifteen or so instruments, using an early version of overdubbing. This version has multiple instrumentalists, but is an excellent version ...

I grew up with the Edgar winters group. Back then nice song to trip with. I am 65 now and don't do that anymore.
I grew up listening to music like this and got to see the Edgar Winter Group in 1987. So fantastic!!!
You all forgot that Edgar was also a Roadie and relief driver for the group!😎🤣🤣Stay safe.
Back when musicians were Real musicians. Edgar winter group incredible! Got to see them in my younger days. Frickin great show.
Now you have to check out Johnny Winter doing DIVIN DUCK , live at Rockpalest , or if you want more blues , then check out Johnny Winter doing MISSISSIPPI BLUES , live at Rockpalest , you will enjoy !!!!!
It's not fair, brother! 😭 When God handed out talent, how many times did this man jump line! Great reaction with the beautiful Mrs! I think she would love miles Davis and John Coltrane 'blue in green' also an old b&w video of 'So what' I hope you consider it!
That guitarist is Rick Derringer, best known for his solo hit, "Rock 'n Roll Hoochie Koo" and "Hang On Sloopy" when he was with The McCoys.🔥😁❤✌
My kids and I were privileged enough to see Edgar Winter live in 2017 as he and his band opened for Alice Cooper and even though he’s much older now, he still brings it and doesn’t hold back. He still has powerful vocals and still plays that keyboard with the strap, and still plays the sax and the drums and my kids and I were dumbfounded and stared at each other with our eyes wide open and mouths wide open. Edgar Winter plus Alice Cooper equals perfection.
Saw them in concert in 1995. They were just as good live as in studio. So much energy. The one in white is Rick Derringer. Check out his song Rock and Roll, Hoochie-Koo.
Also go way back to his days with the McCoys and Hang On Sloopy.
I hardly think Rick Derringer was star struck. He had major hits of his own with the mcCoys and was the producer on the studio album. Edgar and Rick made a good team tho.
One can not watch this without it changing you...forever! Whenever it's been a crappy day, this clears the cobwebs! Perfection!
My very first album I bought with my baby sitting money was Shock Treatment. I love the way he blends rock, funk, jazz and blues to his music.
He was ahead of his time in music. I was in High School with him and his brother Johnny. It’s great to see him recognized for his talent. Thank You for this….❤️
Never saw...I watched his brother Johnny....excellent blues guitarist.
R.I.P Johnny...
I saw Edgar live twice in the same small club, and Johnny once in the same club. It’s mind blowing watching Edgar perform Frankenstein for the first time. My and my buddies loved this song on the radio when we were kids, but I never knew he played all those instruments until I saw him live.
I saw this performed in a bar, front row with my feet on the stage. The single greatest display of talent ever!!!
Saw Edgar Winter and Jeff Beck in concert many years ago. They were amaing!!
Also check out the studio version. Very tight version with Edgars’ logic for both restraint and soloing. This was a blast from the past, to be sure. 🤘
Love it!! Please bring back the days of talented artists like this. Talanted musicians who work together for years and are capable of producing outstanding musical and vocal works.
Great reaction!
You can't imagine how we felt when this came out in '73. Was nothing like it at the time, and I was fortunate enough to get to see both the Edgar Winter Group and the Johnny Winter Group about a year apart in Nashville. Two fantastic concerts!
From 65 to 74. All music. Jazz, Blues, Rock,Soul, Country, Gospel, was Mixed together! Get more into Woodstock. Blood Sweat And Tears. Gig. Canned Heat!! Everyone came together ✌️🍷🐴👍🥞
I had the great pleasure of not only seeing them do this song at that time, but I also saw Edgar Winter's White Trash twice, Johnny Winter once solo, Johnny Winter And, and Johnny and Edgar in concert together. Great days man.
this, and santana's "soul sacrifice" woodstock performance, are two of the greatest.
You hit the nail on the head "When you witness greatness" !!!!
This song got its name from how it was pieced together in the studio from edited strips of recording tape. One of the members of the band suggested it was like Frankenstein. The song's origins came from the band jamming around several different versions of this during their performances. When it came time to record They Only Come Out at Night, the album on which this song appears, it was the last song they included (because they needed one more song to fill the album), but before that there had never been a specific version of the song.
This song was written. While. In his brother Johny's group. When they spliced the first recording together. The tape was everywhere. Someone remarked this looks like... Frankenstein. Which I think is much better than the working title the 2 Drum Song.
Not may people have mastered playing the ARP 2600 synth like Edgar Winter. The whole band were hella talented, but Edgar is a damn legend.
When they were doing this live at first they just called it the drum song
When they finally decided to record it they realized it was way to long for an album cut
So they set about editing it and the cut up pieces of tape strewn all over wondering how they were going to put it back together
One of them said it's like Frankenstein and that's how it got its name...lol
It is so wonderful to watch Dee as she APPRECIATES cool music!! You've got yourself a GREAT gal there! Member of the DEE FAN CLUB here!!!!
Chod..... No worries, love you!!!! There is nothing wrong with you breaking your own rules every once in a while.... Even if you are the absolute best at the particular thing... Great song. It's worth it!!!
and this ladies and gentlemen is how you make a musical Frankenstein. i love this. thank you for the reaction smiles and love
THE EG Group was sadly very short lived but they made a huge mark with They Only Come Out At Night and Shock Treatment . ..I appreciate her really seeing the talent her for what it was and still is because they have been overlooked at times compared to other big well knowns but once you really give the EWG a chance ,their sound will stay with you ...
Edgar is a music genius it makes me wonder if he opened a portal to another world with this performance?
This video is backwards because all the guitar players and bass player are all playing left-handed when they are right handed guitar players and I know that Rick Derringer is right-handed. Edgar Winter is playing all the low notes on the high part of the keyboard and vice versa. Kind of funny
That's what some of those synthesizers looked like back in '73, with Edgar working the knobs.
☮️💜. And he’s still rockin
I actually got to see him once backing up the Allman Brothers opening act for The Allman Brothers Band Boston Garden late 70s early 80s
Lol Chod. I had to come back to comment on you calling this period a “Garden of Eden”musically. I’ve been saying that forever. Truly one of the most creative and innovative era’s in the history of popular music, throughout all genre’s. Dee’s response just says it all. It’s art. 🤯
Edgar was the ultimate musician period.
Hahaha... Glad that you loved it . Grew up with him and his amazing family in Carson . RIP Chuck . And thanks Man .
When Edger Winter runs out of instruments to play he plays the sound system
I had the honor of seeing this multi -talent in 1974 Tucson Arizona. Even at the age of 13 I couldn't help but notice the musicianship this whole group possessed.
Nobody takes the time to create "Masterpieces" like this anymore. Great song to watch live.
Great reactions! Such a pleasure to see how much you enjoyed this as I did when I first saw The Edgar Winter Group live on Feb
3. 1973 at Winterland in San Francisco. The album had just been released in November '72. Unbelievable how they could perform Frankenstein live, and do it better than the studio version. Of course the hallucinogens of those times were very helpful in expanding the communal experience of the entire concert. Also, a big shout out to Rick Darrenger on guitar who also produced this song. Peace and Love to all!
Just can't help but smile where you listen to it. Great reaction Everybody keeps strong and positive
Edgar Winter strapped a keyboard into a keytar. If I recall due to Edgar and Johnny both having albinism it caused several vision defects and very high sensitivity to light and sun exposure. While their young school age friends were playing outdoors, Edgar and Johnny were forced to stay indoors. So their focus became playing and experimenting with an assortment of musical instruments
Edgar Winter is such a good sax player that he has been featured on recordings by a lot of top artists, playing the saxophone: Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, David Lee Roth, Todd Rundgren, and many others. The man is a monster, thus "Frankenstein" makes even more sense.
You like the hair...you too can have hair like that...if you're an albino! Both Edgar and his brother Johnny are (were) albinos. My first concert ever was Edgar Winter's White Trash with the same lineup we've seen here (incl. Rick Derringer, a star in his own right) back in 1973. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. The 'Tobacco Road' album is great.
Hi you guys, both Edgar and Johnny Winter were albinos---beautiful white hair---beautiful music. Keep listening.
The inventor of the keytar.
His twin brother Johnnie played a bit of guitar. Tommy Shannon was his bass player. Tommy then played bass for Stevie Ray Vaughn.
If you want to hear Edgar sing try Tobacco Road live.
Edgar was the first person to take the legs off a keyboard and attach a guitar strap to it. Frankenstein's Monster was stitched together from different peoples body parts, Doctor Frankenstein's assistant Igor when stealing the proper brain, dropped the jar and then reached on a shelf and got the brain of a murder with the IQ of a child (honk - honk) during the synthesizer section, Dr. Frankenstein brought the Monster to life using lighting to power his machine. The guitarist in white was young Rick Derringer.
Iconic song. Crazy time signature!!!!
Jazzy, a banger/ jam.
D brought tears to my eyes. And Chad was over the moon sharing this with his wife. Amazing stuff. Great reaction. Peace
One of the Baddest Jams in the Land, of that there is no doubt.
You guys are great. Great reaction! The winter brothers were part of my musical upbringing.
About ten yrs ago I went to there concert out doors and they sound as good as that video ! You guys rock
That is one awesome jam session!
Yes he also plays guitar and sings👍
I had this on record in 1973 at age 19! The Winter brothers are worth a listen!
Always loved this song, but never saw this amazing version/performance before. Thanks for reviewing/reacting to it!
Great reaction from both of you!
Whoop Whoop!!!! This is one of the best songs evah!!!! Thank you!!!!
I love that you guys are both so open. I heard he and his brother many times live in the seventies. Geniuses. Much love to you both.
Saw them perform this in July of 1974. I was 14, and my first outdoor concert.
I've never seen this before...Thank you....Fantastic!!!
🎼Masterpiece🎼
Great song I have never seen this version. I’m old I grew up with Edgar Winter. He was my brother’s favorite back in the 70s. Boy you would put this song on and if you had good speakers you would get a treat as the sound would literally be spinning around your head like surround sound
Those guys are and were stars on their own as well. The late bassist Dan Hartman wrote several songs to other artists and had a solo career as well. Guitarist Rick Derringer also has had successful career as solo artist and producer. On the recorded version the guitarist was Ronnie Montrose, another star quality guitarist and group leader.
This is one of those songs where headphones are needed for full effect.
The glorious 60s and 70s man i am glad I was there ✌️🇬🇧🧐
Love this reaction 😆
I saw him live in the summer of 1976 in Birmingham AL. Thanks for the reaction... good stuff
Not a well know fact but U.F.O sightings went way up when they played this song.😁😁
I saw them live in the mid 60's
Believe it or not kids this sounds just like the record we all heard a million times. This is not improvised but rather note for note. Fantastic performance
When I saw him , he opened for Alice Cooper when this song first came out ! We sat maybe 30 feet from him, he was set up on our side of the stage, cuz of all the stuff Alice had set up, when he closed with this song it was done exactly like this ! Took a long time for me to close my mouth !
U need to listen to his interviews so amazing 🤩
They all are killing it!
