Blood, Sweat & Tears was actually a reaction to Chicago. Al Kooper saw Chicago in California and decided to put a similar band together in New York. BS&T even released their first album ahead of Chicago's, which was still in negotiations with the record company.
This requires an entire album listen. A darkened room, headphones or superior speakers. Psychoactive substance optional. All four sides. The original vinyl is wonderful. The songs meld together and make the whole greater than the sum of the parts.
Terry Kath's soulful voice and guitar playing are powerful! Chicago's horns section and overall instrumentation are legendary! I had the pleasure of seeing Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire perform together in St. Paul, Minnesota several years ago! Both groups horns sections and vocals ROCKED the house! The song's ending is legendary!

I have been listening to classic Chicago all week. My brothers were a decade older than me and played trumpet and trombone. They loved Chicago and I adopted their record collection very early on, lol. I've seen Chicago live. Such an incredible band! I love this song!

Terry Kath, (the guitarist) is in my opinion one of the greatest guitar players of all time. (I don’t believe in the concept of GOAT, but I DO believe in a collective GOAT category. Chicago II is an incredible piece of work, and in my humble opinion, I think it is Chicago’s best album. I strongly recommend it to anyone that likes Chicago.
This was one of the great songs by James Pankow, Chicago's trombone player, who also did so many tasteful and interesting horn arrangements for the band.

I’ve been a Chicago fan since the beginning. I have listened to their songs over and over again for more than 50 years. I never get tired of their music. It dawned on me years ago why that was. It’s because it’s all feel good music. Many rock and roll bands play music that is more sexually based and at times even nasty. That’s not Chicago, you wouldn’t be ashamed to let your grandmother listen to their music. Every time I listen to Chicago makes me feel good.

Funk, jazz, blues and rock, this band was extremely versatile during the Terry Kath era. Kath played lead guitar and was also the lead vocalist on Make Me Smile.
Chod, they didn't change their style ... Terry Kath, the lead guitarist died from an accidental gunshot wound to the head (was playing around with it, thinking it was NOT loaded). He was the main driving force to the band's sound. The person who took over lead vocals was their bass player, Peter Cetera, another of their lead vocalists. He's ok, just not as good, nor do they write as good of songs anymore without Terry's input and ideas. The 3rd of Chicago's vocalists was/is Robert Lamm, but he doesn't seem to sing much anymore. So, it wasn't so much an old and new, as it was the original and what was left after their "soul" died.
Correct, after Terry's death the record company insisted they release love songs after having a couple of love song hits. Their heart died along with Terry.
Saw Chicago and Doobie Brothers concert in 1974, they were phenomenal! Also, there's a tribute band from Russia (Leonid & Friends) that does amazing covers of Chicago songs on RUclips, including this one. They are touring right now and I have tickets for them at end of May - worth checking out!

Listened to them home alone with headphones and at gatherings with friends. But, in spite of their great horn section, I never associated Chicago with marching bands. Thanks for the memories.
I grew up with this great band from the 70's-80's. They were a rock & roll band with horns & blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, & pop music. They had a lot of great songs such as "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?", "Beginnings", "Questions 67 & 68", "I'm A Man", "Where Do We Go From Here?", "Free", "Lowdown", "Saturday In The Park", "Colour My World", "You're The Inspiration", "Will You Still Love Me?", "Look Away", "Feelin' Stronger Every Day", "Old Days" etc.
I always feel like I'm pestering reactors about why I love early Chicago, but I feel a little more comfortable commenting to a drummer how one of my biggest heroes in music is Danny Seraphine. Everyone else is always talking about the vocalists or the guitars, and that's great. But there is something I always enjoyed about Seraphine, and that's not that he's a lunatic or loud or overpowering; I think he's a brilliant drummer in how he's done his fills in all the early Chicago songs. Virtually no one EVER reacts to "Beginnings," which I feel is a showcase for Seraphine. And the recording was nice and dry. No echoes, just solid hits on the toms. Just sayin'. "Make Me Smile" has one of his classic fills before the instrumental lead-out, but "Beginnings" does the same. I just wish more reactors would do it. And NOT the live version, which totally obscures the drums.
My favorite song for over 40 years by Chicago and image the look on my face when I purchased for the first time the cd itwas on and I found out it was the beginning and the end of a 12:55 minutes song. Threw me, but the whole piece is great.

Terry Kath singing. His gravelly voice has often been likened to "the white Ray Charles" and is very accurate comparison. If one listens to the music/songs that follow they all tie into one another, thus creating the "Ballad for a girl from Buchanon" as was written by the trombonist - James Pankow. Also, on the album, this song is interrupted by the accompanying songs and then the ending of Make Me Smile returns for the ending of the ballad.
This band had some tight butt horns! And yes, it was in the hippie era! These guys had so much versatility. I disagree though this is the kind of tune that can pick me up on a down day. Early Chicago was my favorite. "Questions 67 & 68" is amazing. And yes, my 67 year old knees are telling you to take it very easy on yours!
Go to the band's debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority and check out "Poem 58" for pure FUNK! That track with Terry Kath on guitar more than any other displays why when Jimi Hendrix saw the band playing at The Whisky A Go Go he spoke to them between sets and told them, "you guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me!"

Oh, you could go down a rabbit hole of great old Chicago music! You guys NEED to check out the Russian band Leonid & Friends who initially did a bunch of awesome covers of Chicago tunes and more recently they have covered E,W&F, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Steely Dan, which are equally jaw-dropping. The leader is a producer/musician in Moscow and the remaining members are Russian session musicians and singers, except the lead singer, Sergei, who is Ukrainian (unfortunately, the band just released a statement that Sergei was taking a leave from the band because of everything him and his family are dealing with in Kyiv). The leader, Leonid Vorobyov, has been a huge Chicago fan since he was a child and he got the other musicians together to produce a couple tribute videos, but they went viral, so they kept on producing them. Leonid had to do the arrangements of the songs himself by transcribing from the recordings because there were no scores available in Russia at the time (and they are absolutely meticulous). They have also done two tours in America in 2019 and 2021 and there's another scheduled for this year (I saw them in 2019 and I have tickets for a show in MA in July). This version is the "single" release of "Make Me Smile" from Chicago's eponymous second album and is actually two tracks edited together. "Make Me Smile" by itself is the opening track of a seven movement suite titled Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". The single release appended after the guitar solo the closing track of the suite, " Now More Than Ever", which is a reprise of" Make Me Smile". There are three instrumental movements and four with vocals. Terry Kath has lead vocals on " Make Me Smile", Colour My World", and "Now More Than Ever". Keyboard player Robert Lamm sings lead vocals on the second movement, "So Much To Say, So Much To Give". You really need to experience the entire suite in one sitting to appreciate the talents of Chicago's members and the ensemble as a whole. There's Chicago with Terry Kath and then there's sappy ballad "Chicago Lite" after Terry's accidental death in 1978. Everything after Chicago XI is the post-Kath era and is drastically different from their roots as a rock band with horns.
"Beginnings" First song on Chicago's (they were called CTA then) first album. Introduces the world to their style with everyone having a solo to showcase their talent. Wow what talent they have. Check it out. You will not be sorry.
The first song on the first album is "Introduction", written by Terry Kath and lead vocalist is Terry, and it does introduce the band to the listener and asking the listener to give the band a chance to play for them. "Beginnings" by Robert Lamm is the third track. That entire double LP debut is LIT! Interesting enough is that at the end of the last song on the album, "Liberation", Terry also sings the only line in it, "Ohhhhh, thank you people!", thanking the listener.
Wished I had you both at my condo for a reaction video. I have 5000 lps including this album playing through some tube amps. You can hear the difference between studio cut and a live track. You would only listen to the studio tracks because they have more bite vs the live track. The thing is back in the day there was no auto-tune and computer generated pablum that is being released today. Members of bands had to have real musical talent back then.
Chicago used more then one singer. But in this song, Singer and lead guitar player Terry Kath ( who sadly died from an accidental gunshot at only 31) was called “Best Guitarist in the Universe.” ~ by Jimi Hendrix - High praise from the original Guitar God himself.

Great music from an iconic, legendary band. Love the drums in this one but I don’t get marching band vibes. All the albums with Terry Kath were either great or good. After he died, the band went in a different direction, and although they had tons of hits, my opinion is that they were just not the same and become much more pop oriented. 🔥

If one listens to the music/songs that follow they all tie into one another, thus creating the "Ballad for a girl from Buchanon" as was written by the trombonist - James Pankow. Also, on the album, this song is interrupted by the accompanying songs and then the ending of Make Me Smile returns for the ending of the ballad.
This band had some tight butt horns! And yes, it was in the hippie era! These guys had so much versatility. I disagree though this is the kind of tune that can pick me up on a down day. Early Chicago was my favorite. "Questions 67 & 68" is amazing.
And yes, my 67 year old knees are telling you to take it very easy on yours!

Go to the band's debut album as The Chicago Transit Authority and check out "Poem 58" for pure FUNK! That track with Terry Kath on guitar more than any other displays why when Jimi Hendrix saw the band playing at The Whisky A Go Go he spoke to them between sets and told them, "you guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, and a guitar player that's better than me!"
Someone had made a comment before that this is the first song of " Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" a mini-rock opera. It's around 13minutes. It's worth the listen.

Oh, you could go down a rabbit hole of great old Chicago music! You guys NEED to check out the Russian band Leonid & Friends who initially did a bunch of awesome covers of Chicago tunes and more recently they have covered E,W&F, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Steely Dan, which are equally jaw-dropping. The leader is a producer/musician in Moscow and the remaining members are Russian session musicians and singers, except the lead singer, Sergei, who is Ukrainian (unfortunately, the band just released a statement that Sergei was taking a leave from the band because of everything him and his family are dealing with in Kyiv). The leader, Leonid Vorobyov, has been a huge Chicago fan since he was a child and he got the other musicians together to produce a couple tribute videos, but they went viral, so they kept on producing them. Leonid had to do the arrangements of the songs himself by transcribing from the recordings because there were no scores available in Russia at the time (and they are absolutely meticulous). They have also done two tours in America in 2019 and 2021 and there's another scheduled for this year (I saw them in 2019 and I have tickets for a show in MA in July). This version is the "single" release of "Make Me Smile" from Chicago's eponymous second album and is actually two tracks edited together. "Make Me Smile" by itself is the opening track of a seven movement suite titled Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon". The single release appended after the guitar solo the closing track of the suite, " Now More Than Ever", which is a reprise of" Make Me Smile". There are three instrumental movements and four with vocals. Terry Kath has lead vocals on " Make Me Smile", Colour My World", and "Now More Than Ever". Keyboard player Robert Lamm sings lead vocals on the second movement, "So Much To Say, So Much To Give". You really need to experience the entire suite in one sitting to appreciate the talents of Chicago's members and the ensemble as a whole.
There's Chicago with Terry Kath and then there's sappy ballad "Chicago Lite" after Terry's accidental death in 1978. Everything after Chicago XI is the post-Kath era and is drastically different from their roots as a rock band with horns.
"Beginnings" First song on Chicago's (they were called CTA then) first album. Introduces the world to their style with everyone having a solo to showcase their talent. Wow what talent they have. Check it out. You will not be sorry.
The first song on the first album is "Introduction", written by Terry Kath and lead vocalist is Terry, and it does introduce the band to the listener and asking the listener to give the band a chance to play for them. "Beginnings" by Robert Lamm is the third track. That entire double LP debut is LIT!
Interesting enough is that at the end of the last song on the album, "Liberation", Terry also sings the only line in it, "Ohhhhh, thank you people!", thanking the listener.

Wished I had you both at my condo for a reaction video. I have 5000 lps including this album playing through some tube amps. You can hear the difference between studio cut and a live track. You would only listen to the studio tracks because they have more bite vs the live track. The thing is back in the day there was no auto-tune and computer generated pablum that is being released today. Members of bands had to have real musical talent back then.

Great music from an iconic, legendary band. Love the drums in this one but I don’t get marching band vibes. All the albums with Terry Kath were either great or good. After he died, the band went in a different direction, and although they had tons of hits, my opinion is that they were just not the same and become much more pop oriented. 🔥
