Don't know if you'll see this but I want to thank you! This Car has been sitting here for months because I haven't had the money to get it fixed. I did the relay fix yesterday and drove it all day! Thanks for everything!
Greetings from Ghana in west Africa, I am most grateful to you for this case study which has really helped me solved the "LIMP HOME" mode of my PT Cruiser 2007 Touring edition. I consider this video and explanation very helpful. Thanks and God bless you.
All cars in 2020 will have additional codes to select if a) Eric O, b) Ivan T, is interrogating CAN BUS, Then will connect and post automatically to RUclips. Another great video Ivan.
coming soon, encrypted can bus, so that nobody but dealer can work on them.......... about the time they all go bankrupt and all the top brass gets hung/shot/stabbed/poisoned to death. oh but they'd love to do just that, I can hear them all seething over it ;)
What a great video...I have fixed 2 of these in past 8 months. Honestly It took me longer than you to figure this nightmare out. I am now comfortable when one of these pos rolls into the shop
TIPM: Terribly Implemented Problem Module. My biggest concern was a harness problem near the transmission, and the engine rocking/vibrating during startup was causing a short/open. Awesome job testing at the TIPM to rule that out! :D
My sister in law had the same problem 2007 PT Cruiser. The local trans shop said they would not work on it so I inherited the problem. I first replaced the fuse box without success so next was a new (rebuilt) PCM and that fixed it. Battery and alternator were checked OK. Drove me nuts.
"I think we're going to have to tear the TIPM apart." I rub my hands together briskly saying to myself "Oh, yeah! This is gonna be good!" I'm sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for the next episode of "Ivan fixes the unfixable."!
Very nice diagnosis. Great testing. I learned a bit on that. But that's very similar to Eric O's sister on her van with the TIP module. He tore apart and replaced the relay and put all back together. So classic symptom on Chrysler's!!! Lol
I found a lot of time with the electronic sensors units, the first check is to unplug and plug while wiggle them which can clear oxidation of the metal connector. Have very good luck with this as often the thing starts to work.
Customers must love seeing their vehicles diagnosed and fixed by you expertly. As opposed to a snotty mechanic that you might suspect in causing more damage by accident or not.
Hey thanks a lot for your video. My pt cruiser was doing the same same thing. Your wire splice didn't work for me. Probably didn't have the right wires. So I bought a rebuilt tipm from Maks and installed it. Works perfect now. You steered me in the right direction. Thanks so much.
My experience in repairing TIPMs has not been good. In my neighborhood (about fifty miles East of Ivan's shop) I get quite a few cars whose owners commute on I-80... where calcium chloride brine is used in the winter. I've opened TIPMs, especially on Dakota trucks, where the copper traces have completely delaminated from the circuit board or even dissolved completely. I try to save folks money whenever I can, but I think my track record for resurrecting dead TIPMs is about one-in-ten. Once the salt gets in, they're as good as dead.
I wonder why they were so popular when they came out. If you can remember back to 2001, dealerships couldn't keep them in stock, dealerships had to order direct from the factory if somebody wanted one. I don't know for sure but I think there may still be some PT Cruiser clubs around. What changed from then to now about that car?
@@0386rm the cars got a few miles on them and people saw what a pile they were. Chrysler made a serious mistake with these in that not only was the quality poor, they saddled it with an engine that could barely get out of its own way.
Omg can't believe I found this. My mechanic had my car 8 months trying to get refurbished ecms. The 4th one worked. Then got it home and 3 codes came up off and on...a thermostat...which they had replaced last year. Cleared code and it never came on again days later code came up with #4 misfire, and they had just replaced it all during the 8 months they had it and it had no symptoms. They cleared code again and it never came back. Then engine light came on a week later 0882 and them went off by itself. Few days later it came on again but this time car went into limp mode stuck in 2nd gear. They don't want to work on my car again as they had it 8 months and every mechanic had worked on my car at some point. They agreed to look at my car again and I am going to show them this video.

Same customer later melted the engine down. With the doors that wouldn't latch, cat code, and rear wheels that were ready to fall off after driving 10k miles on completely wasted wheel bearings, it sat in my yard for almost 2 years. Just scrapped it recently - that was a joyous day!! HATE those things!!! 🤬 Can't wait to see inside that TIPM. Another wonder of Chrysler engineering right there. Great diag, Ivan! Just use correct soldering technique (it was cringe City, screaming at the phone how to do it, painful to watch, then sudden success when Eric worked and soldered in a replacement relay on a relative’s TIPM), and everything will be OK.

My mother had a 04 Sebring sedan with 256k on her 2.4. Granted it went through 2 t-belts and w/p's and 1 headgasket, but it ran great. Finally got rid of it when the trans wore out. Oddly enough, the only electrical problem we ever had was an ABS module that died at 165k. Before that she had a 97 Stratus, again 2.4. We sold that in early 04 with just 77k on it but the guy that bought it put another 186k more on it (with lots of work). The 1 was the victim of an accident in which the insurance co. totaled the car. Seems that after 1 had the headgasket oil leak problems solved, they could run a long time.
My ex's brother who I'm still friends with got one of these of the same year for free.. I have done sooooo much on that car.. I fking hate pt cruisers.
Im confident you can fix the TIPM, but I myself would be hesitant in disturbing other circuits, as failure prone as they are. I think I would add an outside relay, and solder/heat shrink the wires. Sorted.
I've done a couple that way with f/p and trans relays on some 05-06s, however, when trying this on newer models, they wouldn't work. The TIPM has resistors and timers inside effectively making them time delay relays and the PCM needs to see those values or it will shut off the signal, and throw codes. The few TIPMs I'd tried to take apart we so smoked, they stunk. The few used 1's I've tried didn't last long. I wanna see Ivan's fix, cuz I think he's gonna try, and since this is such a well maintained low mileage car, he may get lucky. I know Eric O has fixed at least 1, so have other RUclipsrs, but personally for my time, I'm taking Keith's approach: Customer needs and gets a new 1. That's just me.
problem is, many now have "computers" in the tipm that are on the can bus and operate the relays that way. complete stooge engineered junk, with stooge engineered and lies about component duration and testing or they went through "accelerated testing" in a perfect controlled lab environment to curtail the bad outcome ;)
Just my idea, tapping the TIPM with something hard (screw driver handle) should localize the vibration and have less effect on the wiring and connectors. This should localize the testing a little further.
I'll watch all this later but anyone with a late model Chrysler product should have their own cheap code reader, my PT goes into limp home mode about once a month. I keep my code reader plugged in all the time so when it goes into limp home mode I just pull over and use the code reader (any cheap one will do) to erase the code and start the engine and take off again. Not really a fix but works for a while so it is at least a cheap temp fix.
all that and yet everyone still locks the keys in and leaves the lights on, so they made it sense and auto-shutdown, which causes issues for the rest of us..
Is there a way to bypass the tipm like you did in this video on a 2009 Chrysler sebring? I have been searching all over for a wiring diagram and some information on this.
If you look up “fail” in a Michigan dictionary it says: “See Chrysler TIPM” Yet another good video and reason to never own a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/FCA vehicle with their incredibly failure prone poorly designed electrical systems.
Can anyone, including Ivan point me to part two of this particular series......just replaced the TIPM on my g/f's 2k6 Pt Cruiser wagon and now I'm getting codes P0700 and P0882. Love this video and need to find part two so I can get this blasted car going !
If I were you I would tell that customer to get ride of it. When you said Crysler PT and Dodge Neon (which they have the same platform) just put a end to its life.
I wonder why they were so popular when they came out. TIPM relay problems, I had the same problems with the older Ford CCRM relay box. The CCRM had problems with the cooling fan relays and the AC compressor clutch relay. Take it apart and repair.
We used to have a nighttime drunk game called “chase the rabbit “. Off road with four wheelers. They are impossible to hit. Not sure how you got one. You win!
I'd be rich if I had a $ for every Bugs Bunny I've hit over the years... no to mention ground hogs, raccoons, birds, rats, cats, dogs, deer, opossums, geese, ducks. yeah pretty much everything loves to jump in front of me and I don't know why, I feel like father death lol
You are right, I see some similarities with the Jeep Commander video! I bet there is a relay inside the TIPM that is gone bad. If you get the part number off the relay then you may be able to find one and solder it in. Like in the Jeep Commander video I would think an easy fix would be to wire an ignition wire to the TIPM output circuit and problem should be solved!
31:19 Nice fuse box. when you do finally get to the TCM you will discover you cannot troubleshoot them till you remove the gell. Same as the ECU/PCM . Good Luck
What about limp mode sometimes can pull out it shifts great but when I stop and pull back out it pulls out in 2nd gear then like it's got a mind of it's own
Hey Ivan hope u can help me I got a 2006 limited ...sometimes if shifts fine other times it's like stuck In second gear ...I hooked scope to control wire and output and when it don't wanna shift past 2nd both wires are zero volts..also loose communication with scan tool when this happens
You showed a repair on a 2007 pt cruiser in limp mode where you showed the fix by installing a simple old fashioned relay, I am trying to do this exact repair on my 2005 pt cruiser on which the wires you show to hook up to seem to be a different color? Could the 2005 be different? The only wire I can't locate is the last one you attach, yellow/orange I Don't seem to have the yellow/orange. ANY HELP- GREATLY APPRECIATED
2k5 was/is pre TIPM . Just before 7/06, Chrysler, in their infinitely all-knowing minds (LOL) switched to the TIPM as shown here. I know this because my g/f has a 2k6 model and I just had to replace the TIPM.
Had a 2002 neon with limp mode, pain in the ass to figure it out. No access to scanner or diagrams at that time for me. Felt like I was sitting on the ground driving it...bye neon...hello C1500 Silverado.
I have an '01 PT Cruiser with a 5-speed MTX. My PCM looks nothing like this - it is full of old-school relays and fuses. Is it still susceptible to this "limp home" situation?
52,000 miles on it, no wonder why it still runs. It won't make it to 150k before it completely falls apart. My grandma had a 2008 PT cruiser. At 4 years old the car was falling apart at 70k miles. Air conditioner quit working, Cam sensor, engine mounts, exhaust leak at the manifold, passenger side window regulator, transmission was starting to jerk around a bit. GARBAGE!!
i have had a several of these failures...i have piggybacked an external relay to replace the failed TIPM internal relay...the PCM is just a control and the TIPM is just an output relay to load...i use a relay with a diode/resistor on the coil side of the relay and a external fuse for the load side...you might get a code for power output short to power but it does not turn the check engine light on...you could also check the amperage on the transmission side of the TIPM...one of the solenoids could be over current and damaging the internal relay of the TIPM....BUT it is a JEEP...oh i mean chrysler TIPM

Got a 2002 tcm is separate from ecm if I clean code trans performs fine short distance then check engine and back to limp mode pt cruiser would like to add relay but your layout has ecm and trans in one module any ideas

Too much RUclips, maybe!! Heck, I'm all chooched up!! On a moped, no less!!
Ahh the old Cry-sler PT Abuser limp mode problems haven't been corrected I see. Popping that cover should expose a whole sea of red and orange wires in a huge tangled mess if it is the same as the 01 Abuser that I worked on. I will be very interested to see what you determine the problem to be in the next video to see if we arrived at the same conclusion but I don't want to tell you what my findings were so that I don't bias your diagnosis because what I found eventually had absolutely nothing to do with the transmission in any way but corrected the problem and I am still not sure why. Lol. I stumbled upon my findings without a pico scope or wiring diagrams because it was back in 04 and there were no diagrams online yet. The car I was working on didn't have a warranty left because it was on its third engine already so they gave the original owner a new car and sold this one off as a parts car because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it so we rolled the dice and bought a 2 year old car with less than 20k for $500.00 and we still got screwed. Lol
@@JohnKorcak-jv6xb As crazy as it seems for some reason the car would run fine with the upstream O2 sensor unplugged and it could be driven for weeks but with the sensor was plugged back in it would blow the asd fuse and shut down again. I never actually figured out what the real cause was so good luck with yours.
Ive been working on a 2006. There is NO C4 38 pin? Wire doesnt exhist? Any other way i can just bypass the tipm with a relay? Or any other place i should look for wire corrosion??? Goes into limp mode sometimes just at startup. Never while actually driving
I have a 2006 pt gt I used c4 pin 18 and 19 . 18 is green wire coming out of ecm and red 19 coming from tpim relay works great . I had the same problem only on start up when warm would it go in limp mode.
Sir, I gave up on dodge/ Crysler. I owned a few including several Hemi engine vehicle's which i loved! but everything else was a disaster. The quality control was a nightmare. The engine was great, transmission was okay.

problem is, many now have "computers" in the tipm that are on the can bus and operate the relays that way. complete stooge engineered junk, with stooge engineered and lies about component duration and testing or they went through "accelerated testing" in a perfect controlled lab environment to curtail the bad outcome ;)
Electric shift transmissions , owned one and done .
@Jonathan points to standard trans......... uh-huh petunia :))
Just my idea, tapping the TIPM with something hard (screw driver handle) should localize the vibration and have less effect on the wiring and connectors. This should localize the testing a little further.
P⁰[0ooo[ooko
Your videos have not come up in the RUclips home page for months... This one just did.
What is it with all the beeping and chiming of those cars in America?
Ya it's silly I know the door is open and I know that i have the key turned on i don't need a stupid chime
all that and yet everyone still locks the keys in and leaves the lights on, so they made it sense and auto-shutdown, which causes issues for the rest of us..
IVAN, Awesome/brilliant diagnosis really enjoy the way u find the problem and learn alot from you thanks and cheeers brotha.
Ivan, you pulled the back cover off the connector, why didn't you back-probe instead of piercing the wires?
Is there a way to bypass the tipm like you did in this video on a 2009 Chrysler sebring? I have been searching all over for a wiring diagram and some information on this.
If you look up “fail” in a Michigan dictionary it says: “See Chrysler TIPM” Yet another good video and reason to never own a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/FCA vehicle with their incredibly failure prone poorly designed electrical systems.
Teaser bonus footage!
It’s just a Chrysler.... no way there is anything wrong with the transmission (obvious sarcasm)... also, RIP to the bunny
was that a code word thing like the rabbits dead maybe little ivan on its way???
Rest In Peace rabbit and Rust Into Pieces Crapsler :))
Here's your problem lady, it's a Chrysler.
That was lame
Can anyone, including Ivan point me to part two of this particular series......just replaced the TIPM on my g/f's 2k6 Pt Cruiser wagon and now I'm getting codes P0700 and P0882. Love this video and need to find part two so I can get this blasted car going !
If I were you I would tell that customer to get ride of it. When you said Crysler PT and Dodge Neon (which they have the same platform) just put a end to its life.
I wonder why they were so popular when they came out. If you can remember back to 2001, dealerships couldn't keep them in stock, dealerships had to order direct from the factory if somebody wanted one. I don't know for sure but I think there may still be some PT Cruiser clubs around. What changed from then to now about that car?
Excellent diagnosis!
TIPM relay problems, I had the same problems with the older Ford CCRM relay box. The CCRM had problems with the cooling fan relays and the AC compressor clutch relay. Take it apart and repair.
the words "Ford" and "Module or relay" in the same sentence is a guaranteed issue :)
These vehicles remind me of the infamous Chevy Vega. Self destruct mode is built in with little notice before it occurs.
Ivan fix. Break out the Weller and scan the board.
That's in Part 2 ;)
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I knew it, only because I've done it too many times myself.
I was expecting the input shaft speed sensor to have failed as I understand they fail often (like all Chrysler speed sensors).
Windshield is cracked? Don't worry, it's Pennsylvania
Ivan, another head-scratcher. Keep us posted. Nothing like the good old TIPM. 👍
You are right, I see some similarities with the Jeep Commander video! I bet there is a relay inside the TIPM that is gone bad. If you get the part number off the relay then you may be able to find one and solder it in. Like in the Jeep Commander video I would think an easy fix would be to wire an ignition wire to the TIPM output circuit and problem should be solved!
part 2 tipm rebuild?
if starting out do you suggest alldata or identafix .... can only have one
Great video sir.
RIP the rabbit :(
:(
NYAAAA What's up doc?
ba-dump.
Thats a great video ivan
thanks Amr!
Scotty hate that model too....gosh,..looks nice....oh common Chrysler....
31:19 Nice fuse box. when you do finally get to the TCM you will discover you cannot troubleshoot them till you remove the gell. Same as the ECU/PCM . Good Luck
What u mean
What about limp mode sometimes can pull out it shifts great but when I stop and pull back out it pulls out in 2nd gear then like it's got a mind of it's own
Pretty sure limp mode is a standard option on chrysler products
Felt like I was sitting on the ground driving it...bye neon...hello C1500 Silverado.
a slimyratblow...
You will enjoy Part 2 :)
I dont know if youve answered this but is this a 2006 if not is this the same wiring.
do you think i could do this fix before it breaks we go on vacation all the time in our convertible i always try to fix things before they break
Pt cruiser has been crusher food since they came off the line..
There are still clubs by me. The body design was cool.. the motor was just junk. I still see used ones for sale with big oil stains underneath them.
Are you using Alldata Pro?
Cold solder joint?
Got a 2002 tcm is separate from ecm if I clean code trans performs fine short distance then check engine and back to limp mode pt cruiser would like to add relay but your layout has ecm and trans in one module any ideas
You know something is wrong, when you come back, and rewatch a video, because you already watched everything else on RUclips, except Scotty, and even all the suggestion videos have all been seen!!
Too much RUclips, maybe!! Heck, I'm all chooched up!! Car repair, boat repair, catamaran building, logging, diggin, fixing drains, towing, truckin, tree topping, cake making, beating iron, drilling steel, shaping wood, and much much more!! I even watched some videos about brain surgery!! Now, there is almost no chance whatsoever that I may pilot your next commercial flight, but I can understand why I was watching those vids!! But, BRAIN SURGERY?? For Gods sake, WHY DID I WATCH THAT?? I can't get that picture out of my mind! Makes me want to do something extreme to forget it!! Like, stretch a dead cows ass over my head, break into a prison while drunk and naked, or post videos of myself and a Billy' goat doing naughty things, or even worse post videos of myself and a fat girl doing naughty things!! On a moped, no less!!
The Money Shot...............where have I heard that before. Hmmmmm
Lol
good story 500 is to much lol
What did you find my 2002 pt is in limp mode 700 codes
@@JohnKorcak-jv6xb As crazy as it seems for some reason the car would run fine with the upstream O2 sensor unplugged and it could be driven for weeks but with the sensor was plugged back in it would blow the asd fuse and shut down again. I never actually figured out what the real cause was so good luck with yours.
A good video but disappointed you did not show how to get the tipm box out.
The TIPM sounds like a ride at the amusement park, so if you need me I 'll be over there. lol
23:11 I must look up what tipm is to continue.
Sir, I gave up on dodge/ Crysler. I owned a few including several Hemi engine vehicle's which i loved! but everything else was a disaster. The quality control was a nightmare. The engine was great, transmission was okay.
Are there wire same for an 06 pt turbo
During the test drive, you put that rabbit in limp-home mode.
Where u located I need work done on my 2012 cummins low voltage to tcm
Visit my website www.pinehollowdiagnostics.com 👍
Ha Ha, the PT cruiser is actually just a Neon underneath.
I didn't know it had bright yellow or purple or orange colours... especially those shades that would react to a ultra violet light...
Cool beans..., the tipm suspense is intolerable. Also heard shift solenoids go bad on these things .
it's a chrysler with electronics.... it's easier to say what doesn't break on them, nothing :)))
From what I understand tipm will be gone once all the SGW modules are in. I’ve looked at wire diagrams and notices the ones with the SGW don’t have tipms. Anyone else notice this? Looking forward to part 2 Sunday night 😂
"secure gateway module" aka throw away all your current high dollar tools, because now the data buses will be encrypted and just be digital encrypted noise on them. and you'll have your hand tied trying to diagnose ;) burn chrysler burn, flames and fire higher and higher..
I am very sure there will be a turning point sooner than later, when some smart fellas release easy to make kill all from afar ;)
throttle bottle the Bosch ADS 625 can get into it Luckily through the obd2 they had it as a beta back in March now it’s permanent. I have only tested it on a few. It is kinda crazy I get it for hacking purposes but why block it for shops just doesn’t make sense
transmission output sounds like something to do with torque converter shift engagement.Without timp no other gears work.
it likely has 3+ speed sensors on it, they've done that since the mid to late 90's range...
Just looking at it I know what's wrong, it's a POS that should've been recycled immediately after it left the assembly line
I once was delivering parts to a chrysler plant, they were all pissed off about something.. I suggested I take the parts directly to the junk yard, and skip the middle man! (I didn't capitalize chrysler on purpose. They don't deserve it.)
I wonder why they were so popular when they came out. If you can remember back to 2001, dealerships couldn't keep them in stock, dealerships had to order direct from the factory if somebody wanted one. I don't know for sure but I think there may still be some PT Cruiser clubs around. What changed from then to now about that car?
sadly, it should have never been.....
I got a TPIM, TCM and PCM for that.. All you do id program the PCM to the VIN and mileage good to go..And yes these things have built in replay under the box. None serviceable.
You made a sail rabbit. After it dries out you can peel it off the road and toss it like a Frisbe.
