Out of curiosity I just watched part of your four year old video because i still havent upgraded from my A7r lll because it does everything i need it to do for my usual shooting. I probably wouldve gotten the A1 if it wasnt over priced. They basically upgraded an A9 with more mp and charged two grand more for it. Maybe in another year i will upgrade to an A7r V or an A1 ll.
Hi there can you help me out please I want a camera for night sky scenery photos and for birds in flight, I have looked at the Sony a7 iii and the Nikon 810 but both seems to have their faults when used over time so I’m stuck to what to buy
It's 2020 and the Sony A7R III is still relevant and in demand. The D850, allthough still great, have aged a lot. Contrast detect af, 155 af points, slapping mirror, 8fps burst, slow video af, big heavy, and dslr's are dying plus the F-mount has been replaced by the Z-mount. Interesting turn of events in my opinion.
I’d never choose mirrorless until I have no choice. It just has no character, everything is just overly simple and easy. It takes away from the reward of putting in the effort to get great images. I have a Canon 5D mkii, and have used a canon eos R6, and obviously it’s superior technically, but I miss the size, the weight, and feel of using a DSLR. The sound of the mechanical shutter…
No camera is perfect for everything. I am loving my Sony A7R3 for most situations and subjects. I upgraded from my A7R2. I am a longtime pro and switched from Canon to Sony last January. Once I got into Sony mirrorless ,I could never go back. I prefer the features of the Sony mirrorless camera over all the high-end Nikon and Canon DSLRs. I am using Sony and Sigma lenses. But the choices here are a personal preference. Nikon and Canon users will do their best to support their allegiance. Cheers and thanks Jared for your efforts !
Mike Zupancic ,no one is saying anyone should spend for two systems. Many Nikon and Canon pros are switching systems though. Sony shooters are NOT switching back to Nikon or Canon. Cheers.
On this Sony A7r III 3 an important thing is missing which is the color inversion or negative. Very useful for reproducing color or black and white negatives. Many photographers have these negatives in stock and could digitize them. I hope this message reaches Mr. Sony's ears.
I’ve used my A7Riii in rain, heavy mist, fog, ocean spray, heavy winds with sand and dust, and in a blizzard. It hasn’t had any issues at all. I mean yea, I’m not going to set it in a puddle, or just leave it sitting on the table in a rainstorm, but it will stand up to the elements. Sure it’s not Pentax or d850 level, but that’s part of the trade off with the smaller body, not as much room for weather sealing. 🤷🏼♂️
Weather sealing doesn't really take that much space. Would like to see another test though, just to get a little more objective view. I'm not on the Sony train, but glad that it works for you, everything else should be pretty much irrelevant for you....
@Ghost Grown Medicine Imaging Resource did a test on the A7RIII, Nikon D850, Canon MRK IV, and the Olympus OMD EM-1 II with spraying it with water. They all passed with flying colors, except the Sony failed miserably. ruclips.net/video/c7BG74w0gAw/видео.html
kalel33 I’ve seen it. I’ll make sure I air on on the side of caution when it comes to rain, but so far I’ve not had any issues with my A7Riii putting up with anything I’ve thrown at it.
@Saleucami That's really sad that Sony has the only 70-200mm lens that's not weather sealed against water. For that $2700 price tag it should be. My $1300 Tamron 70-200mm G2 lens is weather sealed against water.
Anyone else would have just thrown out a basic talking head review. Fro has to add some intense style and it is definitely worth the wait. The amount of planning you put into these is insane. Respec
Per your comments regarding distortion at 27:05...you took the balloon/truck shot while holding the camera in portrait orientation and pointing up towards the center of the balloon. When shooting any wide lens in portrait you will get dramatically enhanced distortion unless you are perfectly level with the subject and this effect is even greater with ultra-wides. Also, your distance to the truck contributes to the extreme distortion. In other words, isn't the distortion you are highlighting due to perspective distortion and not lens distortion from build quality or flaws, which you seem to be implying? When shooting ultra-wide you must shoot landscape orientation unless you are purposely trying to introduce extreme perspective distortion.
the banding: isn't also caused by the frequency of the LED lighting vs the shutter speed? i shoot my a6300 and a7rii bodies at speeds that are in sync with the lighting. similar to shooting subject in front of a projector. had to do the same with my panasonic g6 and gh4 bodies so it can't be just a read out issue. haven't used the a9 so can't speak for that.
Awesome review, though I wonder why Sony doesn't allow the pixel shifted image to be exported as a 32 bit radiance image so that you are not stuck with the sony software for the initial editing. While off topic, for the educational guide plug at 7:03, if the youtube compression causes color clipping in the shadows, one solution is to have a linear fading out of the saturation of the shadows, where the start and end, covers the shadows shadows experiencing the color clipping.
Personally, I think out of all the innovative "image improvement" innovations that Sony, Canon and Nikon are doing( not sure what Nikion's equivalent is), that Canon's Digital Lens Optimizer is the most useful and best for me ( compared to Sony's pixel shift). DLO can be applied to any raw image after being taken, with moving subjects etc. It doesn't have the limitation of still subjects only combined with tripod use.
You have the best quality, most knowledgeable videos exploring the features of different gear, and the critiques are always honest and clear, I commend you sir.
I am not shopping for a new camera at this time, I almost always get something extra out of your reviews...tips, tricks, inspiration and of course a laugh or two. Thanks to all at the Fro Factory for your hard work.
a7r3 vs d500 for wildlife? Cant find a d500 anywhere, found a "new/open box" on craigslist for the a7r3 with an 24-70mm f2.8 GM lens ILCE-7RM3 (battery, front cap, strap, USB cables, etc.) for $600 Originally planned on the D500 with the sigma 150-600 or the 200-500, but if i went with the sony i could pair that with the 200-600 and still be around the same cost.
Thanks for the review Jared. I got my A7Riii Friday and have taken some shots. It is a great update from the A7Rii and I couldn’t be happier. Still love my Nikon gear and stills quality with the D810 but the weight difference makes me choose Sony kit every time I travel.
Man what an epic review Jared. Nice work! I liked it so much I turned on the notifications. Please do more videos about Sony cameras. I love all the tips and tricks you show as well as the review. Keep doing videos exactly like this except maybe a bit shorter.
"when you put good glass on these cameras the get instantly heavier" For someone who likes to nitpicking this is incorrect or just partially correct. I.e. 55/1.8, 85/1.8 are by all standards excellent glass and really light and compact too. Massive zoom lenses are not the only option, as a fact I rather carry 3 small bodies with 3 fast primes over a single clunky body with one zoom lens.
Why don't they make screens reticulated like Canon? Does Canon own the rights? It's one of the main reasons I buy Canon, it helps so much with macro and self portraits.
Just out of curiosity, how many of you a7riii users bought the a7riii mainly for video/filming? I'm trying to see how many people use the a7riii mainly for video as I'm trying to create custom canon luts for the whole alpha sony line, but if not that many people use the a7riii, then I might just skip out on that one to save renting one.
How's the autofocus speed on this Sony vs the Nikon z7? I tried the z7 this past week with the adapter to a Sigma, and the af was hunting and hunting, or just missing outright. Kind of disappointed.
Great review. As alway...A major question for me is which camera to choose; Sony a7iii or the Canon eos-r. I have canon lenses and Tamron and Sigma lenses for Canon cameras. Is the Sony a bad choose in this case or does it work fine with a converter? Hope you can point me in the right direction. Or someone...:)
D850. Had Nikon glass (have been using D800) and bought D850. Sure, it would be nice with EVF, but beyond that, I don't really see any point in switching for me. Love the grip of D850 and how balanced it feels with heavy glass. Haven't tried the A7R line, though, but no mirrorless (or other DSLR) I've had my hands on have felt as good in the hand as the D850.
Jared, I grew up in Philly. Went into the service and never went back, except to visit family. Today I live in the S.F. Bay Area, CA. How can you visit the West and go back and be happy in Fishtown, Philadelphia??? I lived in Kensington as a boy in the 60's . My first love was a beautiful twin girl in Fishtown. But I sure do miss the Jersey shore. Much, much, better than the West Coast Beaches. The Water in Northern CA is ice cold year round and just doesn't have the scent of the Jersey Coast. The fishing's not nearly as good either.
Hello Jared, can you please make a video on auto-focus capabilities in high intensity situations like sports (continuous, af-s, shallow-DoF, low light, video, sport)? I am really considering upgrading to A7RIII - but without significantly better autofocus the rest of the new features don't justify it for me.
I understand that the a7R III is full frame but should that be all the reason why it should hsve two UHS 2 card slots? I bought the Fujifilm XT2 and although it is a APS-C camera, it has two UHS 2 card slots. It also has a decent menu layout. Why not talk about Fujifilm XT2 or, the medium format mirrorless camera?
Jared Polin fair enough thanks brother; any recommendations for a landscape lens for my D850? Heading up north in a month but don’t have tons to drop on a 14-24 mm...any other recs?
Enjoyed your review Jared! I’ve been shooting an a7rii for a year and could never go back a DSLR. I smirked at your comment about your shot w/o looking into the view finder, b/c that’s how I shoot 90% of the time except for in bright sunlight when the back lcd gets washed out. Keeping your eyes on the subject field is great aid for composition, especially candid portraits. You already see the next shot before you take the one currently framed one. It’s a head up display. Plus a lot less straining.
Jared, I noticed you used different lenses when you were shooting the same landscape. Looks like the 24-70 and 70-200? Just curious to see why you switch it up?
I'm a beginner and wanted to ask which camera is best for weddings, I'm looking for something that's easy to operate and good quality pictures Sony a7R III Sony a7 III Nikon D850
hello Jared, I know the selection of lenses in the sony lineup is not the best, but besides that; can you recommend them as a lens that is as good as a Canon lens?
Hey Jared Polin, what would you say about getting the Sony a7riii camera but using Nikon lenses for a while until being able to afford the sony lenses?
This was an excellent review. You are correct that AF on mirrorless is not as good as a dSLR, but it's now so close that it is no longer a deal breaker. And you're correct that a mirrorless camera plus good glass is just as heavy and bulky. The more good cameras that come out just benefit us all.
Thanks for the in-depth discussion and review. I’m shooting an a9 now, but am planning a safari and thinking about resolution. We print 30x50” and it seems like resolution would have produced noticeably different results. If you had to choose, would you take an a9 or an a7riii on safari?
i just got my R3 and i love it, as a sony shooter i do feel as if this is the first mirrorless camera that truly matches and in some cases (5d4) beats DSLRs.
I almost clicked off when i saw 41 minutes, but I am so happy I didn't. Hands down the best a7riii review so far, I also love the little handy tips you throw in there. Definitely clicking that subscribe button.
Dear Godfrey, you are absolutely right, photography is a hobby for me. Like everything else in life, I am constantly learning and improving my skills, thats why a lot of us come to youtube, udemy ect. to learn something new. I do think Jared is cool, thats why I watched the whole 41 minute video. Take care.
Banding. All shots in which it occurred on the A9 were at 1/4000. The two examples you showed here were at 1/320. Did you try doing the same shot with different shutter speed to see if it had an effect?
Honestly I shot the shots exactly how I would have shot them with anything. I don't go out looking for the issues, I try and shoot how I normally shoot and bam.
Jared Polin Yep, of course, I do too. What I was curious about was if you took the same shot but with a different shutter speed would the banding disappear? Of course, this would depend on you being able to pick the banding up on the LCD at the time you took the shot so you could change the shutter speed to see if that fixed it. I wondered if the banding would still be there if, say, you shot 1/250 instead of 1/320 and compared.
At least we'd know what the cause was then, if it did fix it. it might mean that in certain light you'd have to take 2 shots with different speeds but that's perhaps better than finding your great shot is trashed because of the bands.
I've shot on Sony in the past and the images out of the camera were very "flat" as opposed to my Canon 5D mk III. Obviously I'm going to punch them up in Lightroom, but just wondering if that was your experience with this camera?
The Sony A7Riii is an amazing camera, so is the Nikon D810. Most new cameras now are pretty much jack of all trades and the cost does reflect this ! The eye AF is a feature should be introduced in to all new cameras from top 3 ( of course sony do as it is there bad ) manufacturers. As this should makes life easier if using F1. 4 or F1. 2 lens.
I'd probably go with the Sony. I'd go with the Nikon if I only wanted to do still, but for video as well it definitely looks like the Sony is the way to go.
When you took pictures at night of the stars, what lens or lenses did you use?

i never used my Sonys without a grip ... for me that is essential ... the older cameras benefit from the longer battery life and the better handling and it simply feels better
Sony a7R iii vs Nikon D850? Which do you go with?
Nikon d850
Nikon d850

Ah cool! I should be converting to Sony a7riii what’s it like with the converters, I’ve got the sigma art 35mm for canon. What’s your adapter?
Tom Lally, The Sigma MC-11 (Canon mount to Sony E Mount) adapter works great on Sony mirrorless cameras.
Mike Zupancic ,no one is saying anyone should spend for two systems. Many Nikon and Canon pros are switching systems though. Sony shooters are NOT switching back to Nikon or Canon. Cheers.
Awesome! Thank you for that. I'll just have to see. Exciting time.
Gerald Williams That’s not true, some are leaving Sony , to other brands & yes even Canon

Hello, I want to sell the sony a99 ii to buy a sony a7R III, to take sports photos ..... what do you think? Thank you
I went with the D850. The imaging resource weather sealing video played a part. The lack of lenses compared to the Nikon also was a deciding factor.
yup.
I'm from the future. Nikon DSLR cameras are all dead now. Mirrorless if the future and the a7Riii still holds up very well to this day.
Great video guys! I was 99% convinced, now I'm 100% convinced. I'm ordering the a7riii

What happens when you bump up so the Sutter speed that you reach e.g 30s or so to the evf ? Will it be blury?
How's the autofocus speed on this Sony vs the Nikon z7? I tried the z7 this past week with the adapter to a Sigma, and the af was hunting and hunting, or just missing outright. Kind of disappointed.
Also the sony can shoot s-log video.. Which is huge for color grading in post
What caused that distortion on the van? Is there anyway to avoid situations like that with the Sony camera?

Any comments about this Sony with Nikon glass ? I really need the 600mm and 400mm lenths.
so Jared Polin gets the option for shooting a professional event, for still photos, does he pick up the d850 or a7riii?
D5!!!!! Or a9. Depends on gig of course. Most likely d850 with the glass I want.
Jared Polin fair enough thanks brother; any recommendations for a landscape lens for my D850? Heading up north in a month but don’t have tons to drop on a 14-24 mm...any other recs?
In camera stabilisation! Would you have any issues if you use a lens with image stabilisation as well. (turn on)
nope, it would be even better. It knows which one to use.

hello Jared, I know the selection of lenses in the sony lineup is not the best, but besides that; can you recommend them as a lens that is as good as a Canon lens?
Which camera have better video autofocus sony a7r iii or canon 5d mark iv? Please help me with this one.
Thnq
Hey Jared Polin, what would you say about getting the Sony a7riii camera but using Nikon lenses for a while until being able to afford the sony lenses?
On my a7r iii ISO goes to 50. Is it ok? i live In Dubai is it because of region or what please explain.
Great review! What's this storage device we see at the end of the video?
HI Jared, Just watched this video and was wondering what is that on top of our Sony body in the hotshoe and what is it used for? if not a flash?
“GET OUT OF THE SHOT WEIRD FEMALE MODEL let’s take pictures of this beautiful boy”
he was hot....... right?
Hi Jared, what’s your thoughts for this camera to do night long exposure? Big sensor makes lots of noise?
This was an excellent review. You are correct that AF on mirrorless is not as good as a dSLR, but it's now so close that it is no longer a deal breaker. And you're correct that a mirrorless camera plus good glass is just as heavy and bulky. The more good cameras that come out just benefit us all.
yup yup
Its a bit lighter though
How much are they ...and what's good for video ,or wedding shoot
Thanks for the in-depth discussion and review. I’m shooting an a9 now, but am planning a safari and thinking about resolution. We print 30x50” and it seems like resolution would have produced noticeably different results. If you had to choose, would you take an a9 or an a7riii on safari?
Hi Jared, is it normal that my A7riii EVF isn't as clear as the LCD?
i just got my R3 and i love it, as a sony shooter i do feel as if this is the first mirrorless camera that truly matches and in some cases (5d4) beats DSLRs.
Absolutely love these photos, Jared
I've shot on Sony in the past and the images out of the camera were very "flat" as opposed to my Canon 5D mk III. Obviously I'm going to punch them up in Lightroom, but just wondering if that was your experience with this camera?
My experience is all raw files are flat unless they have amazing lighting.
Hi Jared! Did you use Eye-AF during the burst while photographing the running horse?
no I did not.
is the a7riii a Bayer pattern sensor? if so, does it Debayer in camera?
My D850😍. Love the weather sealing and durability. Long term this D850 will outlast the others. More lenses choice with Nikon.
glhernan1 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Sony A7Riii is an amazing camera, so is the Nikon D810. Most new cameras now are pretty much jack of all trades and the cost does reflect this !
The eye AF is a feature should be introduced in to all new cameras from top 3 ( of course sony do as it is there bad ) manufacturers. As this should makes life easier if using F1. 4 or F1. 2 lens.
Godfrey Jemand
What happened to it, what happened to the technology ! ?
great review! but could you make a review where you will use the r3 or the r2, generally a full frame sony camera and adapted lenses only?
anyone know this camera can take photos(stills) whilst recording video?
I love your reviews man and how in depth you get with it. I can’t wait for the a7III review.
Hello sir i wanna ask a question...
Does flange size really matters in cameras?
I am Nikon shooter and want continuous video, but I am thinking I will go with a Sony a6000 for shooting video.
Mate, production value has taken a big step up, loving your work.
I'd probably go with the Sony. I'd go with the Nikon if I only wanted to do still, but for video as well it definitely looks like the Sony is the way to go.
Huge work! Great Video and Great work Jared!
The video we’ve all been waiting for!
Really nice review Jared, as always!
How can I improve the dynamic range of my canon T7i? please tell me.It pretty much sucks
When you took pictures at night of the stars, what lens or lenses did you use?
i never used my Sonys without a grip ... for me that is essential ... the older cameras benefit from the longer battery life and the better handling and it simply feels better
