How to Strengthen Your Falsetto Singing Voice |

- Falsetto. Many people just call it head voice…but there’s much more to the distinct register known as Falsetto. What is Falsetto, and how can we use it more efficiently in our singing?
For some singers, the term Falsetto can be a confusing one. I think mostly because when we talk about falsetto, we’re talking about the more extensive subject of voice registration, which is a massive conversation and quite a controversial topic to boot.

I was a band singer in high school and probably due to lack of practice I lost my falsetto register in my 30s. Trying to get its back so I am very grateful for this exercise.
Good to know that
Barry Gibb is my favorite falsetto singer. His voice in "Tragedy", "Too much heaven", "You should be dancing", "Staying alive" and "Fanny" is just awesome!
When I sing low falsetto my voice automatically switches to chest voice and cracks and i hate it
Grant James
Same and i hate it aghhhh
Falsetto is not meant for lower pitch... Just as chest voice is not advisable for high belts..
Ayaan well when I sing in a my regular head voice it shifts as well
same :((
When you get to those low notes its natural to switch to your chest voice. Your falsetto voice is meant to sing high notes, and when you sing low enough you automatically try switch to head voice. If you practice you can remove those cracks and switch between head voice and chest voice without a problem. A good example of this are yodeling singer's. They can switch between chest and head voice very quick and is very impressive
You are the only vocal coach whose techniques allowed me to actually produce sounds from my falsettos in just a few minutes!
Before this only air would come out when I tried to sing falsetto!!
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome papillon. Thanks for watching.
I know right!😄❣🔥
6:16, thank you for being the first person I've ever seen in my life who this has happened to besides myself. Maybe now I can finally see how to solve that occasional problem.
Apparently I need to work on a simultaneous onset? I guess…
Man, I have a strong falsetto and this will help me to improve more. Thanks Dr. Dan
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Anonymous 57. Thanks for watching.
I always break into falsetto cause my head voice is a struggle. Boohoo I gotta work on that.
Ash, perhaps this video about 'head voice' will prove helpful - ruclips.net/video/Flxa2YIfTAo/видео.html
I feel like I always sing in chest voice and low🤦 there's just so much to singing I just want to sing. I don't know all the technical stuff!!!🤦🤷
incredible - i need to show this to my students!! thanks so much Dr. Dan
I'm glad you enjoyed the video David Zas. Thanks for watching.
I love this exercise. Thanks!
This is very interesting... i think the variability of voice its what give us power even in every register singularly. Thats why i practice every single day head voice, chest, and mix. After your great lessons im starting thinking that im not practicing a real falsetto, i practice a lot of head voice but with more thyroaritenoid. Lets go into this new challange! :)
I will say it again...You are an awesome teacher, man! You are an awesome teacher, man! Thanks!
Absolutely Awesome Video Dr Dan Brian Wilson
Definitely Morten Harket (A-ha)...I am close to having my falsetto in the same range and strength...but I am just not there yet. Need some exercises I can do to strengthen and improve. There will definitely come in handy. Thank you!
Glad that I found you Dr. Dan
you're awesome Dr Dan
I was able to sing another four of them slides above your high E- (five more at a push!)
A GREAT VLOG DrDAN, THANK YOU.
You're welcome Vijay S. Thanks for watching.
Dr dan you are just amazing

amazing, this exercise is really helpful for me ! thanks 😃
Happy to hear that!
Thanks 🙏🏾 for sharing Dan
You're welcome charlita25. Thanks for watching.
Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire is my favorite falsetto singer. And I can hurt myself trying to hit his notes! 😅
Usher & Mario’s use of falsettos are superb!
They sure do!
extremely helpful exercise, thank you!!
You're welcome Pranav Pannala. Thanks for watching.
it is very easy to practice if someone instruct us what to say or read exactly
Dr. Dan I’m your biggest fan from the uk tnt♥️💯🎶🎉
Wow, thanks for that, I'll will practice it now! 👍🏻😊 Well, I have definitely a problem when it comes to high notes, can't sing them...
I'm not completely sure where my falsetto starts kicking in, but I imagine it starts hitting around E5 or F5. Because if I start singing up there for a few minutes, my voice will start cracking up there if I sing more. There have been a couple instances where I have been able to sing up A5. I use to be able to sing up to G5 before my voice would start cracking. I think it's because I'm kind of more working on my lower range than my higher range.
Thank you. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Thom Yorke's falsetto technique, because he's incredibly good at it. Also, Jónsi of Sigur Rós....otherwordly.
Prince, Howard Hewett, and Phillip Bailey from Earth Wind in Fire. Listen to keep your head in the sky, it will blow you away!
Pliz do a video for conversion from chest to falsetto smoothly
Brian Friggin Wilson, Falsetto straight from heaven.
Rob Halford's falsetto is my favorite
Thanks Garth
Party on, Wayne!
Love this exercise!!! I got elbowed in my throat playing basketball and since then my falsetto is gone. But doing your exercises daily (past 2 weeks) I'm slowly getting my falsetto voice back!! Thank you sir!!!! I can sing some Sam Smith songs now!!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video @truthrevolution101. Thanks for watching.
great information. Thanks/
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Watching this video made me feel quite stupid. I always knew about this vocal excercise and have done it many times, but I never got the idea to do any vocal excercises in the falsetto register, since it was never taught to me! I instantly felt much more confident in singing with my falsetto and got suprisingly high, to an F sharp!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Tony. Thanks for watching.
Good vid. When I was young I could crank Falsetto notes up to C6 (with effort, for sure). But If you don't use it you lose it. Can't crank higher than F5 anymore (since my 30s! In my 60s now). And THAT almost rips my throat out! I'm talking reinforced Falsetto here. Unreinforced falsetto isn't much good over C5 at all. Singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in the key the Tokens do it is taxing as hell for me. My current favorite Pop Falsettist is the countertenor for the Korean Quartet "Forestella." Pop-wise, Dimash is really great, too. Russell Thompson Jr of the Stylistics is worth a listen, as an old-schooler.
When you access your falsetto in the puppy-dog exercise, you do so at F-sharp, then pitch circle easily down to C & up to G-sharp. You are in falsetto all the time & that's the natural zone where men can
1st access their falsetto. But then you start the "Shee" exercise deep - at A - and sing in head voice. Your head voice starts to struggle where everyone's does - around D natural - & at E you'd topped out. But none of that was in falsetto, because it was too deep for you to access falsetto. You can't easily sing a G-sharp 5, then struggle three minutes later finding a D too high, if you're singing in the same registration.
Surely the way to do the Shee exercise must be to start it where you most easily access falsetto - in your case about F-sharp - and work your way *down* until you struggle to stay in falsetto any more, without flicking into head?
Frankie Valli......I used to be able to sing ANYTHING he could sing, I began to lose a lot of the falsetto somewhere in my late 30s early 40s. I'm 69 now and I have not lost any of my high tenor and any of the falsetto I have left is stil strong but l can't do 4 Seasons songs anymore. LOL I miss it. I blew a lot of minds with it.
Ian Moore, Prince and Sam Ryder are my favorite male falsetto voices.
I remember being a 5 year old when I started discovering the flute register, I was playing in the street and my parents and close neighbours were all staring from their windows and searching for the ambulance which was my flute register 😂😂😂
i'm crying right now because i literally can not produce any sort of voice in a higher register 😭
nice exercises!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video NomadApe. Thanks for watching.
I can feel the top of throat slightly drying out when I try and do this. What exactly am I doing wrong?
My falsetto used to be strong by I went to a protest and yelled to much and completely messed it up so I'm tryna make it stronger again
My highest falsetto is a Bb6 but sometimes it comes out really good but sometimes it doesn’t come out at all
Thanks for best info new suporter here from Philippines
Thanks for the sub!
Hey Doc how are you? Thanks for this great video sharing your expertise! Since yesterday I can't sing in falsetto I can barely produce some sound when trying. My chest voice is fine except I feel like wanting to cough all the time because something is annoying me. I don't know what I can do and if it's something serious can you give me advices?

Hey.can you teach the high note of Zayn in steal my girl!thanks
my falsetto sounds like i’ve been hit on the balls and it kinda sounds nasally

Matt Corby is the best falsetto user I think! :) thank you for the video!
No problem!
Awesome view like always! Can you show us how to harmonize with other singers?

Awesome! Thank you so much! Keep up the good work!
I'm trying to reach the falsetto at the end of "Fun, Fun, Fun" by The Beach Boys. Sometimes I'm randomly able to but I'm working on singing that one note on command! (Thanks for the advice!)
you awoke my curiosity, because the Beachboys are one of my favourite bands..I can reach the f5 with falsetto, and stretch to f sharp, but the sound is loud...That is my problem..I want to just open my mouth and do it,like I do on a D5 :(
@@hedleytom Oddly enough, having a louder falsetto is not bad! For my use, I performed Led Zeppelin's First Album with my band last Friday, and I found with Robert Plant's fashion of singing, that having a softer falsetto would be limiting. For Zeppelin specifically, you have to have a louder voice throughout.
I used to be able to sing falsetto but after my voice break i cant sing it anymore
Sir how to increase the volume of your falsetto?
In Metal King Diamond!!!
thanks for sharing. my falsetto sounds airy. I should probably start at a lower note maybe c.
How can I improve my falsetto tone?
Hey Dr Dan, thank you for this terrific video; right in time for thinking about our band working on Scissor Sisters' "I don't feel like dancing"...there is falsetto in 95% of that song! What do you think of the difference, if there is one , "tonally" between a male singing that in falsetto, and a female singing that in her upper register, with TA dominance (which incidentally has been done in various covers). To my ears something is lost, or missing, in the nature of the sound if not done in male falsetto. It might just be personal preference??
P.S. Absolutely love the exercises, and your demonstration of them!
Cheers,
Lin.
I think you're right. There is a certain amount of personal preference; driven by a persons first (standing) impressions of what the song should sound like. But you can only work with what you've got, hey!
Thanks Dan.
That is so true! ( I shan't say sad but true, as it's not sad) and *yet* I spontaneously thought of Freddy Mercury singing, I want it all, I want it all, I want it all, and I want it now! 😉
The Scissor Sisters always remind me of The Beegees on that song.
I've been singing for years yadi yada but when I try to go into falsetto I sound like a train whistle
Hi Dr. Dan! Have You Tried doing a Video for singing Second Voice for Blending in with Fellow Singers? I really wanna Learn to do it but I am not Sure if I am doing it Right.

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials Wow Thank you Dr.Dan
@@DrDanRobinson Dr. Dan: I got stomped into a coma by bikers, and lost my hearing. I cope with that by placing a monitor on a stand
and hugging it to my chest. But my teeth are all canted inward, so I can not close my jaw without pulling my tongue out of the way. If I shut my jaw with my tongue relaxed, it is caught between my teeth, and hangs out over the edge, like an oversized burger on a bun.
When I started private lessons, my strong high note was F#4, six years later I am stuck at A#3.
Do you have a guess as to whether my mangled mouth is just a lost cause?
difficult thing is on switching. (e.g. shed my skin) i would simply choke myself up😥
Head voice is different from falsetto, right? What's the highest note you can sing then? G5, I'm guessing?
It depends which register I choose to be in. But yes, I can access notes in the vicinity of G5.
Thanks for the video Dr Dan, I loved it!
I think Prince, Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake, to mention a few, are some of my favorite artists who use(d) falsetto in a nice and musical way..
Nice group of artists, Maxi!
Thanks! :)
Frankie Valli, Phil Bailey- (Earth, Wind and Fire), Leo Sayer and Barry Gibb, to name a few more.
For females falsetto switches to f6 if you try to hit c6. F6 is whistle register. And it's hard to do c6 like Ariana Grande. She has a good control of it.
I need this my falsetto gone when i sing my natural voice ?
Zayn in I Don't Wanna Live Forever and Vitas's opera

Prince’s falsetto was insane. No cap.
I had Prince like falsetto but now it's super limited and the higher I go it sounds like a rattle. 😥
I've found that a good way for a bloke to learn how to sing in Falsetto is to practice singing along with female singers in their register, within the song's original key. I've always found lower-ranged females and higher-ranged females much harder to sing along with though, so I've always tended to run with mid-ranged female singers when practicing my Falsetto singing. I guess that'd make my Falsetto register pretty much equivalent to a Mezzo-soprano, right?
It all depends on where the melody and tessitura sit when singing with the female voice.
Hmmmm.... interesting. I can sing 'Show Me Heaven' by Maria McKee fairly comfortably, if that means anything- (original key and in her register.)
My voice tends to break apart quite frequently on the lower Falsetto notes though or coming from high to low in my Falsetto register. So the short and narrow of that is, the higher I sing in Falsetto- (within reason, of course), the less likely I am to crack. Lower Falsetto, on the other hand: danger-zone! o.o
My old singing teacher once gave me some advice regarding high notes, which, for the record, I've never forgot, and which I'd like to share with you and your viewers, if I may, 'cos I believe it may be beneficial. What he told me was this: "Don't try and 'hit' or 'reach' high notes. Instead, let your voice glide up to them like a kite in the wind, close your eyes while you're singing and try and picture that kite gliding higher and higher in the breeze with pretty much no trouble whatsoever. That kite is how light ya want your voice to be when singing the highest of notes. That kite's your voice." I've never forgotten that piece of advice in all these years.
And he called that the "Kite in the wind" or "Kite in the breeze" technique.
Dr dan
I didn't found how to increase high range and increasing range??in your channel

Are you ever going to sing a famous ausie song for us?...BTW I know that you are brining out a second set of exercises soon...does it make sense buying the first knowing that the second is right around the corner? As in...are their exercises totally different?
Noche, the second exercise CD will be jam-packed full of a whole new set of exercises. It should be ready for release sometime in July (fingers crossed!).
Nice! But what I am asking is if it makes sense buying both...as in...will the second one have everything that the first has?
If you want all the exercises, you will need to own both CDs.
Bono, in my opinion has a wonderful falsetto.
If I try to hit really high notes in falsetto my throat my voice becomes squeezed and I end up way off pitch particularly when I try to push through a note. I have the problem of having a deep voice. I have been told before that I will never have the voice to sing those notes and that I should stick to a lower register.
Don't be alarmed but I thought you were already in your head voice when I clicked this link. Really.... Its a bane of my existence to be told all your going to be able to sing is examples such as Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley song.
I digress my voice is really squeezed especially if I try to hit a note such as a D5 and sometimes my voice just cracks or is inconsistent. I'm finding it really difficult with my speaking register to relax into high notes.

Is there any limits to how long a singer should use falsetto without damaging his/her voice. I do like to use mine a lot of times for some songs like Ylvis - The Fox, and after some time I feel that I reached my limits and further using of falsetto can lead to damaging my voice. Am I doing something wrong or is it normal?
It is important to balance your vocal use across each register of the voice. I don't know, however, if the voice fatigues quicker if you predominantly use only one register. I'm guessing it would.
When I was in my 20s to 40s, falsetto was my specialty when I joined a barbershop group. but then stopped using for few years when I joined another group with almost no falsetto needed. Now in my early 50s I now struggle. Is it possible to regain it back?
While it is likely there will be a difference in your voice due to age, I would expect that you can rediscover your falsetto register.
I'm lucky if I can get to a C 5 at all in regular breathy falsetto. I used to get to an E5 or F5 effortlessly if warmed up. And my falsetto is a lot less reliable as there is a good chance of it cracking compared to regular non-falsetto voice.
I was really surprised that I made it to the high E slide. I am a tenor but my chest voice is nowhere near as high as yours. Is range in the chest voice have any relationship to range in falsetto?

5:12 When you make a cool play SHEEE EEE EE E SH.
Why is it that some singers, as they age, seem to lose their falsetto- or lose confidence in using it?
Is it to do with the vocal folds aging/losing strength?
Although the head voice may get lower with age, does this mean the falsetto does too?
Yes, when it comes to the ageing voice it really is a matter of use it or lose it.
@@DrDanRobinson I've found even when I use my falsetto (the regular breathy falsetto the Mick Jagger uses when singing Emotional Rescue) I'm lucky to get above a B4 when I used to get to an E5 or F5 when I was younger. Even if I test it regularly to see how high I can go with it, I never see any improvement toward getting it back above a B4 or C 5 on a good day, and it's not all that reliable enough to be usable anymore.
I have the same problem. What I don't understand is how singers like Paul McCartney (at almost 80 years old) still have their falsetto even though his regular voice sounds like that of an old man. Doesn't seem to be any way to get my falsetto back to the range it was when I was younger, even if I do use it.
If someone oversang and now falsetto sometimes breaks/ air sound only come out “hiss” how long does that usually take to recover?
It will be different for everyone. But if your voice has not returned to normal after two weeks, I recommend seeing a laryngologist for a full vocal assessment.
My falsettos sound feminine and unpleasant to listen to. I have practiced falsetto for a long time and can do it quite effortlessly. How can I produce better sounding falsettos?
It's easier to do this activities. However, I'm struggling to implement them to real singing. How do you, do that ?

Mam please help .I lost my falsetto. ..I am 17. .
I can sing only with my head voice..
Chris Isaak hits a G5( i think), as the last note in the song " Lie to me". He hits it so clean with brilliance and holds it for about 10 seconds. How is that possible as a bariton? I as a bariton myself can reach the note ( on a good day), but i cant get it that clean or hold it that amount of time. Can these exercises get me there in combination with breathing exercises? I know he might have one of the best falsettos in the business, but can these exercises help to atleast getting close to that tone? ( clean it up so to speak)
Yes. These activities will help you to gain a stronger falsetto sound for your voice.
Sir, from head voice can we hit high notes of falsetto? Sir , I mean without using falsetto can we hit high note from head voice ? Sir, because I can go high till C5 from head voice and from falsetto till A5 without training that landed me to vocal injury. Would I able to hit D5 or E5 from head voice if I train my voice properly? Sir, why falsetto goes too high hitting all high notes like G5 and A5 than head voice hitting only C5 note ? I am 17.6 year male .
