This is taking initiates from crawling to running. there are intermediate steps to train the voice to do this exercise. such as a running scale up and down into the high register on "Muh" or "Nay." I can tell this teacher is highly experienced and knowledgeable so I'm not sure why jumping so far ahead into skill level.
I have had great results implementing cry into my phonation. I very purposely and intentionally cry or sob. It seems to act like a vocal fold edge glue as l head up.
It's also helpful to keep the sound in your mask, it's like I'm focusing sound out of my nose. I am a Contralto l sing chest tones up to F4 similar to men. I am trying to delay it up to G4, which is the Holy Grail for me. Mouth position, jaw positioning and breath is also very important. If l am not conscious what I'm doing chest register notes won't come out at all, or they are terrible quality, trapped in the jaw phenomenon. I still struggle with my low register. Learning to sing as an adult is hard, I struggled so much up to now, and just because I'm a true alto doesn't make low notes any easier!. look at Toni Braxton the way she sings. The apparent discomfort she has in order to produce her beautiful warm and deep contralto. I am unfortunately the same way. I don't necessarily feel "sexy" in the act of singing. Anyway even for high notes it sometimes helps with a nasal placement too. Or use your soft palate (Canadian female singers do this a lot). Alanis, Avril, Jann, Sarah, etc. Also use the "ng sound".
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials The sobbing yes. Maybe it gives you the right amount of pressure. I have been guilty in the past of using too much tension/pressure and it was truly deleterious
I'm with you on that one lol. I can reach D5 at a stretch 😂 My big frustration is that I can hit these notes but don't have the strength to sing them in any other way but softly. I'm a performer on stage and it frustrates me when I'm going for the high notes like that but lack of strength can really make it sound weak.
Great video Dan! It's interesting to note how the color and acoustical properties differ with contmporary and musical theatre singing and classical vocal production. I know that you'll know what I mean when I say that, as a lyrico-spinto tenor, I was taught to cover and "turn the voice over" starting at the passagio (F, F-sharp, G - sometimes even E when I was singing a more dramatic or verismo role or aria). This sort of difference in technique or approach is what makes a classical voice (albeit a good or great one) sound odd or stilted when singing a popular or contemporary piece (i.e.: Pavarotti singing Tom Jones' song "Delilah"). And, of course, the converse is true (i.e.: Aretha Franklin singing "Nessun Dorma." - An aria, by the way, that has been both over-sung and butchered by many a contemporary vocalist.) Sorry if I seem too much a purist. I guess I'm a student of the old school and thus have a hard time shaking the idea of a vocal fach. Thanks so much for your videos, imbued with you wisdom and passion for the voice. Cheers! - Tony
The pressure goes to the jaw when I attempt the D5. When I sing I tend to use my throat a lot. I've heard that Asians aren't supposed to use the chest while singing, but I'm not sure.

my falsetto automatically kicks in whenever i sing the high notes. my music teacher always say that i have to let all my voice out while singing it but turns out to be a voice crack. im really terrified in singing high notes 'cause i know that my voice will totally crack
Falsetto vs head voice because they are different modes of head tone . Falsetto doesnt have a natural vibrato and head voice has natural head vibrato reasonace
Hi Dr. Dan, a lot of singing students say that chest voice is the thick sound, and head voice is thin and piercing. But this video suggests that chest voice is the bright, stabbing core of the voice, and head voice is the floaty, hollow quality. Can you explain why chest voice is the former?
I can usually belt an Eb5 and sustain it for a few seconds, but I can also sing an A1 in chest voice. I think I'm a high bass, a bass-baritone or a low baritone.
It sounds like you have an impressive range! Being able to belt an Eb5 and also sing down to an A1 is quite a feat. Your vocal range does suggest that you might be a high bass, bass-baritone, or low baritone. The best way to determine your specific voice type would be to work with a vocal coach or a voice professional who can assess your voice more thoroughly. They can take into account not only your range but also the quality and timbre of your voice, your tessitura (where your voice is most comfortable), and other factors. In the meantime, it’s fantastic that you have such versatility in your singing. Keep exploring and enjoying your voice! If you have any more questions or need further guidance, feel free to ask.
@@DrDanRobinson Thanks for answering, Dan. I think my tessitura is C#2-Bb4. I've been working on my voice with two different singing teachers and neither of them have been able to exactly determine my voice classification. The first teacher I had said that I'm probably a low baritone and the second teacher said "your voice type can best be determined by yourself", so I'm not sure what my voice classification is.
It's not uncommon for different teachers to have slightly different takes, but understanding your tessitura can be quite helpful. While you can't simply 'decide' your voice type, you can continue to develop your voice within its natural capabilities. Keep working on your technique and exploring your range, and over time, your voice type will become clearer.
Hey Dr. Dan, when you sing those high notes, were you activating that pharyngeal resonator so that you can take that chest voice high without pushing? Personally I can do this exercise until Ab4 comfortably before I need to use a heady sound from A4 onwards if I am not belting it out. Is it normal for a baritone like me to be around this region although I am still working to take it higher?
Really cool video, Dr Dan.. thanks for sharing! One question..as I see many singers interested in taking their chest voice higher.. I wonder why would one need to do so when they can work instead on developing a strong mixed voice.. Is it because that belty/chesty sound is a more contemporary thing or it's just a matter of style/personal preference?
Maybe they don't know how to do mixed voice or they don't like it. But i agree with you ,why someone has to suffer pulling chest above and sound like a shout when mixed voice exists?🤣also there Is something called mixed-belt which Is a stronger mix that sounds like a chest belt but without efforts eh .
Dr. Dan - Is it normal/correct for the second exercise "Nevah Nevah..." to get nasally? With a pinched nose, I still have sound but I can tell there is definitely some nasal action going on.
I used to be able to sing high notes in chest like A5 Bb5 G5 G#5 F#5 And E5/F5 but i never got training , i can only go up to F#5 now and it is very growly and raspy and chesty , is that bad? I crack on my head voice all the time , i can barely hit G5 in HV without cracking , my voice is now squeezed and thin on high notes , and even when i shout , i dont have a mix and my whistle register is gone because i overused it
I have a very raspy powerful chest which is what I prefer to sing in but I’m having trouble belting my chest I’m a tenor so my chest I start straining around a4 highest note I’ve ever belted in my chest was Eb5
See the thing is my voice is brighter when I do these exercises in comparison to you Mr.Dan and my tessitura is quite high as well but it’s a lot harder for me to not yell as I go exercise because uncomfortable above F4 and I could take it to an Ab4 do you recommended anything to take that higher?
It's important to remember that everyone has their own unique range and abilities when it comes to singing. Going up to an E4 is actually quite impressive, and it's something to be proud of! Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and improvement. With practice and dedication, you may even be able to expand your range further in the future. Keep working on your craft and don't let negative self-talk bring you down.

I loved your exercises! Thank you!
Glad you like them!
I dont why since I'm able to mix my voice i cannot hit or forgot to hit high chest notes i mostly head mix or just like axl rose style
when I sing from g3 my voice changes to mixed
i have a deep voice as a male but i remember singing a C5 in chest voice and i dont remember how i did it but now i cant hit that note again.
Same i hit a F5 many times but now i can only do D5
I think it's good y'all
This was good. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
D5 was mixed. You can see that it was easier for him to hit D5 than C5. D5 had nice vibrato and was less starined
Yes, that sounds about right, Timlui92!
Thanks! I’m tryna sing “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” because I just ordered a wah pedal.
Which is what singing is all about..
thanks! :)
Brilliant!👍👍
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Linda Dalton. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much!
Thanks Dr. Dan!
You're welcome mickey thompson. Thanks for watching.
When does the video begin please?
Even though the ee sounds nasal the air flow should only come out the mouth not the nose right? This sound always confuses me. Thanks great videos:)
The predominant flow air will be through the mouth...with the smallest amount possibly travelling through the nose.
@@DrDanRobinson I just hold my nose, I'm able to focus the sound in a better way...somehow.
Your a good trainor
Dr. Dan - Is it normal/correct for the second exercise "Nevah Nevah..." to get nasally? With a pinched nose, I still have sound but I can tell there is definitely some nasal action going on.

power metal and classic metal vocalists casually hitting screams with their chest voice in the 5/6th octave

This video how to sing high:
Ears: Don't you dare.
Heart: Don't listen to him just keep being you.
Falsetto: You want me to switch or??...
You are awesome
See the thing is my voice is brighter when I do these exercises in comparison to you Mr.Dan and my tessitura is quite high as well but it’s a lot harder for me to not yell as I go exercise because uncomfortable above F4 and I could take it to an Ab4 do you recommended anything to take that higher?
Only take the exercises to the edge of where it feels comfortable, plus one or two steps.
I can do a E5 in chest voice, but is too hard, so I practice on my G#4-B4
I feel like a loser because I can only go to E4 comfortably
It's important to remember that everyone has their own unique range and abilities when it comes to singing. Going up to an E4 is actually quite impressive, and it's something to be proud of! Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on your own progress and improvement. With practice and dedication, you may even be able to expand your range further in the future. Keep working on your craft and don't let negative self-talk bring you down.
How do you really tell if you switched to your upper register and what if your singing in your upper register the whole time but you just can’t tell
Can I use my mixed voice to belt?

I'm a songwriter /singer... In that order. I can sing but it doesn't come easy for me. However, watching your videos has helped. I need to sing to record my own songs, so that I can perform at open mics in Nashville (which is 45 mins from where I live). I really want to get a publishing deal. I'm on a tight budget. Do you recommend personal voice lessons or can I just keep learning on RUclips?
At some stage, Catia, private singing lessons will be necessary to advance your voice.
Thank you for responding. Would you be willing to give lessons, via the internet? Obviously, I can't come into your studio. I've been to Sydney, Australia. I have SLE,(LUPUS). Getting out to a vocal lesson isn't easy. I cannot drive, anymore.
