- Welcome to episode 1 of the brand new build series. This is going to be a realistic DCC BNSF modeled layout. In this first episode I go over all the exact items and materials I'm using. I go step by step to make sure no one misses out on any details. I also want to mention a couple of details I didn't say in the video. One is, I cut the foam with a large straight edge and a kitchen knife. Second, All track is code 100 regular Atlas brand track. If you have any questions, be sure the comment them. I reply to all of them!

For those First time Model Railroaders I Salute you Welcome to the Best Hobby in the world. And those who are Returning the Hobby Welcome Back.
I'm barely getting back into model railroading. I had a set when I was a kid and I want to recreate it. Your videos are excellent! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. 😎🐱🚂
I appreciate it 😁👍🏼
I built a 4x8 using those new Atlas Mark V turnouts ... I myself didn't like them. I took down my 4x8 and I'm starting an L shape point to point using Walthers DCC ready turnouts, they snap or click open and shut so you dont need switch machines to keep them in place 😁👍
Very well done, great narration to
You should get a HO switcher train (preferably burlington northern lol) and put it in the yard, theres nothing more cool then seeing an HO yard with a cute little switcher in it. I'm really looking forward to the new series. Good luck!
I agree I need to get a little switcher soon
Lagit one of two of the model train channels that upload consistently. Thanks my guy great stuff.😄
excellent video loved the idea of those shelves to support your baseboard !
Nice to see a more advanced track plan. Pro tip: eliminate the reverse curve “s curve” on the spur at the front. Add a straight section between the curves. Looks better and eliminates problems with derailments. Keep it up!
I’ll keep that in mind thank you!
Wow..awesome..thanks for sharing and keep up the great work..Lance
Wow I like the possibility of expanding to make a larger layout, my dad and I are planning something similar with the narrow table sections connecting in a square-ish shape. This also really helps with the track prep and planning!
That sounds awesome!
You are doing a great job on the new layout. At 8:25 you placed a curved piece to a curved piece with the opposite curve, this is called an S curve which may cause derailments. They recommend having a short straight piece between them like you did earlier in the video. Looking forward to watching your progress.
Ive recently gotten into the hobby and love this series so far! I cant wait to see the other episodes and hope this will help me start a larger layout.
I like how you take us through your steps. However your first mistake is getting those Atlas Snap turnouts. The plastic frog is known to cause problems later as it wears down. Also, the frog angle is sharper than #4 at about 3.5. The Mark 4-5 are better with metal frogs. The other is the short S-curve. Rolling stock hates this. You're track plan works okay with pre-2000 rolling stock. The newer cars need better track alignments. Hope this helps.
I like what you're doing with this layout that looks to include a lot of switching and yard sidings. Thanks for sharing your videos and I'm viewing them from the 1st state of Delaware. This is going to be a great layout when you're done even though you're just getting started.
Thank you! And hello from Colorado 😁
bro..... only one episode so far??? I wanted to binge the whole thing. Lol. Love your videos, your last build was fun to watch and informative. Looking forward to more.
Thanks man 😂 I appreciate it!
Lol you know I was really getting into your other setup on ep 11 and then you completely changed lol but I'm still excited to see where this setup goes. The last one was turning out amazing.
HO scale modular layout.
Flex tracks and switchs.
Atlas code 100.
Good luck with you hobby.
Where is you 🐱 ?
My dog bited the tail, Scooby Doo.
Scooby Dum barked to you 🐱 Binx.
😼 with my dog, Scooby Doo.
🐱😼.
It's coming together really nice & I like the yard layout.
Try pre-weathering your track, I spray mine outdoors with rattle can Rust-oleum Camoflage/ Earth Brown.
Rails & ties then nail your track down and come back later with pigments and acrylic paints to finish the
weathering and ballasting comes last. Oh also before you spray the track run a bead of chap stick along the rail tops, makes it so much easier to wipe the paint off the rail heads.
Thank you! I plan to get a air brush to spray them but I may just go with your method. I appreciate the tips 👍🏼👍🏼
Your video was shared to my discord server. I am looking forward to following along on the build series.
That means a lot thank you!
YOU MIGHT TRY BRUSHING YOUR GLUE DOWN BEFORE ADDING GRASS FORM STATIC MACHINE..IM ENJOY YOUR WORK GREAT JOB
noce a shunting layout :) .. these layouts make a lot of fun :) …put a small magnet on a chopstick for decupling :) oh and a run around would be a life saver :)
That’s a good idea!
Awesome cant wait im so thankful you are doing these types of videos and showing the products you have purchased and showing us on what the product is and how to use it thank you merry Christmas
Thanks! And merry Christmas too you!🎄
Can't wait for the next video
I'm excited to see the next episodes! It already looks really cool.
If you could, I'd really like to see an episode in the future with railroad crossings and traffic light details since they add a lively touch to layouts.
Thanks! I do plan to do railroad lights and street lights as well sometime soon
hey dude don't get rid of the ties you can put the extra ties where you cut off put them under the track to even out the ties
What a great presentation. I've been looking for someone to follow for a complete build and it seems I've found him. I'm going to enjoy this. Thank you.(obvuously I've subscribed)
Hey there, nice clarity, and evenly, and accurately colored lighting in your video!
Question...? Did you encounter any issues using caulking that, from what I could see, was NOT the 'foam safe' type?
About your one 'odd, longer turnout, if it isn't tacked down yet, you can probably look at the bottom of the ties, and it may clearly tell the source of that t/o...(based on appearance, it could be a Peco ElectroFrog, or if it's new, a Peco UniFrog...either is a fine choice, just seek out Peco's guidance for no hassle wiring.
Also recommend you see The DCC Guy (Larry Puckett) on U-Tube, as he has specific videos on the Peco (and other brands) turnouts...very helpful. Good Luck!!
Great video! This would be the perfect HO scale layout to model as a shortline railroad with connections to a Class 1 railroad.
Thank you :)
I’ll be following, thanks
Hello, our railroads interchange with each other for I model the Union Pacific's Boulder Branch in the 1970's out of Denver. My Dad worked the line as a trainman all the way to Valmont, Boulder and the Boulder power plant. For your roadbed to save on ballast tear the Midwest cork in half so the beveled edges are on the outside then lite sand the edges it will make easier to add glue then ballast. I like your layout plan for around the room, for my wiring DCC or conventional wiring I drop feeders from the track to the main Bus line about every 3 ft. since I dont solder the rail joints.
You should check out George Booth's HO Colorado and Southern/ Great Western Railway web page has a lot of good tips for Atlas turnouts and other things as well. Keep up the video's looking real good.
That’s a awesome line to model especially since ours would connect in real life! Thanks for the tips and tricks!
HO scale modular layout.
Good luck in You hobby.
My N scale layout.
DC locomotives.
Freight cars and passengers.
These Videos Rock.
Good luck with your new layout.
If you take your hobby knife and just cut off the little knob on Railroad tie that holds the rail on you side the rail jointer In between the two pieces
You will also want to get a rail cutter it will be much faster than the Dremel tool
Cool Ho layout.
Great video! looking forward on the progression.
For cut the track , used Atlas saw.
Looking good so far! I think you should do a expansion in the near future. 👍🏼
Thank you! I will defiently be doin so probably sooner then I think haha
What’s up mike!
Video Well Done Keep on Working it Slowly.
Thank you! 😁
Great video mate. This is already looking really good so far. When all the base boards are in will it be a giant square or will it be a U shape base board configuration when finished? - Nicholas.
Thanks man! But I’m not sure I would like to do a full large loop but I guess I’ll have to see
I live in your area of colorado maybe ill see you at the home depot soon and talk trains
What's gonna happen to the old layout you were building? This one will be good too. Keep them coming
I chopped part of it off and it will be used as a diorama 😁
Hi, I am very interested in your show, so I am planning to build up a staging area in my layout HO Scale size 8X4 feet by using the DCC System to run my train . Thank you and have nice happy new year 2022.
I like the simple deck with just shelving. Any info on the shelves used underneath the plywood? Did you have any issues leveling the plywood with the shelves underneath? If so, how did you resolve it? I'm debating whether or not to build a table underneath or do something similar with the shelves. I figure I will want some portability to it in case I re-position it within a large room
Yeah I get them at Home Depot there the HDX 4 tier plastic shelves. I just took off the top tier of it. I haven’t had any issues so far they work quite well. They are more pricey now since I last bought them. I believe there about $35 dollars
Sheesh! Doing great so far :)
I’m looking to build a similar switch layout on 8x2 table. I’m new to the hobby and am having difficulty with layout ideas for proto-typical switching. Do you have any advice or ideas that you would pass along?
I would try to look up HO scale shelf layout plans online and see what you like. I also like to watch videos where someone follows a train and films what industries it goes too, like @DelayInBlockProductions on RUclips has long videos chasing trains
Good video
Great plan. Could I please get a copy of this layout and a tracks part list?
Thank you! And sadly I don’t have that anymore since this is a old layout from awhile back
Okay, thanks for your reply. @@TopRailroad
I noticed on one of your videos , you used atlas switches . Have you had any issues with these ? I have not got my layout started but bought a lot of atlas switches ( new in box ) cheap bur I hear a lot of modelers say atlas switches are troublesome. What experience have you had with them ?
When I had this layout I didn’t have any issues at all with the Atlas Switches but I have heard about others saying otherwise. I think they’re fine just be careful with them when ballasting or stuff like that
@@TopRailroad Will do, thanks for the reply
You have the very nice beginnings of a freight yard……. But please you are missing a very important element to your design . You need a yard lead track , which comes off the main line I want to give you great advice 😊 . Please watch DJ’s trains 🚂 , he has videos on yard design elements And he Works for CSX
Thanks for the reminder! I’ll defiently have to implement it to the layout or atleast mention it to others who are watching. I have been watching his great videos on real train yards and layouts, great for learning!
Thank you for using my advice….. I hope 🤞 you do
nice! I just got a few rollingstock cars and I just won a bid on eBay for a ES44AC so now I have 2 locos. I love your vids and the really inspire me to make a full layout also, what brand flex track do you use? and do is it code 100 or 83? -Elijah
That’s cool, I love being the winning the bid on something I want. The flex track is code 100 atlas track 😁
@@TopRailroad yes! ok thanks!
That dollar store black paint is magical. Lol Are you using layout software to design your track?
It really is! But no I just saved photos and watched RUclips videos for all my planning. Someday I might try one out
@@TopRailroad AnyRail is pretty good for planning a layout if you can get past the learning curve.
I wish i could make a layout but i don't have the money AT ALL
No track bedding?
Not for this section of the layout. I do this because most train yards are level with the ground so workers can walk around easier then if they were raised.
Gotta Remember you are the Only crittic that Matters other people don’t like it Ah well.
graffiti decals
I’ll have to buy some soon
