We seriously need more teachers like you. I have had multiple anatomy teachers over the years. Every single one of them have fit a description. I feel, they have all used big complicated nomenclature and terms JUST to confuse us. This semester, I am writing down all of the confusing phrases and I plan to submit it with my exit survey, to show how awful the class was. Thank goodness for online classes and transcription programs, I am able to capture the actual word order. It is maddening. You Sir, have made learning about this topic EXTREMELY interesting and understandable. I love your teaching style; the repetitive use of the terms, the conversational way you explain the structures and nomenclature. I look forward to all of your videos to help me through these classes. Thank you for creating.

Just to clarify on outer hair cells. Just like inner hair cells, outer hair cells also have K+ channels and tip links. When the endolymph moves, both hair cells types move and both cell types have a surge of K+ into the cell (depolarization). HOWEVER, the difference that in outer hair cells the depolarization changes the membrane potential and that causes prestin to relax and elongate the cell. This is STEP 1 of the process. The second step would be the release of ACh from the olivocochlear bundle, which like Ninja Nerd said hyperpolarizes the cell by letting K+ exit the cell. This causes prestin to contract so that the outer hair cell returns to its original shape to be ready for the next cycle. This video was PHENOMENAL as all other videos, but I just wanted to add a side note for those who want to know the chronological order of the outer hair cell function.

Great video! Thank you for making all of this content available. Quick note though, at 14:38 you said normal human conversation is about 1500-4000Hz. That’s true when talking on the phone, since only the higher frequencies of the harmonic series of our voices get transmitted (300-3,400Hz), but the average adult human vocal range is actually around 85-300Hz (that’s including the ranges of both males and females) which is what we hear when in a live conversation.
