I've had a lot of success catching big chub with a dry dropper method - usual set up is a big stimulator style dry fly with a size 12 - 16 bead head pheasant tail/hare's ear under it. Seems to trick the more reluctant fish into biting - often they'll swerve the dry fly and munch the nymph
I'm glad I heard you say "You're not supposed to fight, you're a chub" I've never found them to be good fighters but a book I read a few years back said they fight well. I put that book down there and then.
It all depends on the season, and of course, the tackle. In summer, after spawning, they don't fight so well and I try to leave them alone until September. Chub fight much better in late autumn and winter. I fish for them on the leger (6lb line) or float (4lb line) and in the strong current of a spate river, with trees and other snags, they usually fight well. So much so, that I have sometimes presumed that I had hooked a barbel. It also depends on the individual fish, as I find that the shape, colour and condition of chub is very variable, even in the same stretch of river.
Great video! Really been looking forward to this one! First fish I caught in the UK was a Chubb on fly and I've had a soft spot for them ever since . As always full of action, keen observations , tips and very entertaining! 485 fork length is my guess. Looking forward to the next video now!
Well done Andy it must be exciting to get a chub on the fly. They are tough fighters, I only ever caught one big one 5lb on a plug while targeting pike. I live in ireland now so I miss the species as we have none here.
Nice one, and as suspected better fortune for you this time Andy. I’m going to have to give this a go, as I love dry fly with beetles for trout, never tried Chubb. 432mm I reckon.
Nice andy i tie all my own beetles there so easy to make i have had lots of chubb on them but i also make lots of carp dry flies the dog biscuit one's i make have caught many many carp this season nice video andy enjoyed it ALIEN
Hiya Andy I'm a Derbyshire Angler and I love Predatory Fishing. However, me and my little brother can never seem to catch anything and the 2 times we have caught fish seemed to be a fluke. Have you got any tips to help us improve if not still thank you and i love your videos keep it up man.
Holy shit dude those are some amazing chub I starting to get an interesse in these fish since i heard a small stream nearby my home houses 50cm+ chub And i did some pond flyfishing for carp before and some pike flyfishing But i have a 4 wt that would be perfect for it I have seen some smaller ones a group of 6 and i notices their really spooky Can you maybe do a video about chub itself where to find them behaviour and so one ? As a thank you im subscribing as i post this😅 🤘🙅😀
Nice fish guys. Those chub look a lot like a species of fish we get in South Africa, called yellow fish.
Fantastic again and great to see coarse fish being targeted on fly and the rivers looked ideal for it.please keep them coming

Interesting, I might have a dabble at that, thanks!

Yeah they're no fighter usually, though you get the odd one which goes nuts!

Catch a decent size chub and you'll have a scrap on your hands.
Appreciate this is years old now in RUclips timelines but what snapped the #4 too big a fish for the rod or ?? just intrigued. Thx

Great video chaps, might give the Chub a bash next weekend myself.
Superb Article from Robbie in the Anglers Mail too 👌👍
Excellent, entertaining video. Good to see the chub returning to the Wensum after the catastrophic otter predation.
That aint the wensum
Ah right, which river is it then? Not too many to choose from.
@@maddogbeckett1880 Suffolk river
Please can you clarify which river this is?
First 6 mins is the wensum I'd say but the rest of the video is 1million% a Suffolk river of which I can not name.. Less pressure the better

You'll have to get back over here!
